Background:
I started off with with stock ROM + Root. I then applied the 14 toggle Mod. I've also applied a battery meter mod from UOT. I've recently flashed Mikey's S8 ROM which if my memory serves, had the CRT(?) animation when locking the phone. Well I decided that I was more of a fan of the 14 toggle mod than the one that Mikey included in his ROM (just personal preference). I applied the 14 toggle mod after flashing S8.
Problem:
If I hold down the power button, my phone appears to perform a 'soft' reboot. It looks like my launcher crashes which causes the reboot possibly. I get no menu when holding the power button down, just the crash. I also have no animation when pressing the power button to lock the screen.
Is there anyway to resolve this without reflashing S8?

Unless you are very technically inclined and have a lot of extra time to waste
there is no way to resolve this issue unless you reflash the rom.
Reflashing the rom is by far the fastest, easiest and the most sure way
to resolve your issues.
I was hoping there may be a couple files that I could replace and flash. I'm fairly technical, but still learning the ins and outs with Android. My only Qualm with reflashing is running into the same issue with the Battery Mod and 14 toggle Mod.

I can tell you one thing for sure, and that is that the 14 toggle mod
is NOT causing the problem at all. I use it all the time and I also
use the UnNamed 1.04 custom rom.
So most likely it's the Battery Mod which is causing the problem.
I use the blue neon digital battery mod with my phone which works great.
Try to install/flash a different battery mod see what happens.
Good Luck!

I just recently flashed Superclean 2.9.2. Runs great, btw. Since I like touchwiz, I installed the TW framework from Adry's SC thread in the developers forum. Now, the power button doesn't offer a menu for shut off. A short press gets sleep mode, a long press has the phone vibrating like an error occurred and then resets. My guess is that it's due to the TW launcher. Any suggestions as to how to get a better TW launcher or a way to get the options to shut-off or airplane mode back?
Thanks.

You are probably putting frameworks/jars together that dont all have reboot options built in
Just reflash the rom...if you want twlauncher back just pull it from the deodexed eb01 in development or the modified one from crushd in themes/apps
Try launcher pro, you might like it... i was a little hesitant at first, but i cant stand tw now. Lp offers a more real android experience, tw is trying to be like the iphone. the combination of lp, sc 2.9.2, and spare parts and all the customizing you can do with each one makes for a hell of a fast, fun phone... imo

Hi! I'm using GingerReal v1.0 and as you know it hasn't a cooked in Extended Power Menu and percentage battery indicator. So, I began to use Ext.ded Pwr Menu patch (which is shared here by Lovetz), it's very good. But today I hang up with the idea of having a nice battery indicator with percentage, then I found out UOT Kitchen and made myself a fine percentage btry indicator and installed it decently. And it worked, I've been very glad that both of my demands has been fullfilled...Till I perceived that after this battery update, the extenden power manu has gone, actually whole power menu has gone (when try to call power menu by pressing the power button, nothing happens, just giving a warning which I cant remember at the moment)! So, I installed again ext. pwr. menu update, and now percentage btry ind. has gone (naturally). I think these two updates are based on framework-res system and when trying to have installed both, something crashes. Well, now I'm looking for a way to cook these two (even a boot animation too) updates in one stable package. Any idea or suggest will be muchly appreciated.

If the framework-res.apk is pulled from your /system/framework (after extended power menu patch is applied) for UOT..you should not have problems.

I managed that (combining Ext.Pwr with % btry) on a different way, thanks. Now I need a formula to cook a new boot animation into this new update. UOT Kitchen hasn't such an option (adding a new boot animation for Ace).
Many people have been asking for this, so here it is. Thanks to "tbriden" for his info on this mod. As with many of my mods, This is currently for deodex'ed roms.
This also contains my Advanced power menu
Advanced Power Menu + Volume Buttons To Wake
Just Flash From Recovery
This mod will remove any of Runandhide's Mods, but I've already passed the necessary edits off to him, and he'll be updating his mod shortly
His mod can be downloaded RunandHides Mod
FROM RUNANDHIDES OP ABOUT THIS MOD
NEW!! for Viper 1.2.1 longpress home =menu, recent app = menu, volume up/down = wake device, half press camera button = search/voice search and includes Vinchenzop's APM
I've been trying to integrate these mods and even using them as standalone and my phone seems to be kind of retarded when it comes to them.
For instance, the advanced power menu mod doesn't work on my phone. Modding it myself or using your mod produces the same result: Holding down the power button to bring up the menu results in a soft-reset back to boot animation, every single time. Wiping either dalvik or cache has no effect. Even hard resetting has no effect. I'm hoping that it's because I've removed so many files in my attempts at a "Senseless" ROM that one of them may be reliant on this mod, and not my phone just being a strange lemon of sorts. Even the modding of framework-res took a LOT of work on my part because every single one of runandhide05's mods to it resulted in bootloops.
WTF?

Use my framework-res.apk. The reason you're getting a soft reset is because its lookin for icons/layouts that aren't there. And before you notice...yes the files are improperly labeled, but that was just my quick way to get it to show right in the menu
Thanks for this. Coming from the 3D I developed a habit to wake with volume button. Now my habit can continue.

Wait wait wait......so the APM relies on the framework-res.apk? How interesting! that would make sense as to why it does soft-reset on me, as I didn't even try using another one. Every framework-res I've used just boot loops on me. I had to go through some pretty terrible crap to get a framework-res mod. runandhide05's removed the signatures, which is probably the first reason why mine would bootloop, so I added that back in and it still bootlooped. So then I took a stock framework-res and copied the resources.arsc over and that worked, BUT the notification bar became double the size. Every single technique I knew to decompile and recompile resulted in boot loops. I finally got it working with mine&runandhide05's mods, but the file I produced is closer to the stock in file size: 18MB vs 13MB (runandhide05s).
I will give your framework-res a shot and if it works, you'll have to let me know what you're using to decompile/recompile.

Its a f'in headache man, I do all my android modding on linux...but since ICS, I've got to decompile apks on my windows machine (which i am unfamiliar with) and then move them back to my linux machine for any smali edits.
I followed fernando sor's tutorial, to an extent to get a damn framework-res to compile.
Edit: You won't be able to decompile then recompile though...pm me your gmail
Thanx allot for the mod! are there other options in the works like using the camera button to ? That was my favorite because I like the volume buttons used for the "select track while screen off" mod.
Good work and thanx for the contribution
Hey Vin,
Can you add menu remap and long press home to this mod please ... I tried Run's newest mod and it all works except the vol wake so I'm currently using his mod that has LPH, Menu Remap and your APM which works great but I really miss vol wake ... I don't much care about the half press camera but others might ... It not just me, I posted in Run's thread and vol wake being broken was confirmed
Fyi, in his mod the vol wake works but only if you hit a vol key quickly after turning the screen off with pwr button and is repeatable ... If u wait more than 30 secs or so then a vol key will no longer wake the phone and u have to use the pwr button which pretty much renders the vol wake useless ... don't know if that info will help but wanted to fully explain
Thanks !

The camera/wake is just a .kl (key layout) edit, and I don't think that's be the reason for the delay/issues. But yea, I'll leave it out for the time being.
But if you follow the ROM thread, you'll know that I won't be home/at my computer for 9 more hours or so...I say this so you're not wasting your time F5'ing this thread

apologies, I said it in a PM to someone, but forgot to reiterate it here. I remade the mod, and it had the same results (delays and/or not working). I'll have to add each aspect one at a time and see what is causing it. This could take a bit (should be this weekend).
Why do you guys prefer the volume rocker to wake? Just curious as to how this benifits. I think its a negative when listening to music and the screen comes on when adjusting volume, no?

Easier one handed operation b/c you can reach it with ur thumb when you take it out of ur pocket without adjusting ur grip. This is just quicker, handier and reduces the chance of dropping the phone with less adjusting in ur hand. Also the same reason I put status bar expander on my homescreen since I can't reach the pull down with my thumb in one handed operation without adjusting my grip

This really should go in development but the post count thing is nixing that.
My evo 4g lte is htcdev rooted, and I have twrp 2.1.8 installed as recovery.
Had queued zips to install viperrom elite 1.2 and 1.2.1, the progress bar is churning along, but the console hasn't moved on from "setting permissions", and is still on file 1 of 2, yet it's been a good 25 minutes... I get the feeling something's wrong, but without the ability to battery pull, I don't really know what to do.
The phone is not frozen btw, clock keeps updating, hitting power button brings up lock slider etc, just don't know how to cancel the install because it seems like it's taking a crazy amount of time.
Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT
Sigh nvm, looks like this was premature, apparently the problem was with queuing the zips as I suspected.
Also, apparently, the force reset involves holding down power button until buttons start flashing then simultaneously holding down the camera button for a bit as well. At least that seems to work for me.
I've only just started using the phone. Have some Qs.
1. Other than the aural indication for an incoming email/text message, is it also possible to have the screen light up?
2. What is the best way to:
a. Wake the phone - use of the Power button or Home button?
b. Return to home screen w/out use of the Home button.
3. Is it normal for a full charge from 2-5% to take anywhere between 3-3.5 hrs?
4. Is NoLED the more popular free notifications app, or is there anything better available from the market.
5. Do you guys advise on selecting System power saving? What is the optimum selection for the Touch key light duration?
Any other battery-saving tips would be appreciated.
6. Lastly, are all of you currently running 4.0.3?
Thanks
1) You can use No LED, or Siyah/BLN. Up to you. Either way there's a cost so far as battery drain is concerned if you use either of these.
2) Makes no difference. Use whatever button you like. I'm not aware of any other way to return to your home screen. That's why there's a home button (logical, no ?).
3) Yes.
4) No LED seems to be the most popular notification app that mimics BLN. Why not search Google Play & see if there are others ? (I'd be surprised if there isn't).
5) No idea. There are no shortcuts to saving battery/getting the most out of every charge. It takes research, reading & learning. There is no "Do such & such & get such and such battery life". Every phone is setup & used differently, it's a case of experimenting & finding out what works for you. There is a wealth of info on this stuff on here, you just have to search for it (Use Google with XDA appended to your search terms rather than XDA search), read, learn & try stuff out.
6) No. I'm running CM9. But please don't turn this thread into a 'recommend me a rom' thread. Mods will close it post haste if you do. Try a bunch of roms/kernels out until you find a combo that works well for you. This is very simple if you use CWM to backup/flash/restore (takes all of a few minutes to backup your current setup, flash a rom & then restore it if you find you don't like a rom/kernel).
Edit - You haven't read the Stickies, have you ? I highly recommend you do. There is an treasure trove of information in those threads.
1. Other than the aural indication for an incoming email/text message, is it also possible to have the screen light up?
A) u can search play store r google for the same
2. What is the best way to:
a. Wake the phone - use of the Power button or Home button?
A) both way its ok r even the vol keys
b. Return to home screen w/out use of the Home button.
A) simply scroll back to home screen
3. Is it normal for a full charge from 2-5% to take anywhere between 3-3.5 hrs?
A) yes its quite normal
4. Is NoLED the more popular free notifications app, or is there anything better available from the market.
A) u can try NSTools app from play stores
5. Do you guys advise on selecting System power saving? What is the optimum selection for the Touch key light duration?
Any other battery-saving tips would be appreciated.
A) touch key light duration of 1.5 secs is good and also disable all auto sync ,wifi and data when not in use, brightness to Auto etc will help saving battery
6. Lastly, are all of you currently running 4.0.3?
A) no i am running 4.0.4

Here are some answers:
1. Yes, there are different methods of visually showing an incoming sms or email. Some message/email apps support some kind of "light", or just flash a custom kernel with Back Light Notifcation (BLN), such as SiyahKernel. Has to be enabled and configured with ExTweaks app.
2.a. Wake up from screensaver/screen off by pushing the Home button.
2.b. Return to home screen by pushing the Home button or the Home "link" on the left at the bottom if you are in the apps menu.
3. Yes. Charging will be faster if the phone is turned off, but it will still take about 3-3,5 hours for fully charging.
4. Notification app ... as I am using the stock message and email apps, no suggestion from me.
5. Have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16973603. Very good battery saving tips. And I am not using custom power saving.
6. No, not all. Have a look at my kernel/ROM tests => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26775950, and make up your own mind. I am very satisfied with my current ICS ROM XWLPD and won't go back to GB. BTW, with some custom ROMs, you can install Android 4.0.4 on the SGS2, but I haven't checked this, as I prefer stock/Sammy ROMs.
@MistahBungle, Sun90, It_ler, thanks for getting back, & for the links!
I am running stock everything and do not plan on rooting/installing a custom ROM. That said, is it still possible to get the latest 4.0.4 update?
Is Kies the way to go, to get an update?
The only reason I ask about the Home button is that with continuous use over time, it just might not be as effective.
Each time there is new email/text message, I was wondering if there was a way for the screen to light up, indicating the type of message (email/text message); not the NoLED icons.
No, it's not possible to get a '4.0.4 update' with a stock rom. There might be an app that lights up the whole screen (why you'd want to do that I have absolutely no idea) rather than an 'icon' on the screen like No LED. As suggested, search Google Play yourself & see if such a thing exists.
