I just received my Archos 101 yesterday, and after loading a few apps, some music/video on the external sd card, froyo, and LauncherPro, the tablet is extremely slow - to the point where it's not as 'responsive' as it used to be. Has anyone found anything (e.g. lagfix) that makes it a bit faster? I want to love this tablet because of the hell I had to go through with Amazon to get it, but it's really making me pissed off as of lately. Any help would be great - thanks in advance.
install os monitor, sort processes by cpu load and tell us if anything is eating all the CPU
http://www.appbrain.com/app/os-monitor/com.eolwral.osmonitor
I noticed the same thing on my A70. I switched from Launcher Pro to ADW launcher and it's noticably smoother without uninstalling anything else.
Why does os monitor show it is using 40% of my cpu?
Go to Settings / About Device
Register and upgrade your firmware to 2.0.71.
Go To Settings / About Device Power Management /
click on Overdrive
Go To Settings / Repair & formating / calibrate touch screen and accelerometer
do a google searck for gAppsinstaller_v4.apk
keep clicking untill it is installed on your device.
You will now have full google market.
Go to google market - Get Dolphin Browser - make it your default
go to google market - get vplayer beta to play all flash and other videos
recomended google market - get videos
google market - i music
Should be flying now - If running slow - go to desktop - click on system monitor - stop all programs - should be flying again -
tip - firefox is really slow and crashes?? dont install
When using touch screen never push hard - A light quick brushing action works best - or a light quick tap - always light on your fingertips -
tip - do not try to root - not necessary with overdrive setting - full root will come someday. No root is working right now for this firmware.
Good luck
David
i almost forgot
dont forget to go to android market and download and install adobe flash.
Try to erase all Mediafiles and reboot.
If your A101 is faster then you have a File that breaks the mediascanner.
Also if you are still on 2.1 the Mediascanner is running at every boot and scanns every file.
This has been fixed with the last FW.
Alright I did everything you guys have recommended and it is signficantly faster now. I think my biggest problem was that I didn't realize how sensitive the screen is compared to my Captivate. Also, is there any point in setting the cpu to 1000mhz using z4root/setcpu? (haven't been able to get that to work anyways, z4mod just freezes).
I got my Arcos 101 about a week ago and noticed the horrible sluggishness too. I tried doing the firmware update to Froyo and it was still sluggish. I'm now sure exactly what the option was called, but after the Froyo update, I went into settings and did a full format on the device. It reloaded everything from scratch, but I lost all of the 3rd party apps. So I called Archos and they pointed me to ftp://support.archos.com. There is a file called A101 HDD Contents.zip Just download it and unzip the folders. In one of the folders is the Archos customizations (apk files). Just install whatever programs you want and you will be back in business.
One other thing, you will need to set your CPU speed to Performance to get the 1ghz speed. The 2.0.71 build downclocks the cpu to 800mhz.
Oh, and I'm in the same boat with not being able to Root my device. Please z4root creator, fix this.
@dijitalm:
You don't need root for 1Ghz as you can easily set this in the normal settings.
And before you try again, neither z4root nor any other sw that uses rageagainstthecage is working.
The main reason I need root is to get my Tablet to see Ad-Hoc Networks. Specifically I have WIFI Router on my phone and my laptop sees/connects to the phone fine, but the tablet will not see the access point. I know that there are fixes for this that people have come up with but it requires root access.
Oh, and I have a Windows based phone (Touch Pro 2), so I can't get the bluetooth tethering option to work either.

Hmm. Others have gotten WM phones to work with BT tethering.
When I try to associate the Archos 101, they attempt to pair and then my phone says "it (the tablet) doesn't have any services that we are interested in". That statement on my phone is so enfuriating because I'll be the judge of what services I'm interested in having my phone use. My old XV6800 (Titan) did bluetooth tethering like a charm, and if it were still alive, I'd even consider going back to it.
Yup I'd be happy non rooting it if I could just get tethering to work.

I tried what is on post #5 here and this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10022941&postcount=4
so far, the combination of both things have made a big difference in the performance of my A70. It's a pretty smooth experience now.
ADW and Launcher Pro
I'm glad my help with Launcher Pro helped you. I installed the new ADW Launcher EX yesterday. I will have to say, It is faster depending on the settings. I used the "Fast" [reset profile. Right off the bat it was flying faster than launcher pro. I would suggest that launcher now that it has been revamped.

Hi
I have just installed a costum rom when I go into market i can not find angry birds - can you help - do I have to change market ?
After the update from today, it dissapear from the Android Market. It'll come back later, ( i hope ) i've got a apk from another htc desire. The Rovio team said it 'll be on getjar.com
I also don't have it right now, and I haven't installing anything. I think it's Google-sided problem.
Havnt seen it today either. Must be updates! I hope...
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
the .apk file itself is avalible on the Net, just google for angry birds 1.5.1.1 apk and you're done. They added a grat option of disabling background for better performance. Runs very smooth for me
Yup, the official place to get it other than the market is getjar.com
and it runs MUCH smoother after disabling background animations

Can you help me?
I have a Wildfire and i want to download the angry birds 1.5.1.1 that is compatible with wildfire. So i downloaded it and when i want to install it, i have an error ,,application not installed". Please help me!!
Thank you!
Check if you've got 'install from unknown sources' enabled in applications settings. If this won't work, try downloading angry birds from elsewhere.
I tried updating mine by installing the new one over the old version. The application couldn't install so had to uninstall it and then install the new version. It worked but lost all the levels I completed

In the future back up with Titanium Backup and then just restore the app data!
Realise that the file from getjar.com is larger but more updated and optimized and smoother especially overclocking 700mhz. Shame we still have to do the lockscreen procedure, it'd be smoother without the ad bar I'm the way.

Just found this new market version on the internet
You need to be running android 2.2+ for it to work
Just install as normal apk (does not apply to 3.2.0)
From my experince it looks nice but isn't realy made for or "slow" legend so it's not that smooth as the older market (does not apply to 3.2.0)
You can always try it, if you like it you keep it, if you dont you uninstall the market update (does not apply to 3.2.0)
Thanks to QUBiCA for posting the latest market, this will probably the latest update by me (most markets update by themselves anyway)
Click me to download 3.4.4
3.2.0 Install instructions
*Set up adb on your pc (need root, not possible to have 3.2.0 without root atm)
*Boot into clockworkmod recovery and mount system
* On pc use "adb push insert here location of Vending.apk on pc /system/app
* Reboot and you will have market version 3.2.0
15/10/2011
updated to 3.2.0 'Vending.apk'(faster then the previous 3.0 markets)
NEED TO INSTALL WITH ADB ATM
*24/08/2011
updated to 3.1.3 (thanks to Asovse1 for the link)
*24/07/2011*
updated to latest version 3.0.27 (if it gives any problems let me know)
*05/01/2012*
updated to 3.4.4 (thanks to QUBiCA)

nice. Thanks man!
It looks better than the old version. I like it.
I like it, but can't for the life of me figure out how to update an app!!
It tells me that I have an app that needs updating, but I can't see any option anywhere to perform that task.
Am I missing something obvious??
in the markte, klick menu and than my apps
Too slow but great design

Issues with my legend since I updated to new market
I've been having screen issues with my legend touch screen (it becomes buggy, glitches and sometimes completely unresponsive to touch) since I updated to the new android market 3.0. Not sure if it was coincidental that my screen problems occured after I successfully installed this app. I have seen a lot of complaint about the legends screen on youtube and other blogs and most have said it a hardware problem (digitizer) and though I believed it might be the case until recently when I noticed (after reverting to the old market app) that all my downloaded app which used to be present/visible wasn't receiving updates and now they have simply disappeared from my phones downloaded apps list on the market. I only see my paid apps on my apps list now
I have tried all possible troubleshooting fix. I have done both hard and soft reset but still no luck with it working as well as it used to. The phone sometimes works well but other times works like it has a mind of its own!! Can't afford sending it in for hardware repairs and/or parts replacement so i'm willing to exhaust all possibilities that this is or is not a software issue.
Need advise/guide Please :-(
Since updating to Market v3.0.27 I've had trouble updating to the latest versions of some apps. Specifically
- Smart Keyboard Pro 4.4.1
- Beautiful Widgets 3.65
For those apps the Market reported there was an update available, but only the Open and Uninstall options were available, no Update option.
I finally used Titanium Backup to restore Market v2.36 (just the app, not the data) and with that version of the Market I was able to update the 2 apps mentioned above.

Today I had the same issue with Sound Hound. I cleared cache and data for Market (I had to agree to the terms again when it started), but it didn't help. I restored 2.3.6 and was able to upgrade Sound Hound with no problem.

1.Can anyone give me reasons why I should do so?
If you think I should, what are the features in my current Android that would be missing in CyanogenMOD? Aside from SWYPE.
2. Does older versions of CyanogenMOD have SWYPE?
3. If I don't like it, would it be easy to switch back to Android and make it seem like it was never tampered with, Samsung settings and all
4. Is it really less expensive to have internet access via wifi tethering from mobile phone? How so?
...Don't carriers charge a lot for internet connection? I'm asking because I think CyanogenMod has wifi tether feature?
Please answer ALL questions.
Thanks guys.
I'm using Samsung Galaxy Ace, Android 2.3.4
Already rooted I think, I have the Superuser icon...

1. Reasons:
> It's wicked fast. Even a non-barebones CyanogenMod is really smooth.
> No annoying Samsung Bloatware (although this applies to generally all custom ROMs now)
> Tons of options. Just scroll into Settings > CyanogenMod Settings or the Spare Parts application, and there's a ****load of stuff you can customize.
Unreasons:
> Miserable battery life. 2/3rds the life of a stock ROM
> Generally less stable.
> I don't know if this is just me, but if I enable Portable hotspot, the battery will get really hot. Around 65 degrees.
Features on the Galaxy Ace missing from CM7
> TouchWiz and TouchWiz apps (duh)
> Samsung Apps
> AllShare
> And, by default, official CM doesn't include Google Apps (like Market, Gmail), but the KANG (unofficial) builds here do, so that's not an issue.
2. Nope. No version on CM have had or will have Swype preloaded.
3. Short answer: absolutely. Long answer: Nandroid Backup. ClockwordMod Recovery. Look it up.
4. It depends on your carrier. I use a semi-unlimited data (500MB data cap) for Rp35,000 (which is around US$3) a month.

performance comes at cost of battery
Simply try cyanogen mod then revert back to original or stock rom via odin

- Miserable battery life
- Generally less stable
I need to know, is this true for ALL custom ROM's? (MIUI, VillainROM, etc)

No..Its just related to cm7 based roms..btw MIUI is not yet available on sga
I would use the stock rom if it didn't keep rebooting any time I touched anything in the system folder.
The CM settings are cool too, like status bar brightness, long back to close, notification power widget tweaks etc.

Cyanogen is more about stability not features.(their site seems to say so)
For me, maps does not work very well in CM.
samsung stock ROM is not that bad. eg browser has some nice features. also CM also got some nice features that stock browser lacks
I personally think android ROM are not really for customization. LOL
compared to jailbroken iphone customization.
It's really sad to see those called android customization are more off linux tweak(governor, file system, ....)
I don't know what's preventing dev from customizing android. (go look around what jb iphone can customize)
I always have to stay shut off whenever I meet jailbroken iphone users!!!
Also there should be some kind of cyanogen stores (which will run in cyanogen ROM).
Sorry if this is off-topic.
I recently got android 4.0.4 for my phone. Also, what apps help make it faster and what else can i do to make my phone faster?Btw the phone is rooted.

Don't touch the kernel if you are inexperienced in such things you will just screw the rom up... go into developement settings and overclock your cpu to 768mhz for a start. governer... smartass v2 should be fine. use a task manager to kill background apps etc. there are many things you can do but remember that 4.0 has higher requirements than our phone has so performance will always be an issue... if u want have a look into swap partitions, cpu overclocking, cpu governers, I/O Schedulers, Caching etc... there is so much to tweaking performance to get the most out of your device
When I stop apps that r running, they just come back within 5 seconds. Also, i am already at 768mhz. 768 mhz has made it a little faster, but some apps wont launch and just stop when i launch them. Is there a way to get them to work?

I really would suggest you change roms mate, either CyanogenMod 7.2 or 10.1
10.1 is Android 4.2 and 7.2 is 2.3.7
naturally 7.2 is fastest and most stable.
But why is it that some apps work and others dont?
How about increasing the ram? Can I do that?

You cannot increase the RAM like in a computer as it is attached to the motherboard directly. That link describes using a swap partition on the sd that acts kind of like ram but it is not ram itself, it is slower than ram and less efficent however swap can be useful. I have tried swap and noticed no real difference in performance at all but you could sure try it... just remember to enable swap in the cyanogenmod settings otherwise the partition will do nothing and u lose valuable sd card space

Use seeder app set to aggresive, no need to oc just set gov to performance. If you not use any ramscript use romtool box go to memory manager try optimum preset. And also go to sd booster to boost your sd speed cache.

Honestly, make an effort to purchase a new phone. I've had a i5000 foir almost a year and sometimes I almost went crazy due to its slowness.
You can try using a (fast) sdcard as supplementary memory, but it will be still slow. And no way to use a CyanogenMod later than 7.2. Stick with this at minimum.
But you can find really good bargains at ebay. Please consider it.
