data sometimes doesn't turn on without rebooting first - Optimus One, P500, V General

Here's an issue I've had for quite awhile, but it's been so intermittent I haven't taken the time to write about it until now.
Sometimes after I haven't turned on the "data" network on my phone for a few days, I'll find it won't turn on at all until I reboot the phone.
I don't use data that often, I just keep wifi on most of the time. The data allowance on my phone plan is extremely limited (only 100mb) so I keep it off unless I need it. Since I can go for days without turning it on, sometimes I'll find out that it just doesn't turn on at all (the box is checked but it doesn't connect) until I've rebooted the phone. Once it's back up it connects to the data no problem.
I've been on CM7 for the last month and GingerLOL before that, and this has happened on both ROMs. That makes me think it's a hardware issue, but I thought I'd check here first in case anyone else has had this happen to them. I'd also really rather not have to go through the trouble of setting the phone back to stock and unrooting it (that's possible, right?) before I make a warranty claim.
So, has anyone had this issue on their phone?

Thought I'd try bumping this thread since nobody responded to it the first time.
I've since upgraded to CM9 but the issue persists, if I don't use data for a couple days then it won't turn on. The toggle will say "on" but the icon never appears in the notification bar. Am I really the only one this happens to?
Does leaving data on drain power when you're using wifi?

[Q] Wifi connection gets disabled on sleep...

I have a GTab runn Vegan 5.1 and it runs great. The one issue that I have is that my Wifi gets disabled each night when it goes to sleep. When I say "disabled" I do not mean this it disconnect, but rather that something is actually putting it into a "Disabled" state and I must select the connection and choose to enable it.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be doing this? I have dug through every setting I can think of and also looked at any apps that might be doing this. I even went so far as to remove all my battery saving apps, but no dice.
Any suggestions?

Have the sleep policy set at never and this does not change anything. From what I understand this setting will disconnect wifi when the device goes to sleep. In my case the connection is not disconnected but rather completely disabled. So it seems that there is some other thing disabling the connection.
So, to give a bit more info here, I have installed wifi keep alive to try and save the connection. This keeps the wifi from being disabled when it is plugged in, but it still gets disabled when it sleeps and is also unplugged. (I.e. on battery and sleeping)
So, I am starting to think that the setting that fixes the problem while pluggedin is settings / applications / development / stay awake. I have this turned on and it seems that with stay awake and the wifi keep alive I am good when plugged in.
So, does anyone have thoughts for a similar setting when on battery power?
I can't help to much with battery power since I almost always have mine plugged in.
It's odd that not helping you, once I made that chance I stopped having my Wifi turn itself off (not sleep, off, and the tablet would need to be reset a lot).
Sorry that wasn't much help.
Having this problem as well. Anyone know how to fix?
If you notice other weird stuff happening in the future you may need to repartition your internal memory. Mine started with similar flubs and progressed to never remembering logins online. I had to login to xda every time I turned my device back on. Keep this in mind, about 30% of people need to reformat.

can you give some info as to how one would go about doing this?
For what its worth, might help to set a fixed IP address. I often got a problem with Wifi not being able to reconnect because it got stuck on "getting an IP address" and failed to do so. I seem to remember it disabled the connexion to that AP after too many tries on my Nexus One.
On my g tablet, I was having what seemed to be the same problem, so I did the same thing and it seems stable since. Granted I didn't toy with it as much as I did on the N1, but I wouldn't be supprised if it were a general Android problem.
Anyways, its free to try.
The wireless uses a lot of power. When the tablet "sleeps", it should go into a power saving mode. Disabling the wireless is a feature, not a bug.
Either way how can I keep the wifi signal on so when i wake my g tab up the wifi is ready to go and does not have to reconnect?
anyone have anything to help with this?
I am not sure, but it seems to me that downloaded apps can play with wifi this way, as long as they have rights to "access internet, modify and bla-bla-bla".
I am having same problem after sleep. And it was not present from the beginning. It may starts after I upload some app. I will play with this after coming back home.
yes please let us know thank you!

When my tablet is plugged in and it goes to sleep, the Wifi also disconnects, so I don't think this is a feature any more than the screen angle issue is a "privacy feature." I've never had an Android device that powered down connectivity when the screen goes off, that totally negates the notification features. You basically have a comatose tablet after a few minutes of the screen being off.
I don't think the Xoom or Galaxy Tab have this problem, so there's definitely an issue. Sadly, I might be sending mine back to TigerDirect as faulty because of this.
I have this problem too. As others have said, the problem isnt that the wifi turns off when the tablet sleeps. The problem is the last connected access point gets disabled so when you wake, you have to go into settings and tell it to connect again.
In my case, it happens most of the time, but not always. My Android phone doesnt have this problem.
I did a factory reset, then used nvFlash to restore, and then did a fresh install of Vegan (thought it did the same on every other 2.2 ROM I tried). I didn't install any apps, and the problem still occurs. Tried using Wifi Fixer, and the problem still occurs (though on the bright side, it does reconnect about 10 seconds or so after waking).
I'm out of ideas. I hate to send this thing back because it's the most fun piece of tech I've had in years, but a comatose Android device is a dealbreaker Going to try a GB ROM, and then I give up.
I've got the same kind of issue. I lose my PSA key in my wireless settings every time and have to re-enter it.
I installed the Vegan GB ROM (along with pershoot's kernel), and the wifi stays on if you choose "Never" for wifi sleep (you have to hit the menu button and choose "Advanced" when you're in the wifi settings). Only problem is, the GB ROMs, while zippy, are a little raw right now, and my Launcher Pro GMail widget doesn't work
I'm going to try one of the 2.2 ROMs again today along with pershoot's Froyo kernel to see if it makes a difference.
Ok, YMMV, but I am using Calkukin's ROM with pershoot's kernel (was using Clemsyn's before), with wifi set to never sleep, and my wifi doesn't sleep any more. I left my phone and tab here at work while I went out for lunch (felt naked ...), and came back about 45 mins later, woke the tab, and wifi was still connected, without that "looks connected, oh the icon is now disconnected, oh it's back again!" bit.
I still receive notifications and email, and widgets update. Guess I'm keeping it

[Q] Network goes in and out?

I've had an issue ever since I switched to Sprint and this phone.
Every once and a while the phone seems to loose connection to the network, but not tell me. My bars remain 3-5 and sometimes stay blue (sometimes they go gray). HOWEVER, all my Emails and Texts get backed up. They don't come through.
The first time I noticed I restarted the phone in the morning, and a ton of texts came through. Now that I've noticed I restart the radio ever so often if my phone goes a long time without any emails/texts and half the time stuff starts coming through again.
I think its the phone not the network though, any ideas?

I turn airplane mode on/off. Not sure if that's really "restarting" it but it fixes it faster than restarting the phone.
If I call tech support and ask them to update it they'll know what I mean right away?
EDIT: Also, what's the deal with this? Never experienced having to update my profile when I was with Verizon.

All of those types of settings are OK. No battery saving stuff. I called and the woman said she was "refreshing" something to my phone. We'll see if it works.

Screen keeps turning on automatically on MiniCM7-2.1.9 rom

I don't know if it's a bug or not, but when I turn off the display on my phone, it will automatically turn back on after a few seconds. I have no messages or alerts or any setting that I know of that does this, I just can't find a way to make it stop doing this.
Any ideas?
hardware problems would likely be the cause. my girls phone just did that a after a week went compltely blank. SE service center was the last option.
aww really? I did buy my Xperia X10 Mini Pro as a 2nd hand phone and it did have a few dents here and there so obviously it's been dropped on the ground.......but I was hoping it might've been a bug from the rom?
if its a u20i then could be flex which is costly. if its e10i then probably misaligned hardware which is cheap compared to replacing the flex.
it was around 15 NZD for fixing the misalinged hardware (double if it flex problem) but who knows could be a bug of the rom. try reflashing it and do factory wipe

Ya I have a u20i. What's a flex?
I did notice that there's this orange film thing under the USB port, it seemed slightly loose....
the flex is really hard to describe it. try to reflash it first. in that does not work then off you go to SE service center.
After a reflash, it seems to be working fine.
I think it only happens when I plug in the charger, even after unplugging it it would do that 'sometimes'.
BTW could u tell me what that orange ribbon under the USB port is?
sorry i i dont have any clue.
I think I found out what's causing this. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem because the problem always goes away after reflashing it.
However, after I setup my programs and settings, this problem starts to happen. I think it's because I enabled the "automatic brightness" setting. While it's enabled, the screen will turn on every few seconds at regular intervals. But if I disable it, the problem is gone.
So ya, i think it's a bug.
UPDATE:
Ok, the problem is still there. But at least it doesn't happen as much now. I really haven't changed any settings or installed any programs that could've caused this, as far as I know. I've used the same settings and programs on my other Android devices and never had this problem.

I've tried every suggestion, set wifi sleep policy to never, wifi is turned off (i can't even get it to work properly anyway, as mentioned in another topic I posted). I don't have WeatherBug installed, and since my wifi isn't stable and always drops connection, there's no point for me to sync my data so I unticked that option as well.
UPDATE 2:
Ok I've just noticed that everytime this problem occurs, the screen will turn on 3 times, and then stop doing it for a while, and repeat.
I'm guessing it's doing this because I have unread messages and it keeps showing that under the notification? I use GOSMS PRO and used Titanium Backup to freeze the stock Messaging app, so now I unfreezed it and marked all messages as read, as well as disable the notification in the Messaging settings. I hope this does the trick.....
Sorry for such a long post, but can someone tell me what exactly does this do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20759383&postcount=2
like, what happens if you change it to a large value compared to a small value? I'm thinking maybe it could be this, as you can also change the settings for the display as well. BTW, this setting wasn't enabled by default, so I dunno if that's the cause or not......

I also had the same issue but was able to get it to stop by doing the following.
- Turn off automatic brightness
- Under advanced settings for wifi, click "Keep wifi on during sleep" and select "never".
Hope this helps some of you.

It turns out it was a hardware problem on my fone. I got a new one and haven't had any problems since. Try upgrading to newer CM7 versions, or try out CM9. If not, then go back to stock, coz I've never had any problems on stock even when I was still using my faulty xperia pro.

i have the same problem after installing 2.2.1. i don't know if they are connecting but for me in this version it doesn't work wifi policy ''never''. every time my phone is idle wifi turns off.
I had the same problem with 2.1.9, then i upgraded to 2.2.1 but the problem was still there, so i analyzed the problem and got the obvious solution, i uninstalled the ram booster app i had and problem solved!! So if you have any ram booster, or task manager or killer or something like that try uninstalling it or changing the settings in that app, i hope to be helpful
i don't have something like that but after a long time i use data and not wifi for internet. i thing that this is the problem

Push Notifications Don't Work With Screen Off (Gmail, Talk, Voice, etc.)

Recently I disabled the best wi-fi performance option (I enabled it on accident while messing around with settings on launch day) which obviously increased my battery life dramatically by actually allowing my phone to go into deep sleep. But now I hit a new issue.
Before I go on, I want to state that I DID apply the SmartSync fix and that my data IS working while my phone is in deep sleep.
New emails I receive with Gmail app do not get pushed to my phone as they should. They are anywhere from 5-15 minutes late if they even show up at all. If I happen to turn my screen on, automatically I get the notification of new emails.
Is anyone else having this issue with Gmail or any other app? I find it strange that while I have data (wi-fi/3g) enabled and working with the screen off, emails still come in delayed.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched around and most of the answers I came up with (regarding HTC devices like the One X) had to do with SmartSync messing up the connection or someone not having the notifications enabled. I'm at a loss 0.0
EDIT: I tested this with Google Talk had my main account up in Gmail and in another browser windows my other Gmail account. Added both of them, talked to my self, if my device screen was off, I would either get it 1-2 minutes late or not at all. Once I turned my screen back on, the notifications poured in. I also tried the same scenario with my main Gmail account logged off (in case it was canceling out the messages to my phone, which it wasn't) and I had the same outcome. I edited the title to reflect that this isn't a Gmail only issue.
EDIT 2: Did more tests, I tried turning Wi-Fi off completely and running the same tests as above to my surprise everything worked as expected. I initially thought it might be because of my 5Ghz Wi-Fi band, so I tried it all again on my 2.4Ghz channel -- had the same problems as before. Somehow the issue pertains to your screen being off and Wi-Fi being on.
EDIT 3: I just tried streaming Pandora and shutting the screen off (maybe WiFi WAS somehow shutting off) Pandora kept playing no problem. I messaged myself on Talk, got the notification right away. This is very bizarre 0.0 But it might confirm this only happens when the phone is in deep sleep mode... Still doesn't answer why it doesn't happen on 3G or why notifications sometimes still come through.
EDIT 4: Still no fix but I have discovered that for some reason if the screen is off ANY data doesn't go through. Let me explain better:
If I have some thing like Pandora running then it will continue to run once I shut my screen off. But if WiFi isn't being used and I turn my screen off and then lets say I try to connect to it with Cerberus or ping it from my PC or something it will not even though the router reports it as connected.
Very strange behavior.
This is interesting...maybe the wifi performance toggle is associated to the smartsync, and all?.....I will say that with it unchecked I am getting some really really good battery life here compared to previous phones....but I also notice at times when emails are not pushed till I wake the screen during the day....Also the fact my wifi doesn't automatically reconnect to my house when I get back from work till I wake the screen...little things like that...
Havent messed with the best performance setting but will try it today now...

Have it, and it is unchecked. That's the weird thing, wi fi doesn't actually turn all the way off because SOMETIMES I do get the push notifications (late, however).

Issue continued overnight, tried various other things and nothing seems to fix it. I want to get my notifications but I don't want to destroy my battery life xD is anyone else having this issue?

I have the same problem on my 2nd evo as well after returning the 1st. Going to try a rom with the fix tomorrow. I'll report back with what I find. Hopefully I won't have to return again....

It's definitely not a hardware problem because if that was the case the phone wouldn't work with wi fi almost at all. My wi-fi connection is rock solid even when the screen is off, just for some reason it won't notify I have the messages until the screen gets turned on.
I did some tests on my gf's stock phone and she's having the same issues, I told her to do some tests on her parents wi-fi when she goes there. I wonder if sgt slaughter has any news.
Btw if you definitely need them on time and need to be on wi fi but don't care about battery life that much just enable best wi fi performance.

Actually more like a Smart Sync break ... The built in settings/app put your data connections to sleep when your phone goes to deep sleep; this is done to save battery when phone not in use for extended period.
Some folks hate losing the data connections so a flashable "fix" is available for the "problem" ... Look around; you'll find it

its a sense problem, there's a thread in the one x forums on how to fix it. I'll post when I get home if I can find it. it shuts down to a 'power save' mode after a while plus after midnight or 11 or something.
Just wanted to update that I installed a custom rom that contains the WiFi fix mentioned and although my WiFi doesn't seem to drop how it did before (at least after one day) my notifications are anywhere between 4-10 minutes late on average through WiFi. This seems to be across the board for Exchange email, Gmail & Google Voice.

Yes my setup also had the wi-fi fix, I can even see my phone connected to the router when the screen is off, the connection is strong.
I had a suspicion it was probably the basic transfer rate of the browser and for some reason I could not adjust this on my fancy 100 dollar router with dd-wrt flashed onto it so I set up a repeater with my older router on stock settings. It seems like the notifications are coming through better now (albeit not instantly) but at least I don't have to turn my screen on every time. It might be a placebo effect or just luck (because at times it does work even with my other router).
EDIT: Ignore the italicized sentence. It was just a stroke of luck, the problem came back.
I'm out of ideas at this point xD
I am having a similar issue as well.
I am rooted and running Fresh Evo LTE 5.1.1 which has the "Disabled SmartSync deep sleep mode" already installed. I also leave my WiFi off (for the same reason as the OP outlines - messages are just plain not arriving or if they do it's after I turn the screen on).
I use gtalk as my primary form of communication on my phone and what seems to be happening is messages from my two closest friends are never arriving. It's hit or miss but seems to be ~45mins after my screen turns off that they send a message and I never get it. One is on Sprint on my family plan and the other is on Verizon. The weird thing is that if I look in my gmail > conversations the messages aren't there either.
I haven't been able to verify any SMS messages that I haven't received but I have noticed that my email notifications seemed a bit wonky but this issue may be fixed with changing my "push" hours (which is retarded to have factory set to only push email between 8am - 8pm).
Question for the smart kids in the class: When does the phone reach "deep sleep"? Is it around ~45mins after the screen turns off?

I also have the dual core mod which I BELIEVE sets my deep sleep right away which is probably why I have the problem more often than you do. One question just so we can start gathering facts large scale, if you're on 3G do you have the problem still? What if you turn 'best wi-fi performance'?

Correct - I have this problem on 3G. I run on only 3G because the problem is more prevalent on WiFi, but still very common on only 3G.
Currently I have "best wifi performance" turned off. Do you want me to test with it on or off?

On. When I turn it on it pretty much eliminates the issue, it acts just like 3G. But for me 3G is almost perfect (a couple seconds of delay but I can deal with that). Remember though that if you leave it ticked on it will destroy your battery life.
WiFi is on, best WiFi performance is on as well.. I'll run it this way a couple of days and see if I can replicate the problem.
I just wanted to say that I've been having similar issues. I have tried turning on best wifi performance, but I don't think that is helping. For one thing, when I have that turned on, when I wake the phone, the wifi is often times not connected, and it shows 3G. Then it will connect to wifi shortly after I wake the phone. On top of that, I'm still not getting notifications on time. I was notified of an email when I woke the phone that actually came in 10 minutes earlier. Hopefully HTC/Sprint is aware and working on a fix.
Still no fix but I have discovered that for some reason if the screen is off ANY data doesn't go through.

WiFi disconnecting when screen is off

I'm trying to figure out if my Edge is bad. When I turn the screen off, and come back to the phone a few minutes later, I'll get a notification stating it has connnected to my router. I've checked the settings and it states the wifi is set to be always on. I attempted a factory reset and still no luck. Sometimes it'll take a few moments before it even connects to the wifi again upon turning the screen on.
Do I have a bad phone?

I would check under the advanced settings for wifi, there's an option for what to do with wifi during sleep. That may be your problem.
I've already checked and it''s enabled.

I have the same thing happening. I noticed when I was backing pics on one drive
. It would always say that back up has stopped because there was no WiFi After turning the screen on again.
I just got my Edge yesterday, and I am having the same problem with wifi AND also that it stops seeing any wifi and I have to toggle it off and back on manually THEN it will instantly connect to my known network.
Dear @vaxick,
Dial *#0011# and click on more>>WiFi>>"WIFI Power save mode" try to disable this option and see what happens.
*it might drain your battery faster.

Thank you for this suggestion, unfortunately it had no effect as I have observed the same wireless disconnect behavior now with both the WiFi power save both on and off. Once the wireless disconnects it no longer see ANY wireless networks no matter where I go until I toggle the wireless off then back on again. Then it will see all wireless network present around me and instantly connect if there are any of my saved networks present. At this point I believe it is either a hardware or worse a software problem with my phone, but I am really at a loss to the exact nature of this issue.
Mine also has this issue when connected to 5GHZ SSID. Connecting to my 2.4GHZ SSID solves this problem completely for me

I hope that this is a hardware issue with my phone, as your "solution" is totally unacceptable for me, especially since my work place has bandsteering AP's that use the same SSID's for both 2.4 and 5GHz.

Yeah, i have to turn WIFI off whilst at work for the same reason. Certainly hoping it's just a software bug and will be fixed quickly as it is by no means an ideal workaround
I also see this kind of problem since last 1 week, here is how i noticed. i user viber messaging app and it shows status online if you are connected. Lot of my friends started complaining that my status is not continuously online and fluctuating so i started doing tests.
Moment my display turns off i started counter and in 10 minutes my status changes as last seen and whenever i open viber app again i am online.
second test: i tried doing the same with whatsapp and connected at web.whatsapp.com and same thing happens within 10 mins i see yellow bar appearing that my phone is disconnected so again i have to open whatsapp on phone to reconnect.
this is very annoying to see this kind of problem on new phones, especially when old phones are working flawless.
Kind of the same problem, but with GPS. Once I disabled the battery saver mode, it stopped disconnecting. Have you tried that?
Are you referring to power saving mode in battery settings. i did check and they are turned off. No idea what else i am missing here.
I tried re-installing viber but still after 10 mins its keep disconnecting.

I'm having the same issue on my regular non edge s6. This settings is not doing anything have it on always still always drops the wifi when going to sleep. Its driving me crazy no idea why its doing this
i did check and i have Keep WiFi on during sleep >> Always option but still drops, no clue whats wrong with my phone.
I had the same issue and solved it by changing my routers security from WPA2/Mixed Mode to WPA2 Personal. Since this change, it works fine on both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz.

I received my Galaxy S 6 edge a week ago and I am having this same peculiar reconnecting issue to WiFi that has been described here.
Solution?
I was having this same issue and was unable to find any good solutions for it online, but eventually found something for me that worked through experimenting:
Find the above mentioned "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" option (which is probably set to "Always" already), change it to "Never", and then change it back to "Always". Since doing this I haven't had it disconnect from the wi-fi once, where as before it would do it everytime the screen had been off for a few minutes.
The problem started happening sometime after I played with power saver mode, so I think it might be related to that. I know that the software has some other bugs related to power saving mode, as I had a previous problem where my softkeys stopped vibrating or lighting up, which ended up being related to not exiting ultra power saving mode correctly and was fixed by going re-enabling ultra power saving mode and exiting again.
