I wanna use the download feature on the rom manager app, but whenever I select "download rom" from within the rom maager app, it says I must install the cwm recovery. The thing is, I'm already using it, I guess the app just doesn't recognize that. Is it safe for me to continue and install the recovery (considering I'm already running it) or should I not, and forget about the app and the download feature altogether?

From what I understand and read, don't use rom manager with the Samsung Galaxy.

I'm pretty sure you still have to flash clockworkmod recovery from within RM first before you use it to flash ROMs. But.. I don't think any ROMs are available in ROM Manager other than CM7

Not true at all. In fact some Devs are recommending RM as an easier way to install their ROM.

Which devs? Not the ones on the SGS2 forums here. I believe every single one of them has advised AGAINST using Rom Manager to install anything. Use CWM recovery directly on the phone. Many people have reported problems trying to use RM. And since you are having a problem with it yourself....
Only very recently over the past day or so has ROM Manager become usable. CM7 is one of the ones that the dev is recommending to use it but up until just recently, it's been highly suggested to avoid using it at all costs.
I believe you can -download- roms off of RomManager. However, installing CWM from RomManager is not recommended, because it will cause an invalid signature error. Still flash CWM using the kernel found in the dev section.

- First time flashing CM 7 to your Galaxy S2 (or coming from another ROM)?
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)
- Upgrading from earlier CM7?
ROM Manager method:
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Samsung AT&T Galaxy S2.
Choose Download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Q: How do I go back to a Samsung stock ROM?
A: Just use ClockworkMod or ROM Manager backup/restore facility to go back and forth between stock (or any other ROM) and CM7.
Q: Can I use ROM Manager to install or back up this ROM?
A: Yes.

Phonic, not sure who your refering to when ypu say "every single dev".. there are only a couple.for SGSII- designgears for Cog and Atin for CM, and he already recommended RM so that leaves designgears as "every single dev" and I never said I was having an problem. I also mentioned in my post that CM7 was the only ROM that was available in RM for SGSII. As far as the other comment saying RM shouldn't be used for Galaxy s I guess I dont understand why. I've used it a lot before for CM7 and MiUi.. and now there are more ROMs available (SGSI)
Guys I wouldn't have posted this unless I knew for sure ROM Manager worked and has been used and also mentioned as a method to flashing. Its not fair to the developer for users to go around saying something doesn't work or is highly advised against using when that's not the case at all.
..just saying

I agree with what he said. I used rom manager to flash cwm after rooting and messed up my cwm. I had to reinstall stock rom and root again to fix it. since then I've read the development section not to use the rom manager.

I was just making a point that RM can be used and IS recommended as an easier method for flashing a ROM. It seems there is an issue with flashing recovery with RM... hmm looking in to it.

Right now it looks like the best way to get CWM on your phone is by flashing a kernel with it. Check the Development section. Should be near the top!

gotcha. i wish koush would do something about rom manager because the atrix also had a wipping issues on roms and he never fixed it
From my recent experience with the SGSII, the recovery is integrated into the kernel (unlike HTC devices which have a dedicated partition for it). My guess is ROM Manager can't flash it, since it doesn't have the kernel image.

Edit: so I've been running miui this week and see the app rom manager. I'm fine as long as i don't actually do anything through it correct?

It breaks and does weird crap - I've heard it works OK if (and only if) you are currently on CM7.
But since you're most likely using it to move to/from another ROM... Just three-finger into recovery or if the ROM has an extended power menu use that for recovery.
Its best to just use three-finger or the extend menu power menu like Entropy said. I've seen Rom manager mess up leading to a semi-brick phone.
Hey all,
First time poster and new to rooting.
I ended up attempting to use rom manager to load CWM right after root, but I think that borked my wifi.
What can I do if I've already used it? I did it because I hadn't yet seen all the xda threads on NOT using it, and the place I was was not as well informed as you folks.
Also, how do I get CWM if not via ROM Manager?
My brothers EVO was royally effed up from using ROM Manager. Became a paperweight until Sprint authorized a replacement.

Read through the FAQs and this thread - CWM is included in kernels that support it.

I ended up figuring most of this out so I wanted to close this out (for anyone that stumbles past my original post).
Here's what I did:
I uninstalled ROM Manager - but this didn't get the wifi going.
I reflashed with the stock ROM and unrooted kernel - this still didn't help.
I did a factory reset - this did manage to get it going.
I was able to track down a CWM standalone that I flashed it with (using Odin).
I followed that up with a root, a wipe, and then a fresh flash of UnNamed.
Phone seems to be working fine.

When I first rooted my phone I installed rom manager because it looked easier to just pick the file that u wanted flashed and it would do it for u, so u wouldn't have to play with the volume keys. But every time I tried to do anything with it, it just said certificate not found. Aborting. So u shouldn't use rom manager. I think it works with the roms that u download of the app but not ones from XDA.

If you're on CM7, ROM Manager can be used to install gapps - that's about the only thing it doesn't seem to choke on.

You cannot get CWM via ROM Manager - that is the point. It comes with certain custom kernels such as Entropy's DD kernel. If you do not have a CWM kernel - you will more than likly need to use Odin to get a kernel with CWM.
If you have totally screwed things up - look in the dev thread for "the return to stock" section and start over doing it the right way

Hi first post as well XDA forums so in depth and helpful decided I wanted to be apart of it. Still a noob though ill work my way up.
I am trying acheive the same goal he is, that is to say Instal the UnNamed (it is exactly what I want) Rom on my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
Keep it brief: Rooted my phone using root exploit:
it will not let me post link. the zergrush one
and bellow flashed clockwork mode using stand alone not ROM because of this forum. Model 5.0.2.6
I wipe catch, battery, then format everything. Then I start to flash the ROM. The installation begins. It cleans and formats everything again, then sais that there was an error in the file and it fails. After this if I dont restore my phone will not start. Ive tried it several times being even more thorough on procedure and its the exact same error every time.
Im just wondering if its the way I rooted it is incorrect, The CWM Im using is not the correct one, or if Im doing something wrong entirely. I think it might be CWM but I have not been able to locate one like he did that worked.
Any help, suggestions, criticism or advice would be very helpful. I just thought Id ask. thanks in advance ^^

UnNamed is not a Skyrocket ROM nor are any other ROMs in this subforum. You want to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1399
I am running the latest cm9 nightly. If I boot into recovery by using the power button reboot option, I get cwm 5.5.0.4 (from Entropy's DD kernel when I was on UnNamed). If I boot into recovery from rom manager, I get version 5.8.1.8. So apparently I have two different versions of cwm installed on my i777. Is this normal? I cannot seem to update the older version by flashing a newer version over it.

You can't update with it, you can't back up safely with it, you can't restore with it, and if you boot into recovery with it you WILL screw up the phone at some point.

Apologies then, but if it's flawless, then I'd be curious how it's dual-booting recovery. Maybe the question should go in the CM9 thread? Or just put it somewhere Entropy will notice - I'll bet he knows.

Yeah I'd ask Entropy for sure, he is the kernel master. The only thing I can think of why it is dual booting like that is, it is injecting it's own recovery that is associated with the app. SO when he boots through rom manager it gives him one recovery whereas booting using the button method gives him the cwm associated with the kernel. But as for working flawless, for CM9 you can download the newest nightly's, boot into recovery and flash all through the app.
Yes, I am sure Entropy knows why. I hope he or anyone who knows the topic notices this thread and shed some light on it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
Somehow, and I'm not sure why, RM is able to inject its own recovery.
This would be the first time in my entire history that it didn't inject a broken one.
I'm trying to understand the different roms that are available for the tablet but I'm overwhelming myself with information. I see from the posts I've read that there are several available from Gb to Jb but I'm trying to run down the one that isn't Gingerbread and is most stable with the fewest bugs. I understand from dropping roms on my Droid X that whatever I choose will not be perfect but I'd like to find a balance.
My follow-up question would be what is regarded as the best way to flash the rom to the internal memory of the tablet? If I try to reboot into recovery the nook crashes on reboot.
I'm running CM7 already but I would like to try other flavors.
Thank you for taking the time to read my posg.

I'll try to find the link later, but there's an app that flashes a functional emmc cwm recovery, or you can use goo manager to get TWRP. Also the most stable is chroffman's CM9 from with the 2.x kernel. That's what I typically use.

I really do appreciate the help. I've flashed the nook tablet recovery app but when I use it to reboot I just get a message that there's a problem and to contact barnes and noble

Then download goo manager from the play store, use that to install recovery, then use it to flash CM9, then use the app again to flash CWM. Then you should be fine. Then you can reboot straight into recovery, or use cyanoboot to load recovery.

So I have been trying to upgrade my LiquidSmooth to the most recent release (the 4.3 release), and I everything seems to flash correctly because I am able to boot initially and set up the phone, however when I reboot the phone it just stays on the "Samsung custom" screen and it does not boot. At first I thought it had something to do with my recovery, so I updated it (TWRP 2.6.3) and then I retried it. No dice. So then did some research and I found somewhere that updating the binaries might fix it. So when I flashed the ROM again I tried updating the binaries, but when it goes into recovery mode it starts updating them, but then stops in the middle and then goes back to the Samsung custom screen and then stays there.
Any ideas? Any at all would be awesome!
Also sorry if this has been answered already, I couldn't find anything on it when I searched for it.
Thanks.
Sorry, I'm not on that Rom, but, I've had pretty much the same problems as you. Twrp just wasn't getting it done. I also have goo manager (which uses twrp), so I went into recovery/twrp using goo manager. It worked. You might try installing goo manager from the play store and going into recovery from it and see if that works for you.

So you're saying I should use goo to go into my recovery and then flash the rom? Instead of going straight into TWRP by shutting off my phone and booting recovery? Or do you want me to flash the rom, boot it, and then update the binaries by using goomanager? Thanks!
Long story short. I soft bricked my phone the other day. Did the manual recovery with the buttons and installed a Nan droid backup. I later had trouble installing new/updates roms via twrp manager. I read about the problems with using twrp at times. One solution that was suggested was using goo manager, which I did. And, it did work for me the last couple of times.
Try it and see if it helps you out.
