[Q] [HELP] - I Cannot Update, SBF, or anything. - Motorola Photon 4G

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a rooted user, and when I turn on the phone I get delays. I have to wait 30 minutes before I can use the phone. I cannot type in a keyboard. I cannot do anything including making a call. This also happens every couple of hours.
I cannot sbf my phone. There is something wrong with it.
I cannot update the phone.
Here's what I have done:
- Tried to CWM backup, sbf, update, root, install cwm and restore backup
- Clear cache.
- tried different sbf
- tried updating rsd lite
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far, I have the following suggestions that may work:
- FACTORY RESET THROUGH CWM. - FAILED
- FLASHING MR3 SBF - FAILED
- FLASHING 154_5 - FAILED
EDIT: SHABBYPENGUIN IS HELPING ME GET IN CONTACT WITH A DEV WHO CAN HELP ME.

Back up your apps on Titanium...then wipe data/factory reset go through rooting and installing cwm after you run through all the updates.

A factory reset does not allow me to update on my phone. This phone is unusable!!! I cannot stand this anymore!

"CWM backup, sbf, update, root, install cwm and restore backup"
why would you update to only then restore pre update?
factory reset is very misleading, it only applies to a user that never rooted or messed with their system. all it does is wipe cache/data/and dalvik. the reason why you cant update is one because you have cwm, 2 because im banking on you have missing /system/app stuff. which then fails the md5 hash check of the update.zip. i dont know what kind of issues your having or running into with sbf. but that is the only way to get back to stock.

So basically i'm s*rewed?

interesting, I have used sbf_flash 5 times today - given my nand a good work out - and have yet to have a single fail...well one fail cause I didn't Su, but that was my fault. :-/
Any ways - have you tried a different USB Port and a different Cable?
I am assuming you are on windows? - could be a bad assumption but proably not.
Did you install the latest drivers?
Have the latest RSD?
Tried another copy of the SBF file? - I had one that didn't quite work right in a droid x once, bad download.
Just trying to get a solution for you.

Wow, are you serious? Hmm..I'm not sure what the problem might be. Seriously, you need to start from scratch somehow...so there are 2 ways you can wipe data/reset:
1) Through CWM Recovery
2) Through Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset
Try either way first. When you tried to reset, what happened? Can you provide some details as to the Settings>About Phone? Anything for us to go on to help?
Let me know how it works out for you!
Good luck!

Stuck in bootloop after trying to flash eclipse 0.3

I couldnt post this there, so im posting it here
I've flashed 2 other versions of this rom successfully in the past. The only difference is this time is factory reset it first. Then attempted to flash the rom. the Rom gave me an error, and thats when the bootlooping started.
I tried factory resetting, deleting cache, leaving battery out for 30 seconds.
Im stuck at the Moto screen
SO, what do i do? is there any pertinent information im leaving out?
Your going to want to flash the sbf, full instructions are in a thread in the development section, don't have access to the link at the moment I'm mobile, sorry mate.

ok.
Is there any way to make sure this doesnt happen again? This is such a process
You could also try plugging the phone into a wall when its off to see if you can get into BSR and either restore a backup or try to flash again.

It IS a bit of a process to go thorough. Part of the price to pay if you're gonna modify, I guess. If the suggestion above about trying the BSR program (Bootstrap Recovery program, also called "System Recovery" in app drawer) doesn't work for you, then SBF to stock, which should get you back live, then flash P3 rooted Gingerbread, then Eclipse. That will work. All the links with instructions and downloads have been graciously provided here by our Moderator, The Clown.
As you already know, Eclipse has loaded fairly easily in the past, and wiping data is the recommended procedure. While not absolutly necessary, it has helped others resolve problems they had after loading Eclipse in the past, so I wouldn't be afraid to do it. It's hard for anyone to say for sure why this happened to you this time. The process is a bit touchy, reqireing you to follow the instructions exactly - including, for example, plugging in the phone to a wall charger while using the System Recovery program. Perhaps you inadvertently left out some step along the way.
I dont THINK i did, but hey, i wouldnt doubt it.
Anywho, just for an update, im now pre-rooted GB, waiting for nitro to update the eclipse rom.
Problem is now, i dont have 3g. i tried *228 multiple times

i want the update.zip to sit on my internal storage incase i screw up my fone too hard and need a quick way back
Well, if you screw up your phone that bad you probably won't be able to get into recovery, so you'd have to sbf from your computer. There is no update.zip, its an sbf file.

There is no .zip for the legit 2.3.4, you HAVE to perform the sbf.
thank you for the comfirmation, i thought my google fu was strong. i guess that somethings that has to be leaked?
I could ul mine when I get home. How do I do it? Which web hoster? I have never posted a large file.
I think you can get P3droids zip, right? Or is that 2.3.3?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
even if we do have a 2.3.4 zip, doesnt the sbf still have to be done to update the kernel? other wise your just installing a 2.3.4 rom on top of 2.3.3 kernel. I could also be wrong about that.
When you UD-ota you are on 233. All the new stuff is in the update.zip that can be flashed from stock recovery.

I believe this is correct
I remember seeing in stock recovery an option for install update.zip
Idont know if this will work the same way as an sbf would, if u happen to mess something up and.need to get back. Could be worth a shot but it might also be dangerous so proceed with caution. Has anyone ever tried to do that instead of sbfing before?
Now im just curious, why is the the update 6 times smaller than the sbf. just a question, thank you for the zip, might be usefull, i was switching roms earlier and got stuck in boot up, but could acsess stock recovery, alas by then it was too late for me t find and put the zip internal. got a back up plan now!!!
I am probably wrong but I would think that its because the update.zip doesn't have the system partition and files like the sbf does. This is why I don't think it will work the same way.
FYI next time you are in a bootloop try just pulling battery and put it back in. Then plug ur phone into the wall. This brings u to the bootstrap and u can restore a nandroid or try a data wipe from there or cache/dalvik wipe. Then again I believe if a wipe was done prior to that it would have wiped recovery app settings being installed. But u may get lucky and still be able to get into it.
I have restored nandroid many times when stuck in bootloop by doing this.

[Q] Deleted bloatware, can't OTA - Can't find good solution.

I know I'm not the first noob with this problem, but I just can not find a practical solution anywhere. I haven't done much rooting since the original Droid (pre bloatware days). I rooted and uninstalled all bloatware on my Droid Razr. I did this when the phone first came out and there wasn't much documentation telling me not to do that. Irregardless, I cannot OTA now of course.
I can't find a default SBF that would just factory reset my phone, and I can't find a list of all the default applications that are on the Razr to reinstall them (if that would even work). Every post I came across was mid-December so I'm hoping there have been some break throughs since then that would provide an easy fix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
There's no SBF but there's Fastboot ZIP files which are just as good.

That worked great, updated OTA and it was successful. The Fastboot using RSD doesn't reinstall the bloatware apps though. Any idea how the OTA works without the apps being there?
It definitely does restore them..
Sorry for my ignorance. It did restore the applications like you said. It did not revert all of my settings, and I must have had them hidden prior to rooting my phone originally.
Thanks again for the help!

The noob is back and totally confused and needs help...

So I asked the other day about which rom would be best for a noob like me, in this thread to be exact: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483712 and although most said Eclipse, I had a few people saying CM7 since it is based off of 2.3.4 and I would not have to SBF to try it and so on... So that sounded good to me and I made up my mind to try out CM7 and start out the easiest way possible, heh. So I got started and was following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21342515 downloaded all the files and what not and sat on them for a day before trying anything... cause I was sure I would screw something up... and I feel like I have...
So heres what I did. I read number 1 was NANDROID BACKUP! So I go to this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083 which says to perform a backup I must be rooted. Now this conflicted with the original thread I had read, but I went ahead and rooted it anyways. Followed the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315711 and everything went fine. I rooted my phone. But I was already worried because I am not sure if I was supposed to do some kind of back up before rooting... but its a little late for that now.
So now that I am rooted I go back to the original CM7 thread and go ahead and perform the backup which goes fine. Now, at this point I assume I move on to number 5 on that list, because I shouldnt have to root again, correct?
So number 5 states: 5. Put both the Google Apps zip, the CM7 zip, and dragonzkiller's patched BSR apk on your EXTERNAL sd card. I go and get my files and put them on the External SD card (or so I thought). I then move to number 6 that says go into Bootstrap recovery, which I do fine, then move on to the next one that says Install CM7.zip but I cant find it. I see google apps and tethering but nothing about just CM7.zip. Go back to later in the post under downloads and make sure I have everything that is there. I made sure all of this is on my EXTERNAL SD card:
Patched BSR APK for ALL versions of CM7DX2
Google Apps (market, maps, YouTube, etc.) MD5 Sum: e4313eb28b65758bff0cf63bc1a404f5
Tethering Patch for CM7DX2-beta1
REFLASH THE GAPPS AFTER UPGRADING IN CASE OF FACTORY RESTORE
Cyanogenmod 7 for the Motorola Droid X2 - BETA MD5 Sum: 789f25244e475901048e0d0e5908b5a4
I try to click the Patched BSR file, but it doesnt install anything, so I go to install the google apps and tethering assuming CM7 is in there some where... reboot and get stuck in a boot loop. Yeah, I am surprised too I am learning what all these terms mean, lol.
So I didn't know what to do, so I ripped off my Otterbox case and pulled the battery and went back and found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083 and I performed a restore and got my phone to boot back up.
So this is where I am now. I really don't know where to go from here. Am I still rooted? Did I screw up by rooting first? The instructions were really confusing for a noob and I tried to make sure I knew what I was doing before I started and I still managed to screw it up. I am not really worried that I screwed up the phone... seems to be working fine as is, and if I am stuck I guess I can just leave it like this till November when I upgrade... But I would really like to get some help and see if anyone out there could hold my hand and get me thru this and let me know where I went wrong. I am up for continuing... but I need to be clear before I do anything else. I know this is a lot to ask, but if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it... Thanks so much for your time if you made it this my rambling...
Well first of all do you have Superuser in your app tray?

You did a data wipe in android recovery! If so you need to reroot
Then install our bootstrap recovery,
You already have the files on your card so find them in file manager, boot into bsr, flash cm7, while still in bsr flash gapps. Data/cache/dalvi= wipe
Reboot will take you into cm7, install the patched bsr. Apk inside some file managet program.... Enjoy
from my X2 roaming the north
I wasnt clear on if you got the CM7.zip file cleared up and got it to show up in recovery. That needs to be flashed first. The bootstrap.apk isnt installed in recovery. You install that after you get CM7 up and running. Just go to any file manager and click it. It should ask if you want to install it. The process should be, from stock android:
1. Root your phone
2. Install regular bootstrap (not CM7 bootstrap) EDIT: Actually I think this installs when you root. I dont remember, its been so long. lol. If not, find it and install it.
3. put zip files on your sd card
4. In Booststrap recovery, wipe data, clear cache and under "advanced", clear dalvik cache.
5. Flash CM7 zip FIRST, THEN google apps zip (Probably the tether patch here too, but I never did it so dont take my word on that.)
6. Reboot (CM7 SHOULD boot up)
7. Install the CM7 Bootstrap for future flashing.
You should be good after that.
Just to make things clear, the name of the CM7.zip is this:
update-cm-7.2.0-RC0-daytona-KANG-public-beta1.zip
So, when they say to install the CM7.zip file, that is the file you want to look for.
Here are the files you should have for CM7 and the order they need to be flashed in:
update-cm-7.2.0-RC0-daytona-KANG-public-beta1.zip (Again, this is the mentioned "CM7.zip" file)
gapps-cm7dx2-signed.zip (This is the Google Apps zip)
CM7DX2-beta-tether-patch-signed2.zip (This is the tether patch)
Once you are in CM7, that is when you want to install the MOTODX2_Bootstrap-CM7_signed.apk BSR.

I thought you were supposed to wipe data and cache and all that before flashing. Doesnt wiping it after flashing wipe the stuff you just flashed? Or does it not really matter? I always clear data/cache BEFORE flashing anything.

Your restore has root. Since you used root to install the recovery, your backup includes the necessary files. Sometimes instructions can be confusing or worded oddly. Once you get the hang of it, it will be easier. First thing you should do is enter our recovery and format data, cache, and dalvic (in the advanced section), then flash your cm7 zip. After, flash gapps and tether patch. I like to put my zips in their own folder so I can find them easily.

Wiping only removes user apps. You can flash cm7 then wipe all day and you will still have cm7 that's why sbf's are necessary.

Sounds like you used the patched bsr to try and flash cm7. That should be installed after cm7 is running on your phone. Should have used the unpatched bsr first.

SBFing will remove the root because it returns your phone back to stock. It's a complete wipe of ANY changes you've made to the phone.
If you want to ensure that you remove any traces of rooting, flashing, modifications, SBFing will do that.

If you clear cache and dalvik cache you won't lose any data or settings. If that doesn't work then do the factory reset in TWRP (safestrap) . That will make it as if you had a new phone. ( except the Safestrap and root access I believe). You will have to re download apps and change settings back to your liking, but it's better than having to odin back to stock.

safestrap failed wiping the regular cache, but dalvik worked. got to the lockcsreen again and it even gave me a vibrate for my pattern but then it shut off again. right after the verizon boot animation theres a popup window that says "Android is upgrading" with "optimizing app XXX of XXX". ive seen this before, but only very occasionally. what exactly does this mean?
By the way thank you guys for helping, especially on new years

I believe that is the normal process for dalvik to rebuild itself
"Android is upgrading" can come from wiping Dalvik cache, which is temporary info about your apps, that would need to be re mapped to the Android os. It can also come from doing a dirty flash or ota.
Your beginning post was about your data though, If you can get into safe strap then you should be able to mount your device to your pc, copy over what data you need, then wipe or Odin flash to bring it all back.

Smart, didnt know TWRP can do that. couldnt i just use the factory wipe feature in safestrap?
You could use factory wipe but your data at that point would be gone. If your not worried about the data then sure.
If data truly is not a concern though Just download the Odin tar for what build you want and start new.
To answer your other question think of Odin as a recovery disc you would use on your computer. Destructive restore. There are some good posts about here in xda or search Google for Samsung s4 Odin and I know your find some good reads.
Good luck

would it just be easier to do the safestrap wipe instead of an Odin one? ive read up on Odin and it seems a lot more complicated than just using safestrap
ive decided that data isnt important because most everything is saved in google play and plus. so what is the most reliable way to get my phone working again? Safestrap reset?

Safestrap would be easier. I would give that a try, because if it doesn't work your only other option would be Odin.

Glad you got it sorted out! Now make a backup after you get it set back up to make it easier if it happens again
