In trying to optimize my CM7, RC4 setup, I realized that changing the LCD density from 161 to 160 allowed a game that I never got to work before to run perfectly...The game is "fruit slice"...Now I wonder how important this may be with multitudes of games and apks? Anyone else notice this on other apps?? If you've figured one out, or a complete workaround that cures this scaling issue, please offer any insights you might have.I'd rather not have to make folders of certain apps that only work at so-and-so density..but..

Haven't checked yet..
Will do...ps…for ^that other? ...density can be changed thru either nook utils app found here on forum...thru apk from beansoft, thru root explorer (change build.prop under/system, or with adb..)

I've been using 140 pretty much exclusively. I don't like the Fisher Price look of the big huge icons you get with 200 that so many here are fond of.
I set mine at 210. The only app that doesn't scale correctly is Google Reader.

Good to know, thanks.
After changing to 160 i get a black screen on boot but i fixed it. Does this work on honeycomb?
For those asking how to change it, there is an app in the market (although I've never used it), or you can use Root Explorer to edit the build.prop file in your system folder. Just scroll down until you see something about LCD Density (sorry, don't have my Nook in front of me) with a 161 after it, change that number to one of the numbers listed in this thread. I use 140, some use much higher numbers. You'll have to reboot for the change to take effect.

Funny how that is. I just tried Fruit Slice at 210, 161 & 160. 160 was the only one that worked.
I would suggest Fruit Ninja for 210, but it's a paid app. I bought it a long time ago, and it works great at 210. It was the free app of the day on on the Amazon Appstore the other day, and I have seen the free apps repeat.
...or you could just go with 160.
I have fruit ninja too...I was just wondering if there was some magic cure-all for all apps when used on the nook, or was the reason perhaps just lazy coding by certain app devs.

Sorry. I meant fully working video hardware decoding...does Froyo run things like youtube in HD at full framerate...does 10.2 work well with all the streaming apks like in CM7?..I've never used froyo on the nook, since gb does everything I ask it too..HC was way too flaky and buggy without MAJOR tweaking.

Ahh i dont know about that. I only use Froyo for N64oid and im never really watch youtube videos so youd have to ask someone else about that. I didnt know they had gb for Nook...ill have to check that out. HC from here works fine:

Hey,
my gf just got an Ace and as the resolution makes stuff way to large one of the first things we (read I) did was change the dpi from 160 to 140.
Surprisingly this resulted in the dialer app crashing whenever trying to make a call. It's not just the dialpad (DialerTabActivity.apk), although that crashs as well, but also the real dialer (Phone.apk) that just fails.
Anyone got the same behaviour? Any ideas on how to solve it? I haven't experienced such an issue on any other phone. Using 2.3.4 XXKPH firmware.
Same problem
There is a similar post somewhere here. Yes the dailer crashes and when we googled some say using alternative dailers like dailer one etc works. Im currently using Villian rom 2.3.3 and i tried almost all the dailers out there. IT DOES NOT WORK lol Does anyone know a work around to this problem cause for me so far its only the phone apk that crashes
both the dialer (visual interface with number buttons) as well as the phone.apk (the thing in background handling the calls) crash with changed dpi :-( first is easy to replace, second isn't

I changed the dpi on my rom to 240 > 200 > 180 > original and it didn't crashed, everything was working fine.

The answer most likely is that the Samsung Galaxy i777 is so new right now
that when developers create the code to their apps most likely are required to
enter or add into their app coding and or database the exact phone names
and models to which they are compatible with before the market allows the
people to download it...........
Just a way to keep the market safer and from getting thousands of complaints
damm , and I wanted to try that wifikill app. Hopefully the creator has a direct link in his thread on xda.
Someone said in that app thread that its because I may have changed my dpi settings, and I did in the build.prop file but I changed it back and I'm still getting the error so I think Misterjunky is correct.

What would the pixel density have to do with any of that? That absolutely is not true as I have the ATT version of the phone and my room mate has the Epic 4G Touch version of this phone. Both are rooted and his is still stock ROM mine is listed below in my signature. My Pix density is 200 and his is stock 240. Both of our markets show as having not compatible apps for our phones such as Adobe Flash and Netflix...Yet We both have the apps on our phones just older versions. When you search them out they are there and claim to have updates but will not let you install. I flashed the UnNamed 1.0.3 ROM to my phone just a few days ago I did a wipe and reset of the phone, after rebooting and customizing (including changing the build.prop file for density) for a short period of time I was able to search out and update Adobe Flash to version 11 and the latest version of Netflix. I go back after a few hours and restoring from TIBU and noticed one of my apps "Make your clock" was the old version I had in my backups that I must have restored over the newer version downloaded earlier in the day from the market updates. I went to update the app and I was not able to do it, now it is not compatible with my phone. I thought at first it was just paid type apps that were doing this and then I investigated and noticed the Flash and Netflix apps were in the list. That threw out any type of security issues that may be trying to be implemented on paid apps now. But is may be something to do with files or sizes related to TIBU and restoring files from backups.
I can confirm that some of the apps in the market will show as incompatible when you change your LCD density. This may not be the only reason, but I have seen this behavior on the Facebook, Skype and YouTube apps.
I just set my density back to 240, restarted, downloaded/updated, then changed back. It's sort of irritating, but until there's a way to override the compatibility check, i think we just live with this work around.

Well I just did the same exact thing you just described and can reconfirm it is still not working with apps installed on my phone. But have not ran into any issue with installing any new appsnot previously installed or restored. Have you or do you use TIBU to backup or restore apps or are you straight stock loading apps from the market directly?

Yeah, like I said. There might be more than one problem. This is just the one that worked for me.
Before I figured it out, I had been restoring (old versions) apps using Titanium without any issue. It's a shame that the market compatibility detection is not quite accurate and there's no way to tell the Market "no really, my phone is compatible."
Blockbreaker 3 HD on sale now! LINK
Full sale including other games: LINK
The Gameloft apps seem to require IMEI, build.prop and LCD to 160. If you don't have these, your mileage may vary...
Backstab HD was in sale 12/11/11 for the same price and prolly will be again. It also runs perfectly on the nook.
Asphalt 6HD was in sale a couple of times over the last week for the same price and prolly will be again. It also runs perfectly on the nook.

Still can't get this to work on my Nook Color.
I've edited my build.prop to the following:
ro.product.model=SPH-P100
ro.product.brand=bn
ro.product.name=encore
ro.product.device=encore
ro.product.board=encore
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
I've cleared out my market data multiple times and rebooted multiple times.
Neither Blockbreaker 3 HD nor Backstab HD show up in the Android Market on the Nook Color, and when I try to get it through android.market.com it tells me "This item is not compatible with your device."
Any other ideas?

The LCD density is already set to 160.
Indeed, I too made the same build.prop changes, verified that the dpi was set to 160 (my encore nightly was already set that way), cleared the cache and data for Market, and rebooted. I verified the build.prop changes after the reboot just in case I erred.
Blockbreaker 3 HD still does not show up on the market and shows as unavailable on market.android.com.
I'm running nightly "cm_encore_full-253.zip" and "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip". Any other suggestions would be welcome, Blockbreaker looks quite fun. Thanks.

I'm running 253 as well. The gapps version shouldn't affect anything. The only thing left I can think of is IMEI editing, sorry. Gameloft always finds a way to make installing a game 20x harder than it needs to be.
Understood, thanks. I take it then that lack of a real IMEI can cause apps to show as unavailable on the market? (I had only previously run into IMEI problems with already installed apps, like an old version of Touchdown. They didn't work right but they showed up in the market and installed, IIRC.)

I wouldn't have thought so but Gameloft games have a history of having buggy DRM that does everything but a credit check before allowing you to play your game. The exciting news is that with IMEI editing (and everything else) these games are seeming to install and prevent me from needing to scour the darkened alleys of the internet looking for hacked .apks.

Hrm when i go to the site it says not available on any of my devices.
Hi guys, request help from you who know how to reset google play apps so i can update all my apps
Usually my updated apps is 172, but now it is only 95
but when I do factory reset, wipe cache & wipe dalvik cache, flash rom and change dpi, the total apps change to 172 again, but after a few days it becomes 95 again?
Is it because I change the dpi of the phone? Is there any way to fix that or apps that can fix that?
Sent from my GT-I9100
definitely... stay on your default dpi, some apps detects yours device resolutions before it will download data ... for example: g*meloft games..., dont bother factory reset just do this: setting - apps - manage - all - search google play - force stop - clear data, hope it helps..

Perhaps you can use a modified play store apk. Just search for it in the Forum.
playing with dpi is such a trial and error... some apps run.. some wont (especially games afaik), if you could tweak some setting in build.prop.. make it galaxy note, change the dpi be like galaxy note... it would be galaxy note, some apps would be fooled some wont... its not recommended thought.. but hey its a trial and error
