CM7.1 speakerphone echo? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
maybe someone can help, i have been using the cyanogenmod 7.1 for the last couple of days and my only bug so far is that whenever im on a call, where im using the speakerphone, the other person complains of hearing themselves, like echoing. I am running cm7.1 with glitch v12 beta, and ed05 radio. Anyone experiencing the same and have a fix? or anyone else running cm7.1 without the issue (please post kernal and radio used)?
i really like the rom and would have to hate to downgrade but i really need the speakerphone. Thanks in advance for any help guys!

Can anyone help or offer a suggestion?

Nope. Known issue.
good day.

So nothing can be done? Can you give your opinion on a good stable Rom....

If you're hung up on speaker phone go stock. But Pool Party suits all my needs and wants out of a rom.
good day.

Does pool party have the same speakerphone issue?

Did u try to modify dsp settings on speaker?

Yup i tried everything, seems it's a known issue and can't be fixed until source code is released....

Ya. All Mtd roms have the issue...I brought it up to ssewx in the glitch kernel and he took the job.. He is currently working on Bluetooth echo, speakerphone echo, and 3.5 jack echo.. I believe he has made progress on Bluetooth echo so far.. Don't flock to him with questions off era's as it takes from his coding time, and you will be reminded of the first rule of cm.. NO CTA'S.. But if you like. Go thank the man

My girlfriend is addicted to speakerphone (annoying to me) but she also doesn't like the touchwiz interface. Big thumbs up to the devs putting time into fixing this issue, it'll make my life much easier once it's fixed.

So, so far there is no fix for this? Because I just went from Mik Shifted G to CM7 and it is SOOOO much better, but I have to take calls a lot and I literally can't hear the other person at all, so i had to go back to mik. Until theres a fix looks like I'm stuck.

I'm having the same problem on my AT&T Galaxy S3. Person on other end of line experienced terrible echo when I turn speakerphone on. I don't have the issue on my stock ICS ROM only on the custom JB ROM's I have tried: CM 10 M2, AOKP M1, AOCP newest build etc... I'm assuming all these ROM's share some common code. It's definitely the the case as I have tried taking it off and on with no effect. If you have found a solution., I'm all ears. Thanks!

Actually, a solution has been posted over and over and over again, more than a few times by myself. But, I also know that the forum search tool here doesn't work very well - I personally can't stand using it. Therefore, rather than grumble (much) about having to repeat myself again, here it is.
The speakerphone echo is caused by a combination of too high of a boost in the speakerphone call audio plus too high of a microphone gain in speakerphone mode. Both of these can be adjusted in a few places, but my preferred method is to use the Home Screen -> hit the menu button -> "System Settings" -> "Device Options" -> "In-Call Volume Controls" path.
Once you've got that open, adjust your "Speakerphone Volume" setting down to 1. Some people prefer 0. 2 will almost certainly cause echo. 3 will give you echo with severe distortion and probably melt your eardrums while causing a significant space-time anomaly in your fridge which will immediately consume all your beer, sending it back to 1955. You've been warned.
Next, adjust your speakerphone mic gain down some. I've found that 14 is a good value. Some may prefer slightly more or less. I've found that anything above 19 usually results in an echo. You'll just have to play with this one. If you have it above, say, 25, then you will almost certainly get some echo along with over-modulation, and the kernel will freak out and send an email to your parents and grandparents with your entire collection of nasty sheep porn attached. You've been warned.
Finally, make sure you hit OK, or all these settings will not be applied. They *should* stick after a reboot. Mine do.
I've made a blog post about this so that maybe a Google search will turn up some usable results for you all. Here it is: http://blog.efpophis.net/2012/11/speakerphone-echo-on-samsung-fascinate.html

Awesome. Thanks for the helpful information and link. The image in the blog post was helpful so that I knew exactly what settings screen I was looking for. For me, I needed to go to "Settings > [Device] Advanced > [Volume Controls] In-Call Volume Controls". Those settings seem to have done the trick for me.
Thanks again!

Caller's voice echoes back to them?

Several people have complained of hearing their own voice echoing back to them when on a call with me.
I tried *228 option 1 and 2, different ROMs, and turning the in-call volume down. But no luck.
I heard something about echo cancellation and hearing-aids, but haven't been able to find any fixes.
Anyone have a fix for this, or suggestion?
Ive noticed it happen a few times. A reset usually fixes it.

By that do you mean power-down and re-boot? I do that pretty regularly (at least every other day) and still have the problem.
Thanks though!

Suggestions that I have heard - update the radio, although I will not doing that on mine.
I have not seen any fixes that you have not already mentioned.
As a hearing aid user, I have been trying to follow this and see where the cause is. Mind if I ask,
What ROMs have you used specifically?
What are your software settings?
So far in all the reading, it is across the board so to speak. Have not seen any real fixes as of yet.
feel free to PM to discuss further.

I have used: Official21, Vanilla, Legend Build(EE), Eris Lightning, EvilEris2.01, Aloysius2.0, and Ivans0.8T2. I am now using Sense-able as it is the least buggy for me so far with OC. The only ones I can say for sure that have had the echo for me have been the last 4 including Sense-able.
Not sure what settings you're looking for, but here goes the ones I think may be related:
TTY off
Hearing Aids off
Voice Privacy off
In-Call Volume at about 75%

[Q] CM7 Sound?

Hey guys I'm using CM7 7/17 update and I'd like to know if there's any work arounds or fixes for low in-call volume? Or for that matter if anyone else is having an issue with low incall volume?

What end of the volume are you referring to? People that cannot hear you or you cannot hear them.
I know that in the Voodoo Sound setting if you have the "Hi-Fi record" setting ticked people will have a hard time hearing you.
Best of luck.
I'm having trouble hearing people, as far as I know they can hear me easily

Fair enough. I do believe this is a known issue in the kernel of CM7 (or moreover any AOSP ROM for our phone) right now.
I personally do not have a problem hearing people but that just may be due to my hearing I don't know.
I do know that Glitch is beta testing the next version of his kernel with a "volume stuff".

While I didn't see it specifically stated that it is the sound problem you are referring to many in the thread have hope that this is in fact what he is referring to.
You can try to PM him and tell him why you would be a good candidate for beta testing if you want to give it a shot.
I can confirm that I also have low volume. I think I read somewhere that it was a flaw with the kernel source that is currently available for our devices.

[Q] Issues with In-Call Mic

Is anyone else having issues with the other party hearing you in call? I have a case, and no matter if I have it on or off, the other party can't hear me unless I talk louder than normal. I don't recall having to talk that loud on my iPhone to be heard. Was happening on CM7 and latest UnNamedROM.
I've encountered the same issue. I've been running unnamed since the day I got my phone, and am ocrrently on 2.2.1. I've read of others having this issue as well. I've also read somewhere that disabling the noise canceling feature supposedly helps. I've done so, but not sure if or how much it helps, as I can't hear myself from the other end. Perhaps someone else can chime in with advice regarding this topic.
So I was doing some more tests. It seems I might be holding the phone away from my face when I speak in an effort to not get face grease on the screen. Will have to do more testing to verify.

I too have this issue whenever I use the UCKK6 modem after the OTA update. Whenever I was on the UCKH7 firmware + modem, I had no problems and when I use the UCKK6 firmware + UCKH7 modem, I also don't have problems.
When using the UCKK6 modem though, I get a LOT of people complaining that they can't hear me and will sometimes even hang up on me because they think my call dropped (I'm still there though and can hear them perfectly).
It sounds like your mouth is being muffled or like you are underwater- or like you are randomly teleporting yourself across the room, while leaving your phone in one place.
I have done several tests myself by calling my house phone with my cell and putting the house phone on mute (to prevent echo). I then hold both phones to each ear and basically talk to myself. One test even involves me saying the alphabet. I have done these tests several times using both modems.
My tests gave me the conclusion that the K6 modem is buggy, but is especially unusable with the noise suppression turned on. When on, certain syllables seem to get cancelled out by the noise suppression, as though it thinks that part of it is background noise. However, even with the noise suppression off, I still get the occassional fading of my voice, but it is extremely occassional compared to when the noise suppression feature is on, where it is almost every couple words or so.
With the H7 modem, I notice no problems whatsoever, whether the noise suppression is on or off.
So, I recommend doing one of the following if you are experiencing these issues:
1) Revert completely back to UCKH7 firmware and modem if you want/need the noise suppression.
2) Use the UCKK6 firmware with the UCKH7 modem if you want/need the noise suppression.
3) Continue using UCKK6 firmware and modem, but turn the noise suppression off.
1 and 2 are sure fire ways to not have any issues at all. 3 may still give you problems, but it may happen once every few minutes with noise suppression off (still there, but not nearly as noticeable), while once every couple syllables with the feature on (very freaking noticeable!).

So I started having this issue a couple days ago.
I've tried going back to the KH7 modem and still not working. I even tried restoring to stock.
Mic works fine in speakerphone mode, but I get absolutely no sound otherwise (I can shout into the phone and the other side hears nothing). Noise suppression toggle doesn't do anything.
Thoughts?
I guess I'll try taking the phone into ATT this weekend.
^
That sounds like hardware issues, so yeah, bring it back to ATT.

Try this. Open up your phone and...

Click on [2] AUDIENCE DISABLE
then try out a test call and see if it works

The above code does not work on AT&T version, I guess. At least it did not work for me. Don't know if root makes any difference, yes I can have booster apps. But again people have reported that this does not seem to work.
I happen to read in International s2 forum that opening the phone and making a bigger hole for mic helps. Or even cutting a slice of the white protective casing around the lower micophone seems to help as well. I did not want to tamper with hardware at the moment, as I am just 10 days past my warranty period.
Let me know if someone knows some funky codes to get this fixed. I am running 2.3.4 stock ROM and not rooted yet.
- Thanks

I'm on AT&T and the code worked for me, however I'm still having the issue. I don't necessarily think messing with the hardware by cutting or slicing will fix it because (for me at least) the problem is intermittent. Sometimes I'll go afew days without the problem, then I can have 3 calls back to back where the person doesn't hear me at all. It can happen both when I initiate the call or answer and it doesn't always happen in the same point of the call. This is pretty frustrating, I really hope there's a fix because I don't want to have to convert to stock and deal with AT&T.
I had this issue. Mine was not intermittent, the mic just stopped working. No amount of flashing or resets from ATT could make it work again.
Strangely enough the speakerphone worked fine and that just screams software issue, but AT&T chose to replace my hardware.
The problem seems to be intermittent for me too.... I don't know how the code works for Griffon23, as AT&T has disabled that on our model. I have not updated to 2.3.6 as the firmware ushers in loads of problems.
I really hope there is a fix, I am just being lazy to flash new roms and stuff, as I might have to return this piece of S#$#t due the low volume and poor mic. Such a shame that expensive phone like this has issues with basic functionality, voice calls.
I also tried good in ear headphones, that solves the problem of low in call volume but not microphone, which simply points that there is some internal problem. May be hardware or may br firmware. And May be ICS update can fix this for us. Fingers crossed.
Thank you Samsung!

THIS. I was having a similar problem a while back. People were telling me that my voice was cutting in and out a lot. Not even looking for it, I found this thread and flashed the UCKH7 modem. I also read somewhere that it helps battery life too as that's what I was searching for.
Anyway, It's now been several weeks now and I had forgotten about the problem until I saw this thread again. I guess I'd have to say that the UCKH7 modem definitely solved my problems as I can't remember the last time someone complained about my voice cutting in and out.
Since this is the only thread similarly related to my issue, I'll continue this one instead of starting a new one. So I've tried the above listed suggestions and the dial code for the audio does not work for me, as a matter of fact, none of the dial codes work for my phone, I get a "Invalid MMI code or no connection" error. I Have not been able to make a call on speakerphone since I flashed my phone for the first time back when I first got it. I've switched around from different ROMs and I get the same issue. The main issue is that no one can hear me when I'm on speakerphone, but I can hear them. I can make regular calls just fine. I've even flashed back to stock and the issue still persists. Are there any suggestions? I am currently on the latest AOKP build of ICS.
If you've been flashing different ICS roms, there's a chance you flashed one of the mic-swapped kernels. Try the AOSP/AOKP version of NEAK. Make sure to wipe cache and dalvik before flashing.
EDIT: Didn't read your post closely enough, if regular calls work, the kernel shouldn't be the problem. Maybe the modem? UCKH7 is what most people report with good results, depending on area.
Have you ever been able to use the speakerphone? Do you know for certain that it works?

I just came across this thread after a long time. I was surprised to see how much it has grown!p and how many people haod similar issues as me!
Well, I kind of wanted to give an update and suggestion for those who still have issues.
First my update. Since having these issues in UCKK6 and ICS leaks, I actually gave up on ATT's firmware and moved on to custom ROMs. Currently- and loving it- I'm on a ROM called Mystic's Pride (will be going to Mystic's Glory, a more advanced version- once it is out of Beta testing). Mystic's ROMs are ported firmwares from the international SGS2, but they use the latest ATT modems since the international version's will not work on our phones.
Using a custom ROM will NOT fix the call quality issue. That is all linked to the modem.
Now the suggestions. While running UCKK6, I discovered that you could use the UCKH7 modem with it. So for a while (until I noticed excess battery drain issues), i was using the UCKK6 firmware with the UCKH7 modem.
NO MATTER WHAT VERSION FIRMWARE YOU ARE USING (Gingerbread OR ICS), YOU CAN USE THE UCKH7 MODEM!
As I stated in my update, I am running a custom ROM now, which is Android 4.0.4. Im still using the UCKH7 modem and my calls are super clear and I am not having any issues with people hearing me.
You may be asking, "If you are now on ICS, then why not just use the latest ATT ICS modem?" The answer is simply that after all of my experiences with horrible call quality using official ATT modems, I simply do not trust them anymore. I know of one modem that works, so I have stuck with it without issues. I plan to test out the newest ICS modem though... just to see how it compares with UCKH7. If no good, then its back to KH7.
So, if you are still having issues, then try flashing the UCKH7 modem to your phone. You do not need to be rooted in order to do this. All you need is Odin and to boot into Download mode.
If you flashed the KH7 modem and still having issues, then you most likely have a hardware problem.
Another thing I noticed while still using UCKK6 with its corresponding modem is that by turning off the Noise Suppression, you can get better quality calls. However, using UCKH7 modem may make your calls clearer, but will allow you to use Noise Suppression.
I hope this helps somewhat. I have NOT sent my phones in for repairs/replacement for this issue and my calls are just as clear as the day I bought my phone.
Ill try to pop in here to answer questions, etc if needed.

It's been common knowledge for a long time that you can flash any ATT I777 modem with any firmware, using ClockworkMod Recovery. It is useful (to me at least, didn't know this before) to know you can also use Odin to flash modems if you don't have CWM, but most I777 users around here have it because they use custom kernels and ROMs. There's a whole thread which contains every single modem in CWM-flashable zips, and it also contains a Google map with notes about which modems users have reported working best for them in their respective locations; this might be helpful to you if you didn't know about it beforehand.
tl;dr - try all the different modems to see which one gives you the best speeds and call quality in your area, they are interchangeable. Use this thread to help you out.
This is one problem I've had when completely stock, ics, and jb. And it mostly occurs when I have ear phones plugged in

[Q] Headset Microphone cutting in and out on Task's AOKP 5.1.12/Siyah v3.2rc1

I've searched for this problem, found some stuff that is close but I haven't been able to find it exactly.
Speakerphone and built-in microphone work fine.
But when I use my headset (Bose MIE2), the microphone fades in and out when I am on a call. People say it will sound fine and then start to sound "tinny" or like I'm "in a can". Seems like this happens when I stop talking and they speak and the background noise becomes louder to the caller. And it doesn't last. It fades in and out, several times on a call.
This headset worked fine on stock AT&T Gingerbread.
About two months ago, I decided to root my phone for the first time and install a modded ROM. So I flashed CM7. Headphone mic worked fine on CM7.
Bose microphone was also working fine on CM9 - one of the early release candidates.
At that point, flashing became easy so I started on the nightlies (I'm sounding like an addict, aren't I? I feel like one!!!).
Then I found my dream flasher/pusher, Task! I've been on AOKP ROM (currently up to date on the 5.1.2012 release) ever since. Awesome ROM, if you haven't tried it.
Still having the headphone mic issue though.
I've wiped fully several times (yes, I read every post in your thread, Task), trying to clear this up.
I also wondered if the headphones where jacked so I returned them to Bose and the new pair is presenting the same issue.
I have read all about the built-in mic swapping issues with the different kernels.
I've tried NEAK and Siyah and I'm careful to be sure I have the mic swapping versions for AOKP/CM. My phone does not like NEAK at all. Loves Siyah - getting fantastic battery life (14 hours today, 27% screen time and WiFi on all day with 20% battery remaining) and responsive. I'm currently on the latest Siyah ICS [v3.2rc1] with UC 200 to 1000, lulz/vr only. It is also awesome, thanks, Ktoonsez!
I'm wondering if that mic swapping on the phone has anything to do with the mic on the headset.
Also, is there anything else I can check to help troubleshoot this in more detail?
Finally, are there any controls for headphone mics or even microphone settings in ROM Control or anywhere else that can be adjusted?
Thanks for your help in advance!
The NEAK kernel only has one choice for Tasks rom, no need to pick between mic swap.

There's your problem. You have to use the AOSP version bro.

I'm wishing it was that simple. On NEAK, I've tried the AOSP - still have the issue. My phone freezes too often on that kernel.
On Siyah, I get the mic swap version for AOKP/CM - still having the issue.
The latest Siyah runs like a beast and gets fantastic battery, just has the fading issue.

No sound from earpiece/Call bug info

Hi all
Please bare with me as I'm not the best when it comes to typing out what im thinking or trying to say
This info is mainly for our awesome devs but also for everyone else. Shout outs to @Unjustified Dev @DrakenFX @tdm and anyone else who can fix this
I was just wanting to help get this fixed as this one bug is keeping a lot of users including myself from moving away from stock and enjoying all the other roms available. I believe the bug has to do with the the work our beloved anonymous dev who helped correct the speaker issues a few months ago. Specifically this---> https://review.lineageos.org/#/c/168154/.
I'm pretty confidant it has nothing to do with any of the different modems people are flashing. I have tested this with all of the different modem versions for my G variant and none have made a difference
Also, there are other users that are getting this bug confused with another potential bug that has to do with distorted sound coming out when activating speakerphone while in call or something like that. I have not experienced that bug so I dont know the specifics. People are just using the term "Speakerphone bug" as both of these bugs involve the speakerphone
Now I can create the bug at will and have attached logcats below in the different scenarios. Hopefully the info is there for those who know how to fix
The steps I do to recreate the bug are as follows
1 - unlock phone and using the volume buttons, make sure the ringtone is NOT set to vibrate/silent and Do Not Disturb is NOT activated.
2 - Make a call. Call comes through earpiece as expected, no issues. Person on the other side can hear perfectly. Repeat as many times as you want, sound always comes through earpiece
3 - using volume buttons, reduce ringtone volume to vibrate/silent or turn on Do Not Disturb
4 - Make a call. Call comes through earpiece as expected, Hang up
5 - With the ringtone still set to silent/vibrate, turn the screen off using the power button and let it sit for about 5 - 10 seconds
6 - Unlock the phone and try to make a call. Call will connect but no sound will come from earpiece. Person on the other side can hear everything as per normal but we cant hear them
7 - While in call, toggle the speakerphone or if you have dial pad sounds enabled in the sound menu, press a number on the dial pad, sound now comes through earpiece as expected
From my testing and the procedure above, you can see that the bug happens when the phones ringer is put in silent/vibrate or when do not disturb is activated and the phone is locked/unlocked.
logcat 1 is with everything working normally, ringtone set to sound and call coming through earpiece as expected
logcat 2 is with ringtone set to silent and making a call. No sound comes from earpiece
logcat 3 is the same as 2 but during the call toggling speakerphone to fix
Now I dont know what is going on in the logs but I do see a lot of errors from "TFA9890"
This was all done on a fresh install of the universal bootloader, twrp 3.1.1.0, A2017G N Modem, latest LOS and Open Gapps mini and logcats were captured with MatLog on my G variant
Oh see this is Incredibly interesting, because tfa4990 is the route being used.... This is potentially incredibly helpful!!!!
I'm going to analyze these I've the weekend and see if I can figure something out. Thank you for the logs
Interesting timing on this post. I've been working on the axon7mini the past 10 days or so, and it also uses the tfa9890 amp. So I've started to familiarize myself with how all this stuff works. (I have pretty much zero experience with android audio in the past).
Fantastic post, well done. I have only encountered the problem a couple of times but upon reading what you wrote a little light bulb went off, that is exactly the situation that it occurs for me as well. It's this sort of interaction and support between the users and devs at xda have that makes it all so worthwhile. Thanks again.
As someone who's dealt with this bug for a long, long time... I have to commend you on a fantastic post. Thanks, and I hope this leads to a solution!
I hope this is looked into in the process of porting LOS 15. Would be cool to see this issue disappear.
Would this bug also happen on the U variant? I tried to recreate it using the steps above and it worked fine.

I think I have read somewhere that it is not affecting U which might be the reason this has not yet been fixed but I cannot remember where I read this.
We would need the logs from an U variant to check if it looks the same.

It does affect the U variant. I have one and it happened a few times that when I would call someone I had no ringing tone coming from the earpiece unless I toggled the speakerphone on/off.
same problem here in a2017g aosp extended...
So I take it we can give up trying to solve this? Seems to exist in all non stock roms.
Wish someone would fix it. I don't even know where to begin, and with what I've read about the axon 9, i wont be switching phones for quite some time.

did you guys try the fix that @Miustone plasters all over XDA?
@Miustone Could you make a flashable zip with ONLY THAT ONE FIX for the Fluence stuff? Pretty please?

Fluence settings will not fix driver implementation. Miustone's claims are misleading. I have tested it to death
The only way to fix would be by a Dev with audio skills. Good luck finding one. I've tried
Stay on a stock roms or risk not hearing in calls in other roms

I fixed all Mic Bugs, Just the Echo is left which seams to came from /system/vendor/etc. Don't blame Me for the Bugs, i never touched the Sources of the Axon 7 and besides Kranoner has No Dev ever asked Me about it again. That My Patch is fixing Bugs means Just that there are Things Missing which are working and present on other Devices too...
I was coming from the LG G5 which has used almost the Same Fluence and Mic Configs as currently present in the Patch. Point.

Well, you have a chance to prove it! Make a flashable zip with ONLY the call bug fixes. If it actually fixes their problems then they'll believe you. otherwise they're right not to.
It's next to pointless using a custom rom if you want a good daily driver.
I bought this phone because I thought things like this could be solved this day and age but I won't be making that mistake next time!

Omg who is blaming you for bugs? Your claiming you fixed it but many others still have this issue
This thread is not about mic issues. Please re-read first post and for the hell of it, check out the logcats. They might help you actually fix it
Unless your digging into the audio/dac driver code, I'm doubtful it will ever be fixed
Why do yall think its the driver? I dont have any problems with audio, its how the Phone app is handling it. If i was to debug this I would check the source for the Phone app and trace it from there. It seems like something might not be using the driver correctly, but the driver seems to be working fine. I could be wrong but I'm not new to linux and android, just no experience with audio development.
Maybe try installing stock phone app on LOS or RR and see if it still has problems. That would either show where the problem is or eliminate Phone app from being source of problem.
