I have seen this issue on other phone forums via search, but I seem to be the only one with this happening on a Vibrant. Every time I get message the yellow icon comes up on the notification bar but then the old school white message icon comes up too and the drop down just says I have unread messages.
I tried turning off the notifications in the messaging options but that removes both the yellow envelope icon (I want that) but not the unread messages (white postcard). Even after "read" the messages it stays there until I hit clear notifications then pops back up when I get a new reply.
Anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this? I am rooted running the stock ROM with the recent OTA update.
I also checked the SIM for any stored or saved messages and at one point deleted every text I had.
It sound slike you have another msging app installed - like HandCent or something.

Hello.
I have problem with unread sms notification (not in "top status bar") bellow big clock on lock screen. I use GO SMS app, but it occur in Chomp SMS, SMS Popup and not in Handcent. When I receive SMS it normal show notification text, I open sms, notification in top status bar dissapear, sms it's read, but when I lock screen there is still info shows one unread sms. It only dissapear when I open stock SMS app. In stock app sms of course is read.
I have turn off notifications in stock SMS app.
How to fix that?
Android 2.2 rooted, but on 2.2.1 problem still happen.
Same here, this is the reason that i have returned to Handcent...A bit resource hog but it integrates in system much better than any other sms app out there.
Same problem here, its really annoying.
I wonder if removing the stock sms app would help, but i'm affraid it would still be the same, but then without any way to get rid of the unread message on the lock screen.

I never send any MMS, so that would not be a problem.
But would removing the stock sms application cause other problems, like being unable to send/receive sms's, or perhaps something totally unexpected?
I have removed stock sms app about two months ago, and I don't have any problems - mms work correctly. But You must enable option in important tips in go sms - "Stock app removed".
Install both handcent and go sms... only keep the notifications of go sms.. thts it u dont get any sms notifications on your lockscreen.!!
Hi all,
So I noticed that after the update the other night that I am now getting dual text messages (handcent and stock). I can't remember for the life of me disable the stock messaging app so I'm not getting dual notifications. Does anyone else know? Thanks
edit: wow I am an idiot. for some reason i thought that disabling notifications through the message app would affect handcent as well. problem fixed
handcent-->it's the second menu --> replace as main messenger.
Hi,
I've had my SGS3 for a few weeks now and I've noticed one issue that keeps happening. When I receive a new SMS I either don't get a notification OR it show up late. If I open the messaging app, I'll often find that there are new messages in there but I won't have had a notification either on the top bar, on the homescreen icon/widget or on the lockscreen.
Is this common and are there any known fixes? I've compared my messaging settings to those of a colleague at work who also has an SGS3 and they're exactly the same.
For now I've switched the Handcent SMS which covers most of the problem but it means I still don't get a notification on the lockscreen when I receive a new message.
My handset is a UK model, software build number IMM76D.I9300XXBLG8
Thanks,
DC
Hello,
I'm using Android 5.1.1 (unofficial CyanogenMod 12.1) on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
When I receive a text message, I get a notification (ringtone + vibration + icon in notification bar + LED flashing…) except for ONE contact, for which I don't get ANY notification. I need to manually open the SMS app to see their messages.
If I get another SMS from another contact before checking, the notification area will display both messages though.
I actually behaves as if I had filtered out notification for that contact only, but :
1- I don't remember how I could do that
2- I checked every notification option I could think of, to no avail…
As a last resort, I'm asking you guys here… How can I reactivate notifications for that contact ?
I found the solution, so I'll answer to myself : resetting the SMS app to default parameters solved the problem, as it seemed to be circumvented to that app (I did not lose my messages).
I still don't know how I ended up in that situation though…
