[Q] How do you create a folder on a honeycom home screen? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was rather shocked to learn that my galaxy tab 10.1 tablet, running Honeycomb (3.1) does not support the ability to group home screen shortcuts into folders. Nor does it seem to provide a stock widget that could be used for organizing shortcuts.
Coming from iphone & iPad, both of which have long supported folder functionality, this is a huge surprise and my only big disappointment with Honeycomb.
I have found 3rd party apps that can help this (Folder Organizer), but this App is overly complex for the given task. If anyone can recommend an app that does nothing but simple iOS-like folder organization, that would be great. (I realize there are many alternative launcher/homescreen repplacements that support folders, but would rather not broaden the discussion that far for now).
I find it embarrassing to have to explain to iPad users that Honeycomb does not have anything like folder organization for apps built-in to the OS. Is this a design "feature" of Android? Does Google prefer another method for organizing home screen icons? Is it coming in future release?

Yeah unfortunately this quite basic feature didn't make it into Honeycomb, however it is definitely present in ICS (4.0) - and the automatic grouping of icons looks awesome!

To begin with, you needn't be embarrassed -- your tablet has many features and functionality out of the box that the iPad / iPhone will NEVER have. On top of that you can add further UI functionality (like in this case folder support) even if Google left it out.
The next update to Android (ICS) does include folder support in the same manner as the iPad / iPhone, but till then "Folder Organizer" or an alternative launcher are the only way to do this. Note that both of these options are way more powerful than iPad / iPhone's folder support.

Well unlike IOS, you can use 3rd party folder apps. I'm currently using Folder Organizer (more functions than IOS folders), but there are lots good ones in the Maket.

Thanks. I'm looking for plug in / addon / tweek to do so as easy as 123. Drag and drop! Like ios does...
Is ICS released.

If you use a launcher like adw launcher, I think it adds the folder capability.

Yes, ADW can group apps in folders.
ICS has pretty amazing folder arrangement programming (saw it on the live stream from hong kong last night). We will probably getting ICS on our galaxy tabs (nobody knows when yet) based on the fact that the only devices with ICS right now are Samsung just like our tabs.
...Wrong section. Should be in Q&A.

I use an app called Application Folders from the Market. It has everything you are looking for.

This is a little personal project I created to replace Windows Mobile default Date plug-in. You probably don't need this if you are already using HTC Home, BatteryStatus, rlToday or similar time plug-ins. Anyway, I thought I do share it with you guys here as well.

Thank you very much! It looks beautiful in Axim X51v.
By the way.. is there any way to avoid showing the seconds in the clock? I´d like to see only the hours and the minutes.
Anyway, it´s a great and very light application.
Super nice clock! Thank you for this GREAT CLOCK!!!!!!
I want this with the messaging icons (email, missed calls, text messages, and maybe a voice mail counter)
This looks great! I've been looking for a clock that included seconds.
Great Job, thanks!!!

Goodbye Htc Home.
I was using Sm Digital clock but I think this is better.
Thanks for this gift.
And don't assume people don't need it because they have htc home; I used it for months but got tired of the screen estate it occupies and considering that I have spb plus, the other tabs of htc home were just redundant (personal preference, I guess).
Keep up the good work.
nice job going to try it out
the ability to have a folder we can change the fonts on the go, and the color of the fonts wold be great. something like the HTC customizer they have...or would that work with this?
Hello pocket digital clock, goodbye htchome...

This is a great, simple, low overhead clock app. Just what I have been looking for...
One thing:
Any possibility you can build a custom font for the popular SegoeUI TTF that is being implemented in a lot of the 6.1 ROMS?
Thanks again!!

I too would like this although I know it is much to ask for. Maybe theres a separate program that could be used in conjunction with this that shows the counters?
Wow. I didn't expect this much replies. Thanks for all the support.
As for those who wish for more specific arrangements and functions, I would recommend rlToday, which is extremely customizable. But of course, customizability comes with higher overheads. At this point in time, I do not have plans to formulate too many designs. I'm afraid there will be no further updates unless there is a critical bug.
brock1909, initially, I made this program with a folder of its own and with the ability to change fonts on-the-go. Unfortunately, there is a well-known Windows Mobile bug that lets registered fonts outside the Windows folder take over fonts in other non-related programs. The same thing happens if you place fonts under the \Windows\Fonts\ directory. It was discussed in the forums of phoneAlarm and rlToday where custom fonts are often used with skins. Eventually, I had no choice but to adopt the current design.
By the way, font color will change based on your Today Theme.
As for Segoe UI font request, I'll make this an exceptional case since I like the font as well. However, because I do not know what are the legal implications of using such copyrighted materials, I will not place them on my custom font page.
P.S. Segoe UI is optimized for ClearType. It won't look good if ClearType is disabled.

[BRAINSTORM] [IDEA] Cyanogenmod Universal Improvements

In an attempt at obfuscation I thought I'd start a thread in hopes of getting some collaboration for improving my favorite Android ROM-- CM6. Sure I could stick with AOSP for better universal support but who cares? CM6 offers what I consider the best experience and the available code far surpasses what we would need to reinvent on a stock base.
Lack of time and knowledge has me realizing it's best to try to bring the community together so we can work on adding features in a hopefully less 'throm' way. Seeing advancements devs can do like MIUI's lockscreen and interesting home screen improvements, features we enjoy from the CM6 nightlies, etc. is the motivation.
I'll post my work and ideas and I'm hoping people do the same.
List of ideas and projects I'd like to get going:
Notification bar scrollable settings
MIUI and the new Sense inspired idea but taken to a new level with custom activity support similar to Bettercut and ADW offer.

Universal Firefox-style Google search from long-pressing text
Long press text in a web page, email, text box and have a context menu to search the phrase on Google similar to Firefox. It's a Google OS, let's add it
Smooth screen rotation transitition
Intercept rotation and instead shift the screen rotation without redrawing to improve speed on low end devices and prevent onResume() potentially wiping current saved state in poorly coded apps
This is a think tank and I hope to spin it into a development thread. I'm open to ideas like a Home button in browser, etc. Let's make this easy, open source and available for integration in ROMs to make things better for everyone.

The one thing I've always wanted fixed in Android (since 1.0) is Artist sorting in the music player. Currently the scanner incorrectly uses the Artist tags for combination albums and splits them all up (should use Album Artist; check how iTunes/WMP sorts this stuff); its terribly annoying and has needed to be fixed for ages.

My 2 Cents
Sense like copy /paste In browser
Getting that search drop down on xda to not dissapear when I try to type in eing
Getting the gmail app to auto call phone numbers when you touch it, sense does this
When searching In google, the suggestions come up, I would like to be able to scroll to one of the suggestions, and this auto fills the search box for you, like it does in a desktop browser
Cm has thought of almost everything I must say though!
Here's an idea i'd like to see. I dunno if it should be implemented in Android in general or CM.
If you pull down the notification bar, swiping left or right to get another page with some of your widgets... OR switch between open applications using that.
On the lock screen an option to show currently playing artist and song would b nice

Better Lockscreen Needed for Android

I'm reposting this from another thread I was in, but I wanted some general thoughts from the community.
One thing I think that iPhone does better is the lockscreen. I know Apple stole the notification bar from Android, but they do a better job with the lockscreen.
I can't figure out why Android won't put more information on the lockscreen. Info like text messages, who called me when (missed calles), email.
I used an app on the iPhone that was nice, the Lockinfo program. It required a jailbreak, but it was cool. http://www.lockinfo.net/ It was really nice.
I've tried a few alternatives in Android, but nothing seems to work quite as smooth. I've tried widget locker + pure messanger. Wasn't a smooth experience.
Thoughts?
I actually find the iPhone lockscreen to be quite cluttered. I recently came from an iPhone to a Nexus S i9020a and loving ICS so far and the great community.
I still have my iPhone but I've had times where I would get multiple notifications on the lockscreen and the entire screen is filled with clutter. First there's the date and clock area, then you got the bottom slide, then the middle gets filled with notifications. I find it bothersome actually. I much prefer the lockscreens on Android and Windows Phone.
I guess I enjoy seeing my background more than who called or contacted me. I can see that when I go into the app itself.
I guess its a personal preference to what you would like in the lock screen. However all your notification do appear in the notification bar.
Try MiLocker
Actually, Android has a much larger variety of what you can have on your lockscreen. I've had simple setups that just show missed calls and texts. I have my current setup that shows missed calls, texts, new emails, and allows me to go directly to those as well as music, camera, and home screen from the unlock slider.
If you run MIUI you can also run a setup that not only shows current status updates but also gives you a preview of the most recent. Take a look: http://gadgetdesire.blogspot.com/2011/12/miui-theme-slidescreen-ls.html
Bottom line is you can have as few or as many updates as you like on Android, just a matter of your preferences.
And if you want something simple to use with android search the web for txtmissed. Great app, just no longer under development.
TXTmissed on my old Widget Locker Screen. Takes you directly to calls log or default text service:

totally agreed. it would be nice to have a pop-up on LS when i have a missing call or a text.
MIUI rom will show you how android does with the lockcscreen, its never been better
Seconding MiLocker here. Didn't want full blown MIUI but the lock screen choices are pretty ridiculous in number. Been happy with it and it seems to be fully customizable.
you can use widget locker i think
i find it not enough configurable... i want to see my coming sms.
Maybe give GO Locker a try
Go Locker needs Go Laucher to work. Sadly

[Q] Unconventional Launchers?

I've grown tired of the regular android look of 4x4 icons, dock and widgets. I want a different type of launcher ( I wish i had the stock launcher for the kindle fire), but something that is very different, any ideas? P.s. I've tried launcher 7...
Rocket Launcher is pretty unconventional. Not my style, but check it out. http://goo.gl/JrCBb
I've tried it too, but it wasn't snappy enough, and limited customization. It was a great start though. thanks
Wave launcher: http://goo.gl/zMRW6
Best money spent on market other than Tasker. No, it's not an actual home screen but it's an excellent launcher!
If you are patient and persistent, Sweeter Home is real nice. It is in perpetual beta, and the dev isn't really supporting it, but you can find users here in xda.
I'm including a few screenshots. The right side has tabs that bring up boxes of user selected apps. This is my setup. Search for sweeterskins and see what others have done also. YouTube has a few videos.

One handy feature I forgot to mention is that you can show and hide settings switches and widgets as they are needed. You can see in my screenshot that my GPS widget comes into view when I am selecting a navigation app. This gives me a heads up on GPS status and a chance to activate if off. Up to 9 widgets can occupy the same spot and you can select which one is going to be displayed.

Pretty cool! I'm going to give that a go.
BTW, the home page is http://www.sweeterhome.com/, and they just released a new beta on 10 Feb 2012.

LauncherPro and Go Launcher aren't really that unconventional. Neither is ADW nor Nova, for that matter.
Btw, duckredbeard: what theme are you using with sweeter? Looks quite sweet!
It's my own theme...look for SD004. It will take some work to make it work for you as I have alot of Tasker and MinimalisticText going on. I will do some edits to make it more adaptable for others. Check back to this thread for updates on when it is available.

http://techcookies.net/top-10-features-id-like-to-see-built-in-into-android/
What do you think? Do I miss something?
Do you agree with my list?
Let's discuss!:
Up!
Are you just trying to divert some people to your personal blog to get more hits? XDA isn't a platform for advertisement.
Otherwise decent I guess, other than a few points not being "the norm" for most people (softkeys not on all phones, smart cover not needed on most phone but decent for tablets, screen rotation being just a 90 degrees rotation away).
I think the third party apps available fill the void quite well.

I'm trying to get some comments on my work.
Even if soft keys are not for all phones Google promote it a lot. All Nexus devices has soft keys.
I think smart cover is nice but maybe not really important. Screen rotation seems to me essential.
I don't want to have everytime to turn on and off the automatic rotation.
Anyway most of these features required root permissions and I think 99% of Android users don't even know what root is.
Do you agree?
the first one is actually built into 4.1.2, at least on samsung devices, just a fast swipe from the top and the statusbar appears

You could have copied your content here, anyway.
But no, I don't really agree. In the grand scheme of things, Google has to keep it pretty simple.
Per app rotation is complicated for the end user and furthermore some apps cannot be rotated because they weren't coded to be used in landscape/portrait.
As for the softkeys, there's more phones with dedicated physical keys than without. For the moment, I don't believe Google is pushing it much forward. If they wanted, they could make obligatory for OEMs to use software keys, but they haven't.
Theming is fun, but it's complicated and confuses the mass. That's why the theming without root is reserved to icons, wallpapers, sounds and such.
That's the beauty of Android though. Apps and mods to fill the gaps everywhere.
About soft keys maybe you are right : Google is not pushing that but it's teaching with Nexus devices.
The rotation can be implemented in the way it can take into account the apps manifest and allow users to do it when make sense.
Anyway this feature can be an advanced option.
Theming is probably the best one because actually you have to mess up with your phone to change battery icon or font. This features seems so basic to me.
What about screen recorder? Could it be nice to have like screenshoot?
If an app can do a work without root maybe it's fine but if it required root a lot of users will never have the possibility to use such a feature.

I'm sorry but I don't agree. These features are really nice to have but users are too scared from messing up the phone with root and custom rom.
