Rooting to upgrade to latest firmware for S2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys complete amateur at this and couldn't find a clear answer for the issue I'm having. I have an unrooted Galaxy S2, in Sri Lanka.
I believe that my carrier doesn't allow us to get OTA updates as I'm currently on 2.3.3. I've heard that there have been a few more updates since. Was just wondering would it be possible to root the phone and then upgrade to the latest Samsung firmware without installing any ROMs? Just want to break the carriers hold to receive OTA updates from Samsung is all I'm looking for? Is this possible? If it is could someone please point me in the right direction, would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You can install latest firmware without the need of rooting, just grab the orginal firmware (samfirmware.com) and flash it with odin.
This thread can help you:

Flashing orginal firmware via odin dosnt ask root, and dosnt void your warranty.

Thanks, sounds like the perfect solution!

Updating noob: official Updates

Hej Folks,
this may sound silly but I have some questions on updating the SGS2 firmware
1) Where, except on XDA, can I find the official updates by Samsung?
2) Is there any warranty void flashing those?
3) Do I have to flash them one after another to gain all updates or can I just flash the latest one?
4) What is the latest official Update? I read on XDA something about 05.07 but I do not know the correct name right now.
5) How is it flashed? By Odin or via Kies? Or is it just a user preference?
6) Is there a warranty void getting root?
7) Would my SGS2 be rooted after flashing an update if had root on it before?
Sry for all those question. I come from my "old" HD2 and there i just didn't care about warranty and the danger to brick my phone

kies if you want to stick to official updates for your country
2) Is there any warranty void flashing those?
no if they are official
3) Do I have to flash them one after another to gain all updates or can I just flash the latest one?
flash the latest one you don't need to go up in steps
4) What is the latest official Update? I read on XDA something about 05.07 but I do not know the correct name right now.
install kies and connect your phone and it will tell you if you are on the latest firmware
5) How is it flashed? By Odin or via Kies? Or is it just a user preference?
either but a lot of users myself included prefer odin (more stable)
6) Is there a warranty void getting root?
yes
7) Would my SGS2 be rooted after flashing an update if had root on it before?
no any stock firmware update will wipe root
Custom kernel will give you an increase in the custom rom counter that needs setting to zero for warranty .
Samsung release a firmware its forwarded to the phone provider who test and eventually upload to Kies .
XDA pick the firmware up usually as soon as Samsung release it .

Thanks! That answered a few of my questions as well.
2) Is there any warranty void flashing those?
no if they are official
In fact I guess yes (only if you don't use Kies and ROM which is not for your product code).
Some days ago I asked Official Samsung Support about flashing official ROM update on my phone. Their answer was that any change to the phone firmware done outside the Official Samsung Support Center (or acredited I guess) will void the warranty. This was a statement from Samsung Poland. So you might want to write/give them a call in your country for verification.
Other thing is that If you revert the phone to the conditions before flashing (e.g. counter, stock rom for given product code, etc.) they will have no way of telling. But then the reason for returning the phone for repair might very well prohibit such revert.
cheers

[Q] Need Guidance on reseting to update

Hey guys,
I've been mucking around with my galaxy moving between some builds but ultimately have decided to go back to stock for now and wait for 4.0.3 to come out through my carrier.
Anyway, I restored from a CWM recovery image I had and out of curiousity went to update my phone as it's only at 2.3.3. Unfortunately it won't let me update OTA and won't let me update on Keis.
Now i've seen a few threads that say it should be updatable, a few that don't and a few that say both. I just need an information on what I need to do to be able to get the update to my phone and also to prepare it for the eventual ICS update.
Thanks in advance.

Restore Stock Carier from ODIN
Try restoring your carrier's stock ROM using ODIN.
The OTA update is carrier specific and might not work if you're not using the specific ROM provided by your carrier.
You can find a list of (some) official ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Or you can google for it if it's not on the list.

[Q] From custom to stock firmware for OTAs

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 on the three network. If I flash the H3G 2.3.3 firmware to the device using Odin will the OTAs still work? If not is there a way to flash the standard firmware back and have the updates working as normal?
Thanks
If you flash stock firmware for your region, you should be able to get updates OTA again. In saying that, I've seen more than a few cases where this hasn't been the case (Why ? No idea. Never happened to me/not important to me as I don't use stock firmware so I've never delved into the why).
So you can flash stock firmware, see if you can get OTA updates.
If not, might as well take the easy course & flash your stock firmware updates via Odin (like many people) rather than spend potentially who knows how much time trying to find out why OTA won't work in spite of you going back to stock
It works for kies and OTA
I downloaded the original 2.3.3 and flashed it to my Samsung Galaxy S2 and the OTA updates worked up to firmware 2.3.5 and then I plugged into kies and it updated to 4.0.3. I used this site http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=-1#modelsa
Thanks for the help guys.

For the sudden death you can use eMMC Brickbug Check(free on the play), for the root use CFroot 6.4(and you stay in 4.1.2)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238

SGS2 Update Failed. HELP PLEASE

Hello, lovly xda-Members and Supporters,
I'll start so my mother and I use the same smartphone - Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100 ...
When she came back home from work and she told me that there is an update for this, I was blown away,
I was looking through the manual setting on the phone for an update, but it said: No update available ...
So, all well and good, then I tried to update via Samsung Kies, Samsung Kies now says to me: Software update via Samsung Kies is not supported by your device ...
I Did something really silly the other day as i flashed a rom to my Galaxy S2 i9100 and i stupidly forgot to back up my stock firmware.
Is there a possibility to get my old firmware again?
I live in Germany.
& I'd love to have this update on my phone.
Each answer is helpful and I thank you once in advance!

You most definitely can return to stock, but if you didn't back up whatever data you had before flashing the new ROM, then they're gone (assuming you wiped before flashing). You'll find all the firmwares you want here:
http://www.sammobile.com/
I'm assuming that you had ICS before flashing the custom ROM, because you said you didn't receive an update, so you can most definitely do that OR, you can manually flash the update you didn't receive yet, which is 4.1.2 JB Anyway, all firmwares are there
Viel Glück

it was for 4.1.2 JB ? my phone is actually 4.0.4, it was allways 4.0.4, so it isn't for my phone anyway ? where can i find stock everything for my phone ? on Sammobile it shows me Taiwan 4.1.2 ...
PS ; Your German ?
In case you still need ICS, Then I'd suggest you google for that. Just search for samsung galaxy S2 4.0.4 firmware. you should find it. It's also helpful if you add your service providor (O2, T-Mobile or any other) just to make sure the phone will work with that network. It's just safer that way
I don't know if we're allowed to post links to outside sources here, but it's enough to say that many German android forums have what you want you just need to search really well
Not German, but I live in Germany :silly:
