Tethering/Mobile AP works on my other phone - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

This is strange.
I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-i777 yesterday.
I was using an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-i959 T-Mobile Vibrant with my AT&T sim card.
Today I started my Mobile AP on my ROOTED Vibrant and Mobile AP WORKS great.
Then I took the AT&T sim card out and put in my new Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-i777 and..........
I got this following message:
Tethering/Mobile AP is unavailable
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.
Why would this work on the Vibrant and not on the Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-i777???????????
Has anyone been able to get it to work without getting the plan with this phone?
Will it work after rooting the phone?

The mobile AP ability is controlled by the phone. It checks your att account to see if you have paid for this feature. If not you get that message. Running a custom ROM that check can be disabled and allow you to tether regardless.
If you want the feature back you need to flash a ROM that enabled it. To do that you must first root and install CWM. Check the dev section, there are plenty of guides.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)

It doesn't work on native AT&T phones because AT&T puts in measures to enforce tethering.
It can be worked around, do some research, because this is a (hint hint):

[Q] Vibrant vs Captivate

I'm travelling to US and wanted to buy a new phone and unlock it. I would like to know which phone do you guys recommend as long as I can unlock it to use with another GSM carrier. Which method to unlock should I use?
Samsung Captivate SGH-i897 Black 3G GSM Smart Phone for AT&T Only or Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 Black 3G Cell Phone for T-mobile Service Only
Thx

Do this method work?
http://www.communityhosting.net/sgsunlock/
Well, I can't advise you on the unlocking part, but you'd probably be better off getting a tmo vibrant over the captivate for 2 reasons.
1. Vibrant has froyo officially
2. Vibrant can also get AT&T 3g (though ymmv)
If I flash the phone with a new ROM it will still be locked right?
How do I get the unlocking code with T-mobile?
Yes, I do believe that even if you flash a new ROM over stock the phone will still be locked down to the carrier.
AFAIK, you would have to have been a Tmo customer for a while before you can ask for the unlock code.
If I know someone who is a tmo customer, can he gets me this unlock code?
Theoretically, it might work but I'm not sure if the phone has to match the one your friend has attached to his acct.
I'm running a Vibrant on AT&T. In most cities this works great, though you may lose 3g in cities that don't have the 1900 band. I just used the SGS unlock from Heroz (I think that's correct). It worked great. A person with a T-Mobile account can get you the unlock code as well, though it will take a day or two.
I would check which frequencies the carrier you intend to use the phone with uses, and pick the phone that matches those frequencies better. They are basically the same phone aside from the radios and physical appearance.

[Q] From T-Mobile to ATT: Can this be done?

I bought my Samsung Galaxy Drod v2.1 when I was a T-Mobile customer. Then I unlocked the phone and moved to ATT (work reasons). Everything seems to be working ok but the GPS. Its kind of flaky. In fact, it has worked at all for months and then suddenly today, it started working. I dont know why. Here is my question:
1) Are there settings that would allow my Galaxy's GPS to work perfectly on ATT as it did on T-Mobile?
2) Is there a way to Flash a Android v2.2 onto my Galaxy on ATT?

I assume that by "Samsung Galaxy Drod v2.1" you mean "samsung galaxy vibrant with android 2.1", if so, then readng the sticky posts in here would've answered all your questions and also given you instructions on how to do everything with the vibrant.
to quickly answer your 2 questions:
1) Yes, there files you can flash too
2) Yes, look in the android development section
Thanks ID006. Looked but couldnt find it. I'll try again.....
I tried to find where I can load Android 2.2 but couldnt find it in the stickies. Does anyone have a link? Thanks.

Thanks Cash.
I also ask questions like that. thanks

[Q] Is it possible to use T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T, Voice and Data?

If you get a T-Mobile version of Samsung Galaxy Note (original), and sim unlock it, can you use it on AT&T network? How would be data speed? Edge only?
Re: [Q] Is it possible to use T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T, Voice and Data?
Its only possible for those who take the time to search and educate themselves.
You will probably not like my statement, but I mean it in the most professional manner.
Just a basic Google search of using tmobile note on att network gives lots of help.

Really? I just did "a basic Google search of using tmobile note on att network" and guess what? Instead of getting "lots of help" I got NOTHING of that sort. Lots of reviews and such, oh yeah, there's something about using att note on tmoble network, just the opoosite of what I want to do.
Mods, please close the thread.
Re: [Q] Is it possible to use T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T, Voice and Data?
Yes, you can sim unlock and use an ATT sim....however, you will only get Edge.

Here, let me break it down for you.
All those pages you mentioned (35 pages) about using att note on tmobile all say the same thing:
Unlock phone.
Flash t-mobile radio
Input APN
You want the same thing, but opposite networks:
Unlock phone
Flash at&t radio
Input APN
My apologies. Since you were a member of a development forum I thought you could piece things together. Maybe in the future, let people know you're not very knowledgeable. Everyone here gives very explicit help for newbies.
Why not head over to the t-mobile note forum. I looked over there and probably 1 out of 5 posts in the Q and A was your Q.
Id trade you my att galaxy note for your tmobile one.
I hate having to have a data plan, with the tmobile version I could stick to talk and text. Also this way you wouldnt have the hassle of getting data working.
let me know,I can send pics and stuff.I would also be willing to send first since im kinda new here and cang be vouched for yet.

It's getting to be time for a sticky about this. Search the forums for "Straight Talk" - using their SIMs is pretty easy.
The Verizon Galaxy S4 is not SIM locked. Install the SIM, set the APN, and done.

I'm not sure how to respond to this, but here's a try.
You change from one carrier (Verizon is a carrier) to another (Straight Talk is another carrier) by removing the Verizon SIM from your phone and installing a Straight Talk SIM into your phone. A "SIM" is a Subscriber Identity Module that tells your phone what carrier to use and what your phone number is.
You asked about unlocking. You don't have to, since the phone will accept a SIM from any carrier.
For data to work, your phone has to be configured to use your new carrier's network. That's configured by setting up the Access Point Name corresponding to that new carrier.
The "Search" suggestion was because there's already an active thread in this forum discussing using Straight Talk on the I545. Since this is not a tutorial site, you should follow that thread and ask questions there.

I couldn't have explained it better myself. Alot of people get so grumpy about "noobs" coming in and asking questions.
+1 to you for not chewing him out for asking a noob question.
At Least he put it in the Q&A section though not in a general or dev. thread right...

Straight Talk Wireless uses the AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint networks. You want to check with Verizon to see if you can register your phone with Straight Talk using the Verizon network. Just go to the Straight Talk Wireless web site.
You’ll enter your phone’s serial number and your location and check if it is possible to transfer your phone to Straight Talk. I have never used a Verizon phone on Straight Talk. They also use the Sprint network. You might want to confirm with Straight Talk support that they won’t register your phone on the Sprint network. I looked it up, your phone should be a SCH-I545 model, which I doesn’t look like its compatible with Sprint. You can call them and ask.
I’ll also mention that as far as I know the Straight Talk’s Verizon network is 3G only, not 4G LTE. Supposedly, Verizon doesn’t allow any of the prepaid cellular services to use their LTE network. If you get 4G LTE service where you live on Verizon, you may notice a difference in data speeds. If your S4 is still active on Verizon, install the SpeedTest app, and see what types of data speeds you are getting on Verizon.
You don’t need a SIM card to use your phone on Straight Talk. In the US, we use two different cellular technologies: CDMA and GSM. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. Since there is not AT&T service where you live it doesn’t matter but If you want to use a Verizon phone on the AT&T or T-Mobile network your phone model needs to be compatible with the network you want to use it on and the phone needs to be SIM unlocked.
You might want to take a look at Verizon prepaid as well.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions or need more help. I’d also love to hear how it works out for you.

[Q] Verizon to T-Mobile Galaxy S5

After 10 years with Verizon, I had enough (long story)... Switched over to T-Mobile recently with my Verizon Galaxy S5 Phone, however I have a few questions.
When I was on VZW I was able to root with towlroot, installed xPosed, and removed the Verizon bloatware. I then inserted the SIM from T-Mobile and made adjustments to the APN. It all seems to be working fine. I understand I will not get the full bandwidth, and I am OK because it was not worth $600 to purchase a new phone (Actually 3 new phones).
My questions are:
1) Should/Can I install SafeStrap and use one of the T-Mobile ROM, Kernals, etc... to be a "true" T-Mobile mobile phone?
2) Are there any T-Mobile specific APK's I should have?
3) I assume I can not get the wireless calling which T-Mobile uses?
4) Any other tips and trick from people that did the same thing?
So far happy with T-Mobile. Thanks in advance for the help.
..
Thank questions answered. I will search around.
