How many people actually had the g1? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How many people had the g1, and what's been your story since? I remember getting a hold of cupcake a little early and being amazed by the onscreen keyboard. Eventually, after a brick and repair, I went to the mytouch slide (after about a year and a half, maybe 2? with the g1.) The hardware seemed super quick at the time. However, rooting it was a pain in the Ass and as a result, development was dead! After like a year with cm7/sense I found a vibrant for 160$ on craigslist and I've been loving it since. I might think about getting the g2x, but as of right now I'm happy with bi-winning.

I was a G1 owner. It was great in it's day, but always felt like HTC underestimated the power needed to run Android. Biggest hassle was that the keyboard backlights on the Bronze model actually made it hard to read the text on the keys during the daylight. "Upgraded" to a MyTouch 3g, which wasn't any kind of upgrade at all. Then got the Vibrant, and haven't looked back.

I had a G1 early on and at the time the market was non-existent and apps were sparse. I liked the concept of it but the phone was unevenly weighted and the keyboard flipping out always felt like it was going to break. It wouldn't connect to Exchange so I sold it. I got a My Touch 3G Fender and eventually the Vibrant.
I totally agree @lotherius about the power and the keyboard. Fortunately, the sales rep pointed out that the bronze phone keyboard was almost impossible to see at times and we bought the other one. The MT3G wasn't a powerhouse either. It ran Cyanogen ok but the stock OS was lagging.

I had one about two months after they were released (played around with my mom's the first couple months of release then got mine). I used that until August 2010 and got a vibrant. I didn't root my g1 until after I got my vibrant cause I was scared of bricking, just ran official updates up to 1.6, once I rooted that I checked into rooting the vibrant and when I realized how much easier it was I did that and have been side. My wife took over my g1 and I took it back to stock for her. About a week ago I got her a MT3G slide, and she's loving that one now. I'm still using my vibrant and might even continue to until my contract is up next August. I even have my g1 back and get to play with it again.

I rocked the G1. Pained me to sell it.

Obviously, my nick name says that I am a G1 owner.
I had the G1 as a valentine gift on Feb 14th, 2009. My ex gave it to me before she left the US to go back to her hometown in Melbourne, Australia (heart break/sad). I used it and loved it until the Nexus one came out on Jan 05, 2010. I got the Nexus one for $500 without contract and used it for several month until the Vibrant came out on July 15, 2010. I sold my G1 on for $200 and the Nexus one for $500 on craigslist. I then enter a 2-year contract with T-mobile and got the Vibrant for $150 on wirefly.com. Since then, I have also tried the Nexus S and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" without contract, but re-sale them after a few months.
I liked the G1 a lot, but it was so primitive at that time. I did root and unlock it to use CM ROM. When the Nexus One came out with many improvements, I move up without hesitance. For the Vibrant, like many of you, I hate it for the GPS did not work well, and the issue of updating to Gingerbread. However, I am so please with what I have right now. It's a good phone, though. I think you must know how to use the best out of it, for your own good. A smart phone in a dumb hand is still a dump phone. I am planning to move up to the SGS II next month when I save enough money to buy it without contract. Just share some thought

I got one like 3 months after it was released for Christmas.
It was my second phone following the BB Pearl. It was amazing! The new OS astounded me, everything was amazing!
As soon as a Hero Port was released I flashed and was almost crying LOL.
Then CM3 was released and that was awesome as it was really fast!

I didn't have it, but I had something horrible the Motorola Cliq...then got the Mytouch Slide and go bumped up to the Vibrant. I'm in love with the phone. I really want a new phone like the Nexus One or something.

[Q] Replacement after 3rd crappy Vibrant

Just looking for some first hand experience, or tips from a T-Mobile employee. I was just told by TMo that if this Vibrant fails me (being my 3rd one), I'll be able to get a completely different phone.
I have every intention of calling them in the next couple of days to kindly let them know that the GPS isn't working as intended, of course. I just did a road trip to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and my GPS failed me over and over (yes, I've done all of the fixes known to man) while my Garmin Nuvi worked flawlessly, as usual.
So, anyone know what my options will be? Since I paid $199.99 to extend my contract for this POS, I feel that I should be offered any of their smartphones at that price, but really have no idea as to how this works.
Thanks in advance!
You can get alot
As long as you are clear in your point and sound like you know what you are talking about you should be fine.
I went through this right when the sensation came out.
I got one for free and got to keep my vibe by signing a 2 year with customer loyalty. They sent me tbe sensation and it had touchscreen isues so back it went and I went through 2 alltoghether.
It wasnt a bad phone but I missed my im on it again now.
samsung
If you really like not having a heavy phone (sensation was like a weight haha) or the phone with a million issues the g2x.
I'd stick it out just 2 more months tops and we will have the htc ruby/amaze 4g and the tmobile galaxy s2 "hercules" both are rumored to be on tmos 42 mps network which os way more than double our current max of 14.4
Thanks for the response! That's a good point... I'll wait until some better phones are released here soon and then call to get my replacement. No point in doing it now since the selection isn't all that great.
Yea its funny how there are so many levels of "top teir" devices that out can be hard to keep track of. I can say I'll be way happier with a lighter phone with a more visible screen outdoors anf that they won't know my warranties gone because I used the same oems software of who made the phone. I think brand presence aside that the 42mps is worth the wait. i live in the mpls area and tmobile is very sttong here for signal so im excited for that chip.
In the meantime time try using the custom rom toxic crazy 8 with the clean and shiny theme. I put it on a guy I work withs vibrant and now he is wayyy happier with his phone that ever before. He even stopped talking about needing a new phone all the time hah

[Q] What phone will you be upgrading to :D

I know one of these shows up every once and a while, but now that the selection of phones has grown quite a bit over the past two days, and the holiday season is coming soon, I was curious; What phone do you plan on upgrading to?
[Edit]
Oh ya, I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus in late November :3 I have always wanted a Nexus on Verizon. That with a grandfathered unlimited plan? YAY!
I will get whatever quad core phone is out when I can renew (in January ) as long as it's 4g, I'll be happy

Oops, I didn't think to include a "Better future phone" as a poll option, sorry all :3
I had a Bionic for a little while, but exchanged it for a Droid 3 the other day. The Bionic kept dropping data randomly, in spots where I knew there was a great 3G signal. I really don't need 4G bandwidth on a phone anyway, was looking for a solid radio for a change that wouldn't stutter or drop calls (so, Moto was a plus), the world phone is a plus. I know that all of the 4G phones have had data issues, and I wanted something I could count on while Verizon works out the 4G bugs. The D3 is still dual core, and has the same qHD on a smaller display. Bonus: it's a world phone. I may be traveling to Europe during this contract.
Also, the Bionic was really too big for what I wanted, so, to me, the Nexus looks like Maxwell Smart's shoe phone. I think I'd go Razr over the Nexus if I wanted a 4G phone, but that's me.
If I had to upgrade today, it would be the HTC Thunderbolt. It's not perfect, but when I played with one in the Verizon store it seemed slick and faster than the Incredible 2.
I like HTC since Motorola has been hostile to people who want to root their phones, and Samsung has lagged on updating to newer versions of Android.
Now that HTC has decided to pay blackmail to Microsoft over patent suits (like Samsung and several others), they're no longer pure. Motorola is the only company that hasn't bent over for Microsoft and I hope they stand up and sue to prove Microsoft is bluffing.
So who knows what things will look like in January when I upgrade. I might be buying a Motorola.

After the Eris, which Vzw phone for you?

Hi all,
I'll be eligible for an upgrade in a couple of weeks, and while my Eris running GSB has been great fun, I am ready for something that's faster, has more memory and a better screen. My wife has a DInc and I like it--excellent screen, a nice size--not too small, nor too large--and the browser is so much faster than on my Eris.
Therefore, I'm thinking about the DInc2, which adds in the ability to run a SIM when traveling outside the US as a nice perk. While Sense is attractive, I'll probly want to root it soon, both to de-bloat it and find a custom ROM that suits me.
So what current Vzw phones are you considering as a step-up after your Eris? Is 4g really valuable, if you're not streaming music or movies (I don't)? And does 4g suck battery and bandwidth (I'm hoping to keep my legacy unlimited data plan but don't know yet how that will work out). I'm not sure I like some of the newer humongous-sized phones, so a middle-sized device feels the best compromise.
Suggestions?
Thx in advance...
I will be getting the Galaxy Nexus once it is released
Either the Galaxy Nexus or Droid Razr perhaps unless Razr ships with locked bootloader.
I'm upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus in December, and I too am on a legacy unlimited plan. To the best of my knowledge we can upgrade to a 4G phone without loosing it, but I will probably have 4G off most of the time to save battery. I have wanted a Nexus on Verizon since the Nexis One and it is a huge upgrade over this phone (but I will always love my little Eris) so that is what I plan to get
As for the Droid Incredible 2, it would be a solid phone and nice upgrade, but you would be buying yesteryear's technology. But it would be better than no upgrade at all. Good Luck
P.S. Be sure to check out the dev community around any phone you are thinking about, the Nexus family usually has a large one but I don't know about the Droid Inc. 2

I'm down to the revolution, dx2, and the stratosphere.
Previously the fascinate but I've found other phones that are free.
I made a spreadsheet of my comparisons of free phones (either from BBY, TigerDirect or Wirefly)
I threw the charge in there just for comparison. I've seen it for $99
Galaxy s2. Screw verizon and their crappy phones.

I'm about to "do this".
The info here specifically the spreadsheet is invaluable. Thanks!
Stratosphere here. I really don't want the slide-out but...the phone has everything else.
They better not take away my legacy unlimited plan
I let you know, I'm probably going through Wirefly!
D
I love my Eris. But gave it to my daughter and upgraded to the Dinc2. I like the not too large footprint. Rooted easily. Great battery life. And a reasonable price.
I'll take some flames here and say the HTC Trophy 7:3
The Eris was the first and the last Android phone I will ever have. Only downside is the Trophy can't tether at this point, so I keep the Eris around only for tethering.
Down to one
Well this weekend I couldn't pass up the deal on the red DInc2. I upgraded my wife to one for free!! Soon we will have no Eris's in the house, I just need for the Galaxy Nexus to come out.

I think I'm gonna go try to upgrade early, so I can get the nexus and finally have a non cracked screen

REZOUND!
I went with the Rezound on launch day. I am so glad I got this phone. This thing is quick and has decent battery. I'm getting about 17-20 hours depending on my use(I have just 4g LTE turned on, with both LTE/CDMA it sucks the battery down. Just CDMA also allows better battery. You need the app LTE onoff to achieve just LTE on.). I know a lot of people say no because it doesn't have S-Off yet. The only reason I need S-Off is to permanently remove the bloatware. The phone has temp-root and you can freeze apps and it will stick on reboot. But honestly even with the bloatware this thing is fast and no memory problems!
The rezound sounds nice, but I went with the Tbolt a couple weeks ago. I got a good deal on it. I rooted it as soon as I got it, and so far I have had no problems out of it. With a custom rom running on it, I am getting better battery than my wife's stock dinc2 even with 4g turned on all the time. I think this is still a good phone to think about now that the price has come down.

This phone is the bomb!

Seriously.. WTF.. this thing is great.
To summarize a long story:
I had the G2x, I loved it, but got sick of paying so much so went back to Virgin Mobile and sold the G2x for $300 and paid cancellation fee.
I was getting about 4-5 Mbps on this "4G" phone and was thrilled with that.
On virgin I went back to my Optimus V, but it was too limiting so I got the Motorola Triumph and was somewhat happy.. but slow data speeds sucked (somewere around 1Mbps.. if that).
I found out about the Tmobile month to month plans so I returned my $300 Triumph and bought a Vibrant on Craigslist for $100 as I wanted a MIUI supported phone... in my mind that's an AMAZING deal as the phone is damn near flawless.
Ok.. end of the summary.
So.. now I'm playing with the Vibrant and have MIUI loaded on it.
I just loaded up Speedtest and have done it several times in different areas of town.. due to disbelief.
I was expecting abour 1Mbps or less (like on Virgin), but I've been getting 2 - 5Mbps (depending on what part of town) on 3G, Wifi off... these are the same speeds I saw on the G2x.
That's friggen insane!
For $100 I've gotten one of the best phones I've ever owned plus with fast data speeds... and I've gone through a lot of them.
Not to mention OnLive is now available for the phone and runs GREAT on it (although I haven't tried using a controller or anything yet, just viewing).
I'm so stoked right now.
Edit: Sorry.. just realized I posted this in Q&A and probably should have gone to General.. mods, please move if you see fit. Sorry about that.
Yeah MIUI + Samsung Vibrant is an awesome combination. Got mine for 100$ (2 year contract) at Costco when it first came out and have been loving it since.
However once the contract ends I'm probably going to get a SGSII.

What phone are YOU using before you get your Galaxy Note?

For the sheer comic value, I'll be using my HP Veer all this week until my note comes. How about the rest of you guys?
IPhone 4S.....IPhone 4 Prior to that. IPhone 3GS Prior to that. IPhone 3G Prior to that. IPhone prior to that.
IPhone 4S is going on Ebay/CraigsList once I have the Note in hand and verify what we all know already.......There is no comparison
My personal line is my Atrix, which I'm upgrading to the Note. My S2 is still my company phone.
I actually ended up using my HP Pre 3 for like half of last month. I'm currently using my Streak....but I may go back to that HP (since I'm not gonna get the at&t Note right away...)
I currently also have the Aria, which I haven't used in a while.
As of late, it's been a tough decision at times if I wanted the phablet screen estate...or to use WebOS. Going from big to mini basically.
I have been using a Palm Treo 680 for the hell of it. I loved the phone when it came out still love it for reasons I can not explain can't wait for my Note to get here. My daily phone is usually an iPhone 4s.
Using the tiny Skyrocket until the 17th

Replacing my Dell Streak, it has been slowly dying on me, I think I have flashed a ROM to many.
White skyrocket
Captivate. Rooted, Serendipity Rom, Go Launcher....but getting bogged down and slower by the day. Can't wait to get the Note.
Currently using the old lg vu. Was using galaxy s ii skyrocket before that and before that I had an iPhone 4s and way before that I was on t mobile using the htc amaze
Sgs2 here. Can't wait for the note.

Right now I'm suffering with a deep red blackberry 8310. I can barely check the weather on this phone
I've leaving the Moto Atrix w/ CM9, before that iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, 2G (or whatever). Now if I could just get my wife to switch from her 4S I'll be great. She calls me a traitor.....lmao.
Currently using Atrix, but it's awfully buggy & unstable, (even after latest SOAK update) still I like it for the lapdock value.
I develop products with Apple devices, so I have all iPhones but after I learned all about the first one, got bored and set them aside. I will say Siri is seriously funny to play with.
Will keep the Atrix and lapdock till I get the Note sorted out for replacing the Atrix, the USB host function of the Lapdock is essential for data shuffling (in mainland China internet is spotty, so dropbox is not too reliable); hoping that I'll be able to use Note with maybe a tiny powered hub to connect hdd, thumb drives etc.
Ordered Note at ATT waiting......
I have two different ROMd skyrockets, a captivate, and a focus that I switch between
Pam Pre 2
Was using a day 1 release palm pre until a couple of months ago. After messing with CM9 on my Touchpad, the Note is my next phone.
Currently have an iPhone 4S.
Gonna wait to get the Note until AmazonWireless drops the price to free on contract. It shouldn't take that long plus it will give me time to go in the stores to get a feel for it in person and to find out from the early adopters how the battery life is w/ LTE if your not in an LTE area.
HTC Vivid here...
I have the Infuse so it should be an easy adjustment.
I have 2 phones a Inspire4g which I use for my work (this is what I swapping out for the Note!) and my SGS2 (My personal phone) which at this time I wouldnt give up for much at this time... only another note would I give this up for at this point but I would love to see someone carry around 2 notes! lol
