[Q] Battery Draining in SGS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i was using 2G the battery life was good for a whole day. How i have switched my connection to 3G, the main problem is the battery life as it drains in a half day. How can i control this ? which application is draining my battery life? what are the other systems that can save the battery life and extend it to a day time when using 3G????

How on Earth should we know? lol
have a read round the many many many battery threads
incidentally, did this really need two threads created for the copy and paste?

Thats becoz I really need to have a solution for this problem as I am not able to use my mobile effectively...
Its MOST URGENT
Desperately looking for a solution ....
Help me if u can really do it

learn to manage your phone better, is it rooted? either way try this, Unless you actually use 3G (I assume most of us use wifi) go to..
Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks and switch network mode to "GSM only"
Not only will you get better battery life, but you'll get a stronger signal too.
hope this helps your problem.

how aboat battery on 2.3.4 frimware when wifi is turn on ???
Dude! 2.3.4 only just leaked! You'll need to wait a little while longer.
Anyways I'm seeing very little drops at the moment, but this always depends of what is running.

A fully charged battery will not drop that quickly in two hours something is wrong .
Reflash the firmware or wait for release of finished 2.3.4 as i understand this is only a test release .

Please check your battery usage info in the settings. There is a very well known bug related to Wifi Sharing eating your battery, even if you did not enable Wifi Sharing.
If your phone gets hot, and battery drains very quickly (in 1-2 hours), this is most probably related to the Wifi Sharing bug.
You can freeze wifi sharing if you have a rooted device, or you will need to check your battery usage info from time to time(mostly when you feel your phone becomes hot even when it stays in your pocket) and force stop Wifi sharing if it starts to show up.
Hope this helps
If this is not the case with you, I do not have a clue

Hy all. Having problems with superuser after flashing darky's rom xxkg1. I don't have enough posts to post it in the dev section so I do it here. I get a FC when try to acces superuser. Do you know what the problem could be? I also reflashed supercore kernel and yet nothing. Thank you in advance.
L.E.: fixed that..just uninstall the program, restart, and install it again . Don't have to be too wise ). Now, another prob (damn I'm stupid): when I dial e.g. *#9999# won't get anything. Why is this? ty again

This is the "Question & Answers" section and is the correct place for this thread. The Development forum is for people releasing development work and should not be used to ask questions. The reason you can't post in there till you have 10 posts is in the hope that you'll understand what the forums are for by the time you can post in there.
When you can, please don't post questions in the development forum.
Thanks, and good luck with your problems

Was just an example. If I dial any mmi code, will get a message like: "mmi code invalid or inserted wrong".
Am I right that the new custom 2.3.4 ROM (Villain, Darky...) are not using a 2.3.4 Kernel only the 2.3.4 firmware and radio? So this might not improve battery life significantly since it is still an old Kernel.
The battery drain bug could therefore only be solved with a 2.3.4 Kernel.
I am new to Android, so are my assumptions right?

I was using LiteningRom for a couple of weeks and when I saw 2.3.4, I tried to update ROM asap. But I couldn't even flash it with Odin as the whole process freezes in the middle...
Few hours later, I achieved installing a 2.3.4 ROM (Infusion) and I'm on it since yesterday. As far as I can see, there's absolutely nothing better in battery management : AOS is still in top of battery usage after moderate usage.
With my SGS, 2.3.4 had solved battery drain, it seems with SGSII it's not the same. But as Schindler33 said, maybe it's because of the kernel.
Wait for the official firmware to come out over kiss and then we can all see if battery life is improved.
Yep, it seems the leaked version is really NOT a final one ^_^
Hope the final will solve this battery drain

There are several threads for this topic.
Why don't you post your question there?
Maybe there is already a good answer for you?!
My recommendation is to calibrate your battery (e.g with BatteryCalibration app from the Market) and un-install all apps you do not need.
Maybe a Task Killer app (I am using Advanced Task Killer from the Market) can help you to eliminate some battery draining background apps.
If that does not help in your case, you can check if your mobile provider supports fast dormancy. If not, you can try to disable fast dormancy in the settings menu appearing after dialing *#*#9900#*#*.
What ROM, kernel and modem is your phone running on?
There are some versions which are better for battery life.

When I use 3G it drains my battery a lot quicker but that's dependent on a lot of things so it's hard to pinpoint what is wrong.
3G is not as widely used as 2G, well in London anyway, and it'll use up lots of battery trying to get a good signal.
3G uses way more battery than 2G or Edge in general use.
I suggest only using 3G when you need to and don't bother with task killers - they use more battery than they save. I use an extended controls widget to switch between 2G and 3G, and also use Tasker to turn on my data every hour for 5 minutes.
As the poster above me suggests - root your phone, install a custom ROM and a kernel such as Speedmod and try a few modems.
I easily last a day or two now with moderate use so search the development sections on xda to find one that suits you.
Hope that helps.
Find the app Betterbatterystats in market or here on XDA and have a look at the partial wakelocks statistics. They show the apps that keep your phone awake. Try to find better settings for the apps with the highest count.

Had downloaded and installed and extended controller for 3G, let me see how it works...
Also is it good to root the device rather than having the factory settings????

Its good root the device if you want to try custom ROMs and kernels. Some are highly optimized for better battery life.
If you do root give VillainROM a go. It looks exactly like stock, is very stable, offers good battery life and has a few themes available for it. I've been running it for a while with speedmod kernel and I'm very happy.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Tried practically every rom under the sun, now back to stock 2.3.5 rom with speedmod kernel, seems the best for battery life, no need to calibrate batteries, this is a myth, simple use for a few days, and all will be well, stay stock, root then try out kernels is my advice.
Oh yes you can do the fast dormancy thing, not that it makes a lot of difference
Calibration of the battery does indeed help. My battery lasted for only 12 hours (100% batterydrain in 12 hours!). This went on for 3 days. I then calibrated the battery through clockwork recovery, without changing anything on the phone. Afterwards I was back to my usual couple of days of batterytime.
I'm currently using CheckRom RevolutionHD, Hardcore Speedmod Kernel k2-12, fast dormancy off and I'm getting quite good results regarding battery life and performance (lost about 1 percent in 8 hours on standby; WIFI always on).
I only calibrate my battery, when I switch to a new romupdate.
Disable fast dormancy could be a bit helpful, if your carrier doesn't support it.

[q] how to increase battery time of galaxy s ii?

I am using galaxy s II. its the best android phone i have ever used so far but the problem is the battery draining. i can only use it 7-8 hours with normal use. please tell me some solution to increase the battery life..
Next question : how to decrease battery life ?
Seriously dude, there's so much threads about battery saver tips, do you know that ?
Try for example "setcpu" or lower brightness or use searchbar to look for more examples. It's not difficult to find solutions ;-)

I did exactly what I read about in the articles that I found on the interwebs using Google.
Read the battery threads in particular the better battery stats post .
Turn off everything that connects aim for 2 % overnight sleep battery drain .
Buy another battery as a spare .

new tip on how to improve battery life in idle state

new tip? Well I've searched the net alot but haven't found it anyway.
I discovered battery drain in idle state, but turning on airplane mode it got much better. Leading me to think it was the phone radio eating batt.
I've tested this on my x10 mini and x10 mini pro running minicm7 2.2.1. Guessing it works for other roms and phones as well.
The battery drain in idle state dropped from 1,5%/h to 0,5%/h giving you MANY ekstra hours before charging.
now the super simple tip:
1. check your current service provider in the notification menu.
2. settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> network operators (wait while phone searches)
3. select the same service provider as you saw in (1).
Just guessing whats going on:
Now the phone is locked to that network and do not use battery to search for the best network.
note: this may cause the phone to loose the signal if you travel to another network. If so, switch back to "select automatically".
Well this seems to work for me here in norway (OneCall).
Let me know it it works for you.
I recommend these app in general to analyse battery drain.
BetterBatteryStats
Gsam battery monitor
My Battery Drain Analyser
I'd also suggest getting v6supercharger or another process-killer to further extend battery life.
Android manages processes and memory good enough. The usage of a task killer is usually not necessary. Perhaps you are using badly programmed apps, find them and deinstall them. That's the better way.
Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the tip, never heard of it.
Seems like its not a process killer, more like a better memory management. So it may in theory save you some cpu and battery. Maybe I'll try it later.
But this thread is about the phone radio. On my phone it uses way more battery than normal.
now I've tried "stMurray Cell Connectivity tracker" and it seems that my phone switches cell tower every minute. Think I have equal signal strength from both towers.
Any tips to slow down the switching rate?

U're right. Auto-killing tasks every x min is a bad idea.
Androids memory and process management is good, but it can always be better. (V6 supercharger?)

..yeah your battery's probably screwed. I'd suggest take a new one
3G can consume a lot of battery in low quality connections. Maybe it is your case.
Verify if it happens on a specific location or everywhere.
Also, configure network mode to WCDMA only. It avoids phone for checking which connection is better (3G or 2G). It drains battery faster,
