hi guys,
I am living in area, which have very poor 3G connection, so i am looking for method to limit the arc to use only 2G connection. Is there any application or a way that Arc only use 2G network? SE has somehow changed the default "Mobile Network" in settings, it is only possible to choose "only 3g" but not "only 2g".
I have an unrooted Arc with android 2.3.3.
In the Phone application, dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone settings, and under network type select "GSM only", that should do the trick.
You might want to try "GSM Auto (PRL)", if 3G is indeed very poor, the phone should (in theory) not use it in your area, but it would switch to it when you go to places with better coverage.
This is not the Q&A forum! Or you don't care guys?

Sorry, when i made this thread, i thought i had to post it here, because it has something to do with application. But now i think, you are right, i should have posted it in Q&A. It seems that your Arc is branded by "3". I am living in Denmark, my Arc is also "3" branded. They have horrible connection in DK. I think you do not have this poor 3G connection problem, because you might have flashed with the generic rom.

Hi,
Apologies for this question, but i cant get 3G sign in my mobile, while other Nokia n73 can get it. I updated my radio to v1.43, and still no [3G] sign...
In some areas i get [G] which means GPRS signal, and in other areas i got [E] which i don't know what does it mean... Any ideas??
Thx in advance
E = Edge...
Thanks Madcap... But as far as i know that Edge (EGPRS) is an extended version of GPRS whilst 3G is based on WCDMA.
My question now is why my Nokia n73 Reading always 3G, and my HTC is not reading it??? Is there is something wrong in HTC? or i must do some settings for that one?
Thx

Hello,
You say that your Nokia can receive a 3G signal and the Hermes cannot - are they both using SIM cards from the same provider and if not then do both providers supply a 3G signal where you are trying to use the Hermes?
If you should be able to receive a 3G signal on your current provider then I'd suggest you try the following:
1. Check the settings of the Hermes Phone. Try looking at the band selection setings by going to Settings - [Personal] Phone - Band Tab then checking that the Network type is set to Auto. The screenshot below shows the screen that I mean. If this is set to GSM then change it to Auto and see if that fixes the problem. If not then try...
2. Force use of 3G. Even with Auto selected your Hermes handset may be using 2G because that signal is much stronger than the 3G signal. You can force the handset to try 3G only by using a 3rd party application such as Bandswitch (an excellent product by Daniel Herrero - see his posts here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844&highlight=bandswitch). You can download Bandswitch here: http://commmgrpro.com/_wsn/page2.html. Try using this application to set the handset to 3G and see if that works.
If you should have a 3G signal but none of this helps then it seems you have a problem that may need warranty attention. Is the handset new?
Hope this helps
Hello Tony,
Thank you for your reply. I tried what you advised. Still Cant Capture the 3G signal...
Also, i tried an application called "fieldtest_157.exe". It is described somewhere in this group. I can't find any signal (zero values) for anything related to WCDMA, UMTS, and 3G
This is weird.. I just went into settings>phone .. and there is no BAND tab.. wtf?

Hi Mike,
Have added this reg tweak. It added WCDMA & a couple of protocols in the band section of phone settings. Non of them is working... Is it possible that my radio has a problem? I'm using GPRS very well, and i have excellent GSM connections... What could be the problem?
hi all,
i plan to buy a mozart but i am wondering if i can put it permanently into 3g signal. we have 3g here in our location, i have an android and i put it permanently to 3g, when i tried mozart, it does not have feature, it just has dual band, so it switches to 2g everytime which i found frustrating. this is my only gripe with it. is there anyway to set it to 3g?
thanks!
Yes it does have 'Permanent' 3G, just like the iPhone, it has a option which you can turn on in the settings, i also hated that Android did not have a 3G switch either!
it says in the settings "when available" do if there is no or weak signal, it reverts to the 2g signal. i want it to be 3g everyday.

Simple. Just go into phone dialer, key in ##3282#
then goto/tap on ... at the bottom on the right hand side. Under 'settings' you'll find the menu to change it whether 'automatic', '2g only' or '3g only'.
Good luck.
Hello people!
I just got my new RAZR, in Spain it has just been released with Movistar carrier.
Well... The thing is 3G network in Spain is terrible, there is very bad signal even living in the city center.
I can notice that the RAZR's receiver is not as good as other phones, for instance Xperia Play (which hardware is one of the best I have ever seen, sound, camera, signal, and screen are great, not CPU and GPU lol), which got much better wifi and phone signal, but that is not the question.
I can't choose only 2G connection in settings/wireless connections/mobile network/select network it only appears "only 3G (better performance) and "Automatic default", and the signal is always changing between "H" , "3G" and "U" ...
I just want it to connect to GPRS or however it's called, just as I did with my iPhone 3GS which i could turn off 3G and turn on whenever I wanted
Is there any widget, toggle or something yo change between 2G and 3G?
Sorry for my language
No widgets, no apps and no solution?
Extended controls did not work, it just shortcutted to the "mobile network" menu...
EDIT:
Motorola Support confirms in the unlocked factory version exists "Only 2G" option in network settings...
Must be a Movistar customization setting...
¿Does anyone know how to install factory rom?
try typing *#*#4636#*#* and you should be able to choose 2g network

Or to make it slightly easier, you can download the phone info app from the market and select from a drop down menu

Hi, I have a xperia mini pro(sk17a) and my problem is that the 3G don't work in my cell phone, I was reading ont the internet and maybe my cell phone doesn't support 850Mz band(I am from Peru and 3G works in 850mz).
Is there any solution? or maybe there is any way(software) that my cell phone can work with 850MZ
Settings - wireless and networks - mobile networks and check if there is 3G chosen. If yes and phone doesn't use it, then maybe no 3g in your area.

The question is, if topic starter means internet connection or 3G signal.
Which phone do you have, Sk17i or Sk17a? Both are Xperia Mini Pro, but have different 3G bands. You can check it in Settings - About phone and there is model number.
the problem is that when I activate the enable data in my cell phone(to use the mobile network to connect to internet) I only see the letter "E" that means 2G(Edge) and never appear "3G" or "H"(HSPA), and I Know that the problem is in my cell phone , because I have other cell phone that can connect to 3G without any problem but my xperia mini pro "SK17a" cannot.
for this reason I think that the problem is my cell phone don't support 850 band
I know some samsung galaxy phone have the same probleme ,don't support 850 band , and they can change their modems to make the the cell phone could support 850 band. but I don't find a modem for the sk17a with android 2.3.4.
features of my cell phone
-xperia mini pro sk17a
-network mode wcdma(preferred)/GSM
-android 2.3.4
-baseband version 8X55A-AAABQOAZM-203028D-58
-compilation number 4.0.2.A.0.58
-type: AAD-3880104-BV

mine is sk17i
Sk17a supports 3G 850 MHz band, so it has to be another problem.
Settings-Wireless and Networks-Mobile Networks - Mobile operators
Can it find your operator's 3G network? If yes, try to manually register it, just click on it. If not, then your phone cannot find it. My LWW doesn't always connect to 3G, if it isnt strong enough.
I have same problem(sk17a). My other device working 3G.
What the defference between "3G" and "E"DGE?
Just speed only?
Did you find a solution?

Hi, did you find a solution? I have exactly the same situation and I don't know what to do. I really appreciate if you could help me!
I know this is a old thread just wanted to post this link if the problem isn't solved yet,

Flashing sk17i baseband might solve your problem
You might need to fix your APN settings, which are located at Settings- More- Mobile networks- Access Point Names. Google your carrier and APN (for example, "ATT APN"). I came up with a couple of different configurations which I saved in separate APN names and played with them until I figured out what worked best for me. Hope that helps you out.

Hi,
I am an android noob and would really appreciate some help here. I recently acquired a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i running on Gingerbread 2.3.3. The phone however has failed to live up to my expectations as its connectivity to the internet is very terrible. The mobile networks in my location provide either 3G or HSDPA. The phone however is predominantly on EDGE and even then there is no connectivity with EDGE. Only Opera Mini manages to pull down pages after many minutes of requesting the page and constant refreshing. The same SIM when inserted in a USB Modem dongle gives stable HSDPA internet connectivity. When connected to HSDPA though, the phone's connectivity i trouble free. My question is: Why am I unable to browse or use any of the apps (facebook, play store, twitter, bbc news, Y! Messenger etc) with and EDGE connection? I have tried to restrict connectivity to only WCDMA in settings but this only results in long periods of loss of network on the phone. Help please. I need the phone to operate on EDGE as well as HSDPA as most parts of Nigeria has EDGE coverage with HSDPA only being rolled out in stages in select locations. Thanks

Try to change the network mode to GSM/WCDMA preferred.nd in ur area if there is no full coverage of hsdpa.then the network mode fluctuates to edge to hsdpa.so if u want nly 2g.then select GSM only.then the network wnt fulctuate to hsdpa.
if helped hit thanks

Lke you said if its hard to get a 2g connection the x10 may not be capable of it for some reason in your area :/
If u want to switch between 2g n 3g ,that depends on.ur network provider ( I in India went and ask Docomo service company if I could switch between 2g( EDGE) AND 3g . I got a flat ' no ' reply) .
If u only want 2g go to network settings, and change to GSM only. It may work provided ur service provider doesn't use 3g on it.

Just switch your network to GSM only in network settings and it would only pick up 2G.
