Amateur (noob) questions: UOT Kitchen. - Motorola Droid X2

I found UOT Kitchen and I am really glad it exists because I would have no clue how to make my own custom theme. However I still have a couple questions.
First has to do with the boot animations. In the bar labeled select place for bootanimation, what do I select?
Next question is, can I flash this over another ROM? I want to use the Ginger-Funk ROM to get rid of some bloatware, increase battery life, etc.
And my last question is has to do with how the UOT zip actually changes things. For example, if I uncheck sliding tab in the lock screen tab does it remove the sliding tabs or just not skin them?
Any responses are greatly appreciated, I'm new to all of this and have been researching for awhile now and I'm getting antsy lol.

1 system/media
2 yes
3 it just won't skin them
Tap'n on my LIBERATED X2

That was faster than I expected. Glad I found these forums and thanks a lot!!
If I could bother you for one more question, is there a way to get rid of the sliding tabs? I prefer the lock pattern and it's kind of annoying to unlock my phone twice.
Edit: There are two options for system/media:
Cyanogen ROM
Galaxy S GB ROM
Does it matter which one?
Also there was one thing I missed. When it asks for screen size what do I select. The choices of resolution seem like they are too low for the DX2 or any phone with a large screen. I promise this is the last question I have looked around but haven't found anything =/

What two files did you upload to it? I tried system.hi and framework but when everything was done, I tried to flash it and it said syntax error with updater script.
Any ideas?

The files u upload are framework Res.apk and system ui.apk... at the end when u upload the files u HAVE TO CLICK AMEND SCRIPT make sure u aren't loading the whole framework folder

I am having the same problem with the syntax error. I chose amend script and still received a syntax error. I'm not sure what the problem is. Is it possible to manually push the cooked files onto the phone?

So it worked with out a custom boot animation? I can always figure out how to add one manually later on.

Ok, well I just made a theme this time without the custom boot animation however this time I am getting a (status: 0) error. The work around on their site says to swap the update-binary file from your ROM with the one in the zip you get from them. However, my ROM doesn't contain an update-binary file... I might try flashing a different ROM and see if I can get it to work.

Your using edifying scripting not amend use amend and you won't have that error
Tap'n on my LIBERATED X2

And I quote
" I've tested flashing custom UOT themes on Gingerbread and they work just great. I've included a link to the stock android files so you can now cook your own custom themes in UOT Kitchen. The only elements that don't work are boot animations lock screens. Use amend scripting and load up the two files in the zip below and you're good to go. Have fun! Once you have the zip from UOT, just flash it like a rom in recovery."
So far uot kitchen works on any rom I have tried and I am currently using gingerfunk'd also

Even with amend, no boot animation, and no lock screen, it says updated error.
Where is the updater file on ROMs?

couple of questions. if you use the kitchen will you keep the 1% battery and pulldown toggles or does the kitchen cause you to lose that, can the original files be replaced to revert back to original look? sorry don't mean to hijack the topic.. kitchen has always intrigued me.
** for battery and toggles, is it as simple as copying my service.jar file from my current system after flashing the kitchen theme?

No all of the battery mods have the 1% I believe

You need to feed the kitchen the files for the current ROM your using. Both SystemUI.apk and Framework-res.apk . If your on motogingerfunk you can get these files in a zip in that thread or you can move them off your phone or grab them from your roms zip. The toggle if you have them are in systemui.apk and wont get themed but should still be there. The 1% battery is in a different file entirely and will be fine. USE AMEND SCRIPTING
Lockscreen/Bootanimation do not work

[Q] Implement Theme in Rom

Hello!
I'm trying to make my own Rom right now. With dsixda's Kitchen it isn't very hard to do so I thought I'd just give it a try. I'm taking a rooted official Update (Version: 2.10.405.2) as my base. Adding busybox runparts, the /data/app functionality, a2sd+, the custom bootanimation functionality etc. isn't a problem. Removing some apps like Maps, Facebook, Teeter (and so on) and adding some like Rom Manager, Neocore or Quadrant isn't a problem, too. But if I want to implement a theme like the Carbon Espresso Mod or a theme I made with the UOT Kitchen I'm getting bootloops at booting the phone. Here's what I do: I unzip the folder (for example a theme made with the UOT Kitchen) and I copy over the framework-res.apk from the unzipped folder to my Working Folder of the Kitchen (to system/framework) and I overwrite the original framework-res.apk.
And NO: I didn't choose a battery mod or a bootanimation in the UOT Kitchen....
Hope you guys can help me
I might be wrong but doesn't the new file have to be signed? I know there is a signing option in the kitchen.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
It's a system .apk so it doesn't have to be signed.
I can't shed any light on the subject, but here's a bump.
Are you replacing the whole "framework-res.apk" file? If so then you will need to resign your entire ROM. Why? When you change a system file ("framework-res.apk", "com.htc.framework.apk", "twframework-res", "rosie.apk", etc.) it no longer has a matching "signature" for all the files it serves images to. Plug your phone into your computer and open up "ddms" in your android_sdk > tools folder to watch what happens when the phone boots up.
A workaround (The way I do it, it's more fun IMHO) is to open up your .apk files in 7zip (or if you're on a mac BetterZip) and add the images from the themed .apk to your stock .apk. This way makes it so your original .apk has the same signature as your other system files yet has the new images from the other files that you wanted. I've had a lot of luck with this method. I don't know if it will still work if you change any .xml files as I have not messed with those yet.
I've subscribed to this thread so if you have any questions post back here or you can PM me if you want. I'm on XDA all day, every day so I'll try to help as much as I can.
Thanks for all the answers! Especially to you, mbobino. Is there a way to sign the whole Rom new? When I make my Rom at the End, the Kitchen signs it automatically, doesn't it? The idea with the images is very good, but if I want to implement a theme like Carbon Espresso it isn't that easy, 'cause Carbon Espresso isn't just a few images. There are several .xml's etc.
The reason you boot loop is mis matched resource ID's in the public.xml file. If you decompile the framework using apktool after adding your images using an archiver then recompile apktool will update the public file for you which saves you from pulling ID''s for every image. I have a video tutorial of how to set up apktool and decompile framework in my Rom thread. Changing images in app apk's won't cause you to boot loop just messing with the framework will.

The kitchen signs the .zip that you flash when you build it. It does not sign any .apks for you on its own. However, there is an option to sign .apks within the kitchen.
In my opinion, taking all of the images and figuring out how it all works is fun. I feel like I've already learned quite a bit from just digging around and moving files around.
As for the .xml files, you can decompile the .apk and edit them and then recompile the .apk. I'm actually looking into this today. It sounds like some work but hopefully I'll get it figured out.
Sounds like fun indeed So, I'll just have to try it. Where can I find the "Settings" for the Notification Bar? Thanks
The variois status*.xml files in the res/layout folder of the framework-res.apk and the status*.smali files in the services.jar.
What? If I want to implement a Theme made with the UOT Kitchen (without battery) I should just copy over those files to my existing res-framework.apk OR copy over the whole res-framework.apk (the new one) and sign it?
EDIT: Just tried it with a theme from the UOT Kitchen and it worked perfectly. I've just signed the res-framework.apk and the htc.com.resources.apk (or whatever) in the Kitchen, flashed it on my Phone and it just worked like a Charm. But I have got a 50% Transparent Notification Bar and all the system icons (Battery and time/date) are still black and not transparent! Has anyone got a idea where to change this? (.xml or whatever)...And does anyone know where I can find the HTC Wallpapers? I want to change them a little bit

HeyItsLou, I looked up your ROM thread but couldn't locate the video tutorial.... do you mind providing the url? Specifically, I am trying to add to the list of wallpapers in a ROM. (I have setup apktool but not sure where/which folder to add my wallpapers in Framework-res.apk Launcher.apk before recompiling/signing). Thanks.
You COULD use the Theme Porter by daneshm90. It will only port the PNG s for it so things like clock colour n stuff will be lost, but it will get you alot closer...

Thanks! But like I've written before in my Edit, I made it. The bigger theme (Carbon Espresso) wasn't a problem, too. I just had to sign the .apk's in system/app and system/framework (the kitchen doesn't do it by itself. You have to choose the option to sign a single .apk and then look, where the system/framework .apk's are...). Works great now!

I don't sign system files or apps and apkmanager among other threads I've read say not to. Im on a rooted backflip. I find I only have to sign third party apps to install.
Why do you have to sign YOUR files?
Sorry for answering that late. Had a few things to do, so I wasn't online very often
If you want to cook an App into your Rom (NeoCore for example), then you don't have to sign it. You can just copy it into data/app. But if you want to change the whole framework-res.apk of the Rom, you have to sign it. 'Cause if you don't sign it, you'll get a Bootloop. The framework-res.apk is a very important part of the Rom, so it has to "fit" to the others. There are some ID's which have to match. Otherwise it won't work. That's how I understood it
Another Question: Has anybody got an Idea where to change the things that are coming, when you first start the phone with a new Rom (the "installation" of the Rom)? I wan't to write: "Welcome to DomiKamp's Rom!" Or something like that...

I was curious about this too. I always edit the framework-res of any ROM I flash using a custom set of images I have and have never signed the apk afterwards and it has always worked. Maybe cause I'm only replacing images? I usually do this with framework-res and twframework-res and they both can sometimes grow by 1MB or more. Just my experience.

I think that in order to do the "welcome to" thing you'll have to edit the update-script file. I'm not 100% on it though. Look at a cm Rom and see what all is in there.

Will flash fine. Just replace the update binary with the one from the ROM you have on your phone.
i have used it 6 times on the atrix, twice on kennethpens gb leak and 4 times using cherrypi.
follow the directions in the uot and all should be good. you will run into recovery error (Status 0) while flashing it so to save you some time there is a workaround in the uot how to section:
WORKAROUND for recovery error (Status 0):
1. Unzip your ROM and find
META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary file
2. Put this file in the UOT zip (overriding UOT's file)

so yea unzip the uot file and replace the update-binary file in uot file with the one in your rom then zip it and flash should work like a charm. CaelanT said the same thing above but i just wanted to be clear.
using alien 4 i can't get it to work.
i've used the alien 4 theme files, and replace the update binary with the one found in that theme, and with the one found in the alien 4 rom. no luck..
i also used the files from the alien 4 rom, and replaced the update binary with the one in the rom. no luck..
every time i get error 0. this was the same issue on alien 2. never tried alien 3 but i assume it wouldn't be much different

upload the framework-res.apk and systemui.apk from the rom zip your on (build 4) create the theme, download it, unzip it and replace the update binary with your roms then rezip it and name it whatever you want. i have done this with at(honeycomb)rix rom that iam on with 3 different themes i have made and they all worked.
I've done exactly that 5 or 6 times.. am I missing something simple like one of the options to the left on the upload page..
How are you zipping the files up after changing the update binary?
Assimilated via WinBorg 4G
I just made one last night for the first time. I dis t unzip my file from UOT. I had unzipped the alien 4 rom to upload the frameworks so I just grabbed the updater file and put it where it goes via windows explorer... it worked without issue.

Unzip
Replace update binary
Install 7-Zip
Select all files and right click them
From dropdown select 7-Zip > Add to archive
Set archive format to 'zip' and compression to 'store'

<edit> Oh, wait.........I don't know Ubuntu. Is there a 7-zip version for this?
Doesn't look like it. The problem could be the way you are re-zipping the files.
well what i did is reflash the rom (alien 4) and not install the alien 4 theme. then i did exactly what the site says to do and it worked fine. so apparently trying to mod the alien theme, or overwrite the alien theme with uot framework just doesn't work. hell if i know why, nor do i care. it works! =D
Anyone have any idea why my battery icons didn't work? Everything else works... well acutually not the 5 bar signal bar and 4G icon but that's because they probably weren't in the icon set I picked. But I chose a rather stock looking battery icon with a different color scheme and it still shows up as green?
I'm running Alien4 without the theme, I even did Notach's 1% Battery Mod and no Carrier mod but when I re-applied my UOT theme it of course over-wrote it.
I assume I just need to use that systemui.apk and framework.res and then make my modifications?

[Q] UOT Kitchen

So guys did everything and downloaded the UOT I created. When trying to install it as a zip I had an issue. When I went to install zip from sd card it showed the UOT file but when I clicked on it, it just opened up in to 4 further folders. The system and meta and all that. So then I went to install zip from internal sd card and it appeared to work however it said status 0 and installation aborted... Whats going on?
Edit: Saw the workaround where you put the binary file in the UOT Zip, did so and now I get the "Bad error."
Everything is good thanks guys
I don't have any experience with UOT kitchen, but I do know update zips. After you placed the binary in the zip, did you resign it? Not doing so may be your problem.

My ROM does not have an update-binary.....
I have made progress though.. Seems like the battery mod was conflicting with the CRT animation.
I was able to cook a moded black status bar with some tweaks.....
Anyway to remove the "Verizon Wireless" from the stock status bar? it bleeds threw....
Also... have trouble with boot animation..... it will not flash no mater what I try.
Its located in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
the flashable zip from UOT gives an systax error.... can I just manualy delete the old bootain and copy the new one pulled from the UOT Zip?
Can I do this with a root explorer? or do I need to do ADB?
**EDIT** I was able to delete system/media/bootanimation.zip and put the new "Bios Boot" one there... boots up like an old PC... its awesom... now if I can get the status bar overlap fixxed... and icons and battery

UOT Kitchen mods DON'T work on the SGS II???

Hi there! I tried to mod the appearance of my phone using the UOT Kitchen. But am stuck after creating my UOT ZIP file. I assumed we have to flash the UOT Zip file using CWM Recovery mode. I tried that, and it fails to install the zipped files due to a "signature error". Any idea how to fix this?
The UOT Kitchen site does give a workaround to this problem, saying in case of error, we can manually replace the META-INF file zipped inside the UOT file with the Meta-Inf file which can be extracted from the phone's ROM. I am on KF3 Rooted, and extracting the KF3 ROM only gives some Bin files......so my problem is how to find the original META-INF file? Anyone knows this?
So no one has used the UOT Kitchen mods for their SGS II here? No answers?
Do you have a link to the UOT Kitchen thread?
Hi, Johncmolyneux. Thanks for your reply. Yes, now I have it and have posted my question there also. But that thread has 426 pages and am not sure how soon I'll get a reply there. So I'm hoping someone may see my query here also and reply. So waiting for a useful answer on either of these threads now. Thanks.
I installed a UOT Kitchen Mod, my 1st time
I probably did something wrong...unless they just don't work but I doubt that because one or 2 of the options are for SGS2 specific roms
Anyways, I got stuck in boot loop and had to restore everything
I might try again later when I have more info about it

SystemUI.apk
twframework-res.apk
pick what ever u want...if your rom supports costum bootanimation u can do that 2. but the lockscreens aint working anyway enough to make the ROM diferent
as said a few post up; always upload framework-res.apk , systemUI.apk and twframework-res.apk when generating a theme with UOT Kitchen.
Also DO NOT forget to always wipe cache and dalvik-cache in CWM prior to apply the generated zip (wipe cache, dalvik-cache then flash the zip, and after that reboot ).
a few selected set of icons sometimes not apply properly with our SGS2 (kalagas mainly is a bit tricky for that )
if manually correcting the unchanged images is outside of your possibilities, ask in the UOT thread, they are generally really helpfull and Mendozinas respond generally really quickly
as Hunteres said, lockscreen don't work for us, as Quick settings in the notifications tab(that is for Sense Rom) everything else works generally like a charm
All done yesterday itself. There was only a small issue of disabling signature verification and Mendozinas replied pretty quickly. Other than Boot Animation, Lock screen everything else works on a Stock KF3 Kernel. You don't even need to wipe the cache/Dalvik cache before flashing. It's optional & just a precaution.

UOT Kitchen works for the Photon - Updated 9/3

I just created a theme using the UOT Kitchen. Not all options can be used since they don't yet support qhd resolution, but that is supposed to be fixed soon. I was able to create a theme with the following elements: digital battery indicator (10% increments), Dr. Droid icons, Rudolf screen animations (great feature), Ubuntu font and Tesseract boot animation. Note that the boot animations won't fill the screen because they don't support qhd yet, so pick one that will always be black around the edges to look right. Also, I wasn't able to get some icon packs to flash, so I'm not sure which ones will work other than the one I used.
When you make a theme with boot animation, be sure to select the Galaxy S GB ROM. Also, when you upload your files, you have to select amend scripting and have Patch9 selected. There's no need to select the theme preview option for theme chooser since our ROM doesn't have this.
I'm running a rooted, locked stock ROM with cwm bootstrap recovery. You must be rooted and have some type of recovery. Be sure to wipe cache and delvik cache before flashing and nandroid a backup before you flash just in case something goes wrong. Happy themeing!
Edit:
Here's a link to my theme described above.

Yeah, I've tried the Kitchen, but when I go to flash, I get E: Error in /emmc/UOT....(status 0) Installation aborted. Any ideas?
No idea what that could be dude... nine flashed good.. but all it did was change my font even though I added a boot animation, icons, and also played with the status bar...

According to UOT, they say:
WORKAROUND for recovery error (Status 0):
1. Unzip your ROM and find
META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary file
2. Put this file in the UOT zip (overriding UOT's file)
But would you know how to unzip and find that binary file?

I used CWM. BTW, thanks for the instructions on the update...it was really helpful! Who knew that just wanting to change that ugly-ass battery indicator in the notification bar would be such a problem..(at least for me)

Yeah, that's the explanation from UOT...I'm such a noob. I'm just on the stock ROM and wasn't sure where to find that update-binary file to replace the UOT file with.

Be sure to select amend scripting when you upload your files, it's not checked by default.

Yeah I didn't do that before. I'll try it out! Thanks!
UPDATE: Yup, it worked. Thanks so much for the reminder to select the amend scripting...I seriously need to go back to school and learn how to read.
Amend scripting is apparently no longer supported by my version of CWM (v5.0.2.7-photon3). Any ideas? Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it seemed preferable to do this than start a new one.
