Is it normal to face massive battery drain (40%) overnight? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently on checkrom revolution 1.0 KI4 with hardcore's latest speedmod k2-8. Have had this phone for ard 5 months now and u can call me a compulsive flasher since I'm always flashing the latest roms, kernels and firmwares.
Throughout these 5 months, this overnight battery drain issue has been bugging me relentlessly, regardless of the firmware or rom used. Typically my phone will be off in the morning if i leave it at anything below 50% charge when going to bed. In contrast i've read of many accounts of sub 5% overnight drains that has lead me to suspect some kind of mistake on my part rather then a fundamental flaw in the design of the phone/software. Would be great if the xda community could assist by giving some insight into this matter, for in sure some of you might be/have been experiencing the same issue and might have solved it or are awaiting similar insight as well.

no its not normal. I lose 1-2% over an 7-8 hour period when im sleeping.
Install betterbatterystats and see what your wakelocks are over night. Something is obviously keeping your phone awake. The usual culprits are being signed into latitude or facebook chat.

i would suggest either change kernel or better yet change roms...kernel i would suggest ninp 2.0.5..stable and good battery life..also if you use setcpu i can provide you with frequencies so you can test it..message me so i can give them to you..regarding betterbatterystats i would not use but as skimmingstones say use it and see what your wakelocks are cause ur stats do not sound right buddy

Jeez! 40% overnight? I once had 8/9% drain overnight and got annoyed. Install Better Battery Stats first to see what apps/processes are causing the wakelocks. Then go on to change kernel and SetCPU etc for further betterment, but at first see what's going on background, with the help of BBS.

Post up screenshots of battery usage please.
My sister was loosing 40% each night turned out to be the Hotmail app not sleeping!

LOL 40 % !? your phone is the best drain phone ever :/
maybe U can set your display to low brightness and look of your phone goes to deep-sleep mode (CpuSpy)

Dude,
Try also to calibrate battery.
Look at my signature.

not normal for me lolz

Not properly deep sleeping, 200mhz

Have been running unnamed 1.3.1 for about a week. Battery life is good, but it still drops pretty quickly while not being used. Cpuspy is reporting that the phone is spending over 30% of its time at 200mhz, and about 50% deep sleep. This includes my 4 hour work period when I barely even pick up my phone. Any ideas on a cause? I already deleted the Facebook App fyi. Thanks in advance.
I'd suggest installing BetterBatteryStats. You can get it on the Market or search here on XDA for a free version provided from the author.
Fully charge the phone and try not to use it at all for a few hours or more if possible. You can then go back into BBS and it will show you all the Wakelocks and Partial Wakelocks that are running since you last charged it.
You can also set a Custom Ref. point and it will wipe out all history and start over if you want to simply do it midday but you have to keep it running in the background or else you'll lose the Custom Ref. point. Hope that makes sense. BBS is a GREAT program to help identify what's eating away at your battery during sleep.
Also, keep in mind that anytime you have it plugged in and charging, it will never go into deep sleep. It will always be showing as time spent at 200Mhz instead.
.
I recommend upgrading to unnamed 1.3.2 and sirrah kernel 2.4.2 (whichever latest one is). I have and I get really great battery life. Tweaked kernels and stoophs FTW.
Thanks for the insight. Better battery stats is exactly the App I was looking for. Also, I have updated to 1.3.2, I tried siyah kernal for a bit, but I didn't notice a difference

Also, make sure to reset CPUSpy stats after removing it from the charger.
Charging inhibits deep sleep.

[Q] Diagnose High AOS

Hey guys, I'm experiencing extremely high AOS usage in the battery stats. It is almost always higher than Display Usage.
SETUP
Rom: HyDrOG3N-ICS 13.05
Kernel: SiyahKernel v3.2.5.1
Battery: Official 2000mah
I've got some UV/UC for CPU and GPU, I don't experience any freezes or slowdown's at all.
I've tried turning off BLN and it didn't affect the AOS usage which means that there must be something else contributing to the high AOS usage.
I've got sync on and some periodic (1hr interval) syncs such as weather. I've got an additional push account. [IMO, this shouldn't be part of AOS]
Does anyone have any ideas how I can find out the culprits for AOS?
betterbaterystats app install an c wats draining....

is that betterbatterystats ? or the normal battery stats in the ics options ?
depending on how much screen on time u have ur next big battery sucker will be Aos (since u stated that u have sync on) if the phone is idle most of the time...
in my case i see Aos usage thru the first half of the day being the most battery sucker, passing afternoon its display and calls with Aos after them and at night i have Aos climb back up top... why? because i leave the phone in my pocket most of the time except for when i need to call/send a msg thru whatever app/sms/mms..... or anything and that keeps the phone awake for that short time and then its back to idle in my pocket and the only thing working is Aos checking email and whatever is on in sync
dont be surprized to see it up top its only natural, but keep track of how much power u lose. Losing 0-5% of battery life an hour on idle(screen off/locked) depending on signal strength with sync on is normal... more than that and i would be looking for any wakelocks or whatever is causing the phone to lose so much battery juice.
i have seen bad modems use even more battery juice just trying to maintain a good signal even with data&sync off and 2g
Not sure how I managed to fix it. There wasn't any out of the ordinary wakelocks. I flashed the 3.2.8.2 siyah kernel and at the same time adjusted the polling rate of BMW. Seems like it was battery monitor widget battery polling rate that contribute to the AOS. I always thought that it would show up as a separate usage stat.

AOKP, ICS Battery life issues..

I've been using the latest gingerbread builds and I'm having great battery life, But I notice when I use AOKP or any kind of ICS rom my battery life isnt so great..
Is there a specific kernel you people are using? and What kernel settings are working the best for you?
Thanks!

Good news that you are not alone. Based on my premature calculation, only 10 out of 100 (that's 10% ) ICS ROM users have good - great battery life, meaning the rest is having worse. Mine is falling into that group. I never have great battery, only so-so and below average.
Also as Nick has mentioned, asking for which best is a NO NO here.
One might be good for me, doesn't mean it will be good for you and vice versa.
Try them all and pick one that best suite for you.
My 2 cents......I know you have read this several times - but battery life is really dependent on a lot of factors - your AT&T signal, rogue apps, data sync frequency, CPU governor etc. etc.
read Entropy's excelled thread on battery drain on this forum.
i tried out a few GB roms over the last few weeks and really did not notice any battery improvement over ICS.
Currently running cMIUI with xxkernel and it is really working out great as in the battery easily lasts for the whole day.
I remember when I was on stock GB I could go upto 2 days on single charge - but that may be due to the battery being brand new. I have read that the battery in SGS2 really degrades fast
I have 2% drain per hour when doing absolutely nothing, screen off, wifi off, gps off during 8 hours overnite.
While someone has reported having only 2% or 3% drain over 8 hours overnite.

Have you tried using "Better Batter Stats" to see what is causing the drain?
I have been using AOKP since Task brought it to us and I average 1% every two hours over nite.
Do you use the Facebook app? That sucker is hungry for your juice.

I got BBS v1.7 for a while, that was absolutely no help.
I installed BBS 1.8 for about a week. Based on their info, I got the "multipdp" along with some other things (such wake-lock) cranked up big time.
I read the Entropy thread, not much help.
Note: Wifi is off.
Maybe 3G/H+ keep toggling for sync process?
I do use facebook! haha. and I havent used better battery stats

I'd also recommend using CPU Spy in conjunction with Better Battery Stats to see if the phone is able to enter deep sleep.
I don't get as good as you. . .I average about 1% or less per hour overnight. But that's with wifi on, periodic syncing of 7 accounts, scheduled backups and cache cleaning going on.

My understanding is multipdp will show when apps are waking the radio to use cell data - each wake instance results in a minimum of 6 seconds of wakelock. Switching to wifi when you are idle "should" eliminate this wakelock.
I could be wrong here...dig into the known battery drainers thread from around the time the first ICS roms were being tried on the i777. There was some discussion of it...it is a renamed version of some other wakelock in GB.

That's what I said, "maybe 3G/H+ toggling".
I believed that if I left wifi on overnite, do nothing, I still had 2% drain per hour.
Let me completely turn off data tonite and see how thing goes.
errrrr I have a huge problem with my battery. I've been testing various ICS roms and kernels(aokp, foxhound, serendipidity, fluxxi Kernel, siyah 3.4.3.,Neak) and all of them with the exception of serendipity w/siyah kernel, drain my battery real fast.
Not really sure what the problem is but when I look at what's been using the battery its most of the time either screen (which is understandable) and android os? I went to bed last night leaving my phone at 100% and woke up to find it at 52%. When I looked at what was using the battery it displayed, 93% android os and only 3% cell standby??(btw Foxhound ICS, Siyah Kernel) Maybe I have to many things updating/syncing?
When I first got my phone, 2-3% battery drain overnight was one of the things that amazed me about stock gingerbread on the i777.
I've flashed alot of roms since then, and so far, no ROM can even touch that stat.

[Q] A Very very Wierd Problem...Please Help !

I was really suffering from massive battery drain....see here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933012
ive now found out that i am having a very wierd problem...My rom is showing some 30% battery while 4ext shows 50%......Sometimes it is exactly the opposite....Once i discharged my phone to 2% (rom reading) and when i saw in recovery it says 17%....
I have completed many many cycles of battery from charging to full....and discharge to 0.....Also i used the battery callibration app SEVERAL times!!!!........But nothing seems to work...
Can somebody help...Please
I am really suffering from massive battery drain http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933012 :crying:
Did you try to delete battery stats? Or use an app to improve battery life?
I have the same issue too when booting into recovery. I don't worry about it. I suggest the same as Ramjet in your other thread.

I had this issue with my old battery and old charger,
Now I dont use my phone while charging , I charge other batteries with the wall charger while using other ones and everything is fine now.... battery % seems to be same in both android and recovery.
I have that same issue too. Lol maybe the recovery can't read the battery correctly. It'll show up higher in recovery and then when I reboot, it will read the same way like in recovery. Tried numerous batteries with the same result. Although I havnt tried battery calibrating. Ill give that a shot.
Is there any solution ??
Try klect's solution and go into recovery, wipe battery stats. Then let your battery drain and die. Then charge your battery back to 100% with no interuptions like pulling your phone off the charger too soon. When you wipe your batt stats you are getting ready to recaliberate your battery. After you let it charge to 100 percent. Let it drain to 0 a couple times to recondition your battery.
You do know that the evo 3D gives around 3 hrs of screen time dont you? even on stock rom on normal usage. If you have the wifi on all the times you'll get around 2:30 maybe 3 on a full charge.
Your battery certainly is draining faster than usual but have you tried keeping it idle and seeing what kind of drain you get? From that screenshot in the other thread it seems like your phone is getting some heavy wifi browsing or something (and do check if facebook or email apps are the culprit. Having push email on drains a lot)
And the recovery/rom reading wrong stats happens all the time. just recalibrate your battery like these good folks here have already suggested
Yes i keep wifi on all the time...
But once i kept my locked for abot 3 hours after full charge...when i unlocked it showed 99%...i was happy and i didn't do anything just surfing my screens it dropped very very fast to some 70 % !!!!
Also please hit our thank you buttons please. Even if you didn't get the exact answers you wanted. It's appreciated for helping one another.
you really should check your apps battery usage using one of the apps ramjet73 told you about
ramjet73 said:
There are a bunch of tips here.
Usually that kind of drain is caused by an app. Try running a stock ROM for a day or two and see if the issues go away. Or use one of the battery monitoring apps (BetterBatteryStats, SystemPanel Standard, Battery Monitor Widget) to determine which app is causing your drain.
It may take some work on your part to isolate the problem since there is no global solution to battery problems.

top culprits are mostly facebook, email exchange, google maps and pretty much anything that syncs alot
Also try using you phone on min brightness auto brightness is also a battery killer
I cant beleive no one asked you this but which kernel are you using? And is it overclocked?
I am on mwakious 13.1 default...no changes to it

battery drains overnight

hello people, first of all know how to understand me I'm kind of new to this
My main problem is that when I leave the pocof1 to sleep when I go to sleep, I wake up every day with 30-35% less battery (I make sure there are no applications in 2 plane or open)
I think that the battery problem is not because when checking the use during the night, there is no type of jump, nor excessive consumption of any app
I had the problem with official Miui and crdroid
Any ideas? Should I try another kernel? Never change it and I know little or nothing about it
You can use Better Battery Stats (free on XDA) take logs properly and post it in it's XDA thread for analysis. Could be poorly coded apps keeping the CPU awake causing battery drain. I have experienced zero issues in crDroid over the 3+ years I have used it almost exclusively.
