So I've been eyeing this phone as my new phone after that 3-day Blackberry outage pushed me over the edge to look elsewhere. Like the small form factor (albeit chubby) and of course coming from Blackberries, I appreciate a real physical keyboard.
My one concern is the resolution on the 3" screen. The resolution on my current phone (Bold 9900) is VGA (640x480) on a 2.8" screen. Very sharp.
How is the HVGA (320x480) on the 3" screen of the Mini Pro? Does it make fonts jagged? Web browsing tolerable? Overall sharpness of icons?
Thanks in advance.
(just to add, the other phone I'm also looking at is the HTC Desire Z, but I've heard mixed reviews on the Z hinge and the keyboard itself. And I don't really need a large screen even though its nice for gaming, etc).
The screen looks absolutely great, compared to other phones with the same sized screen + resolution. Text isn't jagged at all, it's all anti-aliased properly. Web browsing is tolerable, however using a third party browser such as Opera Mini make it a lot easier. I'm not sure what you mean by 'sharpness of icons' but really, the screen is fine.
Thanks!
Does Opera Mobile 11 work on it, or only Opera Mini?

I find it very sharp, and eminently readable, but then I've only used HVGA phones. Anti-aliasing is really good imho (a lot better than my previous phone, but that was probably due to a far worse colour depth)

Opera Mobile should work fine, it worked on my previous phone (LGP500) and this one is better... I don't expect you'll have any problems here.
I have just tried out Opera Mobile and it works, it runs really well infact. Very smooth, and the pages load fairly quickly. Although Opera Mobile still loads web pages faster.

Hi there,
I've come from a Touch HD to a TP2 to this HTC Hero and just noticed the screen resolution.
Just a question for people using these already, how sharp is the picture quality? Is it a good quality, clear and precise screen? Any feedback on it? Example pictures of it etc?

Cheers mate, but these aren't real pictures of the phone, just computer generated ones by HTC. Ones I am looking for are actual pictures of users screens to see the clarity
You gotta realize something: The diamond / Touch Pro / Touch HD and _STILL_ the Touch Pro2 and Diamond2 are leading the pack when it comes to dot-pitch (amount of pixels cramped into an inch ).
3.2" with a 320x480 resolution is still 'normal to pretty good' these days.
That HTC managed to put 640x480 into 2.6" a year ago is still pretty much unmatched.
Just compare it to any G1 / Magic / iPhone around you. A lot of people have no complaints about it as far as I know. And the smaller resolution means the UI will probably be a bit more responsive / more smooth.
But yes, if you're used to the sharpness of HTC latest high-end WinMo devices (or the Xperia) this will be a step back. But I didn't even think twice about the resolution. I've often thought 640x480 was huge overkill on the screen of the Diamond.
for me the only issue is going from 3.8 to 3.2, resolution not so much
there's a 7 part hands on with Hero on youtube and i'm impressed, gotta have it as soon as possible :/

yeah i saw a preproduction model boot up (wasnt allowed to see anything else ) but it looked nice. It's very iphone-esque in screen quality...i'd say the palm pre tops them all just, the colours were sooo vibrant!
Coming from Diamond (480x640) to a G1, I am a bit disappointed in the resolution for pics and vids (pr0n viewing). But for the normal usage, there is no problem at all, because things aren't as tiny & busy in Android as WinMo anyway, so the user interface itself doesn't need a lot of pixels.
I know that there have already been posts about this but...... I played with my friends galaxy s - vodafone branded. Totally rubbish screen. Vibrant, oversaturated, and very very blurry - almost PSP screen blurry. It was awful, and text virtually unreadable. Then, both my parents got iPhone 4s. WOW. Screen is so sharp its beautiful. Atrix was looking great until I saw that it was RGBW rather than RGB. Why? Can anyone comment? Is it better/worse than galaxy s clarity wise? Better/worse than iPhone 4 clarity wise? Any photos MUCH appreciated. Thanks a lot
iPhone 4 > Motorola Atrix
iPhone 4 has a 3.5" screen with a resolution of 960 by 640.
Now this screen is just drop-dead gorgeous. And nobody can argue with that. It has a pixel density of 326 ppi. This is more than the human eye can see, and is thus named the 'Retina Display'
On the other hand, the Motorola Atrix is much newer and is running Android. It has a 540by 960 but a 4 inch display. This is considerably more blurry than the iPhone 4's display. It has a useless laptop dock but for $499 who will think to buy it?!?!?!?! It does not even have a proper OS on it!
Once you have used the iPhone 4 I can assure you that you will never return to the Motorola Atrix. Now if you are a gamer like me, then you need a good Applications Store. The Apple iPhone 4 has the Apple App Store with stunning applications with HD graphics. Whereas, the Motorola Atrix utilises the Android Market which has rubbish, useless, demo apps. The best application on the Android Market is probably Angry Birds, which has advertisements filling the screen and can become very buggy.
In conclusion, I believe that iPhone 4, albeit much older, is superior to the Motorola Atrix anyday. This shows how Apple remains victorious so far. Until the iPhone 5 is released.

yes, the pixel density of the iphone4 is better, but i assure you it's not so great you can't see it.
Trolls Trolls
Deary me, another appolyte . iSheep these days....
You have a point with the retina display being a higher PPI. Wow. It took a genius to figure that out. I'm trying to find out how much better it is, and I really can't take a trolls word for it :/
DarkyHero,
I want to thank you, I have not had a good laugh all day until reading your post.
kartik50,
First off i'd recommend to not pay any attention to trolls with some agenda and half baked inaccurate ideas.
But, moving on, in my family we have the Galaxy S, Iphone 4 and I have the Atrix. I do find the Iphone screen to be very good, no question about it however I personally liked the Galaxy S screen better. But that was until I got my Atrix. It was then I noticed how over saturated the Galaxy S looked (and as you said a little blurry, but not by much) when putting them side by side. As far as what one out of the three are the best? I think its personal preference and all 3 (to me) look very good. I'd pick the screen of the iPhone4 1st then the Atrix second. The Atrix is very sharp and clear and I'm having no complaints.
As far as the obvious far from fact-based claim from DarkyHero about the app market on Android.. I'm sure you recognize a troll for what they are.
I guess my eyes are just weird then. My freind standing right next to me, couldn't see any of the issues I could with the Galaxy s screen. We only looked at the Touchwiz Ui 3.0 text. However, iPhone blows me away. I have a 3GS right now, so I hope that the Atrix is far far superior. On a side note, Atrix vs Xperia Play? Both on Orange Uk, update months overdue.......
iPhone 4 wins as far as displays go. There isn't another mobile device on the market with a better screen. The Atrix has the best looking screen of any Android device, unless of course you like the oversaturated samsung super amoleds. The only use case where the Atrix's screen falls short is when brightness is cranked up to max, but there is honestly no need to do this unless you are trying to look at your phone in direct sun light.
I wish we were able to save you before the Apple troll showed up. Anyway.
iPhone 4 does have a beautiful screen, however, this 3.5" screen is way too small to enjoy. Once you try a +4" screen, you won't ever go back. Moreover, Atrix has the same footprint of iPhone 4, so you won't notice any extra bulk with the significantly bigger screen.
qHD is almost same as iPhone 4's screen resolution, so there should be no worries there either. As a matter of fact, given the widescreen you'll find on the Atrix, you'll see more pixels of your movies than you normally would on iPhone 4's square-ish display.
A BIG difference between iPhone 4 and Atrix is the dual-core Cortex A9-based Tegra 2 processor; you'll get a seemless FULL DESKTOP experience when browsing the web. With Opera Mobile 11, you'll be able to have iPhone-smoothness as well.
In response to darkyhero.
Is this a serious post? Or are you just this big of an idiot? The iTurd does not have a retina display, it was just marketing hype.

wow!
Something tells me dhero has never used an atrix, been an android power user, played starfox 64 on their atrix with a wiimote, or understood the walled garden of apple's for what it is: a fortress of steve jobs devoid of hacking(the good kind), pornography, and meant for people of all ages, like the 13 year old darky hero here. Judging by your blind optimism for iOS and writing, maybe steve jobs was on the money making a sanitized kids toy. Oh wait its not a kids toy it shatters like a wine glass from 4 feet. Ok, I guess he just wants your money. Every year. You cannot even swap the damn batteries out, my last smartphone lasted me 3 years with 4 batteries. And yes it got five days of solid use with an extended battery...
Ugh don’t get me started on apple and their financial brilliance(their financial success often comes at the cost of their customers, *cough* apple tax *cough*).
So - clarity wise can anyone say its better than SGS? Also- I just saw a review from PhoneDog saying that Nexus S>Atrix? WTF? I mean lag lag lag lag thats all the Atrix was doing? I know there arent any custom roms - Damn you motorola! - but will there be fixes? I know what its like to get a cutting edge phone that became obsolete (samsung Tocco). BTW u guys reply FAST. Thanks!
Definitely. SGS has a 480x800 sceen. Clarity will definitely be better than that.

I haven't seen any lag on my phone. Granted, I'm coming from a Touch Pro, so anything should seem fast buuuut...
Get Opera Mobile from the marketplace for a web browser and it clips along pretty good.
So it's not android optimization for dual core? If thats the case, then why te f.u.c.k did Moto even put on blur?!
I have two screenshots with accompanying pictures of the screen for comparison:
http://www.mylilsite.net/images/atrix/homescreen1.png
http://www.mylilsite.net/images/atrix/homescreen1-t2i.jpg
You'll notice any solid color ends up being "checkerboarded" by the PenTile screen.
http://www.mylilsite.net/images/atrix/speakPrompt1.png
http://www.mylilsite.net/images/atrix/speakPrompt1-t2i.jpg
The gradient was already weird (blocky?) in the screenshot, but on the actual screen it just looks terrible.
I notice the PenTile color "checkerboarding" all the time in w/e apps or videos and it is a distraction but for me it isn't a deal breaker.
Thanks so much for posting these pics! You call it checkerboarding, I call it blurriness but this is it - the thing I saw on the galaxy s. Well if it's back.... Mainly this screen will be used for gaming, movies and web browsing. I'd say movies will be below par due to bad colour- gaming too and email mucked up due to pentile. Plz correct me- bc it's looking quite grim...

The Atrix has a 4" display with 540 x 960 resolution. This is higher pixel density than almost every other phone on the market except the iPhone 4. The iPhone, however, only has a 3.5" display, and once you have used a 4" display for any length of time (or even a 3.7") it is very hard to loose that extra space. It is the highest resolution and pixel density android phone available (except for that Sharp one in Japan that is an NTT DoCoMo exclusive and uses the same display Sharp supply to Apple).
PenTile is laid out RRB GGB so you have RGB, just two lots of each. Unless you are insanely fussy about screens, you will not notice. Plus it will look better than most other screens purely for having a higher pixel density.
I wouldn't worry about it being PenTile. Have a look at this http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/4 .
I considering to buy either an Xperia Mini Pro or the new Live Walkman (basicly the same phone but without QWERTY keyboard but with a 3.2" screen) for my girlfriend who has an iPhone4 right now. The reason is that she dislikes the weak signal reception of the iphone4 and some other minor things.
My questions for the Mini Pro and Live Walkman users are:
1. how is the signal reception?
2. is the screen too small if you go from an 3.5" iphone4?
3. how is the battery life compared to iphone4?
4. is the Mini Pro too thick?
Thanks
A comparison between xperia mini pro and iphone4 ?! :/
led zeppelin vs ricky martin ?
Signal is "normal", screen is smaller than iphone 4...seriously just send your gf to the nearest shop so that she can test it in her hands coz it's a real big change from iphone 4
Thank you but I will consider another phone. I just read a poll were 22 out of 31 people were not happy with the signal reception of the Mini Pro.

Yeah, I don't find it great either. But as a phone it's great (bang for buck wise).
My previous phone was LGP500 Optimus One, another example of a great bang-for-buck phone; I feel reception was better there. Plus, it's dirt cheap (but it's ARMv6 so no flash for you)
Anyone come from a Blackberry or were previously a blackberry user, comment on the keyboard of the Mini Pro?
I have test the xperia mini pro sk17 keyboard and a BOLD 3 keyboard, both are so ****in great, but the xperia mini pro keyboard is better, bigger, and is in a smaller phone
sorry for my english!
By Bold 3 do you mean the 9780 or the 9900?
are the mini pro keys clicky or more mushy?
how is the build quality, does it feel like a 'cheap phone'?
They give great tactile feedback. Clicky.
And I think build quality is really good, except that in closed form, the first 2 mm of opening could feel a little less soft.

Here's my score after 1 Week of using a Xperia mini pro (sk17i).
I was using a LG o2x (optimus speed) before.
Hardware 8/10.
Pretty good for such a small phone, everyhing opens in a fraction of a second
It's strong enough to play psx emulators and N64 games, which is awesome.
Call Quality 7/10.
Pretty good here in germany. I've seen loads of people complaining about it, but it's fine here.
Physical Keyboard 9/10.
Best keyboard ive ever had on a mobile phone. Great pressure point, nicely illuminated. AND YOU CAN ****ING USE IT TO PLAY GAMES
The only downside: the first row of buttons is too close to the display-slider.
People with stubby fingers shouldnt get this phone, lol.
Screen 7/10.
Could use a few more options like turning off the ambient lightning, but it's great for such a small phone.
Battery 6/10
Lasts roughly 2 days with light usage. 1 day of heavy usage is enough to drain the battery completely. I believe i need to root it and uninstall all the crapware draining my battery life. It's okay though, i'm used to heavy battery drain, my optimus did the same.
Price 10/10.
Only 200€ for 1,2 ghz, 512mb ram and a 8Gb micro SD what more could i ask for?
The hardware is well implemented and the screen never lags for me.
Sadly it isnt made of gorilla glas, but i use screen protectors anway.
Overall 7,5/10
This phone is of course not made for multimedia lovers. It's a great device for people who text alot, play some games, do some calls and carry it around in their pants pockets. For my needs only, i'd give it a 9/10. 10/10 if SE
actually fixes some stuff like the ambient light sensor ****.
Plus, it's an eye catcher Everytime i slide out the keyboard people are like "ooooh show me your phone :O"
Hey,i have Live with Walkman and i think you should get it...
it's a good phone and has a reallyyyy great sound!
if she likes mousic she'll love it...all round it can do pretty much anything, play games with good quality/performance,it's very fast,5mp shooter with 720p video and led flash it's a great all-round phone, very complete...especially for the price!
Also it has good reception(not a problem to me with this phone)
the screen is just fine(i had a Galaxy S with a 4"inch screen before and i think it's display is quite good actually)
i use it all the time and the night only needs recharge(If you root it and use setcpu it can last even longer!!)
and finally it's quite slim and very very stylish...
Hope i've helped!!
Is it just me or does this lag a little.?!
Don't get me wrong i love it, it's just i have a nexus 5 with the snapdragon 800 in it and it's perfectly smooth.
It's quick.. but not as good, particularly in web browsing zooming and scrolling. (sometimes you touch things when you dont mean too, sometimes it's slow to pinch zoom, maybe this is the touch screen issue not shaw.. )
Hopefully it's just software and sony will get it better. With this hardware it should be perfect!
Have you upgraded the firmware to the latest available ? Some people reported occasional lags that went away after upgrading.
yes I'm on 402..but my nexus 5 is smoother and it shouldn't be..anyway I'm still happy..
The touch screen does have a grounding issue, of which the severity seems to differ per device. Maybe that's what you are experiencing.
A 10.1 inch tablet which has the same specifications and is exactly as fast as a 5 inch smartphone will ALWAYS seem more laggy!
This is just because lags which are very small on the phone (bordering on un-perceivable) are magnified on the tablet and thus seem more severe!
But in reality it's just a matter of scale, an optical "illusion".
the nexus 5 has resolution 1080 x1920 and a slower cpu snapdragon 800...
i think maybe it is a touch screen issue, it's a bit random.
I'm sure sony will get it better..
Nexus has same resolution. Nexus is a pure android software with minimal background processes. Sony has customized their own ui with extra and not as optimized background processes. There is also the scale thing, where as u won't notice lag on small screen as much as big screen.
Ur welcome

Yes, right.
Coreo, you can use alternative launcher instead of the Sony one; you can root the device and disable/uninstall the Sony bloatware/unnecessary background processes.

The Z2 tablet actually has a marginally higher resolution of 1920x1200 pixels.
fair enough... but it still feels smoother and quicker.. yes I've rooted, deleted a few sony apps, replaced the keyboard with swift keyboard and installed nova launcher..
PS im not complaining, it's still fast and am very happy with it. im just comparing it against the snap dragon 800, as a fair or unfair comparison it may or may not be..
in someways its a good thing as sony have room to improve..
Hi
So I have been thinking of upgrading to this one from my note pro. The only thing that turns me off is that this uses AMOLED, which is awful for static displays (like drawing) and that it degrades over time. Is this still an issue with this one? I plan to use this for long like my Note Pro.
Thanks!
I've been using Amoled screens for years and never had burnin the key is never have anything static on the screen for long periods of time, use dark wallpaper without any high contrast elements on screen. High contrast for any moving elements is not a problem, it is static images that should be avoided.
I use my S7+ to do sketches and I love it. I tried once the ipad pro to do drawings and I have to say the S7+ is very similar to it. Brilliant colors on high brightness and super resonsable spen. Also handwriting is very smooth. I dont draw very static i do a lot of pinch to zoom and rotate while drawing.
I really can recommend it for artists. I attched a sketch made with Autodesk Sketchbook.

No, there is no problem I used Clipstudio for more than 5 hours on full brightness and there was no burn-in.
