I don't know if it's a kernel/rom problem, or a hardware controller that's at fault, but ever since I got this phone charging in car chargers, computer usb outlets, and even alternate wall chargers has been painstakingly slow!
It takes forever to charge, and takes a dedicated powerful wall outlet to even do anything.
Anyone else experiencing this?
The default Samsung Provided Wall outlet charger provides .7A of power, while USB provides .5A of power max. Also what percentage do you charge it at, and can you take a screenshot of your battery usage graph?
The 3rd party chargers that designed for iDevices are not recognized as AC chargers and will be charging at USB mode which is much shower.

So if I am understanding correctly we were limited to 660 mA at max and unless some way to change it is found, there is unfortunately no use from more powerful chargers .

Perhaps you have either a faulty battery or a faulty charger.

Put your phone in to power saving mode and see if it charges faster.
Other wise exchange it under warranty.
I've experienced that this devices charges significantly slower then my previous devices.
I found it odd when I saw the stock a/c USB adapter outputs at .7mA so i did a starch and found an article out there with a statement from Samsung stating that their devices are designed to charge slow because it's healthier for the battery.
I don't know if the charging current is restricted by some code in the kernel or a physical chip in the main board.

It is true that slow charges do increase the overall life of the battery. Also not charging it all the way or discharging it all the way will keep the life of the battery. If you discharge the phone all the way down, it will take much longer to charge than charging it back up from 20% or so.

Can you please post the output voltage and amperage for the battery charger on that accessory? Should be either on a sticker on the bottom of the device our written in fine print on the charger.
Also just to double check, it does not charge a docked device, just the spare battery?

Physical chip. However on other GS2s and original GalaxyS phones, the chip was fairly controllable by the kernel.
Ours isn't - it has three settings. 90, 400, 660 mA.

It is 600mA, and it just charges the spare battery.
I strongly advise against buying third party batteries or chargers. The Galaxy S 2 (AT&T version) uses a battery with NFC technology. Using anything other than an OEM Samsung battery, or an NFC compliant battery could cause damage to your device.

So I went on a 2 hour trip using my EVO as a gps. I had it plugged into the car charger the entire time. Little did I know the EVO was using the battery faster than it was charging. I've done this many times with the EVO 4G with no problems. Any suggestions? The phone is basically useless as a gps for any long distance trips. The battery will never last.

if your battery is low (below 50%) and your phone still won't charge faster than 500mah on the car charger, it will not keep up with GPS uses, be aware that as the battery approach full, it charges slower and slower, near 97~99% it will only charge @ about 100mah rate.
I bet you have a cheapy car charger that only supply 500 mAmp, get one that can supply 1000 to 2000 mAmp (1A to 2A... 2A usually for DUAL usb outlet type charger)

Mine wasn't charging unless it was plugged into the wall until I typed ##3828# and checked "enable USB charging". Now it charges while plugged into a computer or car as well.

So i enabled usb charging and when I go back into the ##3282# menu it it always reverts back. How do you get it to stick.

Also, I have a decent charger. It's one of the ones that has two ports on it. By the way I was only charging the EVO 3D I didn't have anything else connected.

Usually in that mode you have to click menu then hit commit modifications..

I've never had a problem using this older but more powerful iGo AutoPower 3000 car charger. Overstock has them for $6.50+shipping and you get a bunch of power tips with it but not a microUSB tip.

From my understanding, the tips have a resister in them which limits the mAmp output but I'm not sure what the a97 tip specs are since iGo doesn't seem to release that info. Hopefully it's 1A like the wall charger. I can verify that the newer single output iGo chargers are limited to .75A. So even if the tip is 1A, the charger is the limiting factor, hence why I recommend the older, more powerful one.

Read the label on the charger, make sure it say at least 1A or even better 2A
lots of cheapy dual USB on ebay that's not rated for 2A
if you got a 2A charger and current widget still show 500ma charge rate,
then you may have to figure out if your phone is charging in USB charge mode with the car charge (limit to 500ma by the phone per USB spec) or in AC charge mode (charge at up to 1A)

Ebay and Amazon have alot, just make sure they specificly say 1A for single USB or 2A for dual USB output.
for 2A dual USB, the OEM HTC thunderbolt one seem to be the best but also most pricey, some alternative are the Motorola dual usb and the Tmobile my touch 4g dual USB

Was having the same issue;
I used the car charger I had for my EVO, left it on for 3+ hrs, with little to no increase from where I put it on at. Ended up using a buddy of mine sharger and viola. Imex99 explained the reason for it. Just buy a new charger with 1A/2A output rating and you'll be good.
I'm having the same issues. I click enable usb charging and then commit, but it keeps reverting back to disabled with no difference in charging capability.
Speaking of car charging, why does the battery temperature vary so much between AC & USB, versus Car charging?
With the supplied HTC AC charger or USB connected to a computer, the battery's charging voltage is 4.333 volts and the temperature is 81*F.
With a Sprint Car Charger, the charging voltage is 4.333 volts but the temperature is 95.5*F

So I will get the regular charger for gs3 that comes with the phone (tomorrow when i get the phone). but i also have the HP Touchpad charger which gives output of 2.0A. I was wondering if I charge my phone with the HP charger will it actually charge is faster then the regular gs3 charger? the reason i ask is cause in other threads ppl have mentioned that it only charges faster with non - stock roms like aokp or aosp roms. please lemme know if this will work. thanks

I've used my BlackBerry PlayBook charger on mine and it doesn't charge any faster. That charger is 1.8amp.
It will not charge faster. The phone only draws as much amps as its allowed to. Whether you use a 1 amp charger or a 2 amp charger, it'll only charge at the phones own rate

A lot of chargers will be rated less than the stock charger. Especially cheap car chargers. In that case the phone can only draw at the charger rating.

The values listed on the charger is the max output it can provide. If the setting on the phone or the hardware is set up to only pull 1A, then it will always pull that unless that is more than what the charger can provide.
That being said, you should be able to take the battery out and charge it faster separate from the phone. I've always read, though, that charging a battery faster ( i.e. turning up the current) will/may reduce the life of the battery

the only way I have found to charge phone's faster is to power it off and then charge...takes about half the time to fully charge
none of the 2 amp chargers make it any quicker

I have a Touchpad charger and it can be used, though I noticed that the phone got hotter than normal, IMO. The phone comes with a 1.0A combo wall charger with USB cable. Interestingly the Samsung stand and battery charger that comes with the spare battery comes with a .7A charger but the charging unit itself is 500mA/1A on the input with output at only 4.2v @ 450/900mA.
Wondering if anyone has tried it? I remember reading that the wall charger from my Tab 10.1 was more powerful than for the phones because it would take FOREVER to charge. Wonder if it's compatible with our S3?

I believe that anything that charges on USB is just getting 5 vt, so any charger would work with any phone/tab if it is charging through USB. I would guess that the wall chargers are also putting out 5vt and would therefor be fine with any mini USB plug charging device.
Easy to check, plug it in and see how it works. (Buy insurance first )

It DOES charge faster, about an hour for a full charge from <8%
No problems I have noticed, and I am using blazer rom.

Any modern device will limit its own current draw to what is needed to do the job. While it is certainly possible for a charger to be underpowered resulting in slower charging it should not be possible for a charger to be overpowered. That is, there is some maximum charge speed the phone is capable of and that limit is expressed as its maximum mA draw. a charger that sources under the max mA will be slower than one that meets or exceeds it. A charger that exceeds the max mA will not charge any faster than any other charger that also exceeds the device's max mA regardless of the differences in their source capacity.
So, if that makes sense to you then you should know it ought to be safe to use a powerful charger and that if faster charging results then the stock charger is in fact underpowered for the device it was paired with.
Disclaimer: Any engineer worth his salt is going to current limit the charging circuit on the phone. However, if this were not the case then providing increased charging capacity will most certainly damage the device.

Basically youre saying the phone itself wont pull in anymore draw than it knows it can handle. So I guess if it does charge faster than great. Long as it dont fry im happy!
I would like to find a high output charger that is compatible with the Atrix. I know that some phones will limit the charging rate with unofficial chargers but I do not know about the Atrix. What rapid chargers have you had success with?

If you really want to charge your battery quickly, you will very likely need an external rapid charger (so you take the battery out, put it in the charger, then when it's charged put it back in the phone). However be aware that rapid charging usually comes with a price - by charging the battery quicker you shorten the overal lifespan of the battery.

I'm using LG OEM charger which output at 1A. much faster than Motorola OEM charger
im using a Nokia N900 which outputs at 1.2A its fater but i have to do a battery pull so it resets stats correctly

I use my TouchPad's charger putting out 2A, it works just fine. I use it for my bluetooth, phone, touchpad and kindle. I use it because it's convenient, one plug/wire for all devices.
A device will NOT charge any faster or get damaged by making more amps AVAILABLE at the source. A device will ONLY draw however many amps it needs, not more. This is the reason why you can replace a 100w bulbs with 60w or 13w CFL and not have them burn out. The voltage remains same, just draws less current (amps).
Like ravilov said, you'll needs something external. Even then I'm skeptical. The faster you charge a battery, the faster it will drain, at least with our type of battery.

One thing you might want to know is that the Touchpad's Charger is a different 5.3V, when compared to the standard 5V USB. Just something I thought you should know.
The Xperia Tablet Z is a notoriously slow charger and won't charge over USB (from what I've heard, I don't have mine yet). Does anyone know of a portable charger or power pack that'll work with it?
Ideally one available in Europe.

The Xperia Tablet Z is supplied with a charger that connects to its USB port; so, the XTZ will charge via its USB port.
If you attempt to charge the tablet via a computer's USB port, that port must be capable of supplying enough charging amperes, otherwise, the tablet will not charge. Standard USB 2.0 ports supply up to 500 mA and standard USB 3.0 ports supply up 900 mA, neither of which is truly enough amperes to charge the tablet. USB ports on computers that are specifically designed for charging devices usually supply 1500 mA (1.5 A) or more. Some manufacturers mark these types of USB ports with a lightening bolt symbol.
As for portable chargers, I have not used any except for chargers that fit in my automobile's power plug (cigarette lighter plug).

Any halfway recent (read: last 5 years) USB charger will work with it. Be it the one Sony supplies with the tablet, an iPad charger...or one for the Galaxy Note 2.
USB chargers are standardized, you need a "special" one nowadays about as much as you need a "special" socket for a device with a power plug.
The only difference is that we have weaker and stronger chargers, but this does not limit their usability. If you use a weak charger your device will charge slower, if you use a charger with an higher maximum power as your device needs it will expl nothing bad will happen either, it won't take more from the charger than it can handle.
Personally I bought (since I need the original 1.5A charger for the dock) a 2A Samsung charger for travelling. I think it is the same as the Galaxy Note 2 uses, which you already have.
Oh, and it charges with the 2A one over USB also around 30% faster than with Sonys 1.5A.

Maybe I'm not being clear.
Portable power supply. With a battery. One that puts out enough power to actually use the XTZ while it's charging, even if doing so only keeps the battery the same rather than actually charging it.
Can anyone recommend anything?
I know it uses a standard micro USB connector to charge but I've heard it won't charge from most PCs as they don't put out enough power. My understanding of many portable chargers is that they also don't put out a great deal of power unless specifically designed for laptops and the like. I don't know if the tablet's needs are quite that, but I'm looking for anyone who has experience using a battery pack with it and if anyone has any recommendations.
Or am I being silly and it'll work with anything capable of charging any tablet?

It should. The XTZs battery isn't exactly high capacity as tablets go. The Nexus 10 has a 50% bigger one and the iPad3/4 one is almost twice as large.
The principle of power packs is in the end identical as that of basic USB chargers, even a 500mA one will charge the XTZ, but it will take around 15 hours for that (and around 24+ hours to charge an iPad). It isn't a question of "working", but of "working how fast". But, as said, the XDZ hasn't exactly an huge battery, so if anything it will charge faster than other Tablets.
Assuming you do not use it, that is. It is quite possible to discharge it as fast a 3A/hour if you use maximum screen brightness and CPU intensive tasks. But you can discharge other Tablets faster than you can charge them as well.
So what to use - same principle as with USB chargers, pick any. It does not matter if its power comes from a power plug or batteries. If ti works for one USB device it will work for all. What matters is it's maximum A output. One with 2A should be able to charge the XTZ in 4.5 hours, one with 1.5A in 6 hours, and so on...

Yeah, I'm looking for something that charges the XTZ faster than (or as fast as) it discharges.

The Sony CPF2LS USB Portable Power Supply with 7000 mAh Battery charges at 1.5 amps so it should work for you. I'd post a link to Amazon, but, alas, I can't. It's around 63 bucks.

There is a slew of chargers that will charge it. You can use laptop USB, but like mentioned if you use it while charging it will drain
To solve this problem you simply need to have a portable charger that will put out at least 1.5amp(which is what the tablet charges at if im not mistaken).
So plenty are on amazon or ebay which you should have access to in europe
I use powergen ,they work well and is good quailty. Like either of these will workbigger mah will make the charger simply last longer)

Key thing is to simply look for the amerpage it puts out before you buy, that's how you know if it will charge and use the tablet at the same time. I can sucessfully do both using my car charger(2amp made for iphones) and my Powergen

The thing is this entirely depends how you use it. It is quite possible to use it in such a way that you would need a 3A charger to stop it from discharging. I do not think such one exists nor that the battery can accept such a charge.
So AFAIK a charger (be it a power plug or battery one) which stops it from discharging under all kinds of usage scenarios does not exist.
Therefore there is no answer to you "which charger I should use" question, only that the more A a charger puts out, the more usage scenarios will be covered (as in "will charge tablet while using it that way") by it.
Test how fast the Tablet discharges (without charging it) when you use it the way you plan to while using your charger. That will give you an indicator what kind of power you need. I.e. if it takes 12 hours even only a 0.5A charger will work, if it takes 2 hours you would need a 3A charger, which likely doesn't exists.
Im using an innergie charger that gives 2.1 amps and it charges a little faster than the 1.5a that came with it!

You know that that charger will only charge around 66% of the XTZs battery, though?
(Effective maximum capacity ~4A (see "attrition factor" explained in 2nd review), XTZs battery: 6A)
I am using my Samsung Note2 charger that states 2A.
Charges alot faster so for people with other chargers I should check samsung chargers haha.
