have galaxy tab 10.1 and rooted and installed "IN PARIS V4" and was looking to try out the overcome 10.1 series v. 1.2.1; first off, any recommendations or personal preferences by users here...which is better, more functional, etc. just looking for opinions here, truly appreciate the effort all individuals go thru to better our experience.
also, can i just boot into CWM from "IN PARIS V4", do a wipe of cache, dalvik, reset and install overcome 10.1 series or do i need to go thru the factory reset settings detailed in the overcome 10.1 series install.
obviously i would do a nandroid and titanium backup before.
thoughts and comments greatly appreciated.
thanks
To answer your first question in 2 ways: a) personal preference - In Paris v4 is my current ROM of choice. b) Which is better - better is subjective and device-dependant. The only way for you to really decide is install all ROMs that interest you and then use them 'in anger' for 4-7 days and decide if it's fast/stable/skinned enough for the way you use your Tab.
Some people have Tabs that are ok with In Paris but don't handle pershoot's kernel, others don't like the In Paris skinning, and some prefer a stock Honeycomb experience.
Secondly, if you're changing ROMs, it's always advisable to do a 3x wipe (factory reset, cache clear, dalvik cache clear) before installing if you want to avoid issues.
When restoring with TiBu, only restore user apps, not system ones, to avoid problems.

Hi everyone!
I recently started messing around with some new kernels and themes but I find some wierd things happening when I go from one to another, so this is just my way of asking: "Is there any specific folders to wipe when in recovery mode before flashing a new kernel and new themes..?"
Until this point I don't know what the different "wiping" categories in recovery mode are for, only that they wipe a different section of the settings and applications on the phone.
I would be very thrilled if someone could explain what they each are for (what part of the system they wipe). I'm running Amon-RA 1.7.0.1 in case someone would wonder
Thank you very much in advance!
Kernels won't need a wipe in my experience. Usually same for themes, though potentially could need a dalvik cache wipe. Check with your themer for clarification if needed
Is it only the Dalvik cache that needs wiping between roms as well?
Between roms, you usually need to wipe data. Check with the dev. When going between devs, data almost always needs wiped.
Sorry I'm a noob and couldn't find a clean answer. I'm coming from iPhone where I just mastered jailbreaking and all that good stuff and now starting over on a way better device.
I'm running UnNamed v1.0.1 and I want to upgrade to v1.0.3.
Do I need to do #4 "4) Select "wipe data/factory reset"" if I'm upgrading and will I need to do it for future upgrades (hopeful there will be some)
Thanks

In theory you do not have to do a "wipe/factory reset" if upgrading from 1.01 to 1.03,
however for best results I would advise you to do a full fresh clean install using the
"wipe data/factory reset" option.
If you have really a lot of apps and games installed you can always do a titanium backup.
Most people do not have tons of apps and games installed so it's usually very easy and
fast to simply reinstall apps, doing fresh clean install can also avoid many problems too.

Misterjunky is correct, It is always a good practice to follow the OP to the fullest extent.
But I upgraded from Cog to UnNamed, no factory reset and was fine. ymmv though
bottom line is that if the dev released a 'non-wipe' update to their ROM, you dont need to wipe your device. But keep in mind that if you get weird issues after upgrading, you might want to wipe your device and start over. I always feel more comfortable starting from scratch, but thats just me.
Thanks for the advise guys. I'll wipe n start over
BACKUP B4 Install!
Just to add to all the good information above...BEFORE doing ANY MAJOR revision or ROM changes ALWAYS do a Nandroid backup in CWM Recover (In Version 5.0.2.3 Main menu scroll down to Backup and Restore then Backup) It has saved many loads before as not all ROM installs go as expected the first run through as each phone is temperamental and tends to load differently sometimes. And also when restoring ANYTHING from Titanium Backup to a new ROM NEVER Restore System Apps as it change the integrity of the ROM's system files and could cause serious detrimental effects and many Force Closures. So Restore ALL Missing Apps with Data.
I just flashed UnNamed and after logging in to my Google Account it downloaded all the apps I had before wiping anyway. I didn't realize that was possible without using Titanium Backup or similar.
So if you use the Google backup (or syncing) it should download your apps after flashing as well.
Please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm still learning myself.

U.R. Right, however this method only works if you only download apps
from the market.
In the future if you ever find other sources to download apps from, google
will NOT backup or restore those apps.
Hi, i'm going to be trying the new ICS ROM that was posted today and i'm currently running Mirage. because of all the framework changes in the new ROM along with some other weird stuff that's come up, i'm going to do a full wipe.
now i already learned the hard way not to choose "wipe data" in recovery because it wipes the sd-ext. so i'll just choose the format options in mount/storage.
my question is, do i still need to back up the apps in TB, or will they all still be technically installed once i mount the sd-ext after installing link2sd.
just hoping someone that uses it can offer advice of the cleanest way to go about this.
thanks!
hi,
first off, apologies is this has already been discussed..
i have a sgs2 and have rooted it and installed miui, and then recently installed cyanogen 7.
im having signal problems and my data signal is also poor.
i also find my memory is cluttered with old app data.
i would like to completely remove all data off my phone and install a clean and reliable rom (any recommendations of the best one?). i would also like to update my kernel and firmware to the most reliable one.
can you please advise me on how to do so.
once again apologies if this is already been covered.
thanks
azam
Always use data wipe/factory reset option in CWR.
iv decided i want to go back to stock rom. what is the correct proccess?
Yeah just do data/reset or if u unsure ucan use
Moun then format data cache n system
check the sgs2 forums as there are some guides available and even some odin one-click restores which accomplish the task.
back up any data to pc/external sd and when you do a factory data reset in the rom chose format usb storage as that will clean off any other remnants you may be seeing.
Hi,
I would be very interested to know if I could upgrade my ROM without completely wiping /data. My only idea would just to be to backup /data before upgrading so I could just throw everything back on when I was done. I'm going to guess this is not possible, but just thought I would give it a shot. Thanks.
Hi
you mean what kind of Upgrades ? I upgade CM7.1 every week without wiping data
So like, lets say i wanted to go from cyanogenmod 7 to cyanogenmod 8...is there a way i could do that without wiping /user?

As long as the base OS is not a huge jump then upgrading custom roms is not always needed. If the OS version changes it is suggested due to possible code changes that effect settings and save data. TIBU gives you the best of both. Doing a full wipe to make sure no left over bugs and restoring your user apps and data. You do have to reset up your system settings but once it become habit you do it without thinking. Lol
I guess the root of the issue is the extremely large amount of applications I install on my device, it's a pain to re-download them, and it definitely does make sense to just be able to write over the existing ROM if there was not an extreme amount of changes.
