My phone will receive texts for about a day. Then it stops receiving them entirely and the only resolution I've found so far is to reboot.
Is this a known problem and if so, how can it be permanently resolved?
Do you use Google voice? I forgot to install it and missed voice mails and texts for a few hours. A friend had a task manager that was killing Voice and he could not figure it out so he brought me his phone, after he threw it. I took voice off the auto kill list and he is good now.

I wish this was my issue, but no, my phone is stock, and rooted using OCR.
I do not think I have been having this issue since day one of owning the photon (9/15), so if that's the case, it started at some later point.
Its more than likely sprints network and not the phone. Visit the official Sprint forums and you will see a lot of complaints about this same issue from people with all types of phones.
Over the past week (or longer) sprint was experiencing nationwide outages. I too couldn't receive text on and off. Also my 3G has just been off but i could make calls. I called and thats what a rep told me; makes sense i guess. Sprint blows anyways

OK, I got a real nice surprise today when I saw in my phone bill that i had been dialing internationally through my wireless provider even though "google voice" would pop up on my phone since it is set to be used for ALL international calls. I now set it to ask before dialing, but I go check my call history in google voice and I have no calls made... WTF????
same
I had the same problem with $160 surprise bill.
Thank you very much!
It seems that the calls dialed out are just not going out through GV - regardless if they were local or international.
I called a friend's phone from my GV and my regular cell number shows despite asking it to dial all calls. While the phone shows that google voice is dialing out, it's just your phone dialing.
WTF, stuck with a very high bill now. Who is to blame? SE, ATT, GV?
I am out of the country at the moment and cannot check but I saww Google voice was updated, maybe it works after this update.

Unfortunately you. The best way to ensure gv is being used is to make calls from the browser. I have had ongoing problems with the app.
Instead I created an icon on my nineteen with gv as the bookmark. When I hit it, it goes straight to the gv call screen. It ain't pretty but it works.

That is a snarky answer. I never ever had a problem with GV on 1.6 from March to October of this year, and from what I read it was even more integrated in 2.1, why would I assume a Google App would not work properly when it pops up when I make an international call? Thank you for the workaround though.
Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come across that way :-( .
I agree I did expect the same as you. When I got stung it was around $300 more than my bill normally was. Calling my buddy in Cali at 35 cents a minute flat!
The only way I have found to be sure is the browser way and only because you are receiving a call. IMO gv should have some sort of pre-ring notification to verify it's operating.
Reprimand me if this has been addressed already and my stupid ass couldn't find it.
I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. EDGE will suffice for simple things such as sms/mms, phone calls (obviously), and web browsing with Opera Mini.
At my house, we have wifi and my phone is always connected to it and signal strength is always excellent. Since I live in the woods, I get no more than 2 or 3 bars of cell service at any given time, if I'm lucky. One or two is the norm.
Can I make calls over Wifi? Or sent text/picture messages? Perhaps I simply don't understand how it works, but a large percentage of the time when I try to reply to a text, it fails and I have to send it repeatedly. Or if someone sends me a picture of some sort. Takes forever to download, if it works at all. Making a phone call is an exercise in futility. Perhaps it has to be done a certain way.
I'm running the latest version of ShoStock2 at the moment, but these problems happen with AOKP, CM9, and Phone Bricker, amongst others.
I'm sure there's apps that allow you to do that. First Google result shows Talkatone. Idk if there's other similar ones/better ones, but you can start there.
As for text, I'm sure there's an app for that too
I used textfree on my iPod. Can't recall if I couldn't send or receive pics though.
For calls, to my understanding, naturally. No. I'd say get something like Skype where you can do VoIP and do all your calls from there on WiFi, as for texts and MMS you really shouldn't have any problems. as far as I'm concerned, texts should be fine, and mms should download via wifi if you are connected. But if it continues to be a problem you could always get Textfree or Whatsapp and get your friends in on that. Its platform wide (literally) and is supported on every device i can think of.
Hit thanks if I've helped you.
Hope you figure out this issue!
You could use text free for texts you just couldn't use your own number or Google voice of course for text and calls. But you can't route your actual cell phone calls and texts over wifi. T-Mobile has that capability but not us on at&t.

Actually there is a new app called Sidecar that lets you call any number over WiFi for free.
I have tried it, and its pretty good.

Also bobsled.
Voice calls? YES
SMS? YES
MMS? NO
I thought that Google voice was supposed to start supporting MMS, but not sure when. I have been waiting for a while. I use Groove ip as well.
Whats difference between SMS and MMS? A friend and I are 7 days late and our phones are off.
I had viber but got rid of it cause i wasn't using it. (maybe redownload?)
Also my google voice doesn't let me make calls or send messages? (it says I can do international calls - but I turned it off cause it said I needed money in a "google account" sigh...)
I can still use wifi at my house, but thats about it.

I get the same exact text usually within about 5 minutes after I get the first one. It's not all from the same people and they have different carriers. It's also completely random, sometimes on wifi and sometimes not. I suppose that people could be messing with me, but I'm not big on conspiracy theories. I'm using the stock messaging app. Any idea what is going on? Any fixes?
Edit: The duplicate messages show the same time as the original as well, even though they show up like a new message like 5 minutes later. Wtf
also have the same issue sometimes it more than five mins couldn't bother getting duplicate text messages.also i figured my wife wouldn't be sending me duplicate messages and when i checked her phone she had only sent it once. so just decided to download a anti-sms bomber app and has been doing the job for me
its sprints network.
Ya never had a problem until I got the evo 4g lte. I get the same messages about 50x and it last for up to 4 days. I am still getting text from my mom and she sent that Monday morning. What is really weird is it only happens with text from my wife and mom, it doesn't happen with any of the other 200 contacts I text.
Today I just noticed when I used Google voice for incoming and out going text. I got all my text messages, as well as all my messages were sent. However, when Google voice received a text, the stock text messenger still has yet to receive the same text..... WTF

That's because Google Voice uses data (3G, 4G or WiFi) and it's usually a push service so you receive it right away considering no problems with your data connection. Text messages, MMS and voice calls don't come in through the data band but instead through the voice band. So if Sprint's network is congested or it was a bad activation by the Sprint rep you'll get things late.
I recommend everyone to reprovision their phones, I had this issue with mine the first couple of days, resprovisioned it, and no issues at all since.

Help with reprovision? Guessing it's ##3282# or something?

Ive noticed that when sending certain sms messages, the messages will keep spooling and not send unless I delete and resend it. Seems to happen at random times, even with no signal it should still send when it gets a signal right ? Using the Handcent SMS
Same thing happens to me.
I had the exact same issue. I stopped using Handcent and the issue went away. I've never had this issue on any of my last 5 android devices. Really frustrating since I have used handcent as long as I can remember.
+1 - Yep, me too! Even using GVoice + Sprint integration, too!
Also, if I restart my phone all the texts will magically send. Anyone else find this to be the case?
I also noticed that I can't get voice to text to work. I speak, select the line that reflects what I said....and then nothing. It doesn't paste it in. Any one else?

i have this same issue with handcent as well
I used to always have issues with handcent. When I had the Hero none of the MMS would send. So since then I have been using Go SMS Pro.
I am using Go Sms and I have the same issue. It seems if I am receiving a text at the same time, mine won't send and I have to delete it and start over. Also, when I send an MMS, it will create drafts of the same thing that I have to remove. My voice to text on swiftkey won't work either. I will have to try it out on stock.

I was having the same problem and what I thought was happening was the phone was closing Handcent (multitasking issue) before the text sent. I don't currently have my EVO LTE to prove that this is the case.

How can you be so sure? I started experiencing this the day I got this phone.
I have the same issues. Unfortunately, the only time I actually get text on time and/or send text reliably is when I use Google voice. I hate Google voices SMS setup, its ugly, and you can't send attachments. Its a shame we have this very cool phone, that can't do the basic cell phone operations. However, I do agree that this issue could very well be a Sprint signal issue and not the fault of HTC.
I'd also like to add, this is my second EVOLTE and both had this issue. Also both phones were and is having problems receiving calls. My missed calls don't even register, so once again, I have to rely on Google voice to let me know I missed a call via email, even after my phone never rang.

I can 100% guarantee you that this is not the reason for this btw....it may be in some places the reason but it is NOT the main reason this is happening...
I know for a FACT there has been 0 work on the towers in my area and seen this same thing happen...
Ok, so for me this is only an issue with third party messaging apps.
I have been using the stock app now and haven't had the issue once.
Go back to Handcent sms, boom! issues again.

I have the same issue. I had the same issue briefly a few weeks ago; however, now it's happening only on Sprint's network. If I check "Roam Only" on Meanrom I'm able to place calls, and send/receive text messages just fine. It started happening again when I used the LazyPanda s-off. I asked Sprint to do an HLR reset, and I still have the same problem. I've updated the profile 7 times now.
My phones sms is all borked out. Phone is completely stock, unrootedx with the latest ota update.
My sms are ALWAYS timestamped wrong which seriously ****s with my ocd. Sent will he fine but received are always hours behind or ahead.
Also lately, phone won't send me my sms all day and then bam!! 12 messages all at once.
I have fine reception, never roaming, full bars of 3G almost always. What gives???

Are you using the AirRave (network extender) while at home? I am, and its been messing with my text messages since I switched to sprint. Doesn't matter which phone (OG Evo, Evo lte, Epic). Time stamps are screwy, duplicates sent, and sometimes it cuts the 1st half of my message off which makes my texts look like I'm crazy... lol... Only happens when I'm connected to the AirRave at home though...
I've had this sort of thing happen to me two or three times over the last 5+ years with Sprint. It was incredibly irritating, but it did go away on it's own after about two days. If it's happening to you for longer than that... I'd be concerned. And to second the above post, if you're using an Airave, all bets are off when it comes to text messages. I'm currently a month into back and forth phone calls to Sprint about getting mine replaced to see if that fixes my sms issue.
Use ICS tranquility and your timestamps will NEVER be wrong.
Not using Airrave.. its been going on for about two weeks now o__o
Thanks for the tip on ics tranquility, will definitely check it out!!
maybe this will work
I had this happen to me just a couple days ago, but I was not receiving or able to send sms at all. I went into a sprint store and the rep told me he had to call in to have my text messaging codes reset. So he called in and reset it and it worked! He said you should be able to do it over the phone, just don't be on your phone, or on chat.
Sense is completely messing with my SMS messages. Mine come in under the wrong number.
If I text a lot and delete some messages, the next person to text me comes in as the last person I deleted.
In the stock SMS app I can see it come in under the wrong person then quickly change to the right.
If I use Chomp or Go SMS Pro, it stays under the wrong person unless I kill the app and restart it. My texts are constantly going to the wrong people, and to my friends Facebook posts.
I've had this problem with every build thus far. I've wiped, RUU'd...still does it.
My friend is running Meanrom, it does it on his. Doesn't seem to do it on ROMs without Sense.
Someone else has to have noticed this.
I've never had any of this happen, nor have I ever heard of the texts messages being labeled as coming from the wrong contact. If it happens with other messaging apps, why do you think it's sense?

In my original post I said it happens with the stock app.
Its more of a problem with third party apps because they don't work the same way the stock app does. So when the message is displayed wrong for that brief second it grabs that. If I kill and restart third party app, the message changes back to the right person.
The reason I think its sense is because sense handles the messaging on these phones, and the problem cannot be replicated on a senseless rom. I can duplicate this problem on a rooted phone with meanrom. What are the odds chomp sms and go sms pro would have the exact same bug? Both of them rely on the core sms framework for data, so whatever is messing with them is happening in core. I've got a post about this over at sprint and it seems to be picking up a little steam. A fee more people.are crawling out of the woodwork with this problem.
if handcent is that third party app u using it will always do it .something is wrong with that app .use go sms
