issues with go launcher ex - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a random question. anyone here encountered slow laggy scrolling through menu when using live wallpapers with go launcher ex? is there any solutions to rectified it? thanks for any help given.

I've just tried and no lag for me!
Maybe to many apps running. Is the lag still there just after a reboot?

When using LWP lag will be there. It's simple. Still you can use a still Custom image or the theme background in App drawer, which will reduce the lag a bit.

Lag
Hi,
for me it works ok - but try to kill some background Process.
I do this sometimes and it speeds up the phone ...
You can use the GO Taskwidget or any other Program.

The reason I came back to TW
as TW uses GPU to make it super smooth, live wallpapers works perfectly.
with Go, it runs fine whilst nothing else is running in the background, but once you get a few apps open the lag starts to show, best have a static wallpaper when using GO.

thanks for all the help given. yes vegaznc. it does still lag a bit when i reboot the phone. i downloaded the go taskwidget as suggest by NobbyLk and it does slightly improve the smoothness but not as smooth as the original TW launcher. i will try out different method and see how it goes.

[Q] Live Wallpaper Lag

Is there a way to stop the wallpaper from moving when switching between home screens? That way it would be a lot smoother while a live wallpaper is running. I know Evil Eris does this by default but I'm using CELB Froyo.
Launcher Pro home launcher replacement offers this option - to disable wallpaper scrolling. I just tried it on a LWP and it works for that as well. Hope this helps.

I never thought of that! I use LauncherPro so ill give it a shot. Thanks!
You're always going to have lag on LWP's.
Actually that fix worked! The only thing that lags now is the app drawer so i guess your right lol
Surprisingly, I have almost no lag with LWPs. Not all of the market ones work, but the ones that do work fine. When I first starting using them in some 2.1 roms they lagged a little. I found that if the LWP has settings, tweaking them to use less CPU or effects greatly improved lag.

Home Screen and Application list Lag when Scrolling

Well, I'm having a frame drop or some kind of lag when im scrolling in application list too fast, sometimes it happens when im scrolling slow. And the same goes for homescreen, sometimes i get like 1 second lag which is very noticeable i don't know if this is normal or Galaxy S2 shouldn't lag like this at all.
I've tried Factory Reset, Change firmware, Data/Cache Wipe.
Im currently running 2.3.4 XXKG2 i got this lag in KF7 and KG1 too
I don't know if everyone is having this problem or only me, even ADW Launcher and Launcher PRO lags a little .. I don't have any heavy application open that can cause this i only have Facebook and eBuddy open.
Do you guys think if i tick Partition and load a .pit file will fix this? Or mabe a Dalvik Cache wipe? :/ Im sad even the iPhone has smoother scrolling u_u
iOS is all about it's interface. You can't compete to it with Android. Never tick partition, why would you think that'd fix it? Are you running a lot of widgets or anything? Because I cannot reproduce this lag you have.
If you do all those clean installs and wipes and flashes, the cause just can't be your phone itself. After the flashing, do you restore your apps using some titanium backup or something? Maybe the settings or apps are a little faulty.
Try using a CPU monitor to see if anything sucks up CPU power, because I can't imagine the phone lagging from nothing.

You're not going crazy buddy. My HTC Sensation 4G exhibits the same problem when scrolling through lists. This is annoying as hell while my friends Nexus S flies all over the damn place!
Note to HTC: You don't know how to code. Stop with it! You can make merry in your wet dreams but give us the option, as users paying $500, to kick sense to the curb like the dirt it is.
PS I am using GO Launcher EX which is awesome.
I was in stock KF3 --> NO LAG Installed KH3----->LAG when scrolling between homescreens Went back to KF3--->NO LAG Installed KH4----> LAG when scrolling between homescreens. BUT this LAG goes away if i choose Live Wallpaper! I dont wanna have Live Wallpaper cos it drains the battery...I use stock wallpaper with only few icons on 1st and 2nd homescreen and BOOM here's the lag!!
dammn it I'm having this lag problem while scrolling through home screens also can somebody help find a fix

I had the same issue. Went from original 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 and Lag'd, so went back, now on 2.3.6 and still lagging.
The live wallpaper fix does actually fix the issue as well, which is weird. I only run 2 widgets on my desktop.
If anyone has any ideas it'd be much appreciated.
EDIT: Just had a quick play around with it. It seems if I remove the Program Monitor widget that samsung use initially, it removes any lack. Stupid TouchWiz.

thank!!
i just upgraded from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6.
i was wondering why is the home screen scrolling so choppy, its like 3 fps only.
i did a full wipe and clear cache, but its still the same.
after reading your post, i tried to remove the program monitor widget and my scrolling is back to normal.
why program monitor widget cause lag in this 2.3.6 version?
it was smooth in 2.3.3, unbelievable, samsungs own widget causing lag.

How to reduce lag

I bought a Samsung galaxy tab a few weeks ago, I love everything bout it except the lag, scrolling is choppy, interface is laggy etc... is there anyway of fixing this without rooting?

Probably not. From what I've read and seen personally myself, rooting it and installing a new ROM will get you better results. It'll still be slightly choppy until we get to an Android version that has hardware acceleration (from what I understand).

Rooting the tab and installing a custom rom (like In Paris v5) with a custom kernel (like pershoots kernel) reduces the lag drastically.
However to get fully rid of lag, the UI needs to be hardware accelerated as well which is one of the features of android 4.0 ice cream sandwich which should be out in the coming months.
are you on the latest touchwiz update? Samsung made some good improvements in that one. Though for me rooting and installing custom stuff is a lot of fun
Using a replacement launcher can help a lot. ADW EX launcher works great on the tab and drastically reduces lag scrolling through home screens.
ADW launcher crashes too often for me. When I press the "home" icon to exit an app, I would get a blank screen for a couple of minutes, until it force close the launcher. I don't get this with stock browser.

I use adw since two mouths now and I never had this problem maybe it is related to your custom rom?

Laggy Homescreen

Has anyone noticed their homescreen has gone laggy when moving from screen to screen?
I like the default launcher, so I'm in no position to change it, but it's developed alot of lag since I first bought it exactly a week ago today.
Only plays up on the default launcher.
had mine over a month, and I find it to be the fastest android tablet in terms of switching screens...very smooth experience over here so far.
Thanks for the response - I wonder if a data reset would do the trick.
agreed that it is one of smoothest tablets on the market. I sometimes experience lag if I have a live wallpaper active. perhaps getting a task killer with a widget on the home screen could help quickly kill anything running in the background that could be the culprit of the lag.
Everything is running smoothly except the home screen and I don't really want to have to do a reset.... hmm
Have you loaded up your screens with tons of shortcuts? If I remember correctly it made my homescreen animations jerky but I then switched to Launcher Ex.
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using xda premium
theres nothing on my homescreens lol
I agree with the OP, the launcher's performance is sub-par. I don't have any live wallpapers, or hardly any icons, no widgets, and I can see it's not perfectly smooth. I installed ADW Launcher which is clearly significantly faster and what I would consider perfectly smooth and fluid. Anyone that thinks their launcher isn't choppy probably just needs to compare against a trial install of ADW.
I like the look of the default launcher though lol
I find this very strange that people are experiencing this lag. I am using the default launcher, a few incons on main screen, and at least one widget on every other screen, some 2 or 3 widgets, and still super smooth... way better than samsung tablets, asus, motorola, etc....
Should I do a reset in the short term?

Simple ICS lag fixes

I have tried this on both my Razr ICS and my gf's Galaxy Note ICS and it works.
On both phones, they are pretty fast until you start to install stuff.
After applying these, the phone is much smoother even with around 200 user apps.
1) Use Autokiller memory optimisation, root needed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autokiller&hl=en
This is a common method which android veterans already know, which is to change android's internal autokill values. This is not the same as task killers!
On both phones, I use "aggressive" preset.
For other tweaks like V8 supercharger, it's recommended values are closed to autokiller's "Extreme".
I added more tweaks to the post.
2) Turn on Force GPU rendering under developers mode. Most games and apps seem to work fine with it on.
3) Turn on background process limit to 4: I thought this is interesting (from JerseyFF) so I tried it out, seem good for daily use.
(update: after a while setting for this will revert to standard, there's no way to fix this yet)
4) Use Nova launcher. (root required for Motorola widgets)
The default launcher is smooth but it likes to reload every now and then (even with default autokill values). Tried Apex launcher but it's not as smooth as default launcher. Nova launcher is close to the default launcher which allow more tweaks and and yet it is buttery smooth. Do not update to beta though. I tried it and it's a lagfest.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&hl=en
VM heap size app no longer works after ICS update. If anyone knows how to fix that, please share.
Feel free to add any more tweaks or tips to make RAZR ICS better.
Is this at all somehow related to the Background Process Limit that is able to be set under Developer Options with ICS now?
It has a Standard Limit setting, No background processes, and At most 1 (through 4) processes for options.
Does anyone know what the value for Standard is?
In background process limit, it limits a number of background apps running, while the autokill values limit the number of bg apps running based on the amount of memory left, and killing off lower priority processes first.
The default values for background process limit is therefore "varies".

Updated first post with more tweaks.
This is my favorite launcher. Smooth... I am using it since I got the RAZR.

Wow the auto killer is quite the find! Sped up my phone allot. Still running quite hot though
Thanks!
Thanks for the info, I'll confirm that upon bootup after applying the Aggressive setting, I tried scrolling around the Motoblur homescreen and thought it was smoother. But then the Superuser allowance for Autokiller kicked in right in the middle of me scrolling around and I noticed quite a difference in scrolling speed, it just suddenly got faster and smoother and the framerate looked as if it had increased by about 5 FPS. I also did tweaks #2 and 3 as well, but I think Autokiller makes the biggest difference. A good find for sure!

Use setcpu and create profiles to set cpu speed lower when screen off and when battery is overheating. There's a free, older ver on xda.
Also you can use juicedefender to make your 3g connection turn off when screen is off. This should also help keep your phone temp down when you're not using it. Note that it will turn itself on every few min to receive whatsapp, mms and emails etc. (not for whatsapp hoes)
Hi, thanks for your tips. I don't know what lag experience you experiment but I hope this works for my RAZR lags. What is happen to my RAZR is that when I enter to apps drawer, non of the icosns appear and instead the "loading circle" takes place until the apps appears. Also when I exit any app and go to home, none of the icons of widget appears, they take half second to reapper.

That's called redraw. Try using apex and there is an option for keeping the launcher in memory so it loads faster

When I first installed Nova launcher, it asks for root access when going into widgets.
Try going to Nova settings ->Drawer-> Check Widgets in drawer (requires root permissions for system app)
Moto widgets like fav. contacts doesn't work well because I can't "pull down"... but it's there, including Motocast widget.
You may want to manually grant Nova launcher root access.

This is why I'm using Nova launcher instead. There's a free version, do try it. It may still take a while to load the app drawer icons after playing a game, but the 'redraw' for Nova's desktop pages are pretty fast. I also liked how it switched to a tablet version when I'm using Webtop mode.
Do try Apex as well. I didn't like it as it felt laggy when I'm scrolling my desktop pages few months back. It may have improved now and many users are complimenting it. As for myself, I have already bought Nova Prime and I'm sticking to it.
