ICS source to be released soon.... - HTC EVO 3D

Earlier today, Dan Morrill of the Android Team posted a message to the Android Building Google group updating the status of code availability due to recent server downtime.
“We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once its available on devices.”
So guys.....expect CM9 and other roms based on ics soon....

haha, i think the point i was trying to make was that we have evo 3d's... it won't be for a little while. HTC would still need to get a project team together, integrate the software with our device, build a kernel for it, and test/troubleshoot.
that could be months away before you even hear about an official release from them. i think our dev's here have a better shot at getting a fully functional rom out (as far as a timeframe goes)

dude they have always done this. it will be pushed to AOSP the day of or after the phone is released. just like with FroYo and Gingerbread. Honeycomb is the only exception to the rule.
So yeah depending on your defn of soon, itll be out in November once the actual phone is released. NOT a moment before though b/c thats not how they do things.

In the early days of android there have been unofficial leaks

i would assume manufacturers have special access to this source code months before release. my guess is we get the ota a month and half after the nexus is released. What im wondering is how htc will integrate sense with ICS? will they remove parts of sense since ICS is more than adequate?

Since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this week, HTC has been looking closely at the new OS's features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. We're a recognized industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades to our Android devices (see what Engadget had to say about our upgrades: http://engt.co/qMb9nQ), and Ice Cream Sandwich will be no different.

Guys, don't count on any form of ICS.... AOSP or Sense any time this year. Just let it go... =p
If you want ICS, go to (bleh) Verizon or wait til next year when someone gets it rolling on our phones.

As far as custom ROMs go, we're close to getting a bootable ICS sdk port and when source drops, we should have a stable (no 4G, sound, camera, 3D, etc.) ICS ROM weeks after.
Cyanogenmod 9 alphas should also be here around a month or two after the source drops.
But as far as an HTC update goes, I think we'll be seeing it in February-March.

Bootable SDK port is not at all what I was talking about. That's gonna be a butchered up mess...
I agree with you about CM9 alpha builds.. but that goes along with what I said about not getting it this year. The source won't drop until the Galaxy Nexus is released..which is in November.
I don't really see how you can call a rom with no sound, camera, 4G, 3D stable tho lol. It likely will have MMS issues as well. That isn't at all stable.
So yea, don't expect anything ICS flavored this year other than something you can boot up and play around with, then wipe off when you actually need your phone =p
I'm ok with it tho, I would like it ASAP but I understand it takes time... and I'm not into flashing anything that's ..well, butchered.
I think the real concern will be how much HTC killsoff the look and feel of ICS with Sense.

You and me both. I'd like to see them go the *gasp* Samsung route and just leave the vanilla android icons and such. Tone Sense waaay down and just concentrate on other ways to make it better.

As much as I don't see them leaving it very vanilla, at some point they are going to have to realize that people are getting tired of Sense and change it up.

A month and a half is plenty of time to get ICS running. Distros like CyanogenMod are already set up to merge changes that it will bring. I'm too lazy to keep searching for it, but Cyanogen has publicly said that they're prepped for the changes

It took longer than 1.5 months for GB, You MIGHT get an alpha but I doubt it. There are 2 major holidays left that are going to impact development, and we don't even have cm7 on our 3Ds yet aside from an alpha.
We can debate it but none of us really know. I'm just making a guess based on past experiences. I'm fine with it regardless tho, ICS looks nice visually, but, that's about all I care about in the new android 4.0. The last android update I wanted was 2.2, since then they have been kinda meh

It will. HTC and other OEMs made a pledge to google that they will update their phones to the latest android version for a span of 1 1/2 years from first release. and the evo started from GB, it should at least receive 1 major android update.

haha cm9 out b4 the 3D gets ICS? u are truely nuts. it took a few months to port stable functioning CM GB to phones once the code was released. You might get a "base" in a couple weeks after the code is released but unless you want a 3D with hardly anything working I bet HTC/Sprint push ICS to it before CM9 arrives to it.

didn't the evo have cm6 on it before though? the initial port over will always take the longest and with the current state of the 3D's port id venture to say you cna forget about ICS till that starts getting better, less you like the current bug state of cm7 on the 3D. to each their own though, I just can't take that many bugs, not worth it to me.

Ill eat my words if it comes true. A better comparison would be if we got FroYo2.2 from htc/sprint on the Evo4G before we got CM6. That was the first OS update since the device was released. 2.2 code was released end of June'10 i think and we got official sprint/htc update to 2.2 end of july '10. CM6 didn't have the first nightly builds publically till the same time.
what it really comes down to is what you consider "having CM9 on evo3d." to me that is a sound RC build and not alpha builds like we have now, and I am willing to go out on a limb and say sprint/htc get it out before CM, just based on current state of CM7.
but like i said before toast is a genius and anything is possible with that guy behind it.
it was just announced. we'll get it soon enough. just relax. we need to focus on getting around that damn HBOOT 1.5 a little better fist IMO.

We’ve been hard at work on CM9 since Google released Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) into the wild last month, and things are slowly starting to come together. Google did a great job with ICS and added some really awesome features which in some cases replace or deprecate functionality that we had in CM7, so we are reevaluating all of our customizations. A number of devices are already up and running with CM9, and the focus is currently on getting as many devices ready as we can. The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer. Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One. I don’t want to make any promises at this time, but that is the plan. And sorry Droid1 owners, we’re dropping support for you. Time to upgrade
There are a number of challenges that we are up against. Google has made some pretty major changes to the Android framework that break compatibility with older proprietary camera and graphics drivers in order to achieve some pretty insane performance, but I am confident that the team will be able to overcome these issues like we have in the past.
For those of you who like to build CM from source yourself, you probably know that the spin-up time when starting a CM7 build is absurdly long due to the high number of devices in our repository. Koush and Arcee have put together a solution to this problem that adds new devices on-demand to your local repository, saving on both bandwidth and the long startup time. Some other great enhancements are coming too, like a completely overhauled music app, a new file manager, and a new launcher based on stock 4.0.
If you have a Nexus S, you can check out the code and build for yourself today. More devices are on the way, and I’ll send out these status updates as we make more progress.

[Q] OTA update to ICS for E3D

So does anyone have any sort of idea as to when we will get an OTA update to ICS. I read a post from HTC on Facebook that this was supposed to be in the beginning of 2012, but nothing more definitive than that other than it was coming to the E3D for sure. Do any of you guys have more up to date information? I like the dev-ports of ICS, but a solid, factory issued update would rock!
My guess would be May or June 2012.

my vote is sometime before summer....July at the latest
I know that currently the only thing holding back ICS for the 3D is the drivers. I can't remember where I read it, but I think I remember seeing the end of December for that. Aside from that I think they just need to prepare everything for supporting the OS, like documentation for example.
So I would think we should see it earlier in q1 than later but if anything takes longer than they expected it will delay the whole thing.
I'll say March.. Hopefully cm9 will be much sooner... Hopefully
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
CM9 should be sooner. If I remember correctly, Toast has most everything working with the exception of WiMax and some variations of hardware acceleration.
The title of this thread is very misleading. My heart skipped a beat, that's for sure.
they might say Q1 but getting getting everything perfect and pushed out to everyone might take longer. i'm betting summer of 2012.

They already stated they are having to think about how their Sense is going to mesh with the new OS ICS and how to go forward with it, and possibly change Sense too. This alone will be the big hurdle HTC faces and would be the major factor in the time of when we get an OTA from them. imho
If they were gonna just push out ICS on our phones in vanilla form wed have it any sec now, but the whole sense thing causes conflict with that since ICS incorporates few sense features in it now.
cm9 will soon....
I want vanilla Ics personally.

Sorry man, I didn't mean to get your hopes up. I just wanted to get some ideas. I upgraded to the E3D from the E4G for 3 reasons:
- 1.2 GHz dual core Snapdragon
- 1 GB Internal Storage
- Official ICS update for E3D not for E4G
That had me sold. Had to upgrade my plan to a family plan and add another line just to get it without paying an arm and a leg. And dang it, I want my money's worth on this one!! Lol!!

As far as I know, we have Android 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0 as our latest. We didn't get Sense 3.5 which is why WiMAX doesn't work on any of the dev-ports. Sprint has not released a phone with Sense 3.5 so we can't get WiMAX keys for a 3.5 ROM.
I heard from my hair stylist that her brother heard from his friend's sister that a Sprint employee told her cousin that we will get it on January 1, 2012. I think this is reliable.
I think March is too soon. I think may is more likely.

I have been running one of the Evervolv pre-Alphas for about a week now - All 3 of the ICS builds in the CDMA dev section are usable, you just have to figure out which features you can and can't live without. I love preludedrew's Alpha4, the HW accel makes it so snappy. Honestly I don't miss CM too much (but I will definitely try them out whenever there is a release). Try out one of the other releases - having ICS is sooooo worth it!

I agree although this phone is tough for a few different reasons.
1. There are two completely seperate versions GSM vs. CDMA and thats fragmenting the devs.
2. 3D is tough and a first for many
3. GSM kernerl source was f'ed for a long time so that threw development time in the trash
4. The upcoming ICS release has somewhat slowed development because some are just waiting to see what happens with an update. I wouldnt want weeks or months of my hardwork go to waste overnight because of an update to a whole new build by HTC.
With that said i think once ICS does drop it could provide many answers about some of the "under the hood" workings of this device, and development will pick up. As someone said this phone is a real beast under the cover.
None of this is to say that the devs currently working arent doing a great job. some of the stuff i have seen is great and there is a lot being done to get AOSP roms going on this phone. I have seen Development pick up greatly over the last few months. So i look forward to whats in store.

Never getting cm7 because of ICS is just speculation on your part. Regardless, we never got it.
We aren't even officially supported by CM, nobody knows what exactly is going to happen. That's why people should get comfortable with other roms...I can only imagine what this place is gonna look like once cm9 nightlies drop and our phone isn't on the list.
I have no doubt that CM will eventually make it's way to the evo 3d (I do have doubts about the 3d part ever working tho) it's just gonna take a little time. It will be worth it once everything gets rolling.

Is there a stable ICS CM9 Rom?

I have been looking and looking but I cant find a CM9 port for the Rezound.. Can someone link me?
How stable is it?
The INC port is incredibly good now, and im deciding whether to snag the rezound or the Gs3.
in one word.....No
Edit: the best shot you have at a stable ics ROM is one of the last 2 leaks.

Umm...no. If you want AOSP based Roms, I would go with another phone....for now

In a few more words, no.
But here is the Nightly thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566489
Note that it has been closed more or less due to abuse (excessive off-topic discussion and general whining)
The developer's repo for the builds, note the changelog in the thread is not up to date, the latest build in the repo is from May 16th at the time of this post:

RIL and ICS kernel are the primary roadblocks. Both have been worked on behind the scenes, RIL is fixed and kernel will happen eventually. CM9 will likely arrive in full form sooner or later, but currently not complete and stable.
That sucks! how is the INC way more stable than the rezound for ICS?
So.. when ICS comes out from verizon for the rezound, Cm9 stable will be possible?

haha man, come on, this is everywhere.
the reason is because of RIL/ICS kernel, as stated above.

Even though I don't particularly like Sense, the Sense ROMs I've tried are generally more completely functional that the Sense-less ones. I'm willing to roll with one (Nils' Business Sense) until a CM9 port comes out.
But to address the OP, the SGS3 will probably have a better CPU at the least when it comes out; don't know about radios & camera, though. It also looks like the CM9 work is already farther along. If you can wait, you can order or pre-order the GS3 and return it if the camera or radio prove to be intolerable. I probably would have waited too if my mom hadn't had an emergency need for my Inc

if u really want cm9 get a verizon 3G HTC phone...those are the only ones that have the most chance of getting a stable aosp rom.....any LTE phones will need major reworks done for it to be 100%

But I see more incentive for devs to get cm9 working on the gsIII so it might come way quicker

I agree but Cleanrom dev ed and slimrom are pretty solid. I've not had ANY issues with either one. Especially with the themes from pilot, pretty sweet! If your looking for AOSP the themes at least give it that feel or look (kinda).

Well, when verizon pushes out the ICS update for the rezound, will the Cm9 pick up and become stable?

Work on CM9 on the GS3 is only for the international version, 3g, the US version will have LTE and will have the same issues.
Two words... Released Source....
Until we have that, it will be tough going.
Unfortunately, it appears the halcyon days of AOSP on Verizon are past. Hope I'm proves wrong by the GS3.
I'd like to help change that. Have never developed for an Android kernel before, but have done Linux work. Willing to take a shot at the pmem issues at least. Sent a PM to dmeadows to see if he's down but not expecting much. I'll just have to wait and see
