There's plenty of information on how to flash an sbf using Windows on these forums, but not much can be found about doing the same from within linux (and now OSX thanks to balltongue! Follow the instructions as normal until Step 7). I didn't come up with this tool or method, but I'm sharing it in the hope that it'll be of some help to others who don't have access to a Windows machine.
Original sbf_flash instructions.
The steps necessary were gleaned from DAG425's sbf tutorial for Windows and from the creator of sbf_flash's blog. All credit and thanks goes to them.
1. On your computer, download both the sbf file you're wanting to flash (extract the .sbf file if it's zipped), and the sbf_flash program. You can get the latest version of sbf_flash at http://blog.opticaldelusion.org (I can't post links on the forum yet apparently. Will edit later. Mod edit - linked.)
2. Open a terminal in the directory where you have the sbf file and sbf_flash program. Type "chmod +x sbf_flash". This will make the sbf_flash file executable.
3. Turn off your phone.
4. Hold down the Power Button and the Volume Down button until the phone displays "Fastboot" above the normal Motorola start-up screen.
5. Press the Volume Down button until it reads "RSD". Press the Volume Up button to select.
6. Plug your phone into the computer using the usb cord. Wait a few seconds to allow your computer to recognize the device.
7. In the terminal (still opened in the same directory as the sbf_flash program and the .sbf file), type "sudo ./sbf_flash nameOfSbfFile.sbf" (obviously you're going to want to change the last part to the actual name of the sbf file you have on your computer) and enter your password when prompted.
Edit: Thanks to balltongue for providing the info on the correct command for running the sbf_flash program on OSX. For OSX, substitute "sudo ./sbf_flash nameOfSbfFile.sbf" with "sh ./sbf_flash nameOfSbfFile.sbf" instead. The rest of the tutorial should work as written.
8. Allow the program to work. It'll take several minutes and your phone will reboot at the end.
*** If the phone boot loops: ***
Remove the battery. Insert battery again and turn the phone on using the Power Button and the Volume Down button again. This time, press the Volume Down button until you get to "Android Recovery". Press the Volume Up button to select it. Press BOTH volume keys once you see the exclamation point in the triangle. Select the "wipe data/factory reset" option with the Volume Down button and initiate it by pressing the Power Button.
Reboot your phone and you should be all done.
***
Hopefully that works. As anyone who's used DAG425's tutorial for sbf-ing on Windows can see, most of this information is taken directly from his tutorial and I've only changed the parts necessary for getting the operation to work in linux. So thanks DAG425! Hopefully someone will find this helpful.

Thanks for the Linux instructions! Glad to have these also!!! If you want you can send me the links and I will post them both here and add a link to this post to my tut... There was a major need for some kind of instructions and so I just threw what was available together.... would have loved to had the time and Linux instructions also....
EDIT: Opticaldelusion.org is down ATM... Do you have a copy of sbf_flash imchairmanm??
wasnt this posted somewhere else before since ive been doing this since i got my x2
Good first post OP. Can you link to DAG425's tut that you mention in the OP? I sticky'd this thread since the other sbf how-to was Windows-only. Always good to have alternatives .

I'm not on my computer right now, so I don't have the file with me. I'll get that and the links to you after work. You can do whatever you think is best with the post/information, and add links where you want. I didn't know about the link restrictions until I was done writing.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Sorry about the lack of functional links and cross-references.

I think once you hit 10 posts you can create links?
At any rate, include the reference links please, just remove the http://. I'll edit your post and fix 'em after the fact.
I don't know if it's because you already edited a link in there, but I can't put the urls in the OP even if I make them invalid. I get the same message about no links.
Here is the link that has the sbf_flash instructions.

And here's the link to the Windows sbf tutorial.

Crap, sorry guy. If you're editing the post, you'll have to remove the link that I put in .
I'll take care of this, since I made the mess. Gotta get that post count up!
Edit - first post updated. Let me know if there's something you don't like, I took a few liberties - but hopefully not many (I didn't change the content of the post )
Looks great! Thanks arrrghhh for linking those pages in an intelligent way.
BTW for those of you who initially looked: the sbf_flash site seems to be back up if you'd like to get the file / give it a try.
Well i had to sbf last night and decided to give it a whirl on my linux box.
It worked fine but took and incredibly long time, close to 25 minutes.
Also as a side note... after sbf in linux i did not have to activate the phone. Whenever i sbf in windows i do.. wonder what the difference is.
I've never had to sbf on Windows, so out of curiosity, how long does it take with your normal method? And is your linux box as beefy as your Windows one?
I don't sbf often, so it doesn't really affect me too much, but I don't remember it taking that long. Maybe about 10-15? I could be mistaken though. I also don't have any kind of knowledge that'd help to troubleshoot if there's something to speed that up. Anyone have any ideas?
The speed doesnt bother me that much it takes about 10-12 in windows on the same box. Im guessing it has something to do with how linux handles the USB, what i really found strange was that i dont have to re-activate afterwards which i always have to do in windows.
I'm an avid Linux user and since I left my DX I have used Windows so far. I just did an sbf last weekend but I think I may redo it just to do it in Linux..... Everything is better in Linux. Thanks
This is also useful for when windowsupdate decides to ruin your ability to use RSDLite to actually do anything.
I honestly thought my phone was f'd up 'cause it wouldn't show up in RSDLite and after trying everything, I booted into linux, followed these instructions and it worked... instantly... as it should.
matter of fact, this thread should be stickied.
Worked like a charm, much nicer than messing around with RSD lite and win drivers.
Thanks.
I do most rooting & sbf via linux
so simple quick and easy..no hassles..
I had been considering installing Linux but had stayed away because of all my needs with Android. now with these instructions I can finally do some testing to see if I am ready to make the break. Thanks.
imchairmanm,
Great post for informing people of sbf on linux. The sbf_flash will also work on OSX. The only difference is how you run the command.
sh sbf_flash nameofsbffile.sbf
You may want to update your info with that.

ok i have been all over the place trying to figure this process out. i found everything that i believe that i need and have saved all info. well i did not get far.
here is what i have done so far. i have dl 1.9.0 from dj steve i have created my install .txt file. i tried the fast boot and thats as far as i get. i try the find driver and there is not even a google, inc folder to choose. if possible i would like to get someone on some sort of chat be it yahoo or whatever that could take the time to walk me through this from start to finish. i know that this is a rather large task but if i could get it i would be greatful.
here is what i am working with.
at&t dell streak 5
android version 2.2
build number 14844
i have taken everything back to off of sd card like the rcoverey and install and 1.9.0 files.
that is all that i know so far and sorry if i am not on the right track but with all of the write ups online it is almost impossible to figure out which is best and easiest ect... well thanks to everyone for the help whether i get any or not.
Start here
Quickest way to ROOT access is to
Hold your streak above your head with both hands
Close your eyes
Shout out loudly " OPEN SESAME " (must be yelled out loudly or will not work)
Then with all the energy summoned
SMASH YOUR PHONE INTO THE GROUND
CONGRATS NOW YOU SHOULD BE ROOTED WITH SUPER USER
thanks marvin for the link i already have been all over that and no luck. i cant even get into fastboot. when i try to bring up the add driver and go to select from list google inc is not there. i have gone over every step a hundred times and dont know what it is. if anyone knows where i can dl the driver file that would be awesome. but i have read other places with guys having the same issue and they dont get any help either so, i will just hold off.
also i am trying to do this on windows 7 with x86 i dont know if this could be the issue. if so i have a vista laptop also if that would be more useful. just looking for info,
and yes i have vista in test mode

There is no reason to actually run the QDLTool on your phone because the ROM you have is later than the one it will install. But the download will include the drivers, unzip it and look in the driver folder for what you need.
just finished with the streak droid 1.9 upgrade and first power up is coming up now mu phone just opened with a nice looking streakdroid logo by djsteve. thanks again to everyone that helped me out it is most appreciated.
how can i be sure that my install.txt file took? want to make sure i got my volume boost and density
ok scratch that ^^^^^ it took
lets say i wanted to modify that txt file on the root to make changes do i have to go back and upgrade through clockwork or will it take automatically with a reboot?? thanks guys
ok well to answer my question lol post whoreing.
i just pwrd on with the vol keys held went to update via .zip again. this was after changing the txt file and the changes took it also saved all my info and setting so i didnt have to worry about setting up all my email and stuff like that again. starting to get the hang of this.
Ok, so after scanning through the SBF thread and a few others and finding instructions all over the place, I decided to bring them all together in one post. Sorry if I don’t mention everybody that contributed these instructions by name but there were a lot of instructions on how to flash the SBF to our phone. You know who you are and I personally thank you and believe everybody else does also.
To begin, download the necessary files and drivers:
Froyo 2.2.2 SBF File
Gingerbread 2.3.3 SBF File
Gingerbread 2.3.4 SBF File
RSD Lite 5.3.1 and Drivers
RSD Lite 5.4.4
1. Reboot your computer and your phone after downloading and installing everything and before you go to flash the SBF file. Use 7-zip to extract the SBF file...
2. Once you have rebooted your computer, go ahead and start RSD Lite and point it at the SBF file and plug your USB cable into your computer ONLY!
3. Turn your phone off.
4. Turn the phone on by pressing and holding the POWER AND VOLUME DOWN buttons until you see FASTBOOT. Press volume down until you reach RSD and press volume up once.
5. Plug your phone into your computer and wait until you see it in RSD Lite and click Start.
6. Your phone will reboot when the process is complete. DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE FROM UNTIL THE COMPUTER UNTIL THE PROCESS IS COMPLETE.
7. If the phone boot loops pull the battery and boot into the stock recovery by pressing and holding power and volume down until the phone says FASTBOOT, once the phone says FASTBOOT, press volume down until you see ANDROID RECOVERY, once you see ANDROID RECOVERY, press BOTH the volume up and the volume down buttons. You will see the familiar triangle with the exclamation point and the Android. At this point press volume up and down simultaneously again and select “wipe data/factory data reset” by pressing the power button.
8. Reboot your phone and you should be back to full factory default, like new out of the box.
If you have any other problem with RSD Lite, try running it as administrator in Win 7/Vista...
Thank you, very helpful and thanks to everyone involved. Let's get this ball Rollin baby!

That is actually a great question Slowz3r.... I would love to know how to open that SBF, but I really have no clue... I will try and see if maybe I can open it in Linux. If anybody around here has any ideas or has already tried this, please let me know...
TIA
I have followed this guide to the letter, even to the point of redownloading both the SBF and the drivers a few times. Even after a reboot, when I plug my phone into the computer it says "Unable to retrieve initialization values from INI file"
I've tried it every day for the past 3 and to no avail, always same issue.
Edit: I did a clean uninstall and reinstall of everything, rebooted, and it worked. So I suppose it was an installation error of sorts.
Anyone else notice that to the right under platform it says 4G Tegra? Some also stated that their computer detected a 4G Modem when the phone was in a certain mode.

Yes, I have also seen this in the options before you get to rsd mode... Don't know what that means or why its labelled that way but it is definitely interesting... It would be great to find out what motorola might have to say about this and if that may be why we have been waiting so long for an update!!! I highly doubt it tho, but still nice to think about...

It should work with Win 7 as that is what I am running... The link I have posted for rsd lite is 5.3... Maybe if you run rsd lite as admin??? I didn't have to but that might be a solution....
It Works!!
This is the first Sbf download that worked for me, i noticed that this one was over 700 mb in size. All the other ones were 482 mb. I guess those were just the partial Sbf. Thanks for this, i really needed it!
I had to do a factory reset of my phone the other day. I used RSD5.3.1 and the 482 mb SBF.
I bootlooped initially on the reboot but after doing a battery pull and then going into recovery, everything worked. I did get a couple settings wrong on setting up the phone but fortunately, there is a Verizon store very close by.
All the bloatware that TB had backed up up prior to me uninstalling came back. After the reload, I re-rooted but haven't uninstalled or frozen anything yet.

follow this bit to the word
How to install using: (desktop) ODIN
Short: unpack the ZIP download, you will end up with a TAR, flash this in ODIN as PDA, and optionally install and run Triangle Away afterwards to reset the flash counter. Beware that this should boot your device into recovery mode (for a few seconds to install SuperSU and CWM Manager) after flashing. Sometimes it doesn't, just flash it again in that case.
Long:
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

No offence OP, using this guys words to help us build up a rapport.
Search is free and very useful, and it'll prevent you getting flamed next time you ask a question if you have searched and couldn't find a suitable answer and your thread starts with "I tried searching but..."
Glad you found what you needed and rooted your device. Oh, and welcome to hell....I mean xda...

I actually used the search and found the right stuff (I think), but now that I have a problem with rooting, I have to get 10 posts to post in thread first.
So I might as well abuse this little thread for it:
In stead of the above mentioned thread I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Is that a proper way of rooting or should I use the other thread? Either way, the tool from the thread I just linked doesn't see my phone. I've tried on both win7 and xp machines and it just doesn't see it. The phone is recognized fine by windows, just not by the tool. So, what to do?

whatever is this method, go for the first (chainfire) this developer is well known for his Cfroot, it's already running on my Samsung galaxy tab and millions of other phones around the world, just follow the instructions (the long one and it's ok if you take more than 30 second just to make sure you didn't forget anything)

FYI Richdog, you are now the top result on Google for "root galaxy siii". How ironic.
How about next time, instead of flaming, post a useful reply, so when someone does actually try and search they don't just get this ****!

I will never apologise or back down from politely asking people if they have done a basic search before asking basic question, which has obviously been asked on here a hundred, maybe even a thousand times. It is other peoples time that is being used to get an answer, and I personally only think thats acceptable if you have really had a look yourself first and genuinely can't find the answer.
The video from XDA sums it up more amusingly and eloquently than I can.

So I've tried doing it many times and even re flashing cyanogen mod 9 on my phone but I still can seem to get rom manager to work. Everytime it prompts me to install clockwork recovery and then at the top, the bar will reach full and then instantly freeze.
I'm running a nightly build anybody able to give me some suggestions?

Be sure to give Rom Manager root permissions.
Please help. I am a convert from Blackberry, the LG Optimus is my first Android. I really want to root this phone, mainly to remove the bloatware and also install a few of the cool apps that can be run on a rooted phone. I have the newer AT&T software version E97011c, and it wont root. How to go back to the old software version so i can root this phone. And good bye Blackberry!!!!
You need to use a tool called LGNPST on your computer to install an old version of the firmware that can be rooted.
I have not done this and can not offer too much advice.
But, you need to:
1. go HERE.
2. Pick a nickname.
3. Set your channel to #lg-optimus-g
4. Fill out the capcha.
5. Ask for the link to LGNPST (it can't be posted on here)
You can ask people there, they know a lot.
Instructions from PhantomPhreak53: (I believe these may be outdated... there is a newer version out I believe, again, ask the people at irc)
1. Install LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981MAN38AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3. 8.1 (LG USB Drivers)
2. Install LGNPSTv1.3_Lab_Verison_RightClickReg (LGNPST)
3. Install LGNPST_GenericModels_Ver_5_0_12_0 (LGNPST Generic Modules)
4. Install LGNPST_Components_Ver_5_0_20_0 (LGNPST Components)
5. Copy the Models folder to C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST\
6. Start a command prompt as admin
7. Type regsvr32 "C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST\Models\LGNPST_LS970.dll"
8. Download the proper .tot file for your phone
9. Rename .tot to .bin
10. Open LGNPST
11. Select the LGNPST_LS970.dll and your .bin file
12. Press Start
If LGNPST errors out at 85%, turn your phone off and hold the power button until the phone powers on, then release.

Then follow the root instructions from carret's guide.

How to "root" your Optimus G
(Optional if you have another means of un-RARing) Download and install 7-zip from here. You need this to open certain types of archives (specifically .rar, but you might also want to open .tar, .bz2, or other types of archives in the future). This program is supremely awesome in its ability to open almost any archive you throw at it. It's also unobtrusive and efficient.
Download and install LG USB Drivers from here. Without these drivers, your computer won't be able to effectively communicate with your phone. This is vital for the steps we will be taking.
Enable USB debugging by going to Settings->(General)->Developer options" and checking the box next to "USB debugging." You will get warnings. You can probably ignore them. This setting will allow you to run commands on your phone from your computer (via USB). For more info on the Android Debug Bridge, click here.
Download and extract (using 7-zip (or whatever)) the root exploit from here.
Connect your phone to the computer with your USB cable.
Open RootOptimusG.bat and follow its prompts. Your phone will reboot twice, do not disconnect the USB cable until this has happened and the script says it was successful.
Go to the Play Store and install SuperSU (or click here. Run it and make sure it works. This program allows others to gain access to superuser privileges. For more info on rooting and what kind of stuff it lets you do, click here and/or use Google.
If that didn't work for you, try bigworm50's guide here.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and don't do the version that requires all of the steps that bleached posted. They'll work, but they are a HUGE PITA compared to downloading and installing: tSilenzio's Automated LGNPST.zip In addition, it's a newer version of LGNPST. I believe that it's available on the irc channel that bleached linked.
LGNPST is grayed out

Sorry for being a noob but I downloaded tSilenzio's automated LGNPST.zip and I can load the LGNPST_LS970.dll file. But LGNPST is grayed out for everything except the DLL section. I can't pick the bin file even though I already downloaded the tot file and converted to a bin file. The phone is plugged in PC software mode. Thanks for any help.

I think its volume up, volume down, and power. Or if that doesn't work turn it off and hold up and down, then plug in the usb.

Well, I did say I thought there was a new version. I have not had to use LGNPST yet, so luckily I'm pretty in the dark about it.
Thanks for pointing it out though.
:good:
Thank you. 1 more thing, when Jelly Bean comes out for this will I be able to upgrade over the air (If I only remove bloatware and install a few apps that work on rooted phones?) ]
Hello. I've tried using multiple ROMs in my rooted phone with KDZ Updater, and I guess that one of the updates hanged, or maybe it was something else... I really don't know. What I do know is that my phone currently isn't able to enter recovery mode, and is also not showing any boot logos (neither 'LG' nor 'Android').
I did see some threads about this, one of them talking about starting in Download Mode and using KDZ in CS_Emergency mode with some French ROM. Well, I tried that and as soon as I press "Launch software upgrade" the program freezes until I plug my phone off the PC.
I feel as if something was stuck in my throat and the only way to get it out is by completing this... so any help will be greatly appreciated!
PS: All this happened in the process of trying to install Cyanogen Mod 10.1 (which I did not try yet).

Need to make sure to get the right firmware, DLL file, and make sure you have the right port set on the program.

Thanks for the reply!
I appreciate the info, and I'll be checking what you've said. All the links in that thread are inaccessible because Fileserve only lets you download what you upload. Anyway, I'm curious as to what this "DLL" file does on a smartphone... why do I need these things? I never heard of them being mentioned anywhere.
I'll start educating myself ASAP. Meanwhile, thank you very much (and by the way, if it's of help to anyone, my phone is a GT540g from Personal, Argentina.
You're welcome. Sorry, didn't check to see if the files were still there and most every other site just had reposts of the fileserve links. However, finally found what you need here:
http://files-gsm.ru/lg flesh/GT540gAT-00-V20a-722-34-DEC-28-2010+0.dz.zip
I found this dll for your phone but not sure if it works with the firmware you have for that version:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/9v9e78xronadm0c/GT540g_100506_MP.dll
"A dynamic-link library (DLL) file is an executable file that allows programs to share code and other resources necessary to perform particular tasks..."
Basically it ties together a few things in Windows to let the flash tool work for your specific device is my understanding. But they have to be specific to the phone or it won't run once it checks the build.prop of the phone vs the firmware you're trying to install.
Keep in mind, I do not have this phone and have no way to test if they will or won't work so just like any other mod or upgrade - you do so at your own risk.
Thanks, but...
First of all, I'm very sorry not to have replied before, but I've been busy. Anyway!
Thanks, I appreciate the links, but I don't understand where to put the .dll file in my phone. I know you'd think I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to use Google, but I actually did search beforehand. I simply don't get where to put it.
Also, if it's worth the shot, I just noticed that I should disable the "Modem" that activates when I plug my phone in. The problem is, KDZ just does this simple log [attached] and states "===FINISHED===" (Note that I have 2 Modems listed in my device manager [attached screenshot])
Solution GT540
Thanks for your help everyone, I came to a solution after a full year lol. Here's my enlightenment, from another Thread:
Just wanted to leave my 2 cents here, I've been trying to do my best since around august 2014, no success. 2 days ago I retried this, and I DID IT! I will tell everyone what I did very shortly:
My problem that I solved: I can boot, device works like a charm. But: no boot logos, no recovery.
My solution for TL;DR: UNINSTALL ALL DRIVERS FROM DEVICE MANAGER 1ST, then reinstall. After that, flash a fastboot ROM and use it to WIPE ALL THE DATA IN YOUR PHONE! THIS was what I needed and was never explained: you had to WIPE the old data in order to get the boot screens back.
IN THIS ORDER (THANK YOU to those people from previous replies, gathering all your info was of great value):
Uninstall all of your phone drivers from your PC!!! This is what made most of my headaches go away, just use Device Manager and uninstall anything from LGE. After that, plug in your device in your USB ports (always BACK ports, not front ports, important). It should detect all drivers and download them.
IF it fails (it generally does with LGE USB Modem), you can go to Device Manager > Unknown Device (the one that wasn't recognized) > Right Click and Update > Choose 2nd option, then choose "choose from a list of local controllers" (or whatever the button says). After that, scroll down to LG Electronics, Inc. and install what didn't install.
I also found these drivers, but I did not test them: http://www.mediafire.com/download/p693hcz6kkouh19/USB_Driver_LG_GT540.zip
Huzzah!
Now you're set to begin:
FIRST thing you wanna do is a factory reset, this is something I'd forgotten with time, don't make the same mistake as I did. You can do it by turning your phone on and pressing Volume +/- & Home & Quick Search buttons all together for 5 seconds (it works, be patient and wait for it, even if you open the camera or any other stuff).
Download this Google SDK Tools (unzip and put the folder in C:\ drive) and this Fastboot drivers for GT540 (unzip and put the files inside the folder in C:\android-sdk).
Skip this next line if you know your ROM has fastboot.
Now, if you don't have a ROM with fastboot, I recommend you use either European Open+Fastboot or V20C Orange France Fastboot ROM.
Click to collapse
Since you have Fastboot enabled, now all you need to do is turn off your device (all this with its battery on it, no weird things) and hold the Camera button before turning it back on. This should take you either to a black screen, or simply to no display, like me. Either one will work anyways.
Now press the Windows key > Type cmd and open it with Right Click > Run as Administrator.
In it, type all this, command by command (you can paste by right clicking):
cd C:\android-sdk
fastboot -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase system
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
Click to collapse
And now it's go time! Do what everyone else says in here: Take out your phone's battery, SD and SIM cards, fire KDZ Updater up as Administrator (If your KDZ freezes, then it's either faulty or you did not install msxml, look for a good KDZ that comes with that file and delete your current one), choose CS_Emergency PhoneMode and:
1-Plug your phone while holding the volume DOWN button (don't worry! My phone didn't show "Download Mode" either, if you hear the Windows "Somethingpluggedin" Bump noise, it's ok).
2-Flash French V20A
3-Unplug your phone once KDZ says "==FINISHED==".
4-Plug it once again, holding the volume DOWN button.
5-Flash out.kdz (remember! it's CS_Emergency).

THANK YOU XDA!
