[Q] Restore Heytell contacts after flashing a ROM - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to restore the contacts you have in HeyTell after flashing a rom ?
I flash a lot of roms but i have to add my friends everytime i do and its annoying for them, which is understandable.. So can i add them without having to send them a text message ?

Would it be possible if i used Titanium Backup ? Never tried that program ..

No one knows if this is possible ?

Restoring HeyTell contacts using Google Sync
Does your ROM have a Privacy option? Typically found via Menu > Settings > Privacy? (If not, try a Search from Settings, or open Voice Dialer and say "Privacy Settings"--these options are typically included in Android 2.2 or higher, but may be hidden depending on the distribution.)
If so, enable all backup options there and make sure that everyone in HeyTell is added as a friend (green circle with check mark - tap the check mark button and tap Friend to add them). This will store your underlying account information with your Gmail account. After you flash the phone and sign into Gmail, then install HeyTell, your friends should show up--they'll be accessible in the Friends list you see when you tap inside the To: field.
One caveat is that Google sync doesn't appear to work if you've set your primary account up with a @googlemail.com domain - but this should work if you're using the standard gmail.com domain as primary.

Moving phone contacts to google contacts

I'm I'm a new G2/Hero user, great forum here.
I really like the fact google contacts sync up with the phone & are phone independent, is there any way of making your normal contacts become google ones or an app to do it?
many thanks
If you set your phone up with a Google account then by default all your contacts will be synced with Google. Most mobile phones offer a facility to export the address book, often via MS Outlook which can then be further exported to Google and from there propagate to your phone.
I set it up with a google login first time I used it. The google contacts sync up fine but the rest of the contacts listed as 'phone' dont sync to google.
So what I was hoping is I can change the type from phone to google in the contacts listing then edit them on my computer & sync them back to the phone?
One other question does the google sync work both directions? Facebook images don't seem to appear in gmail?
Yes and yes. Make sure that the contacts are set as 'Google' and it should all work
Unfortunately after setting up some "Phone" contacts you cannot edit them and save as "Google" - or am I missing something?
And BTW, I'd like to ask people who are actually syncing their contacts and using Google Contacts as their primary source whether they suffer from the fact that Gmail adds all the email addresses that they had a conversation with as a new contact. Is that actually an issue?

that's exactly what I'm trying to do with no luck. New contacts I will set to google but I imported a load from my sim (150) which are all set to 'phone'
Another problem I had with the calendars, if you set them to only be google it doesn't change the new entry type from 'phone' so I put load of appointments in & couldn't see them which totally threw me. Luckily it does remember the type you set but it should change the default type when you set the view!
no, you cant change the contact type once it has been set. you'll need to delete them and create/import them as google contacts.
when in people and you press menu import, select google to import to the google list. that way they sync up automatically.
If you can't be bothered deleting all the ones in phone, just hide them...on the people list, press menu and select view, only tick google and voila, all the others are hidden.
to stop google from synching all the email addresses as well, go into people, go to the groups tab, press menu and select sync groups.
tick only 'My contacts'
problem solved.
thanks for the reply rhedgehog

I can only select "Sync all contacts" and a couple of groups I created - no option for "My contacts".
strange, i get it, and it should be there as it is a standard google contacts group....
There is an app on the market called ContactSync can help you with this. It's free.
tsekh501>> Worked like a charm, cheers mate
I wonder if anyone can help me. My contacts were stored as 14 on Google and 76 on 'phone'. I used the contactsync app and it said all contacts successfully synced to google. On my contacts list they all have 'Google' next to them.
The problem is, when i log into my google account on my pc I only have 14 contacts listed? Am i missing something here or is there something wrong?
PS - just to add, when i go to menu- settings - data sync - google - sync settings on my Hero, when i tick/untick contacts to try and force it to update i get a 'Sorry The process android.process.acore has stopped......Force close.
Bump! Anyone?
Getting the same problem... Running MCR 2.0...
Odd one this, and I only get the error message when I set the phone to sync my contacts.
Anyone wanna bid in on this one?
Bad idea?

Tried this advice, and even threw in a reboot after running the ContactSync app. Got the same error-message. Has anyone completed this successfully?
I've been having the same problems- first the change only showing on the hero- and now the random crashes?
I since backed up my contacts to sd with exportcontacts (free on the market) as .csv and then uploaded them to my gmail via my pc.
Strangely, when I did, both copies of the contacts showed up online and I had to manually delete the second copy of each. I know it was both copies as i'd sorted them all into groups after using contact sync and the groups showed only on one of each contact.
Slight feature missing with the new Modaco rom. Did anybody use the feature where you could sync only certain groups in your contacts? This feature was present in the old firmware but is now missing.
Before you could go to People > Groups > Menu > Sync groups and the select the groups you only wanted to sync. This is not present with the new version. Also I can't seperate Google contacts as well. Annoying change for those who sync their contacts with Google.

Similar experience. However, I experienced an additional difficulty when importing the .csv file to gmail. When it imported the fields was all messed up. I tried to edit it in excel, but didn't get it to work. Quite a hassle, this. Wish they could have streamlined it just a tad more
So far with the 2.1 roms I have tried to sync my contacts that are not part of google contacts without success.
There seems to be no way of getting the option to make a contact a google contact if it is not already so.
I tried the ap loaded kindly on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5879272&postcount=6763 - which call contactsync (as above post)
but it doesn't work - saying something about the database being wrong.
Is this something that the chef's can make available in their roms (a hidden menu - or a menu option that could be put into contacts/people app) ? I think it's something HTC just overlooked when they created the app.

how to change all contacts to "phone" type?

Hi!
I would like to know if it is possible to have *only* "phone" and "SIM" contact types and prevent them being synced to google account.
Thanks, Nikos

Its possible to show only phone and sim contacts on phone if thats what you mean?
well, you can go to Settings - Data Syncronization - Google - untick Contacts
also in People press Menu - View and choose which you like shown in People app, and which to ignore, so even if you did sync Google contacts, you can still pretend they are not there
Thank you for your replies. But what I really mean is _not_ to sync to Google contacts. I want to keep everything local and disable, if possible, Google syncing completely.
Isn't there any advanced address book which would manage all contacts exclusively on the phone?
So far I haven't found any.
Thanks again, Nikos
well, you disable Google sync like i told you, Settings - Data Syncing - Google, there are the options to turn things off or on
if your contacts are already saved as Google and not Phone, i'm not sure you can change that, only restore them from Outlook or sim i guess :/

Sorry for not replying to what you have written initially. I think what you describe is not an option. When you enter (at least in HTC Hero) Settings > Data Synchronization you have the options:
- Background data ( which is required if you want to install market apps)
- Auto-Sync (which I have disabled)
- Google mail (which is a "button" to execute syncing, IIUC)
- Calendar (same as above)
- Contacs (same as above)
So, I don't see where one can "untick" the Contacs and prevent them from being synced!?
Regards, Nikos
Brilliant man, I was wondering how to stop Google Contacts from appearing!
Also,
all of the above discussion does not reply my first question: is it possible to turn contatcs (from any type, e.g. SIM or Google) to "phone" type contacts?
Contact Types Displayed
Yes there is,
1. Open people
2. Press Menu
3. Select View
There are 3 options to choose from
Google
Phone
Sim
Leave the ones ticked you want displayed
Aother option of duplicated conatcts is at the bottom
Thanks for your reply seanyowl. But I don't have a problem choosing between types that are to be displayed. The "problem" is how one would perform a contact type cast? As the threads title states (maybe not so clear after all): how to change (=convert) to "phone" type.
Regards, Nikos
you cant.
and the reason you don't see the tick boxes in the google sync settings is because you have already turned autosync off.

Thanks for the (final) answer to the initial question.
There IS a way to convert "Phone" or "Google" contacts into "SIM" contacts but it is a tedious one:
People > Menu > View > Choose which contacts to show > OK > Click every contact you want to save as SIM (choose the one you want) > Menu > More > Save to SIM
Or you can install "Contact to SIM" from the Market. With "Contacts to SIM" you export EVERY contact to the SIM card. But there is a bug when doing it this way though. It seems that when using C2S the change doesn't appear immediatly in People. That means that if you use C2S you will not see the SIM card get populated in People. You have to reboot the phone for People to see the change. I think People ONLY reads its own change to the SIM card and nothing else.
Remember that when exporting your contacts back to the SIM card you will loose every extra information but the telephone number and the name. And most SIM cards have a limit of 250 contacts.

Unfortunatly there doesn't seem to be any way to change the contact type once entered...
But atleast you know how to export the contacts back to the SIM card...

Yeah, it seems no one understands the question. I want to be able to do the same thing: Keep all of my personal data OFF of Google (and away from the NSA and everyone else) and ONLY sync with my PC at home. I already have some calendar and contact info synced with Google, but I want to be able to "reclassify" all current Google contacts and calendars to be "Device" so nothing is synced with Google. Not sure why this question is so hard to understand...

[Q]Can you change Gmail primary account without hard reset?

I think the title says it all.Btw,my phone isn't rooted.
even with root access I'm not aware of any way to do this without essentially factory resetting.
A quick google of "how to change primary google account on android" led to a few suggestions of wiping the data for all the google apps on the phone, but that would wipe all apps/emails/contacts with gmail/ etc. and many people are saying that it just factory resets after that anyway.
Isn't it just doing:-
1) Settings
2) Accounts and sync
3) Click on existing Google account under "Manage accounts"
4) Click "Remove Account" button
5) Add the new one you'd rather use.
I've not done this myself as I have the one on my phone that I use but it seems like the right place. Are there issues if this route is used?
that seems the best and fastest way but it wipes all your data.I saw another method of changing the primary email but it involves a so-called ,,google apps'' app found in manage applications and selecting ,,clear data'' but so far i couldn't find it and i believe this issue is general to all gingerbread phones
It worked for me
nice CarpathianUK I never even knew you could do that...

??? What do you mean? It doesn't wipe ALL of your data. It wipes your contact/calendar info... because that stuff is tied to your google account. It doesn't wipe your installed apps. CarpathianUK's suggestion does exactly what you are asking about.
If you want to keep your contact info, you'll have to either copy them to your SIM card (they may be there already), or re-enter them in your contact list of the google account you want to use as your primary. I think for calendar info, you have to export your google calendar from the account you're using now, and import it to the account you want to use.
As far as the "so-called google apps" app - that isn't an app that shows up in "manage applications", per se. The Google apps is .apk that installs the market and other proprietary Google apps, like the gmail app. It exists because some ROMs (like CyanogenMod) cannot legally distribute the Google apps as part of their ROM, so they must link to the .apk externally to allow users to install them.
How to change primary account in android without resetting
Worked for android 4.2.2
1. Go to settings > Applications
2. Delete all data for Gmail.
3. Force stop Gmail.
4. Got settings > accounts
5. Uncheck all Sync options
6. Remove that account!
7. Sign in to google with new account.
You're done!

[Q] Issues with lost contacts!

Hi all,
Recently I have noticed contacts disappearing. Numbers I knew I had stored but now were gone.
I have looked at gmail where they were sycned to, and they are not there either.
I have turned phone off, removed battery, and turned it back on again.
I have used the contacts/settings and tried every combination.
None of these have done anything.
HOWEVER, what really gets me is for example I had a contact called "LloydsTSB Offshore". This vanished. I put a new contact in with the same number called "LloydsTSB". When I call this number using "LloydsTSB" when the dial screen comes up the name on it is "LloydsTSB Offshore", e.g. the name of the contact which has vanished. So surely that means the old contact is still there somewhere else how can the name still come up like that?
Can anyone help, this is driving me mad!
1) Which ROM you are using, Stock or Custom?
2) Have you checked your Contact Display Options?
3) It might happen that you save your contacts to google and displaying only phone contacts. Pls verify and let me know, so i can suggest further solutions.

Hi, thanks for the reply!
1. I am using a custom ROM: XXKI3 (from this site)
2. I am not sure what you mean here: I have tried to have it displaying everything, and variations within that, but nothing works
3. I do save contacts to google, but i have checked google and the 'missing' contacts are not there either
Ok..Try following things now:
1) Go to Contacts ->Menu->Display Options and Uncheck "Only contacts with phone numbers Checkbox"
2) Then next move to Select Contacts to display and Click on dropdowns for phone, check all the options, move to google and check all the categories there. It might happen that you have missed some category. Also check that Background data and account sync is on for your google account(You can check that in Setting -> Accounts and Sync)
3) Also check your contacts on google dashboard, if they are not displayed there then there might have been problem in uploading contacts.

HI,
Ok done all this.for 1 and 2 it was already ok
For 3, the contacts are there, but not the missing ones.
Google have some kind of undo when it comes to deleted contacs.
If all your contacts accidently was deleted, you maybe could restore from within Google
I accidentally deleted contacts, is there an 'undo' button for G-Mail?

Well the thing is I haven't deleted anything, as far as I know, it just seems like they were there and now they are not
Since when i dial one of the 'lost' contacts the name of it still appears i think they are there somewhere

OK
Did you change your SIM card? If ... then some of your contacts might be located on your old SIM card.
Another clue: your source to contacts might not be Google? Part of your contact list content might comes from Facebook or other social communities.
Contact from Facebook (and elsewhere) will no be synchronized with your Google contacts unless you merge contacts.

[Q] SlimBean - unable to use SIM contacts

I'm using the latest SlimBean. I want to see SIM contacts only, but I can't. I don't want to synchronize new ones with my goddamn Google account, either. I only made an account for Google Play and nothing else.
Unfortunately SB doesn't seem to have an option to use SIM memory exclusively - when I go to Phone -> Contacts -> Settings, I can't choose it. The phone doesn't even see them unless I copy them to the phone's memory to begin with.
Also when I try to add a new contact, I see a window that says "Your new contact will be synchronized with [gmail account name here]". I don't want to click "OK" because I don't want to send any more data to Google than necessary.
Is there anything I can do about that?
