when I had the SGS2 and I stopped all the running apps to close them out I also went to the ram tab and stopped whatever was running in that tab and it always showed like 19 apps running every time, So if I shut down all those running memory what was running in the memory to show 19 then i would do it again and it'll show 2-3 and shut that down how were all these running ?
How was that possible I clearly shut down what was in use and in memory it said 19
I don't have the SGS2 anymore.

If you don't have it anymore then why not start off by asking a different and more logical question?
(I am not even sure if I can count to 19 right now. )
But if I had the same problem you had before getting rid of your phone then I would get rid of my phone too!

because I'm out a phone and I keep looking at the iphone 4s and this SGS2 I'm looking to buy outright so to save my AT&T upgrade for the iphone 5 LOL

I guess this device is as screwed up ! because if it weren't you would have answered the question and you know dam well what i'm talking about.....................
The UI on this device is no where near iOS not even close, IMO No wonder Jobs wanted to destroy Android besides it being stolen
correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you're trying to find out why some apps are still in memory even after you attempt to close them? If so, Android does not manage memory the way you would think it should. Just because an app is in memory doesnt mean its actively using it. Android likes to keep apps in memory that it feels it will need soon, so it will load faster for the user. If the phone needs that memory for other apps, it will free up memory as needed. But until then, you'll see it appearing as if its running. Which is why if you attempted to kill apps, some may immediately reappear in the task manager. Android is keeping them opened for a reason.
i'm no android developer but I'm pretty sure thats the basic idea of android memory management. There are tons of information about this already if you want to go into more detail.
I posted at another site this same question and they gave me site to read about it.
http://mobworld.wordpress.com/2010/07/05/memory-management-in-android/
How to use memory efficiently
Android manages opened applications which are running in the background, so officially you shouldn’t care about that. This means that it closes the applications when the system needs more memory. However, most android users are not very satisfied with how it does its things because sometimes it leaves too many processes running which causes sluggishness’ in everyday performance. We can use advanced task killer/task manager and it does its job very well.
I only wanted to know if my phone was working correctly or not I wasn't sure if all those apps were suppose to be disabled or not but some A$$holes here have to worry about my abbreviations in my post so for all U that do take a flying F%$k for yourself..........................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,""""""""""""""""""""""""

Hi. I've been struggeling with the s2 ever since I got it, almost all apps FC, Bluetooth randomly turns off as does my phone, GPS never knows where I am, I get adds in my notification bar, my Widgets don't work, time is almost always wrong and my speed test never gets above 1mb down. These problems occur out of the box on 2 different phones and with S8.
I see people enjoying their android phones but I'm confused how. Do I need to be a pro hacker to even make this device work the way it should? What can I do to fix this? I'm so frustrated I'm ready to not have a phone just so I can destroy this on with my hands. I paid 199 for this phone, don't even feel it's with $10, maybe it is but android sure isn't.
same problems on 2 different phones? I'm betting its user error... maybe you can install s8 but not restore any old data... start fresh... have you tried that? are you using titanium backup?

I've never had any of the problems you claim, but ad spam in the notification bar sounds like a classic example of malware to me.

go get an iphone or winmo if android isn't worth your time.
If you have Ads in your notification bar, you have something installed that's causing this. This is not the fault of android or your phone. You installed something which causes ads to appear and might even be causing all your other issues. Wipe it out, DONT install anything and test it out. Make sure it works the way it should without touching it.
Dont blame the phone or the Android OS for something that you did. As for the slow download speeds, after you wipe it out, run the speakeasy speedtest through your browser not the speedtest app. That app is not 100% accurate. If the speed is still slow, call AT&T because it might be an issue with the network in your area.

ROFL!! Although I agree with you, the post you are referring to was unnecessary.
I actually just switched from iOS to android myself, and considering I used to develop on iOS it was a pretty intense switch... I struggled mainly with the battery life of my phone. Notifications also caused a bit of a headache due to just how different they are.
Moral of the story, I stuck with it and actually like android more now. Given it's not as idiot proof as iOS was, but the things you can do in android (in terms of being able to do anything you want with your data and not having itunes) make it worth it.
Try flashing and rooting your phone, then remove all the apps you don't use. That fixed most of my battery problems for me, and the unnamed rom fixed the rest.

DK - Standard troubleshooting steps... Use the phone STOCK without ROOT and without any new apps for a few hours (at the very least)...
IF the phone still gives you these errors STOCK you can complain to AT&T about your issues because it is clearly the phone (HARDWARE) as ROOT cause of these issue.
HOWEVER...
If you're experiencing these issues either:
After restoring from previous backup
ROOTing the phone
Downloading apps from outside of Android Market
Then this is clearly a software issue.
I've been using my SGS2 for over 30 days STOCK non rooting and I've run into ZERO issues.
Please report BACK after you take the SGS2 to STOCK with no 3rd party apps installed...

Factory reset and go back to stock, if you are still having issues then return it for a new device. I have not had a single force close, wifi issue, bluetooth droppage, nor widge malfuntion. If you are installing other roms it sounds like you are not following instructions. you could be also installing applications/widgets that have not been updated in awhile to support SGSII? Feel sorry for you having so many issues, but take it back for another and complain. Maybe they will upgrade you to a skyrocket or something else if that will make you happy?
No complaints on my SGS II other than it can't cook me dinner or replace my nagging spouse.
Why not list the apps you installed, or as other suggested bring it back to bone stock and do a factory reset.
Quick heads up here guys.. Everyone needs to straighten up and fly right.
OP - this post comes off trolling, but I believe you may have a problem, so I am leaving it for now. But you won't get much help without really explaining your problems...

Didn't Divine_Madcat just tell everyone this morning to NOT REPLY to him if you think he's trolling? Geez...
Allow me to explain things as straight forward as possible. Please note I am not going to attack nor will I insult you.. I am spelling out facts.
Android Market does not allow malware.. There are 3 types of applications. 1) Free Application offered for no cost, 2) Ad-enabled application free to the user but you have to deal with ads gets money to the developer, 3) Paid for application. You pay for it
Now with that said.. Lets look at what your installing, If you can list out all the applications on your phone this is done by
Go to Market
Click Menu
Click My Apps
Type in all the application names there in here.
That will better help us diagnose your problem. Without that we really can not help you as a novice user you may mistake "out of the box" with nothing done when you have downloaded 10 applications. That is not for me to say but for you to show us.
Next when your asking for help please make sure to be terse and to the point with your problems, adding in extra frustration for it only makes you seem "troll" like. I could see how the other user seen you as if you where promoting IPhone and bashing Android.. Make sure to keep your personal impressions to a minimum and that will help you out here.
And remember, 99% of all problems you will incur as a user with force close are usually the users fault. Now if your a developer.. Well yea.. You will be crashing a phone alot.
So get us that list and lets see if we can't make your phone experience as good as ours is..

I guess it'll be blocked from accessing any network. That's all. The data on your phone will still be there unfortunately. Use this app called Cerberus with your next phone to prevent such situations. I've been using it since a year and it's brilliant. Allows you to locate your phone and a whole lot more including remotely wiping the phone and SD card and turning on data and WiFi. The lifetime license for 5 devices is a paltry amount too. I'm not advertising the app, it's just something that everybody would do well to have.
In any case, if you had a security lock on your phone then it won't be a problem. The thief or whoever he sells it to will probably just factory reset it. SD card data is another thing though, as it can be removed and opened with a card reader. If your pics were in the internal memory and you had a security lock then it shouldn't be a problem. Messages are stored in the /data partition anyway.
The Desire HD, which I own too, is a brilliant phone. But obviously not as good as S2, being of an older generation. The build quality beats any Samsung phone though. Mine has fallen down hundreds on times and taken many beatings, but other than a scratch here and there it's perfectly fine.

Did you mistake XDA for your blog?
If you hadn't have blocked it you could have downloaded plan b on it from the play store on your home computer.
Now they can do whatever they like on it except for text people, call people or use 3g etc.
Did you have a screen lock? if so then you may be alright for not having your pics nosed at/downloaded/passed on. If not then your out of luck.

First of all his post is relevant to XDA, since he had a S2 and is simply asking questions about the phone. Yes, he should have posted it on the Q and A part of the forum, but it is still relevant.

Let me start this by saying I LOVE the Nexus 10. It's the most comfortable tablet I've used and the screen is just phenomenal, aside from that, the random reboots are really dragging down the experience. I'm sure there still have to be people having these issues, and what are you doing to combat/keep the tablet from rebooting? I've factory reset my device probably 5 times since my purchase in January, and have installed a few ROMs to try and stop them to no avail. I'm currently running CM10.1 with KTManta and are still having crashes daily, if not every 3-4 hours of heavy use. Location services are disabled, and Chrome is nowhere to be found. How many here are still having these issues? I'm just trying to grab a realistic number here for the community. Would those who are having freezes and reboots like to contribute to a global list where we could possibly list all of the applications that we use to see if there is a common ground amongst us? I just hate that this awesome tablet is being placed on the back burner for now with what would appear like no indication of upcoming fixes. I'm sure IO will bring us a more stable version of Android (4.2.2 is pretty awful) but that's still quite a bit away.

I may have had a comepletely different problem, but a RMA made my N10 go from bad to good experience
Been running 4.2.2 official AOKP with default kernel for the last couple weeks and haven't had 1 freeze/reboot. Battery great also with around 7-8 hours of screen time.
4.2.2 was a huge improvement

I am currently on a CM10 base and KTManta kernel and I have no reboots or other problems at all. I had been on AOKP PUB for quite a while before this and it was fine too, and before that I was on a really old build of CM10 (4.2.1) for a long time with only a couple issues due to memory leaks that caused a reboot once every few days.

Your second device isn't rebooting?
Edit: To OP. I gave up combatting it. Nothing seems to work. It could be an app but when it reboots sometimes every few days that would be hard to troubleshoot. I can swap an app list with you if you want although it may be more beneficial to see those the apps of those with no issues so you could have a starting point?

I own this device for ~4 weeks now and I haven't had a single reboot, freeze or anything.
Of course I understand that not everybody is this lucky, so I feel sad for you guys but it seems to be more hardware reliant than anything with newer devices not experiencing many problems.
I experienced several reboots a day when I first received my Nexus 10. It was frustrating to use at best. Since the 4.2.2 (I'm running stock with root) upgrade and switching to Chrome beta I no longer have any reboot problems with the same device. I am now able to turn on location awareness without lockups or reboots as well. It's a complete 180.
My wife just bought her own Nexus 10 and hers has never locked up or rebooted spontaneously. Hers is stock, unrooted, and she uses non-beta Chrome.

It is not.
I mentioned it in another thread, but I prefer to charge a units battery 100% full, then run the unit unitl it turns its self off from dead battery. The first two "cycles" on my RMA unit I did that, no problems during either cycle, each cycle was three days long. So then I started to charge it when the battery said 1%, and now I'm up to 302 hours of uptime. There have been no shell reboots during this 302 hours, as I've always been sure to leave an app in "recently used" and its always still there. I've also been using things that previously I would not have, such as Maps, apps that run message in status bar such as "Date In Status Bar HD" etc etc.
But full tech-slanted disclaimer because I know the history of this problem:
-My problem on my original unit 99.9% of the time manifested its self as "sleep of death", a bit different than "the masses"
-On my RMA unit, I've never opened Chrome. Not because I am wanting to use it but avoiding it, rather I only ever want to use one browser per device, and since I need to use Boat for Flash, I run Boat instead
-Similarly, I have not done anything "trying to force a crash" on the unit. For example, I've not run that crash app that dude just posted to the Google thread
-Again related to my personality/thought process: My goal has been "just use the tablet as I normally would" so that DOES include things like surfing the web on Boat for 3 hours at a time, running some lame match-3 games, etc etc. I am NOT sitting in a class all day with the unit open for 8 hour stints, nor am I watching YouTube for hours at a time, nor am I taking 1 hour video recordings on the device. So moderate use, but not "stress testing" use.
Still, the summary of my experience says it all (for me) - Could not consider the original unit dependable in anyway, it almost always was "off" if it was sitting on my desk, whereas now the new unit has not had a single event and I'm about one month into it, every day use... Original unit I noticed the problem within the first 3 days of ownership, but I thought there was a setting I had wrong, then I thought it was a problem that 4.2.2 would fix - both those assessments of my original device were wrong.
One more data point on this - My new unit is the D serial number, my original was the C - but another user here described the EXACT same crap I was dealing with, and his was a D - so I don't think there is an exact match for the possible theory of serial numbers (again in the context of sleep-of-death-manifestation.)
:good:
~bm
I've not had one single reboot or freeze with this tablet, I'm on the stock 4.2.2. I have had some apps crash which brings me to my next point... How do your log cats look? They are usually a good starting point when trying to figure out the cause of a crash.
And if you are getting multiple reboots across a spread of roms than it's most likely an app. You need to take the time and figure out which app is causing it. It will be worth it in the long run!

I mentioned it in another thread, but I prefer to charge a units battery 100% full, then run the unit unitl it turns its self off from dead battery.

You do that every time? That's not good and definitely not needed with lithium ion batteries.

I've not had one single reboot or freeze with this tablet, I'm on the stock 4.2.2. I have had some apps crash which brings me to my next point... How do your log cats look? They are usually a good starting point when trying to figure out the cause of a crash.
And if you are getting multiple reboots across a spread of roms than it's most likely an app....

I think that is the point for the OP but nobody is doing it. Can you guys with no reboots list the apps on your device? That would give the people with reboots a starting point.
I appreciate the input to the thread but (I'll probably get flamed for this) many of the anecdotal responses are not of much value IMHO. You can't really start any troubleshooting with and not trying to single anyone out, 4.2.2 fixed it, my RMA'd device fixed it, beta-chrome works for me, non-beta for the wife, it's hardware, newer ones are better, turn off location services, etc. I have an RMA'd device so it is newer than the first batch. To that point, there is a guy in the thread bigmatty linked where the device is 8 days old. Is it an app? I hope so but with the infrequency of the reboots or seemingly randomness of it it is hard to troubleshoot. AOKP ran for 2 days 9 hours for me then crashed, then crashed again in 5 hours, and now up for 2 days again so far. The thing is they were all when idle so it is really hard to say what happened. One of my logs suggests gtalk loosing connection and rebooting the tablet. The other says nothing "illegal" or anything like that in the logs. Just the activity manager freaks out like every other log and then watchdog kills everything.
So, you guys with perfect N10s why don't you give us an app list so us poor bastards with reboots have a starting point....please

Look, that's not how troubleshooting works. The easiest and most efficient way is to reset your roms, add one or two apps a day, and keep adding apps till you find the problem. Patience is the key. But once you find the problem you'll be very pleased. Me or anyone else listing apps on our devices will not be meaningful to the problem because you're looking for apps that work, you're looking for ones that don't.
Your starting point is a ROM with no apps.

Well, I've personally done a lot of research into this topic, and no one will ever convince me any other method is as good for the batteries as it is. I've seen the battery discussions on both sides drag on for miles, so not worth discussing really. Just IMHO - ALL batteries can still suffer from memory effect. (Again, seen both sides of that discussion.)
I agree w/ the "top-level-general uncertainty" about these devices and thus the inherent frustrating complexities that rxnelson is talking about. My general opinion on the situation, is - if nothing else, there are some truly defective units in the field now, which further complicates the issue/troubleshooting.

Yea...well that is probably not going to happen for most people. Even at 10 apps 2 days per app you are looking at almost a month of troubleshooting. Most people aren't going to do that. There is also nothing to say that your bad app didn't cause an issue in 2 days but 4 instead you will be thinking the wrong app caused the issue. Anyway it was what the OP asked for so also trying to stay on topic.

Yeah I hear you man. When I was in the cell phone business as much as I love android I hated selling android phones because people go app crazy and install whatever they can find. Then they come back the next day because their phone isn't working properly. Lol.
But honestly, how many different apps do you use on a typical day? And let's put games and other non productive apps aside. So for troubleshooting purposes start with the apps you really, truly, honestly NEED and see if you still get issues.
This really becomes a circular discussion. Its the same as the original links I was referencing. Mods are just humoring us by not merging...

I hear you as well. To be honest I'm just kind of done with troubleshooting. I've had a rebooting device since November. I'm just looking for a base to start with I guess. Kind of like at work. We have 10-15 core apps we install and test on a PC. When they are tested we make an image and blast that to the other devices. If 19 of 20 of the PCs work then we re-image the one. If that doesn't work it almost isn't worth the trouble shooting as we have 20 more that need imaged. Most of the time they chalk it up to hardware send it to the PC techs and move on. If I get bored I'll reflash....and yes honestly I don't use that many apps but it is still kind of a kick in the balls that you have to baby the device. I still think there is something generally wrong with the I/O of the two devices I've had. If I do a restore all apps and I mess with the tablet while it is downloading and installing all those apps they were both almost guaranteed to reboot.

:cyclops: I've read it all and done my own tests that span years... Even talked with former battery engineers about the topics and theories. My method always leaves my devices "more charged longer". Like I said, seen this battery topic drag on endlessly...

The odds seem so impossible that you personally would have got two defective devices, but clearly you have the tech chops to give a good assessment to the situation - I would love to see your experience with a third device... Just because each different physical device you test would keep exponentially increasing the odds.
A couple of the others who seem real in tune to this issue, I think have a hard or impossible return/RMA path, so I feel like it's an option not being that exhausted yet.
Well, I don't know that I am off much more help on this topic in general. I watched it so intensely for a couple months so its still got my interest. At the very least, guessing all the talks cab start again after klp is released!

I'll do this for you later today. Like I was saying, I think you are Not crazy :highfive:
I need an extra push, I'm hoping to find it here.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S2. There are two things I will have to live without, can anyone tell me if I should be worried?
1. The lack of a menu and search button.
2. Not having the ability to take out the battery.
On another note, I was wondering if someone could confirm if it's possible to remove the HTC Sense? The first thing I plan on doing is rooting it and removing basically any software HTC and AT&T add. One other question.. does anyone know if the IR can be setup to use custom commands, or if that's something we have to wait for developers?
I don't have much to add on here except the search button is so two years ago. No need to have that button there with the advent of long pressing and double tapping.

Most people that cry about batteries are usually closet Samsung fanboys. The ability to "take out the battery" is a bit overrated. Sorry but I don't have any need to add a brick to the back of my phone just so I can show off some "amazing battery stats"

Actually it's nice to have a search button where if I'm in the app drawer I can tap that and search for an app. Or if I'm on the home screen it opens google now. Or on a browser, it's a quick search button. You get the idea. What's the alternative now? How do you open Google Now or search for apps quickly?

I hate the way the S4 looks, and the S3. The huge rounded corners are a big turn off. I would end up getting that if I can't put up with the limitations the one has to offer.

Actually, I don't care about that.. I can optimize android to get what I need out of it. But I do like the ability to replace it if it dies or degrades in performance in a year from now, or say.. my phone is frozen, taking out the battery is often the fastest way to turn the damn thing off. Most of my stuff is in the cloud now, so I don't see me needing to replace my SD card. But it has occationally come in handy when I want to just pop it into my laptop to transfer some large files. I'm going to miss that.
I'm usually a Samsung guy but the one is amazing. We complain about the battery being no good over time and needing the ability to swap out. However, we get the next best thing after a year or so of use then sell the current device. The one is good. I haven't even rooted yet. I can wait until we get a stock RUU.

If I have any issues with the battery I am calling Squaretrade and getting a replacement. That's the great thing about having insurance even though I am not even sure If I will be using this device for the full 2 years. Also, if you hold the power button down for 10 seconds its just like pulling the battery, but much faster.
I came from having a Galaxy SIII on Verizon, switched to ATT with a Galaxy SII Skyrocket and am now a happy camper with my One. The biggest hurdle was getting over not having the same capacitive buttons and how much faster the One is.
By no means am I a heavy user but I am sitting here with 60% battery going on just over 8 hours.
Lol I love being to put a beastly 7000 mah battery in my phone to get 3 days of battery. But if I can't, it isn't that big of a deal. Btw I'm not a Samsung fan boy, I'm a fan of whatever is the best.

On a custom rom you can map the other buttons to do a menu and maybe even a search (I'm not sure)
Holding power+vol up and down simulates pulling the battery
Right now there is not a way to remove sense, you can use 3rd party launchers for now. They are working on pure android ROMs and development will be GREAT on this device. I have owned a S2 and played with the One and the One is SWEET. (I'm still waiting for my black to arrive). I have a HTC One XL and think it is MUCH better than my S2. Just get it, You will love it. Or wait for development to grow a little to give you all those features
i recently sold my iphone and bought a galaxy s4 because i had heard that its a lot faster than iphone but mine takes a long time to load an application an action to scroll around the device, basically it is generally really slow and sometimes i have to press again on the screen to do something. i have turned off animation, i dont have a live wallpaper and generally havent loaded so many apps to make it slow. what can i do? please help, im starting to regret buying it.

Hi,
Are you still on stock ROM?
Have you rooted?
How much space do you have left on your internal storage?
Have you updated it?

Hi,
Look HERE
I suggest you go back to stock and see if that improves the speed of your phone.
Before that, backup all your stuff, because you should also factory reset.

you mean unroot right?
Don't unroot. Go into the android development and hacking forums and find a script to make your phone faster, and flash it in CWM recovery. If you can't do that, overclock your phone using the No Frills CPU Control app off the Play Store. Make sure both sliders are at the end and that your governer is Performance. Also, try out Auto Memory Optimizer, that's a good app for retaining your speed. And of course, always close apps when you aren't using them.

That's not how my friends S4 works, it is extremely responsive and fluid. Apps work without hiccups and even multi tasking is awesome. The first thing that came to my mind when you posted your phone's symptoms were, did you purchase it brand new from a shop? Is it on stock FM? Did you actually check it at the store before your purchased it?
Yours could be a FW or a HW problem. Is it possible to take the phone back to the store and have them fix/replace it before attempting software fixes?
