3G Reconnect Problems? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi guys,
Since the update to 45.3.6, I've had some issues with the phone reconnecting to 3G post-screen timeout and lock. Sometimes it's really fast, and sometimes it won't reconnect at all. Most of the time, I would have to do a reboot and it would finally connect. Anyone else having the same issues?
I remember a lot of people had the same problems prior to the OTA update bringing everyone to 45.2.7. It seemed that THAT OTA helped with the connectivity issues. Also, I am running Juice Defender, and wasn't sure if that might be a part of the problem as my settings might interfere.
Would love your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I had updated the PRL/Profile a while ago, and it said I was already up to date. As it turns out, I changed a setting in Juice Defender to have the text notifcation and hid the Status Bar icon. Previously, I didn't like having it there and disabled it...which it doesn't recommend and I think that screwed with connectivity. Now, as soon as I unlock, I can see Data being activated almost instantly.
Thanks anyway!

Anyone else notice this cool wifi setting?

A friend of mine, who also has the 3d, noticed that there was a setting in the wifi settings that enables you to set your phone to connect to the strongest wifi signal. Just go to wireless and connections, go to wifi settings, press the menu button, go to advanced, and select best wifi performance. I never noticed this and thought it was awesome since we have a ton of wifi networks at work that are better in certain spots.

I had been wondering if there was a description somewhere that tells exactly what that setting does. I always thought it ran the WiFi radio at a higher current in order to keep a better signal. Are you sure it has anything to do with always picking the strongest signal?

It's better to keep wifi connected when the screen is off as it uses less energy than the 3g radio

I'd still like to know your source for the info saying that this setting evaluates the signal from all wifi sources and picks the one with the best signal. This setting is not outlined anywhere other than to mention that it uses more battery. Is it just something you turned on and you noticed it did that... or did you read it somewhere?

Disabling "always on mobile data" will prevent you from getting push email from apps like K9 mail. Won't it? I mean, if I'm waiting for an email and I want to hear a chime when it comes in (I have K9 set up that way), it'll never come through if there's no wifi and I uncheck "always on mobile data". Correct?
Mike

If you have a spot where this would help, check it out. Mine does it at work. We have a customer wifi and a service wifi that get better strengths in certain spots and it will switch back and forth.

Someone should do a couple runs of Speedtest with this on and off to see if there is a real difference in throughput.
Also, turning off "always on data" does not stop Gmail from syncing, and it does wonders for battery life in my experience.

Correct. Whenever you turn your phone screen on though, data will reconnect and stay connected for a couple of minutes, any e-mails that were waiting to be pushed to your device will then get sent. You won't get any notifications if you never check your phone all day, but I'm usually getting a text every once in a while which I turn the phone on to reply to.
You'll get immense battery savings with always on mobile data turned off as well.

[Q] WiFi Scanning every 2-3 seconds, HELP!!!

As the title said, my Verizon Fascinate scans WiFi every 2-3 seconds and a MAJOR drain in my battery. I believe it started when I flashed EH03 radio, but not really sure if that's the main issue. I have TSM Resurrection 2.1 ROM installed. My kernel is right now geewiz-2.5-kernel (updated on 1/22/12) but I also used KGB-EH03-FA16 Kernel with the same problem. What could be causing this and what can I do to fix it?
Please help!!!
You can set your wifi scan interval in the build.prop, I know there are other ways to do it too. A quick googling should yield a more helpful answer regarding all the ways it can be done.
I thought it only scanned when it's turned on and not already connected to a network though, are you turning it off when you're not using it? I guess I can't really see how else it would be draining your battery.

Thanks! I will look up the build.prop solution to wifi scan issue. The problem is that it scans continuously regardless of whether it's connected to any network or not. And yes, I have to keep it turned off when I'm not using it.
*update* I checked the build.prop setting and it was set for 120. I'm assuming this is in seconds so shouldn't the wifi should only scan every 2 minutes??? I changed the setting to 600s=10min, but it still scans continuously What's going on???
You're correct, the interval you see in the build.prop is in seconds. If that isn't helping then I'm not really sure.. How can you tell it's continuously scanning? Is it an app you're using that shows this?

The little wifi icon in the status bar keeps going on and off. And when I tried to used the market app, it constantly said I needed a wifi connection.
Anyways, after some additional investigation, I tried turning off and resetting my wireless router - and it worked!!! I'm not sure if that was the only reason for continuous wifi scan, but at least it's not scanning every 2-3 secs now. Well, it hasn't for the last 24 hours, so hopefully it will stay that way
Glad it's sorted! I couldn't really tell from your posts exactly what was happening, but if it's doing that when you have wifi on and (hopefully) connected, then it sounds like more an issue with your wifi connection itself as opposed to just the phone's.
About the wifi scan interval in the build.prop, I believe that just refers to how often it will look for a connection when wifi is on, but not connected to a network.

yes that is correct. I also agree with the issue being related to the wifi and not the phone. i hardly use the wifi on my phone but when i do, i never have that problem. i got grandfathered into the unlimited data from verizon, so wifi for me is pretty much useless.

I tried all of those combinations but neither worked. Took the cell to a VZW store and they replaced it. Everything is good with this one, so the old was just faulty. Are you guys using any screen protectors or cases?

When this happens, go to advanced Wifi settings and check your IP. Most likely you have a 169. address and no useful default gateway. This generally happens when DLNA IP option is enabled and your DHCP server isn't fast enough for the [bad] rom settings provided by HTC. If that's the case, the just disable that option and cycle Wifi.
im having a problem as well just got my dna yesterday and it seems when its asleep for a bit i awake it and then disconnects flashes to 4g connected back to my network but i have no activity at that moment then i have turn wifi off and on to get it back
i know its not my network no other problems with over 5 other devices and never had a problem with any phone for years
My girlfriend has this issue with her DNA. They replaced it with a brand new one, same issue. We have a wireless router that has 3 laptops, another phone, two tablets plus my friends phones and tablets when they come over, no issues for anyone. But the two DNA's we have tried, do.
Connects, and then it says it is connected but stops working after a short time. Shows that it is connected but anything that requires internet sits there spinning. Disable Wifi and it kicks over to 4G and emails and stuff starts flooding in. Go into Wifi settings and turn it back on, and it seems like it keeps turning itself on and off, like it is stuck in a loop.
Both DNA's, same exact issue. BOth stock, non-root, both have had hard resets, nothing seems to fix it. Some searching on Google says that the issue, while not common, it's all that un-common either. Seems to be an issue with the phone itself.

it really isn't a big deal. If you have to return it for any reason bricking it or reverting it to stock isn't a problem and in all the years I've been working with Android, out of tens of thousands of users that I've had exposure to, I've never once have i heard of a carrier denying warranty work because of a phone being modified. they're generally just not smart enough to even know how to check if they even care to check. The only thing that I've heard about is people walking into store and telling them that the phone has been modified. In that case they will use it against you. Anyway you're better off with a third party ROM and a better kernel for this phone.
Used FXR from the market and fixed my wifi issues.

Went back to vzw, they said that HTC knows of the problem, it is software related but no eta on the fix. Not wishing for another thunderbolt debacle, she exchanged it for a RAZR HD.

I tried it exactly how you said to, disabled the DLNA option, turned off then on my Wi-Fi, and boom, started working again. I thought my phone could have been faulty, but I bet anyone who tries this will see their issue fixed.

I'm having the same problem but the DLNA option was already turned off by default. Wifi works right after a restart and then stops working a short time later. Once it stops working, I get a blank screen when I try to view the available wireless networks, even though this screen was populated with multiple networks previously. Frequently, I get a "Process com.android.settings isn't responding" message. I had these exact issues with my first DNA and Verizon sent me a replacement. Same issues with the replacement. Anyone else experiencing this?

Is this a CM10/AOKP Bug?

Hello friends,
I am actually a Sense convert, thanks to the combo of CM10 and AOKP, found in ROMs like JellyBam and PAC Man...
The ONLY thing that's making me unable to use those ROMs as my Daily Driver, is the following issue:
1. Turn on 3G and GPS togther
2. Launch map and choose a place to Navigate to (Navigation is launched)
3. EVERYTHING LOCKS PERFECT! My turn by turn is now ready
4. Give it a minute or two on the road and BOOM! The phone loses signal, 3G is cut off, GPS loses its lock, and I am stranded in the middle of my destination
Give it a minute or two... sometimes minutes on end, and the GPS locks again (after signal is restored and 3G returns), but shortly soon after, the issue repeats itself.
Now, can someone please confirm for me that that is indeed a CM10/AOKP bug and all of you have this issue? Trust me, I have tested it in MANY areas, it's not a weak signal issue. If I only have my 3G on, the connection is RARELY lost (probably with bad signal), but when GPS is used WITH 3G, it's almost UNUSEABLE and dangerous to navigate with, due to the loss of attention from the road and losing your turns ALL THE TIME!
I would appreciate any help on people confirming that I am not alone on this one, and that if you guys know any fixes or workarounds for this? I would love to offer a Logcat even, but personally, I have given up on Devs never willing to do that for the issues I have reported in the past. Not complaining, just saying they are busy or just don't want to help me with Logcats.
Thank you and I hope everyone is well. Appreciate you guys reading the message.
I've been on cm10 for over a month and have never had that problem. I've used navigation for 2 hours straight without a hitch.
Are you on the cm nightlys? I use the irc builds.

I am suffering from the same issue, it persists for me on all CM10 builds and JellyBAM. I think I did what you said, but the bug did occur again (while using nav, gps and 3g signal goes out for a few minutes). I just wanted to double check what you were suggesting. When you say menu, reset, do you just mean reseting the phone after installing the GPS status and toolbox, or is there a menu option in GPS status and toolbox I'm not seeing?

Yea I'm thinking that's it. I'm not a 100% sure as I've not had this issue or a need to use the app. However that would seem to be it. If that fails look threw the settings for anything that has the reset option. Also being cautious is never stupid. Hope this helps.

For WiFi I use an app from the play store called REGPON wifi KeepAlive and it solved the problem for me. I don't have any problem with mobile data connection.
Android has a built in wifi sleep policy, but not every phone backend allows you to modify it. If your device is rooted, you can try an app such as Spare Parts+ from the Play store, it has an option to set your sleep policy. I have used it on several devices, my One X+ included.

Now that I am rooted I am trying the method in that thread, so far it is working and is better than using an app to do it.
REGPON works like a charm, and I am unrooted.
I think that thread deals with it going to sleep between 12-7am whereas my problem was EVERYTIME the screen turned off when I turn the screen back on it will reconnect.
I have NOT had a problem since I switched to REGPON.

Just a follow up to this, WiFi still dropped so back to REGPON WiFi Keep Alive for me.
unfortunately , REGPON is not helping .. still the signal drop off .. but less frequently i would say
Any new solutions for this?
It's extremly annoying!
I tried:
1. Regpon
2. that nice trick, by deactivating smartsync at all with system tools ()
3. Smartsync disabler [APP]
4. Spare parts [APP]
5. Terminal Emulator
There has to be a solution for that.
I would like to keep this topic up, until there comes up a working solution
Thanks.
