[Q] Killing tasks by pressing HW keys - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Can you help me with a problem?
When I want to kill an application on my Desire, I must go to the app drawer and find the Task killer. And then, find the app that I want to kill, press and wait for the options and finally kill that app. It's annoying, because it takes a lot of time... (sorry, but for me 5 sec IS a lot ) Please don't tell me to just avoid killing tasks.
I got an idea if it is possible to kill a tasks just by pressing HW keys or a combination of HW keys. For example: By pressing 3x HOME I'll kill the application I'm just using. That should save a lot of time (that 5 sec).
So my question: Is there a way to assign own actions to HW keys? By remapping or something like that?
Thanks a lot.

In MIUI (and I think CM7) there's an option to long-press the back button to kill the current task.
If you're not interested in using either of those roms, I believe there's an app that will do the same. There's also an app that will allow you to close the current app from the notification bar.
Those apps may require root, and I don't know the names of them. Just search the Market, you may find them.

[Q] Search Button Customisation

Is there any way to set "recent app" of long press home key to the search button
I tried but cant find any option for it....using mik_os CM7 rom
Also tried some third party apps for multitasking but they keeps refreshing the background app resulting in fresh start of those apps instead of resuming them
Try "smartbar"
I have always used smartbar and IMO, it has lots of useful stuff in it. Right now, I have "quick settings"(brings up a pop up menu to toggle wifi/gps/BT/etc) assigned to my "serch key's" long press, but I can also change it to "recent apps"(not the default one though)(won't work on opera mini though, will bring up the search bar instead).

Sorry, but why would you use search button for recent apps when longpress home button works perfect no matter where in the menu/apps you are.
Really thanx for smartbar...its working awesome
@22VIN
it can be used for better multitasking

I checked the appbrain website for the app. It says:
*DOESN'T WORK WELL ON FROYO
So, is it true or Optimus One is good enough a phone to ignore the above warning?
Cm7 is gingerbread rom....havent tried it on froyo

Is there an app to navigate between apps recently opened

Hi, so a long press on 'home' brings the last 6 apps used. It's so basic it's sad. Is there a way to replace this with a better task switcher? Yes I know how Android manages RAM. I do not want a task killer, but a task switcher that replaces the existing one.
Does that exist? Thank you!
Tried searching the Market?
Task Manager ?
Ok obviously this is frustrating, I think my question has merit and I get the rolling eyes smileys.
Yes I have searched the market. From the ones I tried (must have tried 5 or 6 of them) *not one* of these apps replaces the 'hold home for 2 seconds' behaviour. Not one.
Further more, a lot of them *do not work* on the SGS2. Perfect task switcher fails to render the screenshots for example, other freeze, other are plain broken - displaying all running processes including 'android system'.
What I'm looking for is something that replaces the 2 sec long press and display the most recent used apps.
Maybe try quickdesk.

LauncherPro has such a feature. You can set one of the dock buttons to "recent apps" and it'll fill your entire screen with your recent apps, not just 6.

[Q] How to customize tap and hold search menu?

When I tap and hold the search button it displays a list of applications that can be quickly accessed anytime. Is there a way to change (add, delete, reorder) that list?
Are there any apps that provide the same function?
Thanks.

I suppose tasker would probably allow you to do this.
EDIT: just created a profile for this using tasker, so yes, it can be done.
EDIT 2: if you're on cm7 you can also use Simifolder to set up a folder with the apps you want and then use the 'Input' setting 'Search button behavior' to set the search button to execute it on long press.

Mods wanted for home button

I won't be using S Voice a whole lot, and would rather repurpose my home key double click to something useful - such as recent apps/multitasking (as this would be much faster than holding home down). Is there a mod for this?
Also, I'd like to double click home to wake phone and unlock screen - any mods for this?
I'm on Omega v6.0, just flashed it.
Also, I'd like to do something about the wake-up delay. When pressing power or home to wake the screen up, there's a wait of a good half a second - I want it instantaneous, like my old phone was.
Any ideas?
Bump.
Afaik this delay is caused by waking up from deep sleep. There isnt much you can do, unless you want to force your phone to stay awake it will drain the battery quickly, though.
Try apex or nova launcher..
For multitasking try "wave launcher".not an ordinary launcher, check market
Editr try gesture launcher
Edit 2: or dock4droid also cool 4 multitasking

Bump for this.
I'd really like to be able to open the multitasking menu, with a single press of the home button.
Home2 shortcut in the market is.pretty useful.for key shortcuts like double click home or double click search key. Check it out

Home2 Shortcut seems like it should work (if and only if S Voice is disabled). If you have Nova Launcher installed, task switching is one of the shortcuts Nova has (so within Home2 Shortcut when you choose the app you'd like to be run, choose "Shortcut->Nova->Task Switcher"). If you don't use Nova as your normal launcher, I might be concerned about whether this causes Nova to be loaded into memory--this is a very simple test, but I can't do it because Nova is my launcher so it's already in memory.
The above technique has two disadvantages: you lose the ability to press "home" when you're already at the launcher (it does nothing), and there's an added delay before opening the launcher. I mitigate this delay by setting the double-tap time to a fast setting.
Another idea I had that might work:
- Uninstall S Voice (I think you can also rename the .apk to .apkbackup).
- Install a task-switching app (there's a very simple one on the market but it's not free--it just triggers normal Android task switching)
- Decompile the task-switching app
- Change the app namespace to S Voice's namespace
- Recompile and install the modified app.
This might make double-home-tap automatically trigger task switching without the disadvantages that come with using Home2 Shortcut. Unfortunately, I haven't yet decompiled/recompiled an app, so I probably can't give this a try until the weekend.
Edit: If technique 2 works and we want to share it as a mod, our only choice is to rewrite the app. There's no way we can condone pirating somebody's paid app.

Multitask Shortcut. Perhaps there are other apps that do this, but I haven't looked.
But it's still at least 2 button press. I'm lazy, so I'll continue with "wave launcher" that's just a swipe over screen and all your selected apps appear.

I found a way to swipe into multitasking, so I won't bother with the Home button:

Remap App Switch To Menu

So ive been search around for a while now on how to fix this. And to anyone that chimes in and says why do you need the menu button obviously you don't use older apps, the new touch button on the screen is a huge annoyance especially since i've used my phones this way since my first S1. Regardless this is how i want it and so do many other people.
Currently this is only for a rooted phone
I have figured out how to remap the left soft key from the App Switcher/Multi window over to the old style menu key. Instructions for that can be found here
But now i don't have any way of switching to my currently open apps, after remapping the left key, the longpress now takes you to search. and long pressing on the home button also takes you to another variation of the search (both i dont use nor want). I want to be able to remap my left softkey on longpress to open up currently open apps (APP_SWITCH) and it would be nice if long pressing on Home could open the Task Manager as it did on my S3.
As far as i can tell editing of the longpress function is done via a Policy edit. Read about that HERE
Keep in mind that post is from 2014 so i have no idea if the internal code is still being handled the same way, i couldn't even find that file on my S6, but i did find a file called SEPOLICY in my root folder using ROOT EXPLORER. Do any of you know more about this and how I can go about changing this? im sure its a code level adjustment. Thanks
Long-press home button can be controlled without root easily.
Check out this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spada.nowgesturetweaksfree
I use the long-press home to get to my last used app.
I wonder if I can remap my buttons to launch any other apps.. Will have to tinker around a bit.

very useful. menu for navigation is long long outdate. software nave or 3 dots is the customary way to go. adding a secondary menu button is redudant and unnecessary. my little ewww comment brought a lot to the table. you tryingt to call me out on it is less useful.

lol f off
If you guys use Dropbox, how do you get to the menu with SORT, etc.. without a menu key. This is making me crazy. I'm using nova launcher and there is no floating menu key. ????
The problem is if not every developer uses it, it's inconsistent.
It often helps if the options etc. In apps are on the top, so you don't have to fidget with your phone to reach the top or use two hands.
The menu button on every app is positioned somewhere else, so I find the op wanting it justified.
All in one gestures let's you remap every key, for some odd reason on my s4 I can remap the menu key, but on the S6 for some odd reason the option of the menu key has vanished in the same app:what:

Hi pal. Hope it helps. Make 254 button remap, then install nova launcher, in tab gestures select long press menu and then recent app. Profit! Now once tapped you have menu button, long pressed - recent apps.
So, i made it, i use it. It works.
