[Q] I can't install any kernel or rom - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I got a problem with my CWM when i will flash a kernel or a rom.
When i install a kernel then my phone stuck at the yellow triangle and i need to root it again to start my phone. Then i try again to flash the kernel and i got this by cwm
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
if i have this i need to install root again :/ and then i don't have my new kernel but i have the kernel of CF-root =(!
please help

Try manually mounting /cache in CWM (I think it's in mounts and storage) menu.

I have the same problem; this happens for all kernels which embed a CWM v5.
Also I' can't even downgrade my kernels earler than KI3 (same error). The only kernels that work are CF-root KI3, KI4 and KI8.
For the same problem I can't flash any customized rom which do not embed any of the working kernels above.
I tried already wiping and formatting every possible thing, but nothing helped. And manual mounting cache in CWM fails.

Those who have problems with cwm 5, (like some partitions not mounting, updater apps rebooting into samsung recovery, etc) flash cwm 4 zip from your cwm recovery!
http://www.mediafire.com/file/h1yia0gt1sbnbie/cwm-4.0.1.5.zip

This is the same problem I faced....you can see that there here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311692
and till today no solution for it.

this will not work as phone is unable to mount anything see the OP. I tried every sort of thing but nothing works.

Ah, damn, then we're not alone...
I think it all started when I decided to give it a try to one latest stock roms (it was KI1 or KI4 i guess...) as I was on KE7.
Before that I installed several early MIUI roms without any problem. But now I'm stuck... hopefully there will be a fix anytime soon!
Funnily enough I bought the I9100 when I heard that it was planned a MIUI rom development (I had a Desire with MIUI for about a year), and now that's officially released I can't install it...

same problem i was facing two days back....i tried all things but it was still used to stuck at yellow triangle. i was able to flash kernal but as it was stuck at yellow triangle i was not able to flash custom ROM.
then i decided to give my last chance....i tried to flash with cf-root KI3....n FINALLY it was booted. Feww !!!. then i flashed custom ROM . hope it will work for you also.
I attached kernal with this post. Use this kernal if you are on Stock 2.3.5 KI3

Right, here's what i did:
1) Wiped everything (/data, /cache, /dalvik)
2) Reboot in download mode and installed KI3 with 3 parts (PDA, DATA and CSC)
3) Self reboots, some yellow scrips appear, no errors, than another self-reboot
4) First boot, the stock rom works fine.
5) Reboot in download mode and applied the CF-root patch, and first boot. Again the stock rom rooted works fine.
6) Reboot in recovery mode: wipe /data, /cache / dalvik
7) install zip from sdcard -> miuiandroid_sgs2-1.10.20.zip (the latest official MIUI rom)
8) Stuck at yellow triangles, with continuous self reboot...
9) Reboot in download mode, reapplied CF-root KI3
10) Stuck at black screen past the yellow triangle....
11) Reboot in recovery mode: wipe /data, /cache / dalvik
12) install zip from sdcard -> miuiscotland_I9100-1.10.20.zip (another official MIUI rom)
13) Stuck at yellow triangles, with continuous self reboot...
14) Reboot in download mode, reapplied CF-root KI3
15) Stuck at black screen past the yellow triangle....
That's what it happens with every rom I try to install. The only rom I managed to install was the Villainrom 3.0, all other roms fail.
The rom I'm using now is wanam KI4 stock dedoxeded non wipe on top of stock KI4.
---------- Post added at 10:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 AM ----------
By the way: even restoring the nandroid backup of the original rom, which I did as soon as i rooted the phone, fails as it gets stuck at the yellow triangle.
If I enter recovery mode it gives:
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
Could it be that either the latest stock ROM or CF-root, when installed, change permanently something?

I would know if this problem happens once you install CWM 5...is it right?

For sure it happens whenever I install CWM 5 or one of the older CF-Root kernels.
The only CF-Root kernels that don't give the /mount problems are KI2, KI3, KI4, KI8.

I meant to say yes CWM5 can be a problem. as I was able to flash 2 custom roms which were having CWM4. But any other custom rom which was having CWM5 is not getting flashed.

Are there also stock based roms?

CWM5 or CWM4 is not the problem. u need to use the 3 tar(PDA,CSC,MODEM) Odin flashing method. if you did it right there shouldn't be any yellow traingles at boot. and i had EXACTLY the same problem couple of weeks ago, now am on MIUI.
wish you guys goodluck.

I tried already with the 3 tar XXKI3. The stock rom boots nicely without any yellow triangle.
When I root it the yellow triangle appears (as expected) and the phone still boots nicely.
The problem comes when I try to install MIUI, as it bootloops at the yellow triangle.
I think I tried every possible thing, given my download count is at 126...

lol 126! i thought i had the highest, but not anymore , try this way.how i fixed mine. first flash your bootable rom and root, then perform a hard reset ( i don't remember the code for hard reset but it was something like *#numbers*numbers*#) this will wipe all ur phone's data, including ur SD card files, so please make backup 1st.
after hard reset(not factory reset) reboot to CMW and wipe all again (factory reset, cache, dalvik, then go to mounts and storage> format system, cache, data, then COPY your flash-able zip (i would suggest CM7 first, same way i did mine) onto your sdcard and try flash(if CM7 flash it twice before rebooting) if it was successful you will get stuck on boot-up (not reboot loop) just go bact to CMW and wipe factory reset, cache and dalvik, reflash CM7 twice also then reboot, if your lucky it will work for u
cheers!

Ok, somewhow I managed to succeed!
I made some additional tests (also following henrychukx suggestions) and, at a certain point, I decided to remove the EXTERNAL SD card.
I think that was the key to the success (at least for me)!!
With the external SD card removed, i flashed the "speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-13" kernel then I flashed the 1.0.21 miui ROM, the I flashed again with ODIN the Siyah-v2.1rc3 kernel.
Magically MIUI booted!
I've also been able to boot into CWM 5 recovery (without any strange /mount error) and update MIUI to 1.10.28 (but had to flash again the Siyah-v2.1rc3 kernel)
Not sure how stable it is this setup, but so far it seem to work

First I did remove my external sd card and then:
While on stock, After following above steps my phone got stuck on Boot Screen, I again rebooted in CWM Recovery did the Factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik and rebooted again phone got stuck on Boot screen...any way I thought of flashing a kernel through odin I flashed Speedmod kernel but still phone hangs on boot screen. Now I am going back to flash stock again.

No ROM Booting

So i managed to solve the problem that i had.
When i said that i could flash only the stock one, i was flashing XXKI3 as one file after each failed attempt to flash a custom one.
So i tried and flashed another stock rom, again as 1 file. after the flash was done the phone again stucked at first screen wit the triangle.
After that i thought that something was really messed up in the phone and flashed again XXKI3 with PIT and multiple files and offcourse RE-Partition.
After that flash a stock rom with 1 file and modified bootloader from Intratech's thread, this way you can also reset the binary caunter with a jig (can find many on ebay).
After finish flashing and first boot
root with CF kernel and flash any custom rom. It worked as it should. Now i am on a custom rom and trying to see which one suits me best.
Thank Jiganet for some may be needed modified bootloader which is recommended so you can reset binary counter.
Everyone tha nk you for your suggestions and help.
any rom that i install is not getting beyond the bootlogo. i had xxki3 stock with cf-root xxki3 kernel.
every install i make full wipe on everything before(data, cache, dalvik).
any body any idea?
only stock rom working.
The first boot takes some time. Are you waiting that long?

1. Enter Clockworkmod recovery
1a. Do a Backup (not a must, but i suggest) from the cwm recovery of your current rom/settings.
2. Wipe Data/Cache Factory reset
3. Flash the new rom you want
4. Again (not needed but well..) Wipe Data/Cache Factory Reset
5. Wipe Cache
6. Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache (this is why you get bootloops)
7. Reboot to system
Wait 4-5 minutes and you will have your new, shiny working rom.
Hope it helps, cheers

Mh strange, the strange is.. with the stock rom is working.
Looks like your phone dosnt like the rom you are flashing so the quesion now is:
Are you sure, you are flashing a rom your phone can read? I know the i9100G and the AT&T versions cant be flashed with the standard (i9100) S2 roms (there is a specific thread i think here on xda for those versions)
mine is an unbranded i9100 from Greece. i am flashing the correct roms.

every body read first post managed to solve this.
Hi was there a solution to this problem as I seem to get it with EVERY rom I try to install from zip?
Hi to all, this is my first Post and this is my First Android I come from an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3GS and my last phone was an iPhone 4!!! now I'm extremely happy with my new SGS2!!!
I have been searching a lot!!! for a solution for this flash loop issue,
1 - I have flash to a stock 2.3.5 KI3 samfirmware,
2- then I have Odin>PDA>cf-root-KI3-4.2.tar to root my phone.
3 - After that I downloaded 3 custom roms, DarkyROM2_KI3, VillainROM-3.0.0-signed and Cyanogen cm_galaxys2_full-112. put them on my root internal sdcard.
4 - booted to ClockworkMod Recovery menu.
5 - Wipe Data/Factory Reset
6 - Wipe Partition Cache.
7 - Install Zip from sdcard.
and every thing seems ok, but when i restart, it stays on the boot loop, even if i manage to enter to CWM Recovery menu it says that E: Can't Mount ... bla bla bla
I had been trying to put a custom rom so much that my binary counter is now on 10
I'm going to try what you wrote on the first post!
Restore to stock KI3 firmware using pit file and repartition.
after that install the cf-root kernel. Restart and try to install any custom firmware.
Hope it works
Not it did not work, Maybe the problem was Wipe Partition cache after installing new rom, going to stock and repeating
I'm having this exact same problem, please post here if you find an answer to your problem.
I first installed checkrom with no problems, then i decided to wipe and try install dlevrom but after rebooting i'm left with the same problem as above.
It's only when i flash stock 2.3.5 KI3 through odin with pit, repartition, all checked that my phone works.
I then repeat the steps of flashing cf root through odin and then try flash a custom rom, either checkrom or dlevrom and neither work.
Another try another fail!
I have no idea on what else can I do!!! tried again and nothing! I tied cf-root 4.1 and nothing and cf-root 4.2 and nothing!.
I'm having this exact same problem, please post here if you find an answer to your problem.

After i got the stuck on boot! I can restore to stock by only using the PDA, I don't need to set the pit file again!, but I'm usign all the files on Odin to see If that makes any difference but nothing!!!
I wonder how mariosraptor did it!!!! Can you throw us a light???
I have explained it on first post. Just follow step by step the first post directions.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Nope it didn't work
The steps I did:
1. Restore to stock using PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC.
2. After it boots root the phone with cf root 4.1 for ki3
3. Use CWM Recovery to flash the new rom on internal sdcard.
I have been doing it with wipe data, wipe cache, wipe develk.
Nothing is there a step that im missing?
Thanks
SOLVED!!!!!! JAJAJA
The only problem, was one minor thing, a little thing called Bootloader!
I installed the old bootloader!
find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
And after that every thing worked perfectly, no boot loops!!!!
Hope it helps!!!

[Q] CWM fail to update?

Hi there, I need your help and advice please.
Here’s my problem. My phone is the SGS2 running KI3 rooted with CF-root KI3 flashed the secure kernel and then flashed the zImage so I still have root CWM and to get rid of the yellow triangle. I have downloaded CM nightly 88 to my laptop and transferred it to my S2 via usb cable into the download folder.
Here’s where the problem comes into play when I run CF’s CWM and choose reboot into recovery I do a wipe/factory reset / wipe cache and update via sdcard, I pick the cm88 from the download folder and it starts to update and then stops. I reboot and it’s stuck on the Samsung S2 page (boot loop). I then have to get into the recovery and restore my phone to the previous state. Can someone help me I would like to try the CM’s custom rom but don’t know what I’m doing wrong? Thanks.

me2 only stock roms work for me =(
I think there was an issue with the version of CWM used on the CF-roots since it's been modified by CF and because it's an older version.
After you've rooted with CF, try flashing a kernel on there with a newer version of CWM on there (I used codeworkx's kernel from the Cyanogenmod wiki I've attached below with CWM 4.0.1.4).
Once this kernel is on there, then try flashing the CM7 ROM as per this thread. I prefer flashing from recovery myself, but it's your call.
Make sure you flash it twice in a row if you're having issues.
The problem, as stated above is that cf root kernel installs a modified version of CWM that won't work with CM7. Another thing is you have to flash a stock KH3 because KI3 has the new bootloader (unless you flashed KI3 with the old bootloaders). Then, you have to flash the codeworkx kernel so you get a compatible version of CWM. Once in CWM clear data factory reset + clear cache partition + clear dalvik cache (from advanced).
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Flash the ROM from sd card and when finish do not reboot device, just flash it again without wiping anything in between, just 2 consecutives "install from sd card". When this is done you can reboot the system and then enter again to CWM to flash the google apps .zip file that you can download from the CM7 thread.
Hope this helped. When I flashed CM7 i had exactly the same problem and went back to stock cause it was a pain in the ass to flash it fr the first time. But once you get in CM7, everything becomes great and easy, and you can update the nighlies directly from ROM manager without doing any wiping. You just can't use ROM manager when getting to CM7 for the first time.

DO NOT use cf-root to install CM7. It's stated by Codeworkx a lot of times in CM Q&A thread. Just flash his kernel to get cwm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693
Now you have the original cwm recovery (from Koush). Boot into recovery, Wipe data, cache, dalvik.
Install CM7 twice in a row without rebooting.
Then flash gapps (without rebooting) http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip.
Now reboot. Wait for a few mins since system has to build dalvik cache. And you're all good to go
Worried about yellow triangle? Get a usb jig.
Siyah kernel 2.0 supports CM7 and miui. So....have fun.....!!

[Q] problems with ClockWorkMod in Galaxy I9100

Hi
I have a SGSII (i9100) which I have successfully rooted (all "permission" files work ok through Superuser). However, I don't seem to be able to install Clockworkmod or, if successful, then I can't boot normally.
When I try to install CWM via Odin3, it installs ok, but the phone then hangs on the triangle screen. I can boot into the CWM screen where it tells me that it cannot mount to system nor to the cache. Any attempt to reboot normally fails (i.e. it hangs on the triangle screen). Thanks to a kind member helping me, I have been able to recover each time by using the I9100XXKI3.ZIP package.
I have also downloaded Rom Manager and tried to flash CWM from there. That says that it has been successfull, but when I then boot to the recovery, it tells me that "E:failed to verify whole-file signature and e:signature verification failed". Consequently, no CWM, just the usual recovery screen.
Am I missing something? Can someone help, please? At the moment I have root, but can't install any custom roms.
Thanks, masterpointer

First thing rom manager is not compatible will the sgs2, second thing it's confusing when you say you restore a .zip as this is done via cwm? In order to get recovery via odin you need to be using an appropriate rooting kernel. When you did manage to get into cwm did you wipe cache and delvik etc?

I take your point regarding Rom Manager. but that aside, I have flashed CWM via Odin3 onto a rooted kernel and it does install, but phone hangs (freezes) on the triangle screen. I have tried several versions of CWM an several rooted kernels. They all install and they all freeze!

Boot in recovery, mount and storage, format system, data, cache. Pull battery out, after 2 min put it back, boot in download mode, start odin, flash stock rom, reboot, reboot again in download mode, then root with cf root kernel. Should solve you problem

I don't have "mount & storage" in recovery. Only Reboot System, Apply update from SD card, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.

You need to install a cwm rooted kernel .
Root + CWM .

yes, but therein lies the problem:
After I use cf-root (with KI4 kernel), the phone hangs (despite Odin3 showing everything ok)! And when i then boot into recovery, it says "e:failure to mount \system" and several massages "e:falure to mount \cache\..." and attempts to "mount" the listed items, all fail.

Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Followed by root .

Thanks for your help, but as I said previously, I was unable to do any of your suggestions because as soon as I installed CWM, I was unable to mount the system and the cache.
However, since then I did some further research and came across a forum where several others had the same problem and one of them tried to use "Speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-21-Odin.tar" and, lo and behold, that worked for me as well!!!

Cyanogenmod 7 Very Annoying Bootloop

So I bought my new galaxy s2 (i9100 int'l version) and i flashed a stock rom that matches my carrier and country (israel) and then i rooted it
by using CF-Root kernel, now i have it for over a month and i flashed many roms with success and then when i tried to flash cm 7 from stock i got into an endless bootloop.
now if you need to know how i flashed it so here you go:
flash stock rom (2.3.5) with ODIN
flash CF-Root kernel that matches my rom (KJ1)
move the official cm 7 (cm-7.2.0-galaxys2.zip) install file onto my internal memory
reboot into cwm recovery with 3 button combo
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe delvik cache
install zip from internal SD TWICE just to be sure
and then when i reboot with the "reboot device" option i get stuck on the galaxy sii screen
note: after i flashed the zip twice i also tried to reboot straight into cwm from the advanced tab and it still got stuck in the bootloop.
also when im in the bootloop i cant get into cwm with 3 button combo but i can get into download mode and i have been reading that when a thing like this happens it means its a NAND rw corruption
so does it mean i can never acomplish successfull installation of cm 7 on my device?
If you would have corrupted nand rw, you couldn't flash stock firmware with success.
Why don't you try CM9/10?

can the problem be envolved with that fact that im flashing the rom from the internal sd card?
cause i saw some videos that people were installing cm 7 onto thier devices from the external sd and it worked for them.

Are you sure you have I9100 or do you have I9100G? Try flashing CM9 or CM10 and report if you face similar issues.

[SOLVED]SGS2 issues upgrading to Jelly Bean

Hello, I hope this is the right group.
I have spent the last 2 days trying to get JB working on my SGS2. I previously had ICS Hydra h2o 1.4.1 ROM on my device.
The troubles started when I tried booting into CWM recovery. The phone wouldn't go past the yellow triangle so I had to use ODIN to flash stock Samsung ICS ROM on the phone to get it working again. I have since tried multiple JB ROMs with different kernels but most of them get past the yellow triangle but then stop on logos varying between kernels. I am also unable to boot into CWM recovery and must flash a CF-Root kernel using ODIN to get into recovery.
It is strange that this happens only with JB ROMs and I have no trouble installing Hydra h2o again through recovery.
I always use the same method of installing ROMs through CWM:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- install .zip from sdcard
I have also tried fixing permissions before and after flashing ROMs, nothing seems to get me into the OS.
One ROM, Vanilla RootBox, I have found to sometimes boot all the way into the OS but the system frequently freezes and is unstable. Looks amazing tho.
Do you have any ideas on how I could get JB ROMs working with my SGS2? Is there anything I am missing?

Follow this:
-boot to CWM recovery
-wipe data /factory reset
-wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
-format /system (under mount and storage)
-flash ROM
-flash Gapps (for jelly bean)
-fix permissions
-reboot phone
Done
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
Thank you for the reply, but that method does not seem to work either.
One thing I have noticed though is when I select wipe data/factory reset it reports an error formatting /sdcard/.android_secure.
Is this something that could be causing my problems?

When I'm flashing I'm using XLPB kernel with CF-root. That's the kernel I flash to get into CWM when the ROMs misbehave.

try this.
after flashing Cf-root kernel from ODIN.
1) flash the .zip file of siyah kernel v3.5.2 for S2, dwnld the same Here.
2)after that reboot into siyah kernel recovery.
3) wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache and dalvik.
4) flash the JB rom zip file(Vanilla root box).
5)reboot ur phone and see.
ps- before doing wipes and rom flash do please backup ur exsisting rom once ur into siyah kernel recovery first

Gives me Kernel panic or stops at the triangle loading screen. Seems the only way to get into CWM is through CF-root.

Use a newer version of siyah or dorimanx, they should work fine
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I have tried three versions of syiah, including 4.1.4 but I will try dorimanx and report with the results.
edit: dorimax kernel is the same.
One thing I noticed tough is whenever I wipe dalvik cache the system reports "unknown volume for /ext-sd blablabla" - maybe this is connected to my problem?
I am at a complete stop...
No JB kernels seem to work whatsoever. Is there any wit to flash the bootloader? Or is that even possible?
I really would like to get JB working on my device.
There must be something about the previous state of my phone, some files or folders that are in the way or are missing or somewhat. Is there any way to completely reset the phone? Not just factory resetting it since that is not working.
edit: Progress! These are my steps:
- Downloaded fresh stock Samsung ROM and another version of CF-root.
- Flashed stock ROM and then CF-root kernel.
- Booted into recovery and did the whole wipe.
- Flashed .zip twice (don't know if that did the trick or what)
- Wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions.
After that the phone booted normally and I'm now running ResurrectionRemix with Android 4.1.1, hoping it wil be awesome as ****.
