[Q] Email - words split to next line - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I've searched to no avail.... I'm running stock and using the included email app. Some (not all) email comes through with words split between lines like this:
I have gone to see my fri
end and when I arrived sh
wasn't there so I then tri
ed to.... blah blah
It doesn't happen with all email. I found a setting in the browser to fix word wrap but can find nothing to fix email.
Thanks for any assistance. B

out of curiosity, have you noticed this happening with one or two people in particular? I'm thinking that it might be the way they send the email, not the way your phone displays it.
reason is - I notice that same problem once in a while on my corporate email setup on outlook. Turned out it was a problem on the sender's end. not sure the details, though.

Good point. I just got the phone and I haven't read many emails yet but will keep that in mind. One in particular that I remember was from an iPad owner and another was from a library. I didn't that problem with my last phone (WinMo)
I have one email from a public library to my gmail account. If I look at it with the GMail app on the GS2, it is fine but if I look at it on the GS2 email app, it has the split word problem.

i'm not really sure what would cause that. Have you tried to clear the cache on the gs2 email app?

I've gotten only about 12 emails since firing up the phone. I don't know how to clear the cache.

settings > applications > manage applications > "all" tab (up top) > find the email app that you're using. You'll see the button in there.

ok - thanks for directions. I cleared my cache and we'll see what happens

this is happening to me as well... stock email app hooked up to exchange. emails look fine in outlook as well as on the exchange server, but they appear fragmented (both portrait and landscape) in the email app... clearing cache does not do anything. this is all emails from all senders.

anybody know anything about this?

I know on my old Captivate, if you select anything other than the default font in email client, you will get this problem. But the new email client on GS2 doesn't have any way to select a different font.
Also, from the screen shots above, try tap the button "load more details" and see if it changes.

"load more details" just loads the entire email thread, instead of just the portion in view.

Nope. It tries to load the email as HTML mail if your current exchange server reports as Exchange 2003. This typically works well for Hotmail.

I don't see "load more details" anywhere. Perhaps this is only for exchange email?

It is only for exhang 2003 emails.

you're right... and this does fix it, but now i'm curious on how to "force" this action from the get go...

in your exchange server settings, you can select the settings for how much of each email you sync, how far back your calenda sycsr, tasks (for 2k8 and above), etc...
under emails, select the size to retrive emails to ALL, that should download all of the email, and not show you the prompt to "load more details"
---------- Post added at 10:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:02 PM ----------
fwiw, when you only download part of an email, its downloaded in "plain text" mode.. when you download all of an email, either by default, or by clicking the "load more details" link. you download the html version of the email if your server supports html mail.

Not necessary always the case. With Exchange 2003 protocol, HTML email is not supported. So the server will only push down plain text portion of the email. Some mail servers like Hotmail are known to push as Exchange 2003 protocol only but can actually send out HTML email as well if you ask. So the 'Load more detail' button will ignore the protocol restriction and ask server for full HTML email anyway.

Sync With Google

Google Sync is a free service that allows you to sync your contacts, email and calendar with your gmail account.
It is a two-way sync, meaning that if you add an appointment or contact to your phone, it will upload to Google's cloud and update your gmail information as well.
I use Google Sync to keep my contacts in the cloud, vs using myPhone since I have multiple phones but only one Windows Live account. If you have ever synced two phones to myPhone under one account, you'll see right away why this is a bad thing.
One of my favorite benefits from using Google Sync is the fact that it not only stores my phone contacts, it also stores their facebook links and contact pictures as well. This means that I can freely flash another ROM without worrying about backing up all of my contacts to SIM or myPhone and then manually updating all of the information for them.
The best part of Google Sync has to be the push email service. As emails arrive (assuming you have set the account up correctly), they will be pushed to your phone via ActiveSync. You don't have to be at your computer for this, it's done over the air.
The only think Google Sync can't do is sync Tasks. If you choose Tasks during the setup, you will receive a cryptic error.
Now that I've told you about the benefits of Google Sync, let's go over how to use it. This assumes you have an existing gmail account. I don't know how to sync with Google without a gmail account, sorry.
I always add my hotmail account first. For some strange reason you can never go back and edit the settings for the first mail account you setup on Windows Mobile, so I use my hotmail account for this.
Steps:
Select your Mail tab and hit the Menu button
Choose "Add Account"
Under "Choose a Mail Provider", select "Outlook" (Don't select Gmail!)
Put your entire gmail address ([email protected]) in the "Email address" box, followed by your password.
Select "Next"
Under "User name" put your email address ([email protected]) again.
The Password field should be filled in, if not just put it in again.
Scroll down.
Leave "Domain" blank.
Scroll down.
Leave "Save password" checked.
Under "Server address" put m.google.com
Leave "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" checked.
Select "Next"
If all options are selected, deselect Tasks (Very Important!)
If not, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar
Hit Advanced Settings
Peak time and Non-peak time (I have "As items arrive" on both here) sets how often your emails are pushed to your phone.
I have nationwide coverage, so I also select "Sync data when roaming".
Hit "Done"
Hit "Done" again.
The phone will now connect to the Google Sync server and begin updating your contacts, calendar appointments and email. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of contacts and such. If you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, they should now appear on your phone in short order. You may choose "Send/Receive" from the mail Menu if you think it is taking too long.
You will now be able to receive your email sent to your gmail account as soon as it arrives. I have also forwarded my email from my other accounts to my gmail account, but this may be too much for you.
I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have the "Smart Phone" plan (so-called "Unlimited Data Plan"), as it will eat up your bandwith quickly. It may also have a detrimental effect on your battery, due to the fact that it requires a constant data and Active Sync connection to work properly.
If you are concerned about your battery, you can try changing the Peak and Non-peak options under "Advanced" to longer intervals. If it makes a big difference in the life of your battery, I would love to hear about it here!
You can view the original Google Sync video and tutorial links here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
Hopefully this will be of use to someone out there! Please let me know if you use Google Sync or if you have trouble following my directions.
---Issue With Labels/Folders---
If you have set gmail to tag messages with labels as they come in, you may not be able to read the messages on your phone. XDA-DEV user pantyshot has managed a workaround and posted it here. Be sure to thank pantyshot for the fix if you find it handy!
Also, newer versions of Outlook Mobile (any available as a cab install so that people don't have to use a custom rom?) support sorting messages by subject. Pretty darn close to the threaded messages in the orgasmic Android Gmail app.
I've been doing this since I got the phone, but it is nice to see someone write up the details.
Nice thx man. I didnt even know this was possible on WM coming from a Nexus. I synced my phonebook with MS outlook but nice to know this is possible.
This should be a sticky!!!
Thanks... nice sticky note.
On Friday, I bought an HD2 to replace my Nexus One (which I gave to my daughter). The N1 & Android are just fine but I wanted to play with the HD2 and WinMo. Not too worried about the lack of support for WinMo 7 as I am certain that we will find versions we can use thanks to XDA.
Ok, back on-topic... I was using Google Sync to get my messages from Gmail to my Nexus One. I now know how to do this with WinMo 6.5. I will address this when I get back home as I am on a business trip in Amman, Jordan and I don't want to rake-up astronomical data roaming charges while over here.
this is helpful for newbies/ beginners..
Anyway I had done set up the gmail as "PRIMARY" account only when i got HD2. why i need hotmail set up as primary account then add gmail? I just curious..
I've been using this method as well, but has anyone noticed that you cannot sync your labels from gmail? Is it just me or Outlook just syncs the inbox aside from contacts and calendar?
The only glitch I have seen with using google sync is that when you import your contacts from google, they get sorted as Last Name, First Name. (Doe, John.)I have always liked seeing my contact list as first name last name. (John Doe.) If you manually try to switch this in your contact list, it gets over written once google syncs again. Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
This method is GREAT. Big thanks to OP

I'm not sure why, but whenever you add a new email account to Windows Mobile and attempt to go back and edit it, the first account you added will always be grayed out. This means you can't modify, or even delete the first account.
Since you may decide you want to change how often you check your gmail, I thought you might want to add a hotmail account (Windows Live) first, since those settings are automatic and can't be changed anyway.
I've always had to do a hardreset in the past to get rid of bad gmail settings, so I learned to always put hotmail first.
Hope that helps

I know, this is annoying. I have added two new contacts and both of them were sorted like this.
You can try deleting the "Last Name" field in your phone contacts, then add the last name beside the first name, but I haven't actually tried that.
If it works, please get back to us

When I used the official Gmail App, it represented labels as folders. Because Google doesn't actually have different folders (just different flags for each message), I don't know of any way to split the messages by folder.
As a matter of fact, I don't think you can do this with regular folders via Outlook, due to the way the built-in email client works.
If anyone knows a fix to this please post; we would all like to separate our messages by folders if possible!

You can try this app I have called Contact Changer. Just install to phone, hit the change button and soft reset. After that they should display correctly, and it's actually WinMo that displays contacts like that b/c I have mine sync'd through Microsoft Myphone (b/c gmail messes up the contact pics) and they display the same way.
Now once you run the app, if you add a contact or delete a contact it will revert to last name first. Just run the Contact Changer and reboot again and you will be golden.

Funny you mention that.
I actually used the built-in option to link my favorite contacts to their respective facebook account in my friends list. This changed the contact picture from the camera image I had to their facebook avatar. When next I flashed my phone, Google loaded the contacts back with the facebook linke and facebook avatar, which was very surprising to me.
Does myPhone do the same thing if you use them to keep track of your contacts?

Not sure what you posted this link in reference to. Unless you are confusing Google Sync with ActiveSync...
ActiveSync is the method of connecting your phone directly to your PC, for file transfers, updating your ROM image and standard backups. It is also the name of the protocol that the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to sync data between the Server and ActiveSync-enabled devices.
Google Sync is a free Microsoft Exchange Server that allows "push" email via your phone's data connection. You don't have to be near a PC to sync your calendar, contacts or gmail.
I think the threaded e-mail conversations are only available in the WM 6.5.x versions of WinMo. I am also unable to sync my other folders (Sent, Saved) from Gmail. I have them checked off as well in the Manage Folders option, but nothing appears in these folders after syncing. I think the only possible folder to sync is Inbox.

Are you sure they are actually folders? I thought gmail only has labels that appear as folders in the native clients.
Also, this is the same as most Outlook syncs; it will only give you the unread messages. There may be a setting in gmail that will allow you to retrieve old messages, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that on a mobile phone.
If you want to just get your emails, you can use the "Gmail" option when setting up your new email account on the HD2. This won't "push" like the "Outlook" option will, but you can still set it to manually check as often as every 5 minutes if you can spare the battery life.
Of course, you would be much better off getting the official gmail client for that, since that will also support your lables-as-folders option.
Myself, I prefer to use Google Sync and let that push emails to my phone as well as syncing all of my gmail and phone contacts. I don't use labels any more and don't want all the "Sent" or "Archived" messages to clutter up my phone.
Yea, you're probably right about the labeling/folder issue. I just want to see a saved e-mail to look some thing up at times, but maybe I'll just log onto gmail.com for that on my phone. Is there any Gmail client available for WinMo phones? I haven't seen any. Also, does push kill battery life? (ex. sync every 5 minutes) Or is it a more sophisticated syncing method that will only connect to data when new messages arrive?

[Q] Recomended email app

Anyone recommend a "one size fit all email app" like the iphone, for Att S2?
I'm using Exchange, yahoo, gmail. I have lots of folder in my exchange mail and the stock Mail is sux.
Moxier mail is good but only have 1 email acc. I need an app that can put all mails in one place and showing folders instead of coupel apps for emails.
Thanks
I use Gmail for all of my accounts. I set Gmail up to retrieve (pop) mail from my Yahoo account and my other email address forwards to Gmail. I have labels set up, which allows me to organize it. I've been doing this for a while and it works really well.
What about Exchange, all folder will show or i have to go settings and choose specific folder to view? it's a pain in the bu.. . I really like the way iphone's emails handle.

I've never used Exchange, but if you were able to successfully configure it for pop retrieval, it'd work just as your other email addresses, in terms of how you view them (outlined below). Otherwise, perhaps forwarding is an option. For the email address I have forwarding, I set up filters (scans incoming emails for defined rules) to apply labels (e.g., when the sender or recipient is ______, apply this label). It's something you'd have to toy around with, but I've gotten mine set up pretty well.
All emails would show in your Gmail account inbox (with labels on each one, if you've done this) and you have the ability to specifically select a label to only see mail with that label. This is something you can do online or on your device via the Gmail app (viewing individual labels). I've tried just about every email client and I've found that this method is what works best for me.
Good luck.

The stock email client is very nice and seems to work very well with Exchange. From what I've seen so far:
1) Tasks will sync
2) Folders are supported, much nicer and easier than with the Captivate
3) Flags are supported
4) Various display options such as first line preview, threaded emails, etc
5) Out of Office settings can be made from phone.
6) You can search emails on the server, not just those on your phone
7) In landscape it'll do a preview pane on the right-hand side. Not bad.
Try it, you've got nothing to lose. Seems pretty nice so far. The only thing I am missing is the ability to "check" multiple emails and take an action on a group of them (e.g., delete them all). You need to do it one-by-one. But so far it works well.
Anybody know if the stock email client can be set up for "push only" so it doesn't poll every x minutes for new mail?
Another vote for enhanced email. You can bypass exchange security rules

Enhanced Email is what youre looking for. I'm a huge Exchange user and this program easily integrates and works just like it does on iphone. You can choose which folders to keep in sync and it will notify you whenever a new message arrives in sub-folders.
The only problem I have with the stock email app is that you can't "Select All" and delete. That capability, and the ability to forward emails by clicking on several contacts and adding them , as the stock program does, are two features I really like; however, I can't find an email program that has both capabilities.

[Q] Email - POP3 Server Issue (Deleting from Server)

Hi. Is there a known glitch with the Android Email App where it takes emails off the server when in POP3 configuration, even when you have the "Don't Delete From Server" option on "Never"? I'm experiencing this problem. Is there a fix?
Thanks,
-Adam
IIRC "Don't delete from server" is a traditional client config setting that controls whether or not the email is deleted at the time it is polled by the POP client. It does not necessarily control whether or not the client later reaches out and tells the server to delete an arbitary message, and I think this ambiguity is the issue.
My guess is Android is deleting the message from the server when it's deleted from the phone. See the last few posts here.
The workaround I see folks using is to set the "last N days" setting low and letting them fall off the phone's view rather than deleting them.
I haven't used POPn in a while so input welcomed from more knowledgeable folks.

I just read through the link. I took the advice of setting up the email client on my computer to leave mail on the server, but it still gets removed when I receive it on my phone.. maybe it's time to call T-Mobile.
But the desktop client leaves it on the server? If so, sounds like an Android problem and I figure TMO will be useless. Hopefully someone else jumps in to clue us in. I don't have a pop+webmail account handy to use for testing (and I'm running CM7).
Are you running the stock T-mobile ROM that came with the phone? Would it be acceptable to try some other (free) POP3 client from the android market?

When I receive the email on my desktop, I can't get it on my phone.. even though I have it set to keep the messages on the server. This is weird!
I know that POP3 is kind of outdated and IMAP is the new popular standard. I'd switch it over to IMAP, but I don't like how when I delete messages from the Inbox, they reappear the next time I check my email.

Actually, I think the weirdness is on the server, since the desktop client won't leave them there either. If you share who the mail provider is someone might chime in with info or a fix.
Dunno any 3rd party pop3 apps, as I don't use them.

Yahoo imap & pop: can't connect to server

Hi all. Having been with yahoo for many many (often tiring) years, sadly this isn't a new thing, it's something that comes and goes seemingly based on the whims of yahoo deciding to change their settings, potentially to try to herd users onto their (awful) mail app. Anyway, problem:
All of a sudden, my account (yahoo plus, imap) and my mothers (yahoo basic, pop) have stopped receiving emails on our 2 android phones (samsung S3 with latest ICS, & HTC wildfire with whatever was before ICS, respectively). I've read a number of forums with various suggestions, including:
- clear the app cache
- change to a different server: most suggest imap.mail.yahoo.com but others suggest imap.n.mail.yahoo.com, imap.android.mail.yahoo.com, one suggests using IMAP4 (don't know how to select this)
- delete account & reinstall
None of these work. Peversely, I AM getting emails through on imap.mail.yahoo.com, but very intermittently. I'll notice that, e.g. overnight, I'll have gotten most of yesterday's, but if i click for a manual refresh it'll fail. Likewise if I set myself up for imap.mail.yahoo.com, it'll check the settings & be ok, but then give a connection error.
My mum's phone is a slightly different problem: she can log in fine through the internet, but her username/password combo fails for pop access through the stock email app. She's a .co.uk address, & i'm wondering if this is the reason for the problem. I suspect it's just that yahoo is having a problem.
Any thoughts appreciated for both of these - potentially connected - problems.
Cheers
Dez

Any ideas? Running Clean ROM right now, but it was happening on Novella Dos as well...one of the reasons I switched over to CR...it is quite maddening.
Thanks in advance!

Go into your email, go to settings, and Uncheck "Email Notifications" I am running AOSP Email, but it should be similar.

thats the problem. POP3 will show a notification on any unread email. also, if you r deleting the email from the phone, you may not be deleting it from the server. POP3 gives you the option to change this in the incoming server settings. when inside the incoming server settings, you will see at the bottom that there is an option that says what the phone should do when you delete an email from the phone. if you delete it from the phone only, the email will still exist on the server. this will cause multiple notifications of the same email, even if it is marked as read.
a couple solutions:
1: if you ARE NOT deleting the emails and getting duplicate notifications, switch the account to an IMAP config. (every email host i have had gives you both options: IMAP or POP3)
2: if you ARE deleting the emails and the Incoming server setting is set to "Delete email from server: Never", you will need to change that to "When i delete from inbox". otherwise, you will have to deal with duplicate notifications. NOTE: IF YOU DELETE THE EMAIL OFF OF THE SERVER, ANY OTHER PLACE THE EMAIL IS STORED (I.E.: HOME COMPUTER, TABLET, ETC.) WILL ALSO DELETE OFF OF THOSE DEVICES.
you should also know that when deleting an email with an IMAP config will automatically delete it off of the server. IMAP will also show when you have viewed or replied to an email across all devices that are signed into the same email address as IMAP.

Thanks for the detailed response...I don't know what to say really; the problem has only happened recently, say last few weeks. I finally got fed up with it and sought a resolution.
I switch roms frequently, so I have to set up accounts frequently enough to know what is checked and my settings are default, always the same. So why the change? I guarantee I could power up my Rezound and the settings would be the same...and I never had this problem before.
Doesn't matter if the emails are read or not. Right now I have notifications off and the problem still is occurring. If I delete an email then I'm still notified for the next newest.
And last but not least, the problem has followed me across different roms. Thought it was specific to one as I had used that rom for several weeks. So maybe it is something server side. Can't configure Knology(now WOW) for IMAP, I tried. Besides, I refuse to check 'delete from server' because there are emails I need to keep that need attention from my home PC. I can change sync settings to longer periods or off, but that is not really feasible either.
So bottom line is, I just don't get it.
**Update** Not sure exactly what fixed it as I did multiple things in a short period, but the problem no longer exists. Unticked, rebooted, reticked notifications and all is good. Also loaded a different rom from bachup, but that was before I did above steps. Who knows??:fingers-crossed:
