I set up my Google account in Motoblur and it downloaded my entire contact into my phone. With my iPhone, I can set it so it only imports those in the "My Contacts" group. I would like to do the same here since "All Contacts" stores every single email address I've ever communicated with.
I am mitigating this issue by turning on the filter for "only contacts with phone numbers" but I would like more control over this.
If Motoblur can't do this, how can I bypass it as have the Contacts app connect directly to my Google account?
Thanks!
Sadly. You can't do either. This is our fate with MotoBlur.
Just make, your own contact list put who ever you want in it select it under contacts then, it will pretty much be your main one

Yeah, but I want it to sync with Google Contacts.
There's an option in the contacts app settings menu to show only contacts with phone numbers.

Yup, thanks! That's what I'm using now and it is a lot better. But I was hoping for more control group-wise.

Unfortunately the Motoblur contacts app doesn't allow for the same level of control as the stock Android contacts app. I have asked about installing the AOSP contacts app but no one has told me whether it would work / what dependencies it has, and reading through the Cyanogenmod forums hasn't helped me figure it out (I'm no android developer).
And weirdly enough this option isn't available in the bell version.

I can't find any option for that in contacts either Can someone tell me where it's situated or the Bell version doesn't have it :/ And if there's a work-around if this is the case?
I just went into my contacts in the web version of gmail and starred everyone that I wanted in my phone contacts list. Then on my phone I just set the contacts to favorites and all that showed up was the starred contacts from gmail.

Awesome tip!
Why can't you change the default for your contact that you create on the phone to default to a Google contact instead of the phone contact? Does anyone know how this can be changed? I rooted my phone and lost a couple contacts that I had put in the phone because phone contacts don't sync to the gmail account. Glad I at least found this out early so I don't have a huge problem when putting a different rom on it in the future.

that was a really annoying "feature" of the samsung fascinate. I guess the only way around it is to use the AOSP contacts program. I will attempt to restore it from titanium backup and see if it works
it usually sets it as gmail right out of the gate when i'm creating contacts, etc...i find myself checking every once in awhile now anyways. it is truly annoying!

A) language
B) It's a feature of sense, therefore htc, not vzw, is to blame.
however, yes, annoying. One solution would be to export contracts to SD from phone, import from SD to google.
(you would have to keep doing this, but it's a good way to back up before wipe/flash.)

I did the same thing. I went into gmail and organized/updated all my contacts. So now all my phone contacts are Google contacts. Be sure to go into gmail and do a perge/merge of any duplicates. This makes porting contacts over that much easier.
What really annoyed me was the linking/suggested linking of contacts on the phone vs google vs facebook. After you centralize everything around your google contacts things become much easier.
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

I think if you create the new contact in your google account (vs on the phone) then it will sync up and everything will be OK.
I have to get into my google account contacts and clean up some stuff, duplicates, etc., that seem to appear every now and then.

That just changes which contacts show. I am talking about entering a new contact and letting it be a Google contact by default. I don't want to accidentally set it up as a phone contact which will not sync to your Google account.

I gotta say Contact Management with Android has been probably one of my biggest frustrations. I like the ability to sync my GMail contacts, that's easy enough. But between getting pictures and "linking" "synching" and "attaching" contacts via Twitter, MS Exchange, and other means... TO not being able to only populate mobile numbers when creating SMS/MMS's and such, it is just way more difficult than it should be.
It could and SHOULD be much simpler. Maybe I'm just a wii-todd, idk.. Either way, I feel your pain dude.
Ya so was I.... Maybe since u have a mixture it isn't working for u.....Export all your contact to Google then remove ur Google account from the phone then delete all ur contacts off ur phone then sync with Google and do the steps I posted before

So I've had this phone less than 24 hours and I want to get rid of it.
I have all my contacts in gmail and organized. Work, Businesses, Personal, etc.
The only way I can see my all gmail contacts is if I go under "All contacts". (But thats cluttered with every auto added email address for the past years)..
And select show only contacts with phone numbers. All I get is my own contact. WTF!
Now that I'm searching for it, tons of people are having this issue with no real solution..

If this is your only issue with the Atrix, I am sure there will be a solution somewhere for it, and you will find that it is an amazing piece of hardware, and you will reap the benefits.
Where have you looked for solutions so far?
I've tried just about every contact manager on the market with no luck..
I'd settle for seeing all my contacts with out grouping for now but can't even figure that out.
Theres a few other unrelated things bugging me.. I hate the sms iphone like bubbles, can't see how to disable them asides from a 3rd party app.
usb charging doesn't seem to work.
And I already had top do a battery pull to get the phone to wake once.

Below is a link to the contacts manager I use. 'Go Launcher EX Contacts' it works great for me, you can create as many categories as you want and name them whatever you what. Give it a try see what you think.
com.jbapps.contact.apk
Yea, I would also suggest trying out the GO Contacts app.
The only thing I don't like so far is that the GO wallpaper team steals code from freeware developers and tries to make money off of it :\
log into Gmail. go to your contacts. Delete all the entries under "other contacts" as that is where it stores all the email addresses you've sent email to over the past years, that aren't an actual contact that you've entered yourself.
Now go to Gmail settings. General Tab. In the option "Create contacts for auto-complete:", select the "I'll add contacts myself" radio button. That should solve your problem. or atleast some of them

I actually tried that this morning, didn't change anything when displaying only contacts with phone number.. I'm still the only contact it shows.
But alas I figured out what this stupid thing was doing!
It only shows google contacts that are in the "My Contacts" group. All of my contacts only belong to one group (Work, Personal, Etc). Putting them all in my contacts fixes the default contacts app.
But I think I'm going to stick with GoContacts for now..
Thanks guys!
Hi there,
I have got a problem, which I don't know how to solve: I just wanted to add a birthday to a contact already saved on my Galaxy S2. So I entered the contact, clicked "edit" - but then, no field for the birthday!? Wtf?
In addition, when I open the contact, TW does not show me the birthday either (for contacts from exchange which do have a birthday added)...
So, this can't be true, can it? Where can I add and see the birthdays of my contacts?
Thanks!
Edit: It seems that I cannot add a birthday to contacts that are connected, which means, which come from my exchange server - can that be?
Because when I add a new contact and choose "Save on phone" I can add a birthday, but when I choose a new contact "Exchange" I cannot add a birthday... But my Exchange Software
can save birthdays, it did so with my HD2 on Android. Any ideas?

Yes, it is more than disappointing.
And no, we don't want to sync our data with google servers for good reasons. Thats why I have my own Exchange and thats what I want the Galaxy S2 to do, nothing more, nothing less.
Guys - I just try to help you out. I came from Lotus Notes and got about 240 contacts in my adressbook. I tried several ways to get them in sync via android. What worked for me was to make a simpel csv-file with all my contacts and import it into my google account. Next step i sync via my phone with my googleacc. This worked. Then I sync with exchange - and now all my fields is visible - and edible. I think - that the phone just work best and smooth with a clean new contactfile. Afther i have no problem.
All systems I have worked with during the years, often got problems when the adressbook not is native.

Thanks for trying to help. But it cannot be that you have to give all your data to Google in order to get things to work properly although you have your own exchange server.
Just delete the contacts in google afther you sync.
By the way - if you worry about security - what you do on a exchange server LOL

Glad to see its not just me, very annoying though. Samsumgs exchange active sync implementation seems to be far from perfect.
Once a week my calendar/e-mail goes rogue and starts up using alot of battery, a reboot fixes this.
I hope this contact problem gets fixed pretty soon, alot of the extra info is missing not just birthdays

We can not discuss about this as I am not the decision maker in my company but of course can suggest to move away from Exchange what they won't do for 100%.
All my previous companies were running Exchange by the way and it's not a point to talk about now.
I've done now what you suggested and imported my Exchange contacts to GoogleMail, deleted and unmarked for sync all contacts and accounts on my Samsungs Galaxy S2.
Resynced now first with GoogleMail only and then added the Exchange account for sync.
I can confirm that I get the birthday field now under the contacts.
Whyever the phone only shows the GoogleMail contacts with Icon and not any other (Active Sync, Skype, Facebook SNS) contacts anymore...
I am confused why they dont show up anymore...
Ahhh now I see... as I deleted my contacts from the phone it also wiped the Exchange contacts... great
OK... it's the same... only the imported contacts from GoggleMail have the birthday field.
When I create a new contact on my phone which is by default saved Exchange then I don't get this option to add a birthday... useless...
I have just received a message from Samsung concerning this problem. They say, they cannot promise that it will be fixed.
Oh, thats very nice. Thank you, very much. Once and never again.

If you would like to add a birthday to a contact, you need to:
Select the relevant contact
Select Edit
Select “Add another field”
Select “Events”
Then add the birthday
Hope this info helps
I'm trying to set the default contact type action when adding a new contact so it's saved to "Google" instead of "Phone" but cant for the life of me figure it out. It seems so basic and was easy on my Galaxys.
Anyway, I discovered that the phone defaults to saving people locally which doesn't sync with my Google account. I can change the "contact type" (when adding a new person) to "Google" and thats works but I was hoping to make that the default account type. Also, I noticed that once you save a contact under the account type "People", there is no way to go back and edit the contact to change that.
Also (and unrelated) I noticed a really strange issue...sometimes when I boot my phone, the "Contacts" icon in the app drawer changes to a "People" icon. It works just fine and is the same application underneath. If I reboot my phone, It will change back. I will post some screen shots below if anyone is interested. Possibly its a little bug..
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this..
* If it matters, I'm running stock 4.4.2 Unlocked/Rooted/S-On
Icon
Thought I would post the screenshots anyway.
In the first, the Contact icon is fine, then after a reboot, it's gone and becomes the icon becomes "People"....after another reboot, it's back to Contacts.
Kinda crazy...
I have the same issue with not being able to save contacts to Google by default and its really annoying. I tried contacting HTC support about it but if course they were no help. Hopefully it'll get rectified in a future update

In the People app, go to Settings>Open account settings. Is Google under the options, and is "Auto Sync" turning on? If you tap Google, does the Sync status seem okay? You might try to remove the Google account, and re-add it.
"People" is the name that HTC uses for this app on all its phones. "Contacts" is what Google uses, and on most other devices (like Samsung). I guess its just one of those silly things that HTC made different "just to be different". Its actually odd that "Contacts" shows up at all (then changes to "People"), and I've never seen that.
Since you are rooted, you didn't happen to migrate your contact info or anything related (call history, SMS, etc.) from another device?
You might try to navigate to Contacts (yes, ironically the app is still called "Contacts" even though HTC like to call it "People") in Titatium Backup and see if wiping add data helps.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
No, my contacts all reside on google and when I setup the phone and sign in, it just migrates them on to the phone. Auto sync is turned on and Google syncs just fine.
The issue seems to be that when adding a new contact from the phone, it defaults the "contact type" (the next selection after adding the name at the top of the screen) to "phone" which, of course, stores the contact locally. Because of that, the contact never syncs with "Google. To correct this, you have to change "Phone" to"Google". That saves it to my Google account and all is fine. What I was trying to do was make that Google selection the default when adding a new conact.
As far as the icon issue, it's just weird. I called a couple buddys to ask what they have and they all have "contacts" on thier M8's ..must be a smaill bug
I don't think people realize just how big of an issue this is... I just sorted the view of my contacts so I only see the "locally" stored contacts... There's dozens of contacts I will lose if I have to reformat... I can't believe I can't edit these contacts so Google will sync them. Wtf?

I tried that before hoping it would be the solution however that simply chooses which contacts to display on the screen.
Thanks for taking the time to post your idea though.
Solved!!
This was frustrating me also...
you can solve the problem by going into phonebook via the dialler app on your home-screen then swiping over to people and at the top left hand corner under 'phonebook you can choose which contacts are available...
by only choosing your google account now when ever you add contacts the default should be google and not your phone...
if you need to copy contacts from phone to your google account you can do tat by pressing the options tab (3 buttons top right), manage contacts, copy contacts. Solved!!!
Didn't work for me :/
I tried this solution and unfortunately even when I de-select the 'phone' option from the phonebook, the M8 still defaults to putting new contacts in the phone database. Very strange.... anyone else seeing this? Is there a replacement people/contacts app that can solve this issue? It's really inconvenient.
Thanks!

When adding a new contact, HTC automatically uses the last folder chosen as defualt for next ones being added. Hence if you choose google once while creating a new contact and save it, that (google) will become your defualt folder for future contacts too.
So. At post 13, didn't work for me, first time I would have fixed the problem naturally.
I have an m7 with the same issue. Tried everything started here and nothing works.
I thought android was supposed to be the cool OS that lets you customize at will.
