I recently flashed the Batista70 FOXHOUND EDITION 2.4 ROM. I noticed that the ROM came with several apps bundled with it including BLN, some visual candy, and other tweaks. I had wanted to completely format my usb storage/sd card and all data and so ended up (needlessly) doing a factory reset from CWM recovery. The configuration of the phone changed completely. New background, and lockscreen wallpapers, wayyyy fewer integrated apps (obviously), and the scrolling was now MUCH slower from screen to screen. I recovered the apps I wanted with Titanium Backup and flashed the TWD 2.0 kernel. Things are snappy again but I know I'm missing a bunch of extra stuff and the original rom seemed optimized with the bundled kernel.
Are these custom roms fine to be factory reset? and if not/so how drastic can the effects be? I mean my phone actually got slower.
Yes I can just reflash the whole rom but I am a less is more guy so since i've got speed and stability I'll stay put for now. I'm just curious, for knowledge sake.

I am not very familiar with custom ROMs, but stock ROMs do fine with factory reset.
So, it might depend on the individual custom ROM, whether it gets problems after a factory reset or not.

I appreciate the feedback. I'd like to ask the question in the developer forum but of course my post-count is much too low. Don't know if I should bother the dev with a PM, but maybe one of the senior members who contribute to the specific thread for the Batista Foxhound 2.4 rom. It's obvious that I've missed out on some optimization otherwise I wouldn't have experienced the slow-down.
I've noticed that my contacts list doesn't scroll as quickly as it did before the reset, even with the new kernel.

try to reflash but first do a factory reset, wipe cache partition and wipe davilk cache. leave it untouched for 10 minutes after reboot to optimize applications then do a full reboot again for 2 times. batista70 foxhound 2.4 is a great great rom!

Thanks for the input. I'm experimenting with new roms and kernels and will probably check out batista again and do a standard flash to get a full comparo.
I appreciate the insight. Thanks given.

As you all know, before installing new rom we we have to wipe data and cache in recovery...
But do we have also to wipe dalvik's cache?
As you read on every ROM thread, it is advisable to do a CLEAN wipe meaning all of it before installing a different rom. I personally don't find any difference between wiping and not wiping.
When upgrading CyanogenMOD nightlies wiping is pointless, and a waste of time. When switching between Sense-based ROMs and CM etc. then a full wipe is recommended, but not always needed. Wiping dalvik cache will never hurt
Just a thought here, but isn't DC in /data ? So if you wipe data you wipe DC as well, no?
I've been flashing Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 rom but the only thing I am seeing is the HTC screen for over 10 minutes. Is there anybody helps me to solve this issue? I am newbie so I cannot post in Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 topic.
Thank
I always wipe because it cleans the dust. As GrammarFreak said, when switching between CM nightlies, it is pointless as of the minor changes that come with them. But switching to an entirely new ROM (like stock -> CM) I thin it is better to wipe everything. The cause: Android DO collect junk, and a clean system is always nice.
Regarding contact, sms and other app data: backup to phone and cloud, simple as hell.
thanks for the advice. so if you flash anew rom, do u lose all ur apps every time? i'm flashing ics on my g2 alpha 8 right now. so i will find out soon enough

In my experience (using a HTC Desire HD) you only lose your apps and settings when you perform a full-wipe before flashing a new rom. When you update your rom without wiping, your settings and apps are not removed. However, I personally like to do a full-wipe before flashing a rom, because it clears out al the dust and gives you a fresh new phone.
If you don't want to lose your apps and data, but you do want to wipe, you can offcourse always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of the apps and data.
Just do it! It's free (costs only a slightly longer startup the first time after you wipe dalvik)!

in my experience, this happens when you dont clear the cache prior to updating the rom. in my case, I had to re-apx mine, since I didnt figure this out until I had tried the factory rom. good thing I had the SBK and CPUid, or it would have been even a more painful experience!
This phone was an insurance replacement from ATT, so alway a bit wary of these refurbished phones.
So for the longest time it has always been a bit glitchy, hanging, and unstable. I assumed it was a software problem, and something i had done wrong when flashing...but now I am wondering if maybe my phone is a lemon. Lately it has been rebooting randomly on its own,
I wanted to try flashing back to stock, just to start from scratch, and I did with Da G's stock rom . Then i just rooted it with Da G's root, and put on CWR. Then I flashed King Kang Rom. It's been still real buggy. Maybe I need to to stock ICS or JB then flash a ROM? OR maybe it's just this phone....either way not real happy with the stability i've been dealing with.
If youve tried multiple roms and stock roms and its still buggy then its probably the phone, I have got so many replacement phones that were duds
Are you doing a wipe between all those roms or just flashing one over the other? That could be a major problem that is easily fixed.
Yes, i do full wipes/factory reset in CWM every time.
I know i have seen some guys say you must flash like 3 times, so maybe i'm not flashing it enough times or something..? i also saw someone say don't touch your phone for 15 minutes after flashing. i have no idea if these tricks actually work or what. doesn't seem to be a definitive rule book on how to flash the right way
How are you restoring your apps? TB or letting Play reinstall them?
using TB. I usually do a just apps reinstall, then data
Was the TB backup from a different version of android, i.e. GB, ICS then installed on JB?
yes, i did create it on an ICS rom. you think that could be causing me problems?
Good possibility. I had the same issue. Moved from CM9 to CM10 and restored through TB. Lots of FC and reboots. Wiped and let Play reinstall everything, now its smooth.
great thought and worth a shot if that's what could be causing a problem. so did you lose all your data then with all apps? msgs, etc? sucks to start from complete scratch. i'll even miss call log
Lost data, but was able to d/l everything else. Messages and call logs were gone. It is worth it to have a working phone with out glitches. Let me know if it works.
Well a good test is to install a known solid ics problem free ROM like Padawan or Black ice? (exact name escapes me). If it works for u then over clock it to 1836 with setcpu and u will have a ROM VERY close to the JB rom smoothness but actually works.
If u still have problems then u may very well have a flaky phone.
(Oh yeah don't get to worried about stuff like wipe 3 times etc...old wifes tales. I haven't done that for over a year on 3 android phones. ). Also it is Safe to restore apps AND data with titaniumb (just not system data).

+1 on the old wives tale. Seems more like a placebo effect. I only wipe once, and I've flashed roms on tons of phones.

tried installing padawan...so far so good, have not overclocked yet....will report back
Some roms will format your system partition prior to flashing the rom while others do not.
Beyond the wipe of data, cache, dalvik and such, it is wise to go into " mounts and storage" and format the system partition while in CWM recovery.
This ensures that nothing remains on the device before the new rom image is pushed to the system partition.
I agree that wiping 3 times is a bit over the top, but wiping the entire image base before flashing a new one is almost always mandatory.....g
For future reference, you can back up call and sms logs and restore them without causing lags or fc. The logs are simple .xml files.
i have Slim's latest on my I777. i am having constant shutdowns & SOD's, like every few minutes. the twist is that i have had the same release of Slim on the phone before, several times in fact, and i had the occasional SOD, but not constantly like now. i have installed Slim a number of times because i like to try new ROMs, and i keep coming back to Slim cus i like JB.
this must be diagnosed, because i believe now that something was messed up a bit along the way of flashing ROMs, mods, and kernels, but our awesome ROM supporters in their threads have their limits they have told me, and i should ask here since this is a general question about the phone & system. i am seeking help here relating to the rest of the phone and system that may become damaged somehow, and i want to clean up my system to end this problem. logcat & last_kmssg linked below.
to be clear: i am rooted correctly, am running the right software for the I777, always check my MD5's from the phone before flashing, clear my caches when needed, wipe dalvik before flashing kernels, etc etc.
interestingly, i fully wiped/factory reset, formatted system, dalvik, wiped batt stats, and fixed permissions, then reinstalled stock Slim last night because i thought maybe my settings were trouble, so i decided to run an out-of-the-box Slim, changing only the dpi and launcher. no change.
i've tried Siyah's latest after running Jkay's kernel cleaner as well. no change. something is making my phone shutdown/SOD constantly, and it may not be the ROM. others don't seem to be having this issue. i have little running on the phone. just accuweather, Date in Tray Pro, and Apex Pro. no overclocking/voltage changes... nothing fancy at all. so i'm just perplexed.

Nothing jumps out at me but you need to backup your data and SDCARD to a PC, flash back to stock..... when stock boots up perform a factory reset and test with the stock firmware... if it work fine.... root and install the ROM fresh and clean and test without installing anything else. If it again is fine then install every app from the Market. if you want to restore your recent data afterwards that is up to you but There are so many variables that could be causing your issue and you need to step back and try to find the cause one step at a time.

thanks shoman. much appreciated for the tips.
You wouldn't happen to be using an aftermarket phone charger would you? I was working on a phone behaving like that and it was the charger. If you lifted up on the plug a little while plugged in, it would wake the phone from sleep and constantly restart it. It also did something to the ROM or possibly the Kernel cause it started restarting while not plugged in and the power button quit working. I used a known good Samsung charger and installed AOKP JB with the kernel that came with and it fixed everything. I replicated this problem with two different chargers. It is possible that the USB port on the phone was worn. However, no matter how I moved the cable with a Samsung charger, nothing bad would happen.

no I've never used one.
but it appears this was all caused by the app Screen Off And Lock by Katecca. I had the donate version. its always worked for me on every ROM up through ICS, but it seems to wonk out JB. I changed to Lock Screen App by Kenneth Cheng and have had zero problems in days now, which is a first.

Can anyone help.
I have recently started using Omega Rom...i previously was running stock JB.
I found Omega Rom V34 very slow, laggy and it crashed at least once a day.
I have just upgraded to V35 of omega.....its doing the same thing. Its just shocking.
With so many people using it and rating it so highly, it must be something ive done wrong as people would not use this rom as it is installed on my phone.
I used CWM recovery mode to install V34, i think its version 6.0.4? I got the CWM and rooted it etc through SGS3 Toolkit V6.
When i upgraded to V35, i simply, rebooted the phone into recovery mode using the new menu that i got from the V34 rom.
When it installs, it clears all the cache etc on its own.
When V34 installed i recovered all my apps using titanium backup. When V35 installed, for some reason all my apps were installed when it switched back on.
Any advice appreciated, im on the verge of going back stock!
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that I did a full wipe using the Samsung galaxy S3 toolkit the time I stalled v34.
when I installed v35 just just used the installer so i don't think it did a full wipe.
Please advise the best tool for the full wipe. thanks

i had been on omega and it was smooth as butter. perhaps there are apps that causes your phone to consume big memory and lag...
or you know, you can just flash another one if you are unhappy with it xD

Yeah,
I re-flashed with Android Revolution HD, and used the perseus Kernel.
Running sweet now!
Really happy with it so far.
If you're relying on the installer to clear your system and data partitions, that's where your lag and your crashes are coming from. You have to either use a Superwipe script which doesn't come with ARHD or Omega, or the much easier solution is to just clear cache/system/data partitions from recovery.
edit: let me know on here if you don't know how to do those things and I'll point you in the right direction to the best of my knowledge.
I have the same problem
Flashed latest version of OMEGA onto Samsung S3
Featurewise it's perfect, but there is an issue - like you say, it may be a clash with an installed app.
The lag is most noticeable when I bring up the Apps List, but I find over time it gets worse - if I reboot my phone it's improved again although the Apps List can still be slower than before to load.
I did think a likely candidate was avast, but I have the same issue if I don't use Avast.
Oh and I definitely wiped all relevant partitions prior to the install.
btw I'm not here to criticise OMEGA rom - didn't cost me a dime and lots of happy punters out there.
I have been running various flavors of AOKP ROM's on SG3's for several years now. I recently obtained a refurb S3 and set it up to do the usual.
It came with stock TW 4.4.
Using ROM Manager I installed CWM and made an image of the stock phone. I then installed my AOKP variant and loaded my apps, blah blah. All is good.
I've since decided I want to revert back to TW for awhile. I restored my nandroid and I get the interminable GAPPS failure messages. I have on occasion been able to get it to calm down and have a working phone, usually be uninstalling play app and clearing framework services cache. This is extraordinarily painful and doesn't always work. I've done all the usual, reinstall GAPPS, etc., and basically it is a MAJOR headache just trying to get the image to function.
But....When it does work the phone does not see my SIM card, IMEI, nothing.. I have no mobile connectivity. Restoring the AOKP nandroid brings me back to a fully functioning phone.
So my questions are:
Can anyone explain to me why the TW nandroid is giving all these GAPPS issues and how to circumvent/fix it?
Why is the system seeming to lose my IMEI/SIM info? Is there a way to fix that? Should I have done something different in my setup/nandroid creation?
Lastly - I don't quite understand how CWM works. There is a recovery image. When I do factory reset, is it resetting to this recovery image as opposed to the factory TW? I seem to think so, when I do a reset I see the android version is not what my factory one is.
Thanks all.
