which kernel to install CM 7.1? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i want to install cm7.1 on my sgs2. it's kernel is XWKF3 at the moment, so i need to flash it with GT-I9100_XWKF3_insecure with odin first but how to get to ClockworkMod Recovery after? do i need to flash another cf kernel? if so, which one?
sorry for noob questions but i never did it before

Just flash the CF kernel, the insecure kernel is to manually root it without CWM. CF root provides both root and CWM

no good idea: cm7.1 is android 2.3.7, kf3 was 2.3.4 (or 2.3.3, it's long ago )!!!
cm7.1 brings it's own kernel with it, you can just stick with that or use the one from Siyah (a custom kernel which i use at the moment, with cm7.1#84), you can find it in the dev section, search for "Siyah-v2.0beta7-CWM"

He's asking what to flash first to gain CWM, so he can later flash CM7

Flash clockworkx's cwm kernel if you want to flash cm7 using rom manager, otherwise use the cf root version which matches your rom version, then flash cm7 via cwm recovery, may need to flash the zip twice.

Only cm7 kernel or Siyah kernel are the only ones which work, and the stock cm7 kernel is good!

DON'T use the CWM installed by cf root kernel to flash CM7. The CWM that comes with cf root is a modified version of CWM that isn't compatible with CM7 or ROM manager.
For this reason, if you want to flash CM7, just root your phone however you want and then flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693 . This kernel will install a compatible unmodified version of CM7 so you can flash CM7 with no problems.

[Q] ClockworkMod and CyanogenMod

I just got my ATT Galaxy S2 rooted with Method 1 (Flash flashing codeworkx CWM then Super One Click). Before I try to flash CyanogenMod. I'd like to have noob questions.
I'm told that CyanogenMod comes with it's own Kernel, does that mean the flashed codeworkx CWM kernel will be replaced with CM kernel after flashing CM? If so, do I still have ClockworkMod? Does CM kernel also comes with CWM? How could get ClockworkMod to upgrade new CM if I lose CWM?
you will still have cwm recovery once you flash cm7, it may be a slightly different version, but you will still have it.

I've never heard of a CM7 kernel for a Samsung device that didn't have CWM working.
In general, it's VERY rare for a custom kernel not to have CWM. CWM is usually one of the first orders of business for kernel developers on a new device.

My CMW Recovery was intact after the flash.

[Q] help with selecting CF Root

hey sorry for the noobish question...i need to know which CF root to use with my SII..
rom:V3RTR3MA V4.0
baseband:XXKI3
androi:2.3.6
as you are on a custom rom it should be rooted already, no need for rooting it again
This rom have PDA:XWKK5 then use CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXA_KK5-v5.0-CWM5.zip; but this rom have CWM 5.0 no?
its rooted but CWM shows that it needs cf root for additional options....can i use what umarian said..but he sounds like he's not sure abt it...
What rom are you using what kernel are you using .
jje
If you are on a XWKK5 then use the corresponding XWKK5 Kernel. If you flash the wrong CF-Root Kernel then your phone isn't going to explode in a puff of phosphorous gas and suffocate you and your family to death though. It will probably just be laggy and noticeably slower. If that happens you've flashed the wrong Kernel, so just flash a different one. But yea, what I said first, use the corresponding Kernel to the build of your rom. (KI3 use the KI3 Kernel etc.)
Chainfires CWM app will say that if your not using one of his cfroot kernels so don't worry.
the app may still work with the kernel you are using.
What options do you want that aren't there?
You can probably still boot into recovery from the app anyway.

well i flashed with KK5 CF root and everything is ok...but for some reason my app drawer isn't transparent anymore...
@postfatal :thanks for the LOL..

[Q] About flashing Siyah kernel

Just one short question so I dont do something stupid: do I need to do some kind of procedure or anything before I flash Siyah 3.0.1.? The phone has ALL stock software and settings and hasn't been tampered like this in any way as its only several days old.
Thanks in advance.
bad move. 3.0.1 is for ics rom. You are likely to be on gingerbread.

If you have not installed CWM, you can just install it via Odin. Also make sure that you actually have ICS (android 4.XX) installed on your phone or it wont work.
Just to confirm, you have the i9100? Not the US T-mobile version of SGS2?

Yeah I'm on Gingerbread, all stock. Should I flash 3.0 instead?
And I still dont know is there something to do, some kind of procedure or something before the flashing.
Here it says it already needs to be rooted before the flash...

do not install that siyah 3 kernel if you are still on gingerbread. You have 2 options. Install siyah 2.6.14 for gingerbread, or upgrade your current rom to ICS and then install siyah 3.
So, for example I could go with Speedmod or CfRoot, flash some Ics rom(Miui for example) and then flash Siyah?
If you want to stay on gingerbread and use siyah, use siyah 2.6.14 or lower. If you want to go to ICS, use siyah 3.0 or higher. It's that simple. 2.6.x only works on gingerbread, and 3.x only works on ICS.
just flash recovery

If its brand new and stock, first root (zergrush method), flash CF-Root using odin, get ClockWorkMod (using rom manager from market).
After that you can go ahead and flash any ICS rom but first backup everything.
So backup contacts (I just go to contacts and from menu use export to SD card), sms (using any sms backup app from market), all the apps you would like to save for later use with Titanium Backup (free addition is fine).
Also do a back for your stock rom in recovery (I suppose you can do that even before rooting - but I did it after I rooted and got CF-Root kernel).
Hope it helps.
Thanks a lot!
But doesnt Cf Root already come with CWM?
And is this the right method?

Easy way to root is with odin. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
That guy is great, but what's creating a confusion about Siyah is FAQ on his page:
Q: Does this kernel work on XXXXXX-ROM?
A: If the ROM is based on Samsung Stock ICS Rom LPQ or newer, it should. Otherwise, search the thread... If you cannot find any reference to that ROM, try the kernel. You won't lose anything by trying this kernel. Worst case scenario is to reflash your previous kernel or ROM. You can backup your previous kernel with Hellcat's k-tool from the market.
So, I tried with 3.0 on my GB 2.3.4., and it didn't work, so I had to flash old kernel.
The reason I want to use Siyah is dual-boot, which it should provide.
Another problem is that ICS comes very slowly.
Siyah V3 doesn't work with Gingerbread roms. It's an ICS kernel. Try Siyah 2.6.14, that's the GB version (look for the thread in the dev section).
I'm still so confused about all of this and can't decide what to do. In addition, there is no cf-root for my kernel(BOKK1).
From the CFRoot thread "What if there is no matching download ? Try finding the closest match." & "The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important" (in your case the BO).

Siyah Kernel up to 3.01 (which is for ICS as you are already told) up to now does not support dual boot! Its only a placeholder till now in CWM. It may support dual boot in future but not now.

[Q] [ROOT] With other kernel? [/ROOT]

Code:
On ICS (Android v4.0.4) , You can root by flashing SuperICS Kernel or LP7 kernel from Codeworkx
Taken from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677819&highlight=how+to+root
Now i was wondering im gonna install SiyahKernel + Resurrection Remix ics v2.3
Is it possible to flash these 2 without having to flash SuperICS or LP7 and still get root access? cause i wan't my phone as clean as possible? also this would give me a little better understanding of kernels and Roms.
Thanks Alot!!
It will need to be rooted in order to have ClockworkMod recovery in order to flash RR 2.3 as it only comes in a .zip file. Siyah kernel could be flashed via Odin, but if you have recovery you may as well flash it via recovery. You can easily unroot your phone by flashing a stock ROM from sammobile.com, and via Odin.
Chris.

And i'm asking for specific parameters like android ver 2.3.5 with speedrom . I can't find any posts that match like that one.

Just flash CM9 in CWM. It will also install CM9 ICS kernel so you're good to go. Maybe you'll need to flash another modem in case your GB modem doesnt work with ICS.
After that, I would recommend to flash Siyah kernel, but its up to you.
P.S. DO NOT EVER USE ROM MANAGER (it comes with CM9)
