NOTE 1: IF YOU ARE UNROOTED AND ALREADY UPDATED WITH OTA, YOU CAN STILL USE THE PROCESSES BELOW TO ROOT AND FLASH RECOVERY.
>> Rooting Samsung Fascinate
>> Flashing Clockwork Recovery
NOTE 2: IF YOU ARE ROOTED AND WANT TO KEEP ROOT, DO NOT INSTALL VERIZON OTA UPDATE. WAIT FOR DEVELOPERS TO POST A ROOTED UPDATE.
If something went wrong and you did not have recovery installed, use Odin to restore system to stock >> Odin Restore files to get you to stock
If something went wrong, but you are still able to get into clockwork recovery >> Stock Nandroid Image
NOTE 3: IF YOU ARE ROOTED, HAVE LAGFIX AND APPS REMOVED, DO NOT INSTALL VERIZON OTA UPDATE. YOU WILL RUN INTO ISSUES. YOU NEED TO COMPLETELY GO BACK TO STOCK, THEN UPDATE. YOU WILL LOSE ROOT.
If you want to stop the OTA update notification, use this file which provides simple edits...but be careful as it may make further updates more difficult >> SCH-I500.DI01 Update
UPDATED:
OTA Update with Root and Busybox >> DH12 to DI01 update with root and busybox
Please post corrections and I will update the OP...I see too many people messing up their devices. Just want to help.
My path.
1) Stock with root mentioned in this dev section
2)restored CW backup
3)used CW to install the update mentioned in this thread.
No problems so far.
After reading this thread again I went to stock and stock kernel. Rooted and gold again.
I think that CPU Scale app causes the Fascinate to shut down, so if you use it and getting them.... remove the app or let me know if you fixed.
Thanks!!!
Now, here is something I didn't try yet. I am still stock (not rooted), ran the OTA...and with all people having issues, I am scared to root. I want to try but I think I will wait and see if anyone else does this.

I thought the post about doing the OTA manually would allow you to keep root, seeing that it's a stripped down version.
Let me clarify that. If that's the case, I can update the OP.
Restored, updated and Rerooted
All is well. No problems so far.
Guys, pay attention to that update file. It is only updating modem.bin, and then updating your version number so you don't get nagged for an update. There are many more patches/updates in this fix than just modem.bin, and by doing only modem.bin you make it a bit more difficult on yourself to update down the road.
If that's all you want, go ahead and use it, but in no way did JT intend for this to get distributed as "this is what you should use if you have root" update.
Read before using, that's all I ask.

Do you have to go back to stock first before rooting? Or can you just run the root OVER the update? Thanks.

I don't think the update blocks root. you should be able to install the OTA as long as your not rooted, then once it is installed go ahead and root your device.
Ok...looks like root went thru...working on cwm recovery now.
OK, recovery installed successfully...running a backup right now.
Should I test restoring? Or should I assume I am safe?
Rooting after OTA update.
Can someone give a diffinative answer please. Can we root after the OTA update or does the update block root?

If you have CWM installed, you always have root via adb, which means you can get your root apps working.
If you're not running CWM, I don't know. Someone who's tried rage.bin post-update could tell you.

Yes you can root after update, I did it fine, but had to attempt it twice, the first try it hung, so had to do a battery pull, and then the second time it worked fine.
Nothing in the update seems worth it to return to stock (I've removed so many stock apps already.)
I'm having the Force Close loop issue. My CWR seems to be missing, as all I can access is Android system recovery <2e> with the options of:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Using the Odin method didn't work for me, on multiple tries. My SD card appears to be wiped clean and I can't enter debug mode.
Is there anything short of a miracle that I can do to fix my phone? I've seen a few posts with people saying they had similar problems as mine, but there was never and explanation of how or if they fixed there phone.
Thanks in advance
3 weeks ago, I bought a gTablet and then flashed it with TnT lite after installing Clock work Mod. Before updating, I took the backup using CWM. When I saw there eas a OTA update available from Viewsonic, using CWM I restored from the backup.
Now the tablet shows me OTA update is available and after download and install, the tablet boots and then fails updating. When the tablet boots, I see an Android icon with an exclamation mark. Only option for me is to power off and restart to boot properly. Is it because of CWM installed? Of yes, Is there a simple way to remove like how CWM was installed easily?
Or Can I get the OTA update via an update.zip from somebody?
Thanks and appreciate all the goodwork in this forum.
Yes, it's because of CWM - you need the original bootloader. You need to do an NVFlash back to stock to be able to get the OTA update.
Just curious as to why you want it?
Search for 3588 update and flash it
The reason I want to go back and update the OTA update was I wanted to know what Viewsonic has done in terms of performance update and UI changes and so on. Also one think I noted with TnT lite was the while scrolling and viewing messages, the UI was giving a 'Shivering' lool and then correct itself. YouTube wouldnt work at all, Google voice gives error all the time etc. Once I went back to stock ROM (after restore) it works.
Also my spouse kind of liked the organized UI from viewsonic but of course complained about the sluggishness.
I searched for 3588 zip file and could not find anywhere? Does somebody have it?
Thx.
You should be able to download it directly from the tapntap update server:
http://tapntap.http.internapcdn.net/tapntap/viewsonic/update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip
(Thanks to Roebeet for this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000)
I use the "update.zip" method, by putting it on my microSD card, along with the recovery folder and the correct "command" file that directs it to look at the microSD card for an update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892090
Thanks for the help with the above. I downloaded the file and then successfully updated to 3588.
I finally gave in to the update nagging screen and tried to update.
My phone was rooted with preinstall method, nothing else.
I was on 2.3.4 (4.5.91).
I installed RootKeeper and unrooted before the update (kept root backup).
The phone downloaded the update, restarted, and I saw the Android Icon and an "unpacking" progress bar. The bar stopped about half way and the icon turned into an exclamation point. I thought I was toast....
The phone rebooted fine, everything still there. I got a message box "Update failed" once I got on my home screen. The phone is still 2.3.4. The update nagging is gone.
I have pretty rare reboots, maybe 2 a month. I am quite happy with it.
Anyone had the same issue? Should I even bother going to 2.3.6?
The only thing I am really missing on the Atrix is HDMI mirroring option with 720p or 1080p up-conversion.
How can I get the cause for the "fail"? Should I use the Moto USB method?
I wouldnt mind going to CM9 but I want the Finger Sensor, Camera etc all to work. I dont want to loose any current functionality going to CM9 and its not there yet, correct?
Thanks!
I would just stay where you are at. Unless you really want the mirroring. You seem to not mind stock so I would wait for Moto to release ICS for the Atrix. They put it on the list.
if you only rooted, did nothing else that requires root (freeze apps, put files in /system, etc) and did not unlock the bootloader, just unroot and then apply the 2.3.6. update.
Code:
1. Open Android Terminal Emulator (ADB)
2. Type in the following commands, hitting ENTER after each line of code: (after typing 'su' below, look for the Superuser request and approve it, you can only continue if you get the # prompt.
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 /preinstall
rm /system/bin/su
rm /preinstall/sqlite3
rm /preinstall/dosu
rm /preinstall/Superuser.apk
rm /preinstall/su
reboot
3. Let the phone reboot fully and then go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > find Superuser and uninstall it just like any other app.
thx guys,
so you are saying that it failed because the unroot in rootkeeper did not do it right?
so with the manual unroot it should work? is there anyway to see why the update failed? log file or smth?
Thanks

There have been posts in various 2.3.6 threads where rootkeeper did not work if you used the fastboot preinstall method.
It should work if you manually unroot as long as everything else is stock.
for seeing why the update failed, hold the Volume up and power button when the error appears and you should see some sort of error msg...never tried it myself though.
I have the same issue. I used the preinstall root as well as unroot. I have not found a way to install the update. I tried OTA (I am locked) and I also tried to install from SD.
No dice

Did you undo everything that requires root access prior to applying the OTA? I usually do the following prior to an OTA (and redo once the OTA is applied):
uninstall Swype beta, restore stock Swype files (the so and apk files)
move ringtones out of /system/media
Help Needed
Hi All,
I am a newbie here and I am not sure if my question makes any sense. Couple weeks back, I bought an Atrix 4g (US version), an unlocked version (the seller told me that this phone is unlocked using AT&T code) and I am using it with Vodafone (India) sim. It works perfectly and so far I didnt face any problems with this phone. But last week, I got an alert in phone saying that software update (2.3.4.5.141) is available for AT&T users and enable wifi to download. However, I didnt download and install the update as I was not sure why is it saying the update is available only for AT&T users. Also wherever I read about this software udpate, the name 'AT&T users' come along with that.
So my doubt here is, what will happen if I, who is not an AT&T user, download and install the software update in my phone ? will it cause any issues in the phone (like getting locked again or bricking the phone)
I have not done any modification like rooting or installing custom ROM and things like that and I am using the phone as I recieved it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

HEAD TO DROID X2 GENERAL TO MY THREAD THERE IS A LITTLE BIT MORE INFO ALL ON THIS!!!!![/B]Droid X2 owners i have figured out how to root the new 2.3.5/1.3.418 update. I spent a couple hours trying to get this figured out. Its simple and very easy to do well may not be for some but here you go just follow these simple steps and all that trouble that everybody is having.... here is the solution! First off do a hard reset from phones setting under privacy make sure to copy and paste pictures, music etc. to your computer cause you will have to check internal storage to be deleted for this to work ..after the reset u are going to sbf back to original 2.3.4 with (RSD Lite) Remember it has to be done in this order just take my word for it ...when finished.. phone will reboot let all factory apps download and install including gmail,
vz navigator, google books etc. You will not have to keep these apps you just have to let them install for this update after you sbf 2.3.4 and back to original. When your done with sbf file... Get (Petes Motorola RootTools_v1.07.zip) no other rooting methods worked ive tryed it.. type that into google search it should find his site.. and make sure to download (Windows Universal drivers) for computer depending on what you have 32 bit operating system or 64 bit.. both of these files can be found on petes site. After downloading drivers and zip file..... unzip petes zip and click on (petes motorola root tools). I had one issue with this when trying to root device i had to put phone into pc mode for some reason. And if still having issues try running the adb temp rooting procedure this seems to work everytime. Run rooting method till done then u should be rooted after this is done dont mess with SU leave it as is for now.... Now you are going to want to head to the the google market on your phone and type (ota rootkeeper) and download that app. After this is done you can go to that app and and press protect root it should say something like su safe or something like that at the bottom. Now when u are sure u have all these done correctly go to your phone settings and go to about phone and press on system update and download and install update to your phone. It will reboot and and install update after this is done let phone load back up and do what it needs to do. Now go back to google market and install ota rootkeeper again and you should get only one option and that is to restore root.. press that and there you have it. Now you can update SU and remove unwanted apps. Do whatever you please. This update has caused so many droid x2 owners to get very ticked off but luckily i found the solution to all the problems. If anybody is having any issues trying to get this done leave posts and messages i will help you out as much as i can. This process went really smooth you should have no issues at all. And if ur wondering about 2.3.5 it is deff. snappier with and even more snappier with bloatware apps removed. Install the droid X2 bootstrap manager just like u always would. HAVE FUN ROOTING>
The above instructions worked for me BUT I did it without factory resetting my phone and without wiping any of my data my phone is now rerooted with the OTA Update 1.3.418.
1. DO NOT factory reset your phone or wipe your data.
2. Re-flash your DroidX2 with RSDlite using the original sbf file.
RSDlite:

My original flash file here:
http://www.general-files.com/downlo...Z_MB870_4.5.1A-DTN-150-30_1FF_01.sbf.zip.html
3. Re-activate your phone with *228.
4. Using Pete’s Motorola RootTools_v1.07.zip run Pete's Motorola Root Tools.exe.
Wait for Pete’s root tool to finish.
5. Now that you are rooted again, run ota rootkeeper, press protect root.
6. Go to your phone settings, About Phone and click on system update and
download and install the OTA update 1.3.418 to your phone.
7. After the phone reboots, run the ota rootkeeper and restore root.

zergrush does not work!! To all that that wondering why it dosent work it changes something in the build prop or local prop not sure but it does not work for rooting 2.3.5. And also.. For some people they may not have to do a internal factory reset, in my case i did for what reason.. i dont know. Every time i tryed installing OTA update it failed. For the people getting this error you will most likely have to reset your device and follow my instructions. PLEASE READ MY INSTRUCTIONS first before making any changes if u dont want to lose root lose saved music , apps etc.... Remember internal factory reset erases everything in internal memory. Move your things you want to save to ur sdcard
Thanks mnkurk! Saved me a lot of time - work right the first time and allowed me to fully restore my setup from titanium (with backup folder on the sd card).
Using voodoo root keeper to root 2.3.5 update has been known since the update came out.
zerg rush cant be used for a number of reasons,.some people might be able to get away with it, but a lot of times it will cause the 2.3.5 update tofail the signature check , it removes/changed files on system besides just su, to make room for root.

Considering I have to flash my ROM i'd prefer a reliable source to get the file.

If you can get/have the 2.3.3 file, just flash that...then take the ota once and you will be on 2.3.4
should I root 2.3.3-> ota 2.3.4-> ota 2.3.5
or Flash 2.3.3-> ota 2.3.4 then Root-> ota 2.3.5
What is the benefit of going as far back as 2.3.3?

Wait till 2.3.4 to root
No reason to root 233 it will just lose root when you ota any ways
Root .4
Then root keeper app
Then ota .5 and restore root with root keeper app
If going to flash a ROM after that, after you restore root, delete the su backup using the root keeper app before you flash the ROM or the rom flash will fail on ya

I don't know of there is any KNOWN benefit
But i know that before when i had a bunch of battery issues and other things acting weird, i went ALL THE WAY to froyo, then rode all the ota's back to 2.3.4 and things seemed better for me.
Take with a grain of salt tho, i never did any "official" testing on it., just know it fixed weird issues i had with device not sleeping properly.
i was just suggesting it cause it it's easier than having to find and then wait for 2.3.4 sbf file to download If you already had the 2.3.3 file
So, now there is a gray triangle in the top right (which apparently stands for roaming) I checked my phone status and it reads
Network: Unknown
My Phone Number: 000-000-7729
I went against your advice because I already had 2.3.4, but that shouldn't have caused this, right?
few options
reboot
wipe data or just cache in android recovery
dial *228
turn on airplane mode or turn on wifi then turn off, reboot
all SBF or here ezSBF/ RSD lite/ SBF/ drivers by 1KDS or here
Droid SBF files http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
edit: some people with issues, have reported had to wipe data before and after, and even flashing SBF twice, before getting it fixed
but the options I listed first usually fix network connection errors
not listed in any order, just as they popped in my head
As stated above
Just dial *228
Should fix that
it gives you two options i believe.
Do both if first doesn't fix it
Thanks so much! If i could thank you more than once I would!
I had to leave for work and I was so bummed out my phone wasn't getting service.
All I had to do was activate it
2.3.5 (Still wish it was ICS) and rooted!
Thanks again!
The above instructions worked for me without factory resetting my phone and
without wiping any of my data my phone is now rerooted with the OTA Update 1.3.418.

Rooted 2.3.4 to rooted 2.3.5
I'm on 2.3.4, rooted. I have downloaded but not installed 2.3.5. I previously froze, but didn't delete bloatware using Titanium.
Do you think I can just install rootkeeper, defrost bloatware, then install 2.3.5 & keep root?
I'm kind of an idiot trying to keep it simple.
Thanks in advance,
George
Success!!! This worked nicely. It just took a long time to defrost the bloatware, then freeze even more bloat when it was re-rooted as there was so much on there.
OTA Rootkeeper is a thing of beauty, it's fast & noob-proof. Thanks for that!
