Im in line for an upgrade in November and want opinions from current owners...is this phone the beast its made out to be or should i wait for galaxy nexus? Also, benchmarks show my cappy outperform s2 gpu. Are games smooth? Is the screen just larger cappy or is it sharper? Basically Im asking if any of you feel as if you should have waited for nexus or are satisfied with s2

I'm my experience so far, every game I've tried runs smooth as butter.
The screen looks downright beautiful and the colors really "pop"
Also, according to many tech sites I frequent, the SGII is on par with (and in some cases better) than the Galaxy Nexus.
It's simply awesome. Also, I've read that the nexus prime doesn't have Gorilla glass and SGS2 have it. Though ICS does look amazing, and when it's available for us officially or unofficially from our beloved devs, SGS2 will be an awesomess phone.

Get ready for a lot of satisfied people here.
I love this phone after a year with my captivate. I wouldn't say the screen is noticibly cripser, but its amazing.
I was disappointed with the Nexus. Check this forum, there are several posts about the SGS II vs Nexus discussion. The screen has a higher resolution, but its pentile, so its not a true comaprison.
The biggest feature about the Nexus will be faster updates for new android (vanilla) versions, but that's really the only difference to consider. Other than that the SII is comporable or better in almost every regard.

Am I the only that was disappointed in the 5mp main camera and the front facing camera wasn't close to the 2mp in our beloved handset... That alone made me take the Nexus Prime off my hit list...
I was truly expecting a Galaxy S3 with ICS... A bit of a let down IMHO...
I am happy I didn't wait for the Galaxy Nexus. My Captivate was a great phone but the GSII is better in every way and the Nexus isn't a big enough improvement to warrant the supposedly higher price I've heard will come with the Nexus. But it all comes down to preference so if you feel the Nexus specs are worth waiting for then by all means wait for it but the GSII is definitely the beast it's made out to be.
I'm deciding btw SII and the Galaxy Note if it does come out for att. The bigger screen and stylus sound cool to play with.

I came from the Cappy also (still have it as a backup and.my wife's also). The SGS2 is a WHOLE LOT SMOOTHER and refined feeling. I never felt I bad lag in my captivate but after using the SGS2 my cappy feels slow. As much as I don't believe in or care for quadrant scores I think the LOWEST I got on stock was in the 3500 range and at least somewhere into the 4000+'s
Yes it is the beast it is made out to be.
Even if you set your cappy to 1.6Ghz as long as it runs smooth it does not compare to the SGS2 running at 1.2Ghz.
It is hard to describe ALL the differences between the SGS2 and cappy but it is noticeably better than the cappy. I too prefer it over the specs of the Google Nexus as for me I prefer a 8Mp camera. From what I have read the size of the device is NOT that much bigger than the SGS2 (total size) it just doesn't have the soft buttons at the bottom and uses that as part of the screen. So that part does sound good to me. The SGS2 doesn't seem to have lockups like the cappy could have on occasion, it just runs better. It is already using EXT4 standard as opposed to on the cappy having to run a lagfix that converted the cappy to EXT4.
SO basically YES IT IS A BEAST IT IS MADE.OUT TO BE...

I don't think you can go wrong with either device to be honest. They're both top notch products and I think you'll have great support either way. I was really pushing to go with the Nexus early on but with the support here on xda and a few of my friends owning the phone, I see no reason to give up my S2 right now.
I love my S2 and whether we get ICS soon or not, I'm happy with GB as it is and the various roms - UnNamed being my current fav.
The biggest plus of Ics is FULL hardware acceleration..im sure itll be up n runnin for s2 soon after source is released...ill b lookin for watsa's build!

Hi guys!
Im getting a new phone in the next couple of days and its between these two.
I just want to know which one of these would you recommend over the other and why
Thanks!
Get the Nexus unless you want:
1. the S II's 8MP cam. Although keep in mind that MP count isn't everything.
2. physical/capacitive buttons.
3. ability to expand storage with microSD card. This is a pretty huge deal to a lot of folks.
4. to keep using Gingerbread over Ice Cream Sandwich.
5. TouchWiz.
Galaxy Nexus, updates direct from google no waiting 6+ months for them.
Thats the thing, other than the screen size and os i havent seen anything that makes the galaxy nexus seem better but im not too phone savvie which is why im not sure
I would say apart from the above mentioned points in favour of the s2, the main reason why I didn't go for the nexus is the weight and size factor... if you don't intend to use your phone for more than mainly phone features then I don't think one needs a 4.65" screen... I always felt 4" was the perfect size, but due to the s2's extremely light weight it can get away with the large size... the nexus is bigger aand heavier which makes sense but still... when it comes to comfort of carrying it in a pocket, I'd rather not have a giant bulge in my pocket... but nonetheless the nexus is sexy as hell... I would love to have that HD display... but size does matter...
I think you should check them both out in the shop before buying... soon enough ICS will be on the S2 as well so... and being on xda you will be getting custom rom updates before samsungs... unless your into stock...

The only thing i like about the nexus is the screen, don't like the design and the lack of memory card slot is unforgivable.
depends on your preference.. if you want gorjess screen and ICS go for nexus..
if you want camera quality and 2011 smartphone of the year go for S2..
but i suggest you to wait for S3.. because it will be a major upgrade over S2 and it comes loaded with more features than the existing galaxy nexus..
its just samsung marketing strategies to keep their phone lineup balanced..
I would wait for the SGS3 as well!!! But would take the SGS2 if I had to choose now!
i had the chance to play with a galaxy nexus yesterday and i wasnt impressed.
it was slower than my sgs2, horrid camera, no sd, screen didnt look better at all, slower cpu and gpu.
I dont want to sound like a hater because i genuinely was considering it but, its simply not a better device.

Dude, I've had both phones and I can tell you without hesitation to get the Galaxy Nexus. It's the best mobile phone I've ever used. Period.
The HD screen is beyond gorgeous.
Nexus if you
like fast update, big screen with High resolution, android beam ??
and don't care about no sd card slot, gaming(cause it have the same GPU as nexus s! and cpu is lower than SGS2)
SGS2 if you
like sd card slot, gaming, lot of mods
and don't care about big screen but low resolution, slow update

I agree with this to a degree. The GS3 will probably have the same screen as the GN and a better processor - but you'll rely on Samsung for the latest updates.
The GN on the other hand will be the first phone to get the most up to date firmware from Google.
For me, I'm worried about extra storage, having the best camera and gaming.
The GS2 (and obviously the GS3) beats the GN on all those counts, which is why I chose the GS2.
SGS2 because the nexus is expensive right now for what it does. Touchwiz is also a nice touch, love it or hate it, it still has the best codec support for videos which is awesome!
soft keys FOR THE LOSE !
I have been using captivate for more than a year now, I have tried almost all different kinds of GB custom roms like serendipity, apex etc and no matter what I did (ext4 lag fix, OC etc) my cappy is still laggy every now and then.
since iphone 4s is still not jailbreakable, I'm thinking of getting a new samsung galaxy II, however I'm not sure if dual core can really solve the android lag issue.
anyone recently switched from samung galaxy I to II? is there any lag problem? thanks in advance
I switched from my i-9000 (international Vibrant) as soon as the SGS II hit the market, not a single regret.

Gs2 is awesome, the android lag isn't noticible to me at all. And I'm underclocked to 1ghz. According to an article the other day android will always have a small lag compared to iPhone because android doesn't stop all background processes when the screen is touched.

I was in the same boat as you, got the sgs2 and never looked back.
I switxhed from the cappy to the ATT SGS2 and love it. No lag i can see. Still have my cappy which is now just a full time test phone running Team Hacksung ICS. The ATT SGS2 is really noce also and has great dev support, specially since the ATT SGS2 and INTERNATION SGS2 have almost everything in common this time around. Still has some differences unfortunately but pretty minor. They seem to be closer than the cappy was to the international sgs1. Way better phone in my view and cappy as much as i loved it doesnt compare.

I went from Sgs to sgs2 and it is significantly better, not perfect but definitely an improvement. Not as smooth as an ipad2 but definitely good enough for me to prefer over iPhone 4s
I switched from the european I9000 to the european I9100.
The I9000 was slower than a granny in the fast lane, and I didn't like the pen tile display at all. The colors were great but the pixels were much too distinguishable.
The I9100 however is fast and the display is really great. The pixels blend much more and the picture is much nicer. Samsung has chosen the right file system this time and they have become really good at building ROMs. There is still a little lag sometimes (Which you will also find is the case with the iPhone 4S) but it's not that bad or frequent. The GPS still isn't perfect with a stock ROM, but there are root fixes that made mine get fixes in about 5-15 seconds when outside.
They righted most of the wrongs. I didn't like the I9000 much. In fact I considered trashing it quite often. But I love the I9100 and I have been recommending quite widely.
IMO if you like/love your S1 and want a 20-30% upgrade mainly in terms of making scrolling etc like 25-50% faster, then S2 is your phone.
If you are expecting a different phone with a different feel and different impact, then you are better off with an Iphone 4S.
The S2 is significantly faster but then I didn't feel the S1 was too slow either. It was passable/acceptable, the S2 is good, not excellent.
The S2 is a VFM upgrade if you have the dough, but it isn't another universe totally. For that you would need to either skip a generation in android or move to another line of phones like Windows or iOS because the Gingerbread family still remains the same and lag hasn't been eliminated completely, so far.
Bottomline, if you are fond of your S1 and are looking for an upgrade which is an overall improvement in all ways, or at least many things, go for a S2. Else don't!
---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
One more thing, the S2 is pretty fast, at least as long as you use the launcher in built in your ROM and not use too many other launchers through ADW etc.
In fact, I would use a s2 over iphone 4s if they could maintain even this little differnce in speed. However, the s2 is definitely not perfect like an ipad 2 but definitely the s2 is good enough to be used as your main phone with little to no complaints
I have both and it seems to me that everything they did wrong on the SI , they got right on the SII . Lag is non existent for me and very happy with the SGSII.
Opinions? What I'll miss from S II, is the Super Amoled Plus. :S But Galaxy Nexus has an HD, wich I adore. I watch movies/anime etc. Also, can anyone explain me what pentile is?
ask yourself if 16GB storage will be enough for your movies etc, comparing to 16GB+64GB for the S2

to be honest, at a sie by side comparison between my sII and the galaxy nexus, i prefer my sII, it feels more sharp and up to date somehow, and it is more powerful that the Galaxy Nexus, not saying the Nexus isnt nice, its very nice, just doesnt feel or look quite as nice as my sII... the screen is cool, but im not exactly squinting to see on mine, superAMOLED plus on the sII is something to behold, it is the best by far, i would wait and see what the sIII brings to the game if anything, everything the galaxy nexus can do bar NFC (on most models) the sII can do, i wouldnt sell it for anything
EDIT: will add i am running ICS LPB on my SII, and it is fantastic, smooth as butter
i've made the switch to the Nexus. much better screen. feels better too in hand. the development is also at lightning speed on the nexus, youre always getting the purest and latest. i would say that you try it out yourself, do some side by side comparisons, then you can make the decision.
ive never looked back
if you think 16gb isnt enough, you could also consider the 32GB GSM version: http://www.expansys.com/google-galaxy-nexus-32gb-black-224348/
Hitching for a new device? Waite for the GSIII!
IF your ORD is that bad, then go get a nexus. Shoo! *wave*
I´d never switch my SG2 for nexus...
Waiting for SGIII!!!
I actually got a nexus, and after one week sold it and went back to my
galaxy s2.
The things that I liked on the nexus, were the screen, audio quality, call quality, mic quality, overall smoothness of the ui, the feel of the device, and how all drivers are open for all the hardware on the device.
But, the s2 is just faster (even with ics), the blacks are blacker, camera is much better, and live wallpapers don't lag the device. Also, I didn't realize how useful some of the touchwiz features are until I didn't have them. I like having so many options for roms.
After much deliberation, I ended up deciding to keep my s2 and wait for the s3, but you may have different opinion.

You're not going to find many people here who will suggest you switch to a Galaxy Nexus; most people who wanted a Nexus have already jumped ship. For videos, the extra resolution isn't even that big a deal--it's much more relevant for small text. Compared to my brother's CDMA Nexus, I prefer the color reproduction of the GS2 screen, though I do think the Nexus feels nicer in hand with its curved shape.
wait for sgs3, it will have amoled HD + screen and also buttonless design, so more screen space to enjoy movies
wait for the sgs3
its just around the corner
Although it is a matter of personal preference, I would stay stay with your SGS2 for now. There is a difference between the Galaxy Nexus and SGS2, but its not that different and its slightly difficult to say that the Nexus if better than the SGS2 all around. With a lot of new phones announced and new one coming (MWC 2012), best to stick with the SGS2. Within a few months, plenty of phones will have ICS and there will be phones that are much better than the SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus.
Skip Nexus and get the Galaxy Note instead. You'll never look back.
nexus or gs2? easy decision...gs2. as for the note...lol is all i will say ..
The dude abides....
Do some research and you'll find out most people who switched to Nexus say it feels slower than SGS2.
I'm not planning on replacing my s2 yet (pretty happy with it, especially with ics lpb ) but if i would loose it today i will probably buy a galaxy note to replace it. The galaxy nexus is a nice device but IMO both the sgs2 as the note are better

I was debating on the three phones for my upgrade, getting the Note, the Skyrocket, or the GSII. I was a little hesitant getting the Note, when the Skyrocket is close to specs, but I am definitely glad that I did.
I love the size of it, and the GPS lock (huge thing for me), is insanely fast. Usually within 2 seconds, sometimes up to 4 seconds.
Amazing phone, I am so glad I got this.
defiantly worth it...my wife has my s2 now....i love this phone and when playing with a ipod or other phones i couldnt believe the difference, they look so tiny,,,but trust me after a week you'll get use it and love it....
I'm already used to large phone screens from owning the Dell steak 5...I haven't seen a note in person so maybe I should do that lol. But Galaxy Note is like their elder brother.
Everything feels way better in bigger and better screen, hd and now there is no way to go back to small one or change to Note 2 when come out.
Most ppl here including me were excited to get it but lil scared of size initially. But I can 100% assure you once you use it, its very comfortable easy light weight HD screen and design, and you won't regret even a sec of it.

Hey,
I've come from the s2 international... And there have been trade offs...
The s2 was a great phone for me. It ran well... Really really well.
Moving to the note, the screen is definitely awesome, hands down, but what I have noticed is the way things render on the screen, mainly in websites, isn't always that smooth, and can be choppy, even with the phone overclocked and custom ROM.
Now I'm not sure if it I'd just my phone, or if its the way the north American chip sets version runs, but it does seem a little different for me, but nothing terrible. Its really hardly notable.
I wouldn't go back to the s2, just cause I love this screen. But I would love to have an international version to try to see if the difference is not just in my head.
I Know someone here is going to call me a moron by some rights, but that's my experience with the note.

But this is just for temporary till ICS comes out.

I don't know about most of you, but but my s2 screen was turning yellow.. I hope my s3 won't have those screen problems. I other than that I really love my s3!

Is anyone having regrets about the build quality after holding it for yourself? That's my biggest reason for wanting the LTEvo

Go hold a evo lte and galaxy s3 the build quality is not close.....the Samsung blows the evo away...the only thing that may be better is the screen on evo.....but you HTC fan boys all say build quality is better and it has not been since the evo og. The evo lte in my opinion is a step in the right direction but you can't argue that shift, 3d where not ****ty phones.... Samsung has destroyed HTC from galaxy 2 to galaxy 3 now....

I don't have anyway here in the states to hold an S3 yet but I've have held and evo LTE and I'm impressed by the build and the premium feel.
S3 + CheckRom + Siyah and I'm gob-smacked. It was good before but now it's at a different level.
It was a sad day when I sold the S2, but the S3 made me forget it very quickly. Massive upgrade.
Big improvements in screen, camera, audio, call quality, GPS (1000 times better) plus look and feel. It has better battery life and charges quickly.
How could it not be an upgrade!

Everything it does is improved over the S2.
Its blazingly fast.
It lasts forever.
It has a massive bright screen.
The screen stays on while you're watching it unless you turn smart stay off.
GPS is greatly improved because it supports GLONASS satellites too, and locks on a lot faster.
Nfc is infinitely useful when combined with programmable NFC tags.
Its light years ahead.

There are couple things I realize after switching to GS3 from GS2.
*Please notice that comments are based on unrooted version (no custom rom) and personal preferences.
Pros
1. Screen is really nice, love the larger screen.
2. Phone seems to be faster in some way, but have not really notice a big difference yet with my current usage load. (actually i did notice some lag in between switching apps, not sure if it is because of ram or what)
3. Love the new camera app, almost no lag time between shots, continuous shooting.
4. like the smart stay feature, even though there is a new app that can do the same.
Cons
1. The brightness adjustment through the notification bar is not available(had to download another app to do that).
2. Swype is not pre-loaded (had to download the beta version)
3. Not sure if I am correct on this one and if it should be considered as 'bad': RAM shows 780mb in GS3 and 837mb in GS2, maybe it reserved more ram for the CPU/GPU in the GS3??
4. The 'active applications' widget is not available in GS3 or maybe I just didn't find it...?
Overall i like the new GS3, the screen definitely is beautiful, would be better if the quad-core already comes with the 2gb ram like the recent Korean version does.
I'll be coming from the original S, I probably wouldn't even be rushing to upgrade if not for the upgraded camera with flash. But excited of course nonetheless, just a bit worrisome over the toughness of the 3, as my original is pretty much invincible.
