Seriously, I just started to play with it as this is my first forray into the Android, I decided not to ROOT the phone. I wanted to get to know the unit first *STOCK* and then decided if ROOTING is necessary or not... Mostly just exploring the phone and getting used to Android... Enjoy!

this is something that everyone should do with new phones, IMO (mostly noobs to the android environment). people are quick to root just because they see everyone else doing it.

Agreed. When I first got my Captivate, which was my first excursion into Android land, I ran it stock for about a month before I rooted and modded. That showed a bit of restraint, too, because the Captivate did have some serious problems on stock, ie. lag, gps, etc. On the SGS II running stock is a great experience with no serious problems.
Agreed, just use the phone as is, ask questions, learn how things work, experiment with different applications, widgets, settings, etc. Only after you've fully exhausted the possibilities of what comes stock with the phone and determined that you really need a feature that it doesn't provide should you consider rooting and all that. In short, don't try to change what you don't fully understand yet.

Same. The thing is, I actually kind of like the TouchWiz. I don't really like the aesthetics and the lock screen is terribly crappy, but I don't want to sacrifice everything else just to get a different lock screen and better looking icons.

Good thing it has gorilla glass on it then.
I used it for a bit, was unhappy with battery life. So I rooted via Entropy's stock+root package, de-bloated it via Titanuim Backup, and am enjoying it with better battery life.

Actually, there are ROMs that are based on stock. I didn't know that until now...used CM7 on my Captivate and wished there was a combination of the aesthetics of TW and the speed and functionality of CM7.
UnNamed ROM is an excellent TouchWiz-based custom ROM. There are custom mods for the lock screen (a notification toggle flash that includes a toggle for lockscreen), and some different mods for certain icons, I believe (Kitchen?).
UnNamed ROM is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474

i'm a noob to rooting..but did a root last night..and put kaosyo and i really didnt like the look of it...most of it was in chinese..and i wasnt allowed to connect to anything..i later ....through the help of someone i had to download something else to connect to google and other things..
i like the look of the eris..dont mind rooting..but especially want something that runs faster and smoother..anyone recommend anything like this?..i want to overclock it...but being a noob to this..i get confused in the root rom overclock flash conversation..i've been reading a lot of boards and a lot of google searches...till my head starts to spin...
thank you (and sorry if i go against board rules etc)
I suggest EvilEris. It's 2.1 and sense based, so it's not too much different from what you're used to.
as for overclocking, buy SetCPU from the app market(I suggest buying instead of other means because these guys did good work and deserve compensation for it). The only things you really need to know is to make two specific profiles: One for charging/full that goes to about 710MHz(there's a slide bar in it to make this easier) and one that turns on when the screen is off(this can be picked from a drop down box in the profile maker) that has a max speed of like 245MHZ. This will help optimize your battery life. It's a fairly easy app to use also, so you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
thank you!..i was looking at evil eris..dont like the red..but its one that a lot of people spoke highly of...
i read about that app...will have to buy it..thanks for the help!
now if i can just figure out how to root again..lol...not sure if all that i did yesterday i will have to do the same...but they usually have installing instructions
For rooting your Eris, look at this thread. Works perfectly.

If you don't like the red from evil eris then I suggest senseable 3.1. Also sense based and very well spoken of also. Currently what I use and is my favorite.
As stated before setcpu is good for overclocking. You can download for free from these forums (search for it). And as always if you like it, its always nice to donate by buying the app from the market

That's just the wallpaper he uses. It starts with the default one. The only major colour changes is that he uses blue instead of green on the battery.

If you already rooted, you don't need to do it again. When changing ROMs, all you need to do is wipe factory reset, and cache, and nand backup, and then flash your new ROM (zip file).
Look up adb commands for help.

Yeah I agree with the camera thing. Camera magic isn't nearly as good as the stock camera app.
Plus for some reason froyo roms drain my battery like is going out of style. I'm talking I had a full charge, had data wifi bluetooth etc. off. No setcpu either. I had also calibrated the battery. Twenty minutes later after not even turning the screen on it was down almost 10%. And its only on froyo roms. I don't get it.

It's probably because Froyo roms are OC'ed to 710 already. You need setcpu and create profiles to minimize battery drain.

I had profiles set. Didn't help any. I put the same profiles on senseable (oc'd to 710) and battery life is much better. I was doing some wireless tethering today for over an hour and had less drain than doing nothing with froyo.

I rooted the MT3G with ease. And the flashing of Roms and stuff is easy for Mt3g. But it seems hard for the Vibrant. I don't use abd or anything cause frankly. I don't know how. Can you guys maybe give me suggestions?

Read, understand, experiment. Ppl only get their troubles or "panic" because they dont have anything setup & dont know how to get them selves out it. If you dont want to learn our try to use the tools that are available then just wait till the one-click ROMS or CM comes out.
If you want to take the time to learn then I would suggest to head over to the vibrant "bible".
Easiest way is just to down load one click lag fix from market there is a root option there. Or it really was easy this oas my first android phone. Download the update filter put it in the internal sd and rebooted using hold vol + vol- and power. And installed from there no problem.
Just check out the stickied thread about vibrant tips and tricks

I wondered about rooting too at first, but as it turns out it's very easy. I've read several comments on how easy it is to root the Vibrant compared to Android phones back in the olden days.
And if you want to flash a neat ROM, go check out Bionix.

I just got this phone 2 days ago (my first smartphone ever!) and I've flashed it probably 6 or 7 times now...
Important advice: Right now, once you've installed Clockwork ROM Manager, make a backup of your ROM! I really wish I'd done this, just a near-stock, untouched backup (yes every thread post starts with "make a backup!" but I was stupid)
Now for some encouragement: If I, with zero knowledge of Android/rooting/ROMs/build.prop files/Clockwork/adb/Odin before Sunday at 4 pm, managed to F with this phone as much as I have and not even come close to bricking it, you'll be *golden* just flashing it with a well-known ROM.
Flashing ROMs is super easy with Clockwork. It's like... 3 or 4 clicks easy.
Right now I'm running Bionix and really enjoying it. You might check it out while we all wait for Cyanogenmod to come out for Vibrant.
TL;DR: I've been pushing files, flashing broken ROMs, all sorts of fun stuff and my phone is still pluggin' away. I wouldn't worry too much about bricking. Just read the threads, search the Googles, and ask for help if you get really stuck. And backup.
Make sure you check out Eugene323's stuff as well. He puts out some incredible work.

I had more problems with my MT3G than I did with this phone. It took a day to root and rom the MT3G since I have the one with the head phone jack (stupid gold card crap).
Do what everyone has suggested. DL the One Click Lag Fix and touch the option to root. I'm running the Bionix 1.3 and it's good.
I waited and waited. Thought about rooting and using a ROM before the official ICS update came from AT&T but just decided to wait. Finally got the update via Kies, excited like a school girl. Initially it was a cool new bit of scenery, and as the OS settled in with me, i found myself disappointed and wanting my gingy back. I've been upgrade for a couple months now i think, and had plenty of time to try to get used to it.
I am finding lots of things that just plain suck.
1 - Text message notification audible alert discontinues after awhile (unknown amount of time), only resolution I've found is to reboot the phone. This sucks because just out of nowhere my text notification tone stops. Everything else like ringtone etc is fine. This is a dealbreaker for me almost. This worked fine on Ginerbread.
2 - new Swype software gives me problems when the word suggestion feature stops working completely. Swype is hard to do without word suggestions at times. Only solution i've found is again, reboot the phone. This sucks. I know, don't use swype, but i WANT to use it. It worked perfectly on Gingerbread.
3 - the widget for Google Voice is super tiny now, and i don't see a way of making it bigger. It's approximately the size of 4 icons, whereas before on Gingerbread it was huge and you could easily read/see your voicemails. Maybe i'm missing something on how to change the widget size, but i see no way of doing it.
4 - my News and Weather widget, which i used for weather and news all the time, since my original Galaxy S, does not display any weather information anymore. Just says "No Weather Information". this worked fine on Gingerbread. I guess different phone OS makes widgets work differently. I just want mine to work as expected. News still comes through fine though.
5 - Unlocking the screen seems more difficult now, usually takes me a couple tries, whereas it seemed really smooth and awesome before the update
6 - Power Saving widget is huge now, takes up half of one screen, whereas before it was just 1 row and you could scroll across. Why make it bigger and take up more room with no additional functionality?
After listing all this out, i'm trying to think of the things i LIKE about ICS update, and i can only think of one, which is the data monitoring/limiting which is kind of a cool feature. I doesn't seem any faster really than before. So overall, i honestly was happier with Gingerbread. 6 things that i find that suck versus one thing i like.
Maybe this is me being picky, but as excited as I was to get ICS, i'm equally disappointed in the upgrade. My wife uses a Galaxy Note and it is available for her phone now, and I told her don't bother with the upgrade.
Anyone have any advice??? experience the same problems? I know i could root, install a custom rom etc, but i really like the touchwiz stuff from samsung and i was really happy with just the stock gingerbread OS, even with all the bloatware, i just disregard all that junk.
I'm having the same problem with text notification I just notice that I get a text it would sound but just about an hour ago it just stopped I would get a text and nothing ringtones works and everyrhing but I think is a ics bug maybe it would get fixed in the new update 4.0.4

at&t sucks. bottom line.
Advice, if you want to stick with touchjizz, run a custom one, there are plenty that *should* have those issues taken care of.
But the widget size issue, thats just looks, with a different launcher can change size of widgets.
Lol I called this one. A bunch of people upgrade to stock ICS. Then they complain and want to switch back, mess it up, and start new threads. Hopefully they all learned their lesson about carrier upgrades . I mean even I tried it, just to see what it looked like and how it functioned. Then again I knew how to get back to a custom Rom Before I did it. It's actually not too bad, but there were just too many bugs and battery life was too bad for my taste.

It isn't 100% on all phones it seems to be random but instead of posting something VERY VERY risky for people not so inclined to troll the forums and find out about the risks of certain actions why not shut up or post what you think will work then link them to a topic showing what bad could happen. You just seem like you want people to brick and make more topics about how they tried to reset and bricked. You also need to think of Google searches that link to this topic and they read it and see you said reset and they do it. It isn't just xda its anyone with the internet don't lead people to a possible brick

The only way to go "back" to Gingerbread is to flash UCKH7 straight stock or one of the Gingerbread stock plus root packages in Entropy512's thread. So yes, use that, or one of my guides.

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Read the threads.
No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.
Oh okay so I read that wrong. So we can't even downgrade to a previous version or that requires root and an unlocked bootloader. Also if my device is on 2.x no root goodness for me huh?

No. You are stuck stock just like I am until someone figures it out. If they figure it out. Or you could pay the 45.00 for the JTAG s-off.

Women can justify buying the same damn shoes and clothes in different shades of the same color, getsing jtagged should not be questioned.
And then oddly enough they complain when they see another in the same dress. Exclaiming how she stole her idea. Not even thinking she just might have the same taste in clothes but oh no that "B**** better get out that dress 'cause I wore it first"

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

BAD DOG! *rubs your nose in it*
Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.
Well, I have successfully booted up 4.2 on my Droid X2. I have been running it since Monday, and it's pretty stable. the only things that aren't working are:
Video Camera
Bluetooth
A few bugs from CM10.
I want to know if you guys want me to finish it up, and try to ready it up for a release this weekend, or if you want me to try to fix bluetooth, and the video camera.
EDIT: I'm going to attempt to fix bluetooth. If it causes too many problems, i'll release it without bluetooth and work on it in my free time. There is a couple stability issues I have patched up, and it seems to be working just fine so far.
EDIT2: I'm taking finals tomorrow then i'll have a good month of tinkering with this ROM. My goal is to get it pretty stable by then end of August (like 8/10 stable).
You should talk to Dragonzkiller. He is also making cm10.1.

I don't know how to get in contact with him. He's on XDA for like 5 minutes every week.
He has a twitter account he uses more often. @dragonzkiller.

not so much.
I would use his help, but I don't think he would be active enough when I needed him. I may get some help from Hashcode if I run into a problem updating this. I like to go solo with most of my things because people program differently. People use different organization, etc..

The thing is, he doesn't have an X2, so I'm not sure if it's really different from other devices he's worked with.

True. Bluetooth is really difficult to fix so is the camera. Keep it up though, its good to see someone working on it.

Nice to hear someone is still working on this thing. If you have a decent build of 4.2.2, I dont see a reason to not release it. Just put all the usual warnings in the post and make it an Alpha. If you do, I'll flash it and test it out. Good work

A lot of people use bluetooth so i'll try to get that working. I'm not sure if i'll take the time for the camera, considering it's been an issue for a while. You can take pictures, you just can't record.

I have been working on this since about the time CM10 A2.99999 was released. The first time it didn't even boot, the next time, touch screen didn't work, and i've just been wiping out issues since then. It's pretty stable, has about the same battery life as CM10 A3 but I know of some apps that help it greatly. Right now I can get about a 12 hour battery life. This includes a phone call or 2, texting, some web browsing, and a little bit of gaming during my web design class.
I have it to a point where it can be a daily driver for some. I want it to be a little bit more stable. I'm free today so i'll spend most of my evening working on it. Tomorrow i'll have a little free time.

Sounds like you got most of the kinks worked out. And you're right about the camera. It may never be fixed since you cant use certain things that Jelly Bean needs. Again, good work. Sounds like you put a lot of effort into this. :good:

I have put a lot of effort in. Theres a few more things i'm going to fix before i push out the ROM. I never thought this phone would see 4.2.
I wanted 4.2, and no one did it, so I learned how to do this myself.

Thats what people SHOULD do. I bet you learned a lot by building your own ROM too. Next thing you know, you'll start making apps.

I have already made apps. Learning how to make apps helped me pick this up easier. Once I get my new phone i'll try to make a custom ROM.
