Here is my situation. I am on vacation and I am using 3g with my laptop to access the internet and ad-hoc wifi to connect the G-Tab. Me wife has a 7" black Pandigitial Novel (android 1.5, rooted and set so Market thinks it is 1.6) and it does not support ad-hoc wifi. She has a crossword puzzle app (Shortyz) that she can not update with new puzzles. I have downloaded the app and the new puzzles. Now, how do I get it to her device? I thought I could move it (only the new data part) to the external SD card and then pull it and put it in her device and she could move it from there. Then I realized that App2SD only moves to the internal SD card. So, now I'm stuck as what to do. Is there an app that will allow me to move data to an external SD card or some type of work around? Could I download it to the laptop and then put it on the SD card? Thanks
If you already have Shortyz installed on your gTab, its crosswords, updates and WIP files should be in /mnt/sdcard/crosswords/.
If your wife also has the app installed, then you can just copy the contents of that directory to the (same?) directory on the Pandigital.
If you also have to update her app, then you'll have to copy your apk file and overwrite her version on the Pandigital.
All this is slighty tricky if you don't know the app locations--on the tablet/moved to SD card/USB storage--on both your and your wife's tablets. Try this command as a starting point for sniffing out the locations (on both tablets):
Code:
gTablet$ [B]su[/B]
gTablet# [B]find /data -name *totsp*[/B]
I assume I can use Terminal Emulater to do the sniffing on the G-Tab. Is the transfer done via USB between the two tablets or do I have to use me laptop? You will probably have to walk me through this if it is okay with you, I have only been activily working with android for about two months. Thanks
UPDATE: Using a app "Sniffer" I found the different puzzles that was downloaded for Shorthand on the G-Tab but I do not have "Sniffer" on my wife's or Terminial Emulator. I do have a couple of file managers if they could be of use. Also, how will I overwrite the data that is already there(on the Pandigital)?
I may have over-complicated your reply. I do not have to update my wife's Sportyz, I only need to update the puzzles. How would I do this between devices. Both devices have DropBox but, I have only used it to install apk files I have downloaded to my pc and Thanks put in the DropBox. Thanks

Then it's very simple (if, potentially, a bit tedious). Copy the entire tree (all files and directories) from /mnt/sdcard/crosswords on your gTablet to your wife's crosswords directory--after you locate where that dir. is on the Pandigital.
How you make the copy is up to you. Zipping up the whole directory on your gTablet, sending the file to your wife and unzipping it in the proper place on the Pandigital will be the easiest. If you can't zip things up for any reason, you'll have to transfer each file individually after creating the correct directories. You can use Dropbox, email, ftp, SD cards, USB sticks, ... to transfer the file(s). You mentioned that the Pandigital didn't support ad-hoc WiFi. If you're near any kind of public access point, use that to get networking going on both devices then.
Use your imagination. At least one of you likes solving puzzles. Think of this problem as one. Best of luck.
Thank you, While waiting for your response I did exactly as you have suggested. I zipped the directory and put it on my SD2, then put it in my wife's tab and unzipped it to the proper directory.

I've had my g-Tab all of a week. I got it through Circuit City. The "application crashes" I learned are called "Force Close." Through the forum I found the solutions. I'd learned I needed the updated ROM and wanted Honeycomb. So this ROM seemed the best. I like the ROM as I've used it most of the day. I agree with the comment about soft keys because in the dark it's hard to see the keys on the bezel. The bugs I encounter are frustrating but, I've found solutions here in the forum. I'm new to Android on so many levels. This is my first Android device. So now I'm stuck.
All I wanted to do was transfer the files I have on my HTC Touchpro to my Tab. (For the 3rd Time.)(I've been through Stock ROM's and Mods several times over.) In reading I know I can't set an Adhoc WiFi tether. I also know I need the right App to transfer a file from the PC to the Tab via bluetooth or something.
So now I tried the USB file transfer. Of course it went into Debug mode. I tried some of the solutions for getting transfer mode operating but, that wasn't successful. I figured the SDCardFix solves this problem. So Tjohnsonjr says to push the file into the system/etc. folder. How would this be done?
You mean copy onto an SDcard Ext from the PC and then mount onto the gTab?
For some reason I can't even get my card to be read by the PC (I formatted it using the G-Tab command. Now when I put in my PC the explore window hangs.)
Use a bluetooth transfer? All I get is my Tab trying to use my PC as a headset. I can push a file from the Tab to the PC but, I' haven't figured the reverse.
BTW I thought I might have "bricked" the tab twice. I used CWMod to wipe cache, data, system and set the new partition. Since all of the files were on the internal SDcard the partition wiped the update.zip and command files. The reboot eventually started functioning and it pulled up "something...dirty....3388"
So obviously somewhere in the system there is still an OM android system ROM. (I think I'd like to hang onto that.)
BTW: the error reads:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
Well I hope tjohnsonjr gets this. He's put a lot of work into this ROM. But since the xda-developers won't let me post into the Developer's forum he probably won't. (Too much of a noob).
PS I know some have critiqued the gTab because of it's size. Well for a man who can't see too well that's great. The biggest problem I have with my HTC Touchpro right now is the screen is too small to read the fine print without reading glasses. If I ever figure out how to get the wifi tether working between these two devices. I'd have the perfect solution to several of my problems.
UPdate.zip=SDcardFix.zip
I changed the file name to see if that would make a difference. I was desperate.
try going back to stock rom and then installing. I had a similar problem, and I used nvFlash to go back to stock, then reinstall cwm and repartitioned, cleared data/cache etc.
Installed after doing all that and it worked like a charm.
[Q] [ROM-AOSP]G-Harmony Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Honeycomb elements(UPDATED 4/17)
TJ posted an update to his ROM. The fix to the USB works by renaming the EMMC to the external SDcard per the posts seen on this website. So if you backed up apps and data to the ext SDcard it is now listed under the emmc directory. The SDcard is the internal memory. Not sure how that's going to work when pushing apps and data to the external card. (See forum posts discussing this workaround for the situation for all ROM's.) The USB connection now works for transferring files onto the GTab. Use a file manager for pushing from internal memory to the external SDCard.
The Adhoc Wifi connection seems to work. Meaning I got my cellphone and gTab to connect to one another however, I was unable to get the gTab to connect to the internet via the cellphone. (I'm using an HTC Touchpro on Sprint. I've never gotten the wifi hotspot to function properly but, I'm experimenting with WMWIFIRouter.)
Thanks to TJ for all of the hardwork on this ROM.
As far as I can tell dropbox for android doesnt make a mount point like it does on a PC, but the function is there. Could android be tricked into doing this?
Hello, i a, looking for for something like this aswell. The only posibility i know is dropsync, but this mirrors the dropbox to the local storage... It would be great to be able to Mount the dropbox like a network drive
Es file Explorer can add your dropbox folder as a share in its app. Actually it supports GDrive and Box too...

Yes but the share in not available to other apps as if it were mounted as another external SD drive. I want to use an encryption software but I need to point it to the encrypted file. For that the dropbox folder needs to look like an android system folder.

I have been looking for something similar. so far, (apart from apps like es file explorer) the closest i have found is [puts on protective suit] this
https ://github.com/arekzb/dropfuse
now - yes, I know that it is linux and not android, but given the similiarities in the systems (ducks flaming posts), it may server as a planning base for a (much smarter/more knowledgeable) person to expand upon.
My thoughts (possibly invalid) would be that the mount point could be created at/after(?) boot via some sort of script - not sure if this is even possible, but if it could be done, you could then potentially modify for other storage services.
Purpose's could be to - stream media, store files for online viewing/editing/reading etc...
******
update - just tested and have not got it working on my ubuntu system - possibly due to a backend dropbox change (or just me not being able to follow instructions)
*******
okay - so tried again and it works (for ubuntu) - help read instructions and google - works wonders
needed to install setuptools and pyquery, and it only works while the terminal window is open (there may be a way to run as a service or something - but not checked yet).
so all good - so far.
Did some checking and there is python for Android around, so am thinking (once i get a chance) I will try to see if i can emulate the linux success.....
Great for Ubuntu, any chance for Android
Hi people, I have looked around and haven't found anything to do with adb not letting any editing to the extSdCard whatsoever (without root)
I want to be able to use
Code:
adb push "C:\whatever.txt" /storage/extSdCard/
and actually work. everytime I do this it gives me:
Code:
failed to copy 'C:\whatever.txt /storage/extSdCard/whatever.txt': Permission denied
I have not got superuser privileges and made this thread for those who do not have it. PLEASE do NOT post anything to do with busybox or su, your efforts will be in vain.
Thanks in advance
for those coming here as reference, this is probably due to the changes to file permissions in KitKat

No, it's not. The Kit Kat SD card deal is only for 3rd party apps on the phone for writing to the SD card. http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes . Has nothing to do with adb.
There are tons of people through the past few years that have this "trouble" for various phones and many versions of android. Often times it does just not work. Are you certain that the external is at /storage/extSDcard? Sometimes you have to do this as well:
adb push somefile.zip /storage/extSDcard/somefile.zip
What phone do you have? Why to the external and not internal and then just use a file manager to swap it over? Or use an external card reader. Or wifi file transfer.

my phone's details are in my signature.
I do push to the internal since i cant push to external. my external is called sdcard1 by the system. The reason for pushing to external is that it is 16GB compared to 8GB internal (5GB usuable)
Why can't you just transfer via MTP or wifi file transfer?

Never really had issues with MTP. I work on phones for a living and have owned many (see list in sig) and use 3 different PCs - Win XP, Win 7, and Win 8.1 and MTP works right 99% of time for me on - you name it - HTC, Samsung, Sony, LG, etc etc. Have rooted/modded/upgraded/fixed 100s of devices and pretty much all of them I have to use MTP these days. *shrug*
If you have the ability to wifi tether, you can tether to your device and send files that way too. It's as fast/reliable as your data connection at that point though. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where I have a good signal almost always and have unlimited data so this option works great for me too. Your results may vary.
i forgot to mention i am in a no signal zone. so wifi is not an option. i dont mean mtp does not work, but i feel it is sluggish and has flaws, while my script has none. do you want my script?
basically it is a drag and drop batch file, and if the dropped file is an apk, it installs it. if the file is a mp3, video etc it moves it to a corresponding folder, and if the extension is not recognised, it offers to move the file to downloads. only flaw it has is that it needs editing to work on a phone that names the internal sd something else, which can be changed with an easy find/replace
I have a B&N Tablet, 16GB (BNTV250). I downloaded cm10 and the relevant files to install cm10 onto my toy. The setup went reasonably well and after a couple of minor hiccups, it's running nicely.
It runs, I can downloads apps from the Playstore, I can go to the usual places on the web, and my bookmarks were successfully synced into Firefox from my desktop PC. I found a B&N (actual) charger and cable, so it charges quickly and well, at least faster than a plain old USB cable and a random charger.
So I thought that I could download some files just like I can on my PC (running Linux, by the way). Oh, so sadly mistaken. I go into Firefox, go to a known website from which I have downloaded files on my PC, try to download those same files to my Tablet - nothing except failure to download. So I go into Firefox to setup a download directory, just like I would on my PC. No place to configure that. I look in my Tablet, and permissions look O.K. on various directories, except for sdcard1 which is root only. So, I'm at a loss. Where's the magic decode ring for doing a simple download? I've looked - no clue. Help!

I may have found the solution - or at least a solution. I went into Terminal Emulator and changed permission on sdcard1 to "777". I tried another download through Firefox - it worked this time. That of course works, but why wouldn't there be usable permissions established from the git-go for the primary/owner user?
Also, after doing that, I created a subdirectory under /sdcard1/Download called Woodworking. It did not inherit the "777" permissions. Do I need to be in some group? If so, why isn't that established for the primary user (me) when I installed cm10?

That doesn't work - it's not persistent. I've installed CM10 a couple of times now. Same result, no downloads via the Firefox browser. I tried the same download with the standard browser and actually received an error message "An SD card is required to download (the requested).pdf". Now I'm really confused - why can't files be downloaded to my internal storage which has a lot of available space?
In case anyone has run into the same issue in Nougat, I have a solution FYI. I'm using an LG G5 and transferring SD card data to/from a Windows 7 machine, but my workaround should work for any Nougat phone and any version of windows.
Anyway, my issue was that Windows explorer was not showing an updated/synced list of files and folders present on my SD card. Windows sync with the phone's internal memory seemed fine. To solve it, I killed "Media Storage" through Settings - > General - > Apps-> Show System - > Media Storage - > Force Stop, and then REBOOT THE PHONE.
Seems the fix is only for an existing SD card file structure though. When I added a new folder with the phone still plugged in, I needed to kill media storage and reboot my phone again. A pain but at least it gets the job done.
Hope someone out there finds this info useful. Cheers!
Yes, for MTP it usually creates a non-synced state between PC and phone storage.
I really suffered a lot from this issue before.
If you want to access your phone's storage with better performance, you might want to switch other means like
1. adb pull/push(Droid Explorer is a great implementation on windows),
2. FTP server(ES explorer provides that feature), or
3. the traditional mass storage(tweaking init.rc script or usb definition files, I can't remember clearly, sorry).
@ReVanTis, thanks very much for your reply. Before I go any further, I should mention that my phone is not rooted. So the portions of what you mentioned where root is required are unfortunately not an option for me. I have combed the forums, and it seems that Canadian carriers (and in particular, my carrier Rogers) lock their phones such that rooting is not possible.
(So maybe off topic a bit, but if you have any info on how to root an LG G5 (Model H831) running Nougat 7.0, please pass along)
Just a few days ago, I did try to install the adb shell on my Win7 PC, but couldn't figure out how to get it working. I'm not a command line kinda guy, and it took some fiddling just to get the shell GUI to pop up. And even then, I could't do what I wanted to. In my case, I wanted to use adb to force adoptable storage onto my G5. Don't know why LG didn't implement that but whatever, slightly off topic again. And back on topic, no adb shell and no root means no Droid Explorer.
FTP: Seems like a better option. I stopped using ES File Explorer a few months ago because it became too invasive and distracting, am extremely happy with the ad-free and networking ready paid version ($1.29 or something ridiculously cheap) of FX File Explorer. I haven't used FTP in decades, I'll give it ago tomorrow and see if I remember how
Tweaking init.script or usb definition files... I'd say too labour intensive and not necessary if a simple FTP connection can work. On the PC end, is cuteFTP still around from like 20 years ago? lol
Cheers!
Anyone have issue where files from sd card are blank when bringing files over to windows? Will show main folder, but empty inside. But if I do internal files to pc, all is good. Probably windows because I've had this issue with other phones.

For 1. and 2. you don't actually need root access.
For 1, you can download platform-tools (https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html)
and install droid explorer(https://de.codeplex.com/).
It's basically a file explorer implemented by issuing adb commands.
I believe you don't need root access to use droid explorer unless you want to access where it is only allowed for root.
SD card and internal storage should be fine without root.
You only need to enable adb from phone settings then install the correct adb driver on you windows PC.
For 2, besides ES explorer I believe there are bunch of other apps can do this.
It should be easy to find a replacement.
And 3 is actually way far from being practically useful, I wrote it just to point out it should be possible to do so.
Cool! I'll give adb and Droid Explorer another go when I have some more time (work, kids etc. interfering with my tinkering time! lol) . I thought DE was only for rooted devices but as you say, may work if the space I need to work in is accessible without root.
And absolutely, there are tons of file explorer apps out there, I mentioned one in particular as it is far and away a personal favorite for my needs.
Thanks again and have a good night... and do please let me know if you figure out how to root the H831. You know, in your spare time while being really bored Cheers!
