USB HELP! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My vibrant usb no longer works, Phone charges and detects usb cable (option to mount) but my PC doesn't show phone in device manager...
I've tried cleaning usb, multiple usb cables, and different PC's!
Has anyone had problems like this before? I find it hard to believe out of the blue my usb hw failed... Hoping this is some how fixable... because I need odin access to the phone
any help would be appreciated, thanks

make sure you have drivers?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929

Yes, I've tried new and old drivers making sure to properly remove them before trying the other... Problem is even if drivers weren't installed Device manager would indicate a unusable or unrecognized device? all PC's i've tried don't indicate any device connected.
My other vibrant works fine on all PC's only my Gf's is having a problem...

Could be usb failing I had to send mines in 2 weeks ago and they replaced the usb at no cost. Just make sure you call the galaxy s support if you plan on sending it in to fix. I got ny phone back within 4 days.

[Q] Device not recognized by ANY computer now

Hey guys, I did try searching, but if I missed a post please link.
Problem is this: Randomly at the beginning of the week 3G stopped working, and along with that (probably unrelated, but never-the-less...) the phone, when plugged into any computer, would not be recognized ("Unrecognized Device" and under device status is it would say "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"). I did fix the 3G issue, but the phone still won't connect to any computer.
I've tried on computers with and without samsung drivers, with the phone both in and out of debug mode, usb storage both on and off. Currently on my PC it sees that it is a samsung device, but it has the yellow triangle, signifying that it still cannot start the device. Cannot ADB into it obviously, and cannot even get ODIN to see it when in download mode. Yes, I've also tried 2 different cables.
Using Windows 7 on all the computers I've tried it on (don't own anything older unfortunately/fortunately) and currently using ComRom 2 RC 2 PBJ (though this started on ComRom 1.3, and have tried the OTB kernel as well) thoughts?
Thanks guys!
Have you tried booting to CWM while plugged into the usb? That usually fixes it for me.
what i do is go to device managers look for your device and make sure the right drivers are installed once you install the drivers everything should be good

just gave that a shot. new dialog box popped up "usb device not recognized".
I'm probably going to try and go back to stock, but I'm not sure if that is really the issue.
Same thing here.. no idea what to do.. last time this happened I installed/uninstalled drivers until I thought I was going to puke.. even now I'm on a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 with SP1.. so .. this is really starting to suck!! Plug in the device and INSTANTLY "device unknown"... Yeah.. right!
Have both of you tried changing usb setting from mass storage to ask on connection? Uncheck usb debugging, go into usb settings change it from mass storage to ask on connection, go back and turn on usb debugging, then connect phone to computer.

I will do this promptly and post if there is a success story.. har har!! Thanks for the tip.. we'll see..
/EDIT/ Does nothing... nothing at all.. I hear the sound when USB is connected to Win7 ... then immediately says "unknown device" doesn't even seem to try and pull drivers.. it's almost ready to fly out the window...
/EDIT2/ Well I just got one step closer... I basically uninstalled ALL USB hosts, etc. Restarted, they installed.. then plugged phone in.. recognized, got the "installing device drivers", then FAILED to install... I'm lost.
Now here is the actual message that I am getting, I can only assume OP is too...
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Oddly enough, I'm not getting that. I'm getting error 10, device failed to start. I'm sure these are related somehow.
Also, I did try the above suggestion, with no success. I did notice though after I unchecked "usb debugging", told it to ask on connection, then re-enabled usb debugging i get "no accessibility services" which I'm not sure is an issue, but it is never-the-less an error message. does everyone get that message?
thanks for the help everyone

I get that message everytime I check usb debugging. Just click OK and everything should be fine.
All I know is that it's out-right ridiculous.. I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with either of our phones since this has worked fine to this point.. I'm just trying to get back to stock using ODIN .. but can't .. I am so frustrated I can't figure it out..
Something interesting here.. I plugged the USB cable into a port and windows said it was an unknown device.. I just plugged the cable in.. bad cable issues??
I have been attempting to fix this very problem for weeks. Nothing has worked. It won't even recognize the phone in Recovery or Download mode (Odin or Heimdall). I'm getting tempted to request a phone replacement.
For me it started right after I installed blackberry drivers on Win7 x64. Does anyone else have this in common? Maybe recently installed other USB drivers? Perhaps the problem and the install are mere coincidence? Anyway I ordered a new USB cable so I'll give that a try.
Also, has anyone trided naven's format utility? I'm starting to think this may be the signs of the USB port dying.
I wonder.. will there be an issue for service if I have a rooted phone with custom rom installed? That's the only issue right now about sending the phone back.. and the more I think and mess around with it.. if I hold the plug snug in the phone and wiggle the cable some, I can connect and disconnect... I think my cable is messed up ...
I think I have my issue resolved... Usb cable is bad... My buddy has the same cable end to his phone charger and it will charge my phone... And now my cable won't even do that... Need to find a usb cable to verify but it seems these cables are very sensitive... Check your cable OP...

I will update on if my issue is fixed when I get my usb cable on wednesday. Fyi, the samsung cable is available on amazon with prime shipping for around $2-3.

Just picked up a USB cable from Walmart .. not a bad deal and guess what? Fixed 100% ... Was a bad USB cable. Never again will I use the Samsung USB cables.. only lasted about 3 months.. LoL.. All fixed!!! YAY!!!! OP - I think you will be all set as well once you get your new cable..
Replaced the cable and I still have the error. =(
I'm not sure what else I can even try...
EDIT: Fixed it. Uninstalled all USB drivers from my system and let windows reinstall them. toggled USB debugging on the device and mock locations on and it works. What an odd problem..
I Also solved this issue with a new cable. I had tried a different cable and still had the same problem.
So I wasted much of two days troubleshooting. Finally arranged for a warranty replacement but still had the same problem. I was getting ready to do a clean installation of windows and it struck me. Try a new cable, even though the two cable test ruled that out.
I figured that was worth a try before rebuilding windows.
The new cable fixed the problem. The 2 cable test should have revealed this. It's possible I had two issues and the warranty replacement and the cable fixed it.
Sorry that a second cable didn't fix the problem for the person above me.

HELP HELP Driver issues

I recently have had ny prime go into a cwm recovery loop (cwn 5.8.2.0) my tablet had gummy 1.2.3 installed and was working fine , now that I'm stuck in this loop I cannot vget my XP compter to recognize it as anything but UNKNOWN DEVICE, I've tried various different drivers usb ports etc to no avail any help appreciated in bringing my tablet back
If I could get XP to see it I cohuld use adb to fix just don't understand this driver issue.
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
I've actually had this happen twice, I just tried every adb driver i found, installed and uninstalled them, connected and unconnected the prime,
suddenly it just worked. Universal naked drivers didn't work for me, found a adb.rar or .zip file in a thread somewhere that worked in the end.
This is not a hard brick so you should be able to get out of it.

Solved with the purchase of a OEM charger and sync cable from Office Depot. Turns out that the cables supplied with tablet are very frail and can loose soldered connections easily, so even though it may still charge the tablet it doesn't function correctly as a sync cable. Those of you like me who are hard on your cables well be extra careful. Hope this helps anyone who's been going thru the frustration I have.

Mass storage and odin

Me and my husband both have Verizon fascinates and mine has aokp m6 glitch..no probs...my husband is plain stock and he's been losing service and whatnot so i was going to reboot his rom still with stock
Now the problem...i can't get the PC to recognize his phone...reinstalled drivers etc...works for mine though...when i tried Odin the phone would go into download mode but Odin would not add it...but will mine...any ideas if why this may be happening?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I'm having the same problem. Does it connect to Odin while on in debugging mode? I was told that if it does to use abd to find out if the drivers are working correctly. Also does it pop up and says the the device has errored and can't connect?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda app-developers app
I see this a lot. Sometimes its the cable, and sometimes its the phone itself. I had the hardest time getting Odin to work. It was a cable issue. I bought a BlackBerry data cable and voila! It was working again.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I've tried like 10 diff cables...and they'll all workfor my phone just not his...i don't know if i can access adb on his being it's not rooted or anything...and i can't root it without Odin recognizing it...when i connect it to mass storage the phone itself recognizes it's connected (sometimes)...but the pc just keeps saying it doesn't recognize the device...but once again it recognizes mine which is the same phone just diff rom kernel etc....
I'll prob just try messing with it some more being i was in the middle of the woods at 2am camping when i was trying to get it to work...maybe I'll have better luck...i know the phone got soaked but it was fine till like 2 weeks after when it started losing all carrier service until it would reboot itself
And he thought I'd have problems with my custom roms...ha!
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I had the same issue with my fascinate. I discovered it was the cable.(my phone took a bath to. Last the vibrate but still runs like a champ) I ended up using my wife's kindle cable I tried like 4 til the kindle cable redeemed me from ics envy. Also, to get Odin to see your phone and trick windows 7 to install some generic "universal USB driver" you have to...
1. Launch Odin (I'm using version 3 something)
2. Connect phone to computer.
3. Power down phone.
4. 3 finger into stock recovery.
Odin should at this point see the port to his phone.
I had to do try everything til I discovered this. Also have you used mass storage or media sync with on his fascinate? Those are some drivers that the fascinate installs to get the path from phone to computer working.
Let me know if it works

I recently found that it can be more often then not the cable. The cord that came with my phone does not allow it to be recoginized by my computer but my friends cord for her LG P930 works perfectly. I have also had to reinstall the samsung usb driver a few times while changing roms.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Well somehow i got it to work...i plugged my phone in after his and the computer decided to download some drivers and all of a sudden it started recognizing his phone...now i just have find a ROM that agrees with it being i can't use ics being it only turns on if you 3 finger into recovery then connect it to a power source...then it magically turns on so you can reboot...haven't found any solution to that issue except that something in the battery connection had to short out when it got wet

[Q] I777 No longer able to mounted to PC...

My I777 has been acting up lately, and now I'm out of options and wondering what my next move should be.
For several days when I'd connect the phone to the PC via USB, it started saying "this device can perform faster when on a USB 2.0 port..." - which, my ports ARE 2.0.. transfers were taking forever. Now, anytime I plug it in it simply says "USB Device not recognized" - I've tried the OEM cable, the plethora of other cables, 4 different PC's... *ALL* have the same result.
My concern is with a custom ROM on it and no way to get any PC to recognize the phone to get it back to root - how should I proceed from here for warranty purposes? I've only had it since March - just wondering what's gonna happen at this point - or is this even fixable? All the threads I've seen say it needs replaced... but with no way to unroot, etc., I'm just unsure how this is gonna go.
Thanks for any advice.

You can always use Mobile Odin to flash back to stock since your on a custom ROM.

Absolutely NOT.
This is a situation that's been coming over a period of time, starting with the inability to see it as a USB 2.0 device when initially plugged in, and now has deteriorated to the point that it can't even be seen.

Yeah, I sure did - nothing. Even in recovery, it won't "mount" usb there either.
Samsung's have a crappy USB port. It fails sometimes. You have a hard time charging at all?
But like I stated above, even without a computer connection you can get Mobile Odin and flash back to stock, as long as your rooted.
I'm having this same issue. I just got the phone earlier this week and I am unable to get bit connected to my pc to root or Odin. I have installed and uninstalled Kies multiple times on two different computers, tries different ports, and checked if the cable worked by using another phone (PC recognized without an issue). I get the USB not recognized or the 2.0 USB message. If I enable debugging, I can connect regularly and transfer files through windows explorer. But if I use USB debugging off, then nothing will work. I've tried using odin and it will just get stuck at setup connection or cache.img and then I'd have to pull the device. I've tries updating through Kies when it shows the USB 2.0 message but once the S2 hits download mode then the computer stops recognizing it. I have also tried installing the i777 drovers on the Samsung website and its still a no go. Does anyone know how to fix this? Its not rooted so mobile Odin won't help me now.

It is the OEM cable that came with my Samsung Infuse. It worked with the T989 3 days ago and it's not working with my i777. Its strange because I tried it with my infuse again and I am able to Odin just fine. Could it really be an issue with my USB or will it be a PCB issue? I would rather or not disassemble my phone if it is a PCB issue. Should be able to do a warranty exchange though.

I hate to break it to you brother but it's damn near impossible to determine what the actual culprit could be, your best best is to try each and every single different thing I've listed. The end result being changing the PCB which one, isn't that hard, and two, is very cheap the only problem is waiting for the board to come in the mail.

Its strange because when I enable USB debugging, I can get a "USB connection" on the phone and data transfers fine. But when I turn it off, I get a "MTP connection" and sometimes it'll connect (5% of the time) and allow me to transfer data. But when lies tries to update when that mtp connection is active, it'll hang when the phone goes into download mode. Did you have this same issue?

I f you're able to transfer files via mass storage with USB debugging enabled then you can (most likely) rule out hardware failure on your phone.
If anything this sounds like a driver issue on the cpmputer. Are you running windows? If so remove and reinstall the drivers for your phone.
Still think its hardware.
I can connect 1/100 of the times I'm plugged into a computer. Its not a driver issue because my girlfriend has an i777 as well and no problems for her connecting at all.
Its not ROM related because I have this problem with all ROMs.

Does that apply to ums as well? From his description he can connect in ums just fine. Its only mtp that's giving him problems. In his case, with the problem only being in one connection mode, it leads me to think drivers. In your case, tested against another s2 I'd say hardware.
Just tried using a Motorola cable and a third PC and my chances of connection increased to about 15-20%. Kies and Odin failed on me a few times just like I had described before. But eventually Odin was able to flash okay. Finally on ICS on my i777! I think I'll stay on stock since I'd rather not go USB and PC hunting to flash stock if anything goes wrong.

I've tried multiple computers and multiple cables including 2 OE HTC cables with the odd end. I've restarted the PCs and the phone. I tried with USB de-bugging both checked and unchecked. I haven't updated any drivers but I did install HTC Sync on one of the computers. I would think that even without the proper drivers, I would at least get an error message but I get nothing.
you need to install the htc usb drivers for the phone to be recognized by your computer.. open device manager and go to usb settings.. plug your phone it to see if it registers on the device manager.. after you installed the htc usb drivers (you don't need htc sync thats for updating and backing up sense)... if anything you can try to factory reset your phone..

I installed installed a driver package that that was named "HTCDriver3.0.0.007". Nothing registers in the device manager when I plug the phone in. I'll try a factory reset tonite and see what happens.
Also, I sent a message to HTC support this morning, but I didn't get a response yet.
Thanks for the help so far. If anybody's got any more ideas or experience with this, I'd love to hear.
dose your computer make any sounds when you connect the phone to it? and where did you get those drivers from? you might want to uninstall them and install the ones that come with hasoon's AIO toolkit.. or get them directly from the htc website

That driver actually did come from hasoon. The only thing available from the HTC site was Sync and a tethering driver, which I tried both.
when you install and uninstall drivers from the computer normally your suppose to restart the computer and the device.. and dose your computer make a sound when you plug your phone in? and does the charging light on the phone come on?

if the light comes on the device is connecting to the computer.. if there's no sound the device isn't being recognized by what your plugin it into.. there could be one issue with the usb drivers on the computer and or something wrong with the usb port of the phone.. do you have another phone to connect it to the same cable.. using the same usb port on the pc to see if that phone gets recognized by the computer...? if it does then there's a problem with your phones usb port.. if it doesnt then it might be the cable or the usb port.. do the following un-install all of your usb drivers.. even the htc one.. restart your computer in safe mode with networking and then re-install the drivers and then plug in the phone to test it.. or you can boot the phone into bootloader by removing the battery from the phone then re-inserting it and power on the phone by holding volume down and power till the phone boots up.. go to fastboot and see if the phone recognizes the usb from there...
i still think the main issue here is driver related though.. maybe you have a virus on your computer messing with the drivers or firewall or antivirus or something.. but try the safemode with networking first before anything else...

No luck with safe mode. I just ordered a new OE USB cable. It's hard to believe that I have 2 bad cables, but it was cheap enough. I may try the reset also.

That driver actually did come from hasoon. The only thing available from the HTC site was Sync and a tethering driver, which I tried both.

Unfortunately to me it sounds like a messed up usb port in your phone. I have a moto defy that got water in the USB port and same problem now. It charges, but is not recognized by the computer in any way. No matter what computer, drivers installed or not, my amaze is always recognized somehow, when I plug it into a computer.

You're probably right. I would think that if it were connecting I would get some sort of message from either the phone or the PC.

If anyone cares to know, I got a response from HTC. They had me do some tests which I had already done (different cables, different ports, reset the phone), which of course didn't work. They told me to call the service center. The girl I talked to seemed reasonably knowledgeable. She told me that it's very unusual for the port to be bad in such a way that it charges but won't pass data, but that it was not impossible. She checked the serial number and told me that I was on my last day of warranty and if I shipped it that day it would be covered, assuming there is no damage due to owner misuse. So I sent it in.
Assuming they can and do fix it, I'm not sure if they will give me any details as to what was wrong, but I will let everyone know what happened. I saw a few instances online of people having the same issues as me with HTC phones but no one ever seemed to have any solutions.
i'm not shocked that htc wasn't able to help... 75% of the time the people working tech support don't know anything they always read "steps" to fix certain problems from their database... **** i learned so much about computer's from google its not even funny... i don't call tech support unless "google" cant find a solution.. lol

My Amaze has been fixed under warranty and will supposedly be here tomorrow. I doubt HTC will tell me what the problem was, or whether it was a hardware or software issue.
Thanks for all the help. You'll be hearing from me.
