[Q] Help! My Contacts disappeared! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Evo running Cyanogen Mod 7. When I look in my contacts list, it says I have no contacts and gives me all the customary options to add contacts.
My gmail is configured correctly, it is set up to sync contacts. All my contacts are still in my gmail account.
When I send a text to someone (I have GoSMS installed) it prompts me with a contact name if I start type, so I know the data is in there somewhere.
I have a backup on Rom Manager from a few days ago, but everytime I try and restore it, it keeps freezing and won't restore.
2 separate problems perhaps?
Any suggestions?

You need a PC to restore it when i get on my PC i will tell you how to fix it

Have you ensured they have been selected as viewable from the settings in the contacts app?

Don't use Rom Manager, go into recovery and try to restore the backup manually. From now on do everything manually through recovery instead of using Rom Manager - you'll have a lot less problems. I suggest using Amon Ra instead of ClockworkMod, but that's your choice.
If you can't get the backup to restore, then wipe everything in recovery (data, cache, and dalvik cache at the least) and then flash CM7. Be sure to flash the correct gapps as well, flashing the wrong one could cause issues. Don't restore system data with Titanium Backup - this could also cause issues.
If you can get the backup to restore, do the same as mentioned above if you still want to flash CM7 (or update it).

After flashing using titanium backup

After I flashed the new rom I used titanium backup to restore my stuff like usual...however this time after I restore all my apps and system data the phone acted very unstable! I reflashed and now I am wondering if anyone knows what the file name is for my contacts and Sms messages? I really would like to get my contacts back up. Thanks for all the help!

Use google for your contacts, then a soon as you log into your gmail account it will sync them.
SMS may not be recoverable if you change Android versions (2.1 -> 2.2, 2.2 -> 2.2.1, etc)

Your sms's are gone unless you used an app called sms back up!

A good rule of thumb is to restore system data. Keep your contacts backed up with Google or on your SIM card and simply redo the rest once the new ROM has settled (10 minutes and a couple reboots).
There's a simple reason for this: If the author of your new ROM tweaked one of the system files that you're restoring, restoring from a backup could destabilize your ROM, or worse, send you into boot-loops.
3rd party apps (Angry Birds and the like) are usually safe, while System apps (SMS, Launcher settings) are unsafe often enough to want to avoid restoring them.
One other thing, you did not say which rom you changed to. If it was MIUI, then titanium does not fully work. You will have to restore one at a time on the non-system apps per the above post.

Here's what I'd do:
1. Restore the NANDROID you made before flashing the new rom
(or in case you didn't)
1. Flash the ROM you were previously on, and restore your titanium backup'd stuff
Next
2. Enable "sync contacts" with google (as suggested above)
3. If your Sms messages are restored, back them up as suggested above
Then
4. Flash your new rom
5. Enable "sync contacts" with google to get your contacts
6. Use the Sms restorer thingy mentioned above

[Q] Checkrom revolution hd 3.1.1 KIES

Hi,
I just wiped and flashed this and as expected, have lost all data. thats fine.
I tried restoring the old contacts backed up using TB that didnt work. I tried using the Kitchen's backup\restore user data stuff, doesnt work.
I took backup of the contacts in three different places and none of them work
the last option i have is now to use Kies but i dont think we can sync contacts from a backed up file thru kies air.
Can someone please help me out with this?
Thanks!
Not sure I understand your problem. I assume you have successfully flashed CheckROM 3.1.1 and rebooted. Why don`t you sign in to GMail and have your Contacts sync to your SGS2?
What does TB say when you try restore? It works perfectly for me

Hi,
The issue was that the back up from both kitchen's user data back up and tb would complete and I still wouldn't find my contacts back.
I found another post which was useful..

The info by turkdos helped me.
Thanks.

[Q] Contacts keeps crashing

Hey.
I'm on Cyanogen, the newest nightly build, and my contacts had a lot of duplicates and I wanted to get rid of them all, just import the ones I want, so since I can't seem to find a delete all contact thing in the contacts menu I went into Titanium backup and I delete the Contact Storage and now my Contacts menu keeps crashing.
I though it would only get rid of the Contacts in the menu but I seem to of broken it ha ha.
Any way of fixing this?
Cheers
Delete or Wipe?
did you delete contacts storage or just do a wipe data? You'll get FC's if you delete the app since it needs it to store contact data
You'll have to restore the apk from titanium or extract it from your rom and place it in /system/app again if this is the case...
If you did a wipe and it's now freezing, I would try wiping contacts app data as well and reimporting your contacts from a backup and trying again!
Hope this helps..

Hey man thanks for replying. Just uninstalled the contacts storage and now when I click on Contacts it opens and immediately closes like straight away. I have deleted my backup in Titanium backup, how could I just get the Contacts back i don't really want to have to delete all my data again and do another backup. Is there anything I can do? I think in Rom manager I have a backup from earlier just after I came to the newest ROM? Anyway I can extract just the contact thing from that
If I'm reading this correctly, you've got a backup of your current rom?
If that's the case, you could restore contacts and contacts storage app/data with AppExtractor(free app?). AppExtractor is a very handy app which you can use to restore just individual apps or app data(or both) from a NANDROID backup.
I used it to restore my sms and other settings when going from LP7 to LP9
Thanks again, I extracted it and it's on my sd card but what do I do with that now that it's there? Do I just use Astro and click on it to install it or something or do I have to drag it somewhere
EDIT
I just saw you can install them from that folder but now everytime I open contacts I get a android.process.acore has stopped all the time!
Before it would just quit straight away but now it's giving me this error
Usually clearing the cash fixes it but it isn't fixing it this time
I'm not sure what you extracted, can you explain exactly what you did? When using AppExtractor it won't extract to SD, it restores/extracts apps and their data to their place in either /system or /data - So i'm not sure what you mean...
Clear your cache and dalvik cache using CWM recovery, then reboot. See if that helps.
I clicked on Extract APKS and they extracted to some folder on my memory and I could see them all there. I will try erasing the cache now 1 second.
EDIT
Yeah wiped cache and the dalvik cache and still same problem :S
Any suggestions mate?
If nothing important in phone, factory wipe or flash again.
Your contracts are on your gmail aswell, use your PC and fix your contacts there, after that when you sign in on your phone you will get synced with corrected contacts

When you say flash again does that just mean download and install the ROM again?
Can I do that without having to back everything up again and start from scratch? Or do I have to do that?
When I say backup, that means pictures and videos. Not apps.
Yes flash again and wipe.
Wipe means you have to do all again.

Restore contacts

Hi,
I have the X10 mini (E10) running Froyobread custom rom on stock kernel.
When I was on stock rom I backed up my contacts (and other) with the "Backup & Restore" stock app to the SD card.
Now I want to restore some contacts to my new rom, but I didn't find any restore app.
Do I need to install this kind of app from the market? If so- which one would be able to restore from my backup file? (*.sbf extention)
Thanks.

The Backup-and-Restore app is a Sony Ericsson only application, it doesn't work without SE's framework. Best thing to do is go back to stock, restore your backup, export the contacts to sd-card from the contacts-app (menubutton - import/export - export to memorycard). It will create a vcf.file on your sd-card that you can import no matter what android version or rom you're on.
Put the backup file into some other Sony Ericsson phone and restore all your stuff in that. ..You can move contacts and messages in mmc/SIM and import it in your phone. ..

Reflash stock system, restore your data, synchronize your data with your google account, flash your desired ROM, log on to your Google account and restore your data via Settings-Accounts-Google-Sync Contacts.

You have a special restore app for Xperia devices which you can find somewhere in this forum...
Else you can use various apps from play store like super backup, apps backup and restore

Not everyone likes the idea of putting everything on the cloud. I personally do not put my contacts up on Google. I back those up to my external mSD card and then restore from there. It's a personal preference and a great option to have.

[Q] Restore contacts after switching Roms?

I was on stock, did a TB and twrp backup.
Flashed to beans 12 ROM.
Now none of my contacts have phone numbers.
Anything I can do to get them back?
Or do I have to restore stock, then save contacts separately (how) and reinstall beans 12 ROM?
Found it.
Under settings in phone I hit import from SD card.
Then everything was duplicated. But can select show only contacts with numbers.
