[Q] SGS2 can't change settings for wifi hotspot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have an issue with wifi hotspot configuration on my SGS2 running Darky XXKI3.
For some reason I can't change the setting for my hotspot.
No matter what I configure (another SSID, PSK or open) it always revert back to AndroidAP with a random generated password.
I know this is a not a ROM issue since I had this also with default stock ROM after flashing an update from CWM.
If I flash from odin everything works fine
Any suggestions hot to troubleshoot this?

I've been having the same problem after upgrading to XXKI8 running 2.3.5

hello, i had the same problem. had a look in logcat, it shows:
E/WifiService( 2677): Error writing hotspot configurationjava.io.FileNotFoundException: /data/misc/wifi/softap.conf (Permission denied)
so, to fix bring up a console (eg connectBot, or adb shell), and run:
busybox chown wifi:system /data/misc/wifi
chmod 770 /data/misc/wifi
and then it'll be working again.

Your script did the job!
I've had this bug since ki3, and i believe its common for ki* firmwares.
But now its OK. 10x

I tried your solution via adb shell, but I received:
chown: /data/misc/wifi: Operation not permitted
EDIT: I fixed this by simply giving write permissions to this wifi folder for group in Root Explorer.

Awesome. Fixed the problem a treat. Many thanks.

Hi, I've been having problem getting your script to work. I have root access on my Galaxy S2, got adb shell installed & started but after that I'm stumped. I tried to type:
busybox chown wifi:system /data/misc/wifi
but I'm given this as a reply:
chown: unknown user/group wifi:system
Am I missing something obvious? I am quite new on this...
Thank you!

The syntax of chown can sometimes vary slightly.
Try wifi.system instead of wifi:system
Note that your initramfs will clobber permissions on boot most likely - however once the file is created, it may be rewritable even after the initramfs hoses the parent directory's perms.

No. You need root to change ownership and permissions.

guess i ve to keep changing the ssid then thanks

You could also update to 2.3.6; I believe it is fixed in that version.
EDIT: at least, I think it is fixed in newer versions of 2.3.6. That said, this thread (starting with post 12) suggests some possible fixes. I've not tried them, as I offer my own fix in that same thread, but that fix requires root...

i'm back

somehow i had another (different) wifi issue, was googling, and came across this thread again. weird.
anyway, i was having the same problem as the user above - unknown user/group system:wifi
for my problem, wifi wouldn't turn on at all until i chmoded /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf to 666. everytime i rebooted, it would change back to 660, and not work. argh1!!
eventually i worked out the owner was wrong, but everytime i tried to change it
chown system:wifi /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
i would get the above error about unknown user/group
eventually i worked it out. if you go ls -al in the folder, you'll get something like this:
Code:
[email protected]:/data/misc/wifi # ls -al
ls -al
drwxrwx--- 3 1010 1010 4096 Apr 1 02:18 .
drwxrwx--t 11 1000 9998 4096 Apr 1 08:14 ..
-rw-rw---- 1 1000 1010 21 Apr 2 13:18 entropy.bin
drwxrwx--- 2 1010 1010 4096 Apr 2 13:18 sockets
-rw------- 1 1000 1000 24 Apr 1 01:46 softap.conf
-rw-rw---- 1 0 0 891 Apr 2 13:18 wpa_supplicant.conf
[email protected]:/data/misc/wifi #
do you see on the . and sockets folder the owner is 1010:1010 ? and on the wpa_supplicant.conf file the owner is 0:0 ?
well, that's the prob. i had copied in my own wpa_supplicant.conf file because titanium backup couldn't restore my wifi access points for some lame reason, and the owner was wrong. miror the . folder owner for this file:
chown 1010:1010 /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
and you don't need 666 perms on the file, 660 is enough!

Thanks a lot !

omniwolf,
Thanks for the trick, it solved my problem which arose just after I reset the phone.
Instead of using a console, I took a different way to change the permissions.
I used the file manager "ES File Explorer" with root access to chmod the directory from 750 to 770.
I didn't issue the chown command and although the file softap.conf has been created, I've noticed that the permissions have been reverted to 750.
And I can still change the configuration (SSID or key) since the file already exists with 600 permission.
How those two points can be explained ?
Thanks for your answer.

Same problem, I used to be able to run The Settlers and other games, now I can't..
I uninstalled drivers, set plugin to default, then uninstalled the app, but still it doesn't work
Having root access from recovery is a must to solve problems if you run into them (run "/system/lib/cf3d_uninstall.sh" as root to remove the driver and restore the old one)
1. boot into jb recovery mode
2. run "adb devices" - to make sure the phone drivers are ok (should output a long hex string and "device")
3. run "adb shell" from command prompt
4. in shell prompt "sh system/lib"
5. still in shell "sh /cf3d_uninstall.sh"
phone will reboot and you have working jb system
- it worked for me but no guarantee it'll work for you!
hope it helps.
if sh /cf3d_uninstall.sh doesnt work , try 'sh /system/lib/cf3d_uninstall.sh" instead.

Hi, i'm a boy from Finland. I have the same problem as "manju_xda" but i have the root permissions in my device..
The question is.. .. I'm stucked with chainfire 3d and my adb shell tells that "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" .. What to do?
And sorry for my bad english
For those who found this thread on Google, I found my solution in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362873

[ROOT] Mempodroid root - ICS 9.4.2.11+

** This is completely unsupported!!!!!!! **
ALL credit goes to saurik for the root method, Jason A. Donenfeld (zx2c4) for finding the exploit, alpharevx for finding the offsets and initial confirmation on the Transformer Prime and viperboy for finding it and posting it in his thread. I did not research, find, or develop this root method!
Mods, if I've done anything wrong, please feel free to remove this thread.
You will need to know how to use ADB commands, otherwise, use viperMOD PrimeTime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Downloads:
mempodroid binary
su binary
Root:
adb push mempodroid /data/local
adb push su /data/local
adb shell
chmod 777 /data/local/mempodroid
/data/local/mempodroid 0xd9ec 0xaf47 sh
** You should now be in a remote shell session with root (indicated by #)
mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
** IF you have previously rooted your Prime, run the following two commands. They may throw an error that the file a file was not found.
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/xbin/su
cat /data/local/su > /system/xbin/su
chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
rm /data/local/mempodroid
rm /data/local/su
exit
exit
adb reboot
After your Transformer Prime comes up, install Superuser from android market.
HOPEFULLY everyone has learned their lesson and will also install Voodoo Rootkeeper as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R
Enjoi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
** Feb 21 2012 Edit **
Works on 9.4.2.14
** Feb 09 2012 Edit **
Works on 9.4.2.13
** Jan 25 2012 Edit **
Changed the mount command - thanks viperboy!
Added steps to possibly resolve issues with previously rooted systems
Changed a few steps to be a little bit easier.
**Jan 24 2012 Edit **
Some people are reporting issues with this method. I suspect this is due to previously having root or other altered files. A method that has worked for some is to update to 9.4.2.11.1 and then following the above procedures. Please note, this firmware release is unofficial and at this time THERE IS NO DOWNGRADE PATH.
i keep getting permission denied after
adb shell /data/local/mempodroid 0xd9ec 0xaf47 mount -o remount,rw '' /system
i missed a chmod step, add it just now.
run:

and then pick up right where you left off.
as i am not root nor superuser .. i don't even get access

[SOLVED] "sh: applet not found" after BusyBox install

Background: On a rooted device, I installed busybox via the BusyBox Pro app, with the "symlinks" option checked. Afterwards, wifi stopped working, root stopped working, adb stopped working, and a lot of tasks started failing with "sh: applet not found".
The problem: BusyBox Pro 8.0 replaces /system/bin/ash with a symlink to busybox. This was problematic on my device, where /system/bin/sh was a symlink to ash, so now 'sh' is actually calling busybox, and this particular compilation of busybox didn't have 'sh' support compiled in, hence the "sh: applet not found" error everytime anything tried to call sh, which as it happens, is a lot! The bug was fixed quickly with a 8.1 release, but due to suspected caching policies on the Google Store, a lot of people still got the old release even after this was fixed!
Here's how I fixed this:
Prerequisite: You'll need a replacement sh binary. On another device, which was also an ARM device, sh was symlinked to 'mksh', and I just took this. You might want to verify that the binary works on your broken device before completing the final steps below.
Initial Wifi
It's only DHCP that is failing (on the "Obtaining IP address..." step), so go into your Wifi Settings, forget the network, add it again, and change DHCP to "static", manually fill in the appropriate IP info for your network, and you'll be good to go (encrypted network is fine).
Getting a Root terminal
Download KBOX from http://kevinboone.net/kbox.html
In KBox, menu -> more -> preferences, change shell -> "command line" to "/system/bin/ash"
su -s /system/bin/ash
Remounting /system as RW
In theory, all you should need to do is: busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
This didn't work for me, and I got a "permission denied (are you root)" error, I guess because the system was no longer booting properly. I had to redo some of the steps involved in rooting my device, in my case:
On phone:
mkdir /data/local/lib
echo ro.kernel.qemu=1 > /data/local.prop
reboot
(wait for reboot, and get into a root terminal again as per the above)
On PC (from previous files used for rooting my device):
adb push lsm_disabler.ko /data/local/lib/
Oh phone:
insmod /data/local/lib/lsm_disabler.ko
rm /data/local/lib/lsm_disabler.ko
cat > /data/local.prop
From this point, I was able to remount successfully:
mount -o remount,rw /system
Fixing sh
Now on your PC, push the replacement binary to /system/bin, in my case:
adb push mksh /system/bin
On phone:
cd /system/bin
busybox ln -sf sh mksh
Verify now that "./sh" gives you a working terminal.
If all is good:
mount -o remount,ro /system
reboot
All done! Wow, this saved me sending my device back to Japan, since it's still using the stock bootloader and there are now available update.zip's out there. Good luck everyone, feel free to ask questions :>
P.S. I'm going to contact BusyBox Pro's author now with some suggestions to prevent these kind of problems happening in the future.

I rant into the same problem on my Galaxy Tab. Thanks for this, it saved my day!
A little correction to this little thing:

This worked for me:
cd /system/bin
ln -sf mksh sh
chmod 755 sh
Thank you
Just want to say thanks.
Your Posting helped me out with the Problems on my htc flyer.
I installed BusyBox Pro by Stephen (Stericson) to fix a missing symlinks problem that I had after installing JRummy's Busy Box. I then encountered the applet not found problem and then just reinstalled JRummy's version and it fixed it without having to do anything else.

This helped get my wifi back after flashing a kernel.
Hey there,
I've got the same problem.
After reinstalling the ROM everything works fine,
but when I try to install busybox, I get the same failure everytimes.
How can I prevent it?
Do I have to follow the steps above?
And where do I get the sh binary from?
Sorry guys, I'm a little confused and hope you may help me..
Thanks!!
Kbox not open in my ics when I open it its automatically closed
And i want to ask the script su -s /system/bin/ash where i put this script

All Permissions Removed on a Folder!

I accidentally (sure!) removed all permissions on a folder in / so now the system can't even read it to display it in root explorer. Any way I can fix it? I've searched pretty hard and tried chmod and a couple other ideas in the terminal but nothing so far has worked.
Edit: Sry, didn't read properly. Please tell me which folder in / you removed all permissions from so I can look them up. The following commands with the given permissions should work though, but you have to replace / with the correct path to the folder.
Try it again with chmod:
Code:
su
chmod 755 /
"ls -ld /" should now show the flags "drwxr-xr-x".

That's what I tried. See the actual path is /.bak but when I chmod for that path, since it has no permissions, it says no such file or directory.
Even if it has no permission set u are able to operate on it with chmod. Please post the Output of "ls -ld /.bak"
If that also says "no such file or directory" then there simply is "no such file or directory"

Or are you maybe refering to a file in /mnt/sdcard (the internal user memory)?

I suppose it's not there. I had created the folder last night to store a few backups of files but when I woke up this morning the entire folder was missing. I'm not sure. ls reported no such file or directory. I guess there just isn't one. Thanks for the help. I'll hit the buttons.
I guess the problem is that / is mounted read-only.

Chmod weirdness. Not logical.

So I'm trying to test a script, test.sh which I saved in /cache. Chmod + x test.sh returns bad mode, Chmod 777 and others, 700, 666, etc. does nothing to change the file's permissions and no errors are given. Just for giggles ./test.sh returns not found. Rooted with Magisk, issued su beforehand, terminal app has root (Terminal Emulator). What gives?
Even more interesting....
ls -la shows no changes, however Power File Browser shows the script is 770 and is able to change permissions and shows the permissions changing. It also shows that the script now simply named test is also getting it's permissions changed with chmod, so perhaps there is an issue with ls -la in Stricson's Busybox? But why can't I ./ ?
Ok. Doing a which ls and which chmod shows /bin, but busybox is in /xbin, however calling busybox directly busybox ls -la and gives the same result doesn't show the +x but busybox chmod +x does work, so the chmod in the stock ROM doesn't support using +.
Busybox ./test does nothing either.
Found the issue with the file not running ./ and not found had #!/bin/sh and it requires #!/system/bin/sh at the top of the script.
In conclusion the ls -la command does not work correctly.
