softbriked - HTC EVO 3D

hey guys i just soft brick my phone, it doesnt boot up after installing a kernel called singleneedle kernel, i was using viper rom. I have the phone unlocked but with s-on since i did it thru htc method. How can i restore my phone back to factory settings, i can get to recovery and fastboot.

I would wipe data, cache and dalvic then install a new ROM or try just wiping cache and dalvic then install viper again. This 2nd method might save all your data...

To flash a custom kernel.you have to do.it througj fastboot or it wont take boot into recovery through fastboot and then flash it normally like you would and it should work
Also.i could be wrongi think silver needle is only for. 2.3.3 are u runming 2.3.4?

thanks guys for all your help, i restore back to stock with the ruu files that was posted by JTningle on the development section. I reclock the phone and than flash the ruu files and than just unlocked it again and rooted the phone. I dont use fastboot to switch kernels I use an app that i found on the market called flash image GUI, since i dont have s-off this is the easiest way doing it.

Flash Image GUI is a great app, if I don't say so myself!
Unless you've switched to Sprint, your profile says Tmo. The silverneedle kernel by netarchy is only for the CDMA version of the EVO 3D, not GSM version.
Also, as mentioned above, I don't think silverneedle has been updated in a while and as such, might not be compatible with the latest software version of Android.
Appreciate the support of using my app, Flash Image GUI!
Glad to see you were able to resolve the issue via relock, RUU, unlock and root.

[Q] How do I remove TWRP Recovery from Evo 3D?

Hi,
I rooted my Evo 3D successfully and have TWRP Recovery. Now when I want to install a new update it takes me to recovery and says "Installation aborted" so I just want to remove TWRP and get the original recovery because I don't like this TWRP and it won't let me install the update. So to sum this up, How do you remove TWRP Recovery and reset it back to the original recovery.
Thanks.

or stop trying to update using otas if your rooted.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
well, it is a ota update and it keeps annoying me so i thought maybe if i remove twrp, update, then it would be gone.
Try this go into settings/system update/htc software update and uncheck it to see if that helps.

thanks for the help and what is new in the new ota update? i want to stay up to date on my phone and if i ever thought of updating, what should i do and can you show me how to remove TWRP without deleting anything on the phone? like i want to reset the recovery back to the original.
Well there is no original recovery for the Evo3d. That's why you have to load one on the phone to gain the ability to make nandroids, flash custom roms, tweaks, kernels etc. Once you unlock your device "via" revolutionary, htc unlock etc you have a choice between recoveries like twrp, cwm etc. Removing twrp would take away your abilities I mentioned above unless you load a different recovery. To remove twrp you have to run an ruu. Then you will be unrooted with no recovery. So basically there's no point in being rooted if you have no recovery. Also as far as updating and staying current just search the development section pick a rom and read what it include in the channel log. There are more than enough roms out that have all of the latest updates already include. If you choose a sense rom or your rom is based off of sense/stock you can just go into setting/software updates/ and update profile and prl. As far as the radio update is concerned you could update that as we'll from the same place in settings but you would have to take an ota I believe and that would result in loosing root so of course you would have to reroot again. There is a thread with all of the latest Evo3d radios in the development section that allows you to dl different radios and flash them but I would strongly suggest you read and read more before you attempt to flash a radio update or radio downgrade its the one true time were you could brick your device. But nevertheless it can be done with the right knowledge and xda just so happens to have an endless supply.
Hope this helps.

Seems your question was never correctly and directly answered.
Short answer: To switch recovery's loaded on the EVO 3D, simple, flash another recovery.img file. My application, Flash Image GUI, makes this very simple. Also, the fastboot command is fairly simple, fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img.
Longer more technical answer: Recovery partition is large enough to basically hold a kernel plus some extras. The kernel will contain busybox, some other needed tools and a small recovery binary which displays the menus and executes the commands.
If you want to load the stock recovery, it can be found inside of the RUU files named as recovery.img.
Keep in mind, loading the stock recovery will ONLY allow HTC signed .zip files to be flashed, which no developer will be able to produce and will NOT allow adb to run, thus preventing root shell access. Essentially, the stock recovery will lock down recovery mode.
Hope that helps!

delete updater.apk and the system update will never show up again I think it's in system/apps just delete the file using root explorer / titanium and reboot and it shouldn't pop up again
easy just install another custom recovery like this one here.4ext http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560279 enjoy

FYI its not needed in most cases. You can run an ruu or flash a fastboot zip.also you don't need it to install the 2.17 update there are aio's with and without hboots. I have a copy of the "stock recovery" cdma as well and have never needed it to update anything.

I havent said just a 2.17 update..........OTA is the keyword here.
The OP wants to know why he is unable to install the update which is coming to his phone Over-the-Air by HTC/carrier , for which he will need stock recovery IMO.
Read the 7th post of the thread. The op asked if he wanted to update in the future what can he do. The ota issue was solved if you read the thread it was just an update notice that was bothering him. Also you dont need the stock recovery to take ota updates you can just run an ruu.

Evo won't go back to factory.

I bought an evo 3d from a guy today off craiglist and he gave it to me with MIUI loaded onto it. So I figured no problem I will just restore to factory and do what I want to do rooting wise from there. I did a factory restore but it is still running MIUI and I don't know how to get it uninstalled and back to factory. It is running HBOOT 1.50 so I tried to flash a new rom via fastboot-->recovery even though I know that wont leave the rom completely working right but I was just trying to get rid of this MIUI rom. It said it flashed correctly but nothing changed on reboot it is still running MIUI. He gave it to me with the HBOOT unlocked already. Is there anyone that can help me getting a different rom, preferrably one as close to sense as possible running on this thing? I never ran into problems like this with my EVO 4g. Thanks to all!

If already unlocked, using fastboot to get into recovery and flashing from there should have worked.
I would fastboot oem lock the device. Then running an ruu to get to stock. Wipe the entire sd card. Then follow htc evo hacks guide to root/unlock. Hboot 1.5.
That will unlock it again and give you your recovery. (I would probably use twrp instead of cwm if I were you).
Once done with that go ahead and flash su and make your nand backup. Should be good to go after that.

If you relock the device, run the RUU first, then fastboot oem lock. You should try the superwipe tool located in the development thread under InfectedROM Eternity, Then try flashing a ROM. There are a few ROMs that are pretty stock, including a basic sense ROM with very few alterations. Head over to development and check them out.

yeah I did a factory reset by going through menu-->settings-->about phone-->factory reset and tried factory resetting through recovery mode but as soon as it boots it looks like it has been reset. Unfortunately after I do the touch android character to continue options (sign into google, etc) it just goes straight into miui rather than how a factory evo 3d should look which is running gingerbread. Its so frustrating.

Doing a factory reset is not the same as wiping.
You need to do a full wipe from recovery. Boot into the bootloader by hooking your phone up to the pc, navigate to your adb and fastboot folder and type:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Then type:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Once in recovery flash the superwipe.zip I mentioned before, then flash a ROM.
Check out this thread for information on how to get fastboot and adb, where to put them, and everything else you need to know about flashing with 1.5.
Then, before you do anything with your phone, look here for the superwipe.zip

thanks. im still having a problem cause the phone is running TWRP recovery and the bootloader is unlocked but he wiped the SD card so all the files that should be on it after the unlock and flash of the recovery are gone. Im having a huge problem trying to get this MIUI off the phone. I just want to get it back to running a stock rom so I can activate it on my line and I am not too good with this whole unrooting stuff. Is there a simple way to do it? I tried going through fastboot--recovery then flashing the superwipe but it just ended up causing the phone to be stuck on the white screen on reboot with the green HTC.

After you wipe the hone you need to flash a ROM. When you wipe the phone it is completely blank.
Are you just doing a factory reset and rebooting? If so, that won't get you back to an HTC ROM. You need to wipe and then flash a new ROM. That will get you off of miui.
So you flashed the super wipe and then didn't flash a ROM? You have no OS loaded on your phone. Download a ROM, put it on your sd card, and flash it. Make sure it's a sense ROM since you'll need to be on a sense ROM to activate it. No need to unroot.

No I used superwipe and then flashed clean rom 2.9.5 but it got stuck on the white screen on the reboot.
Do I have to use adb to run fastboot and then go into recovery or can I turn the phone off, boot into fastboot by holding power, vol down and going into recovery?

Since you're on hboot 1.5, you either need to flash using joeykrim's flash image gui app, or you need to put your phone in Gaynor, plug into the computer, and from the command prompt on your computer boot your recovery image. It's something like fastboot boot recovery.img. You will need to search for the exact command. Once you boot into recovery using that method you will be fine, just use recovery like normal. If you don't use one of those two methods you won't be able to flash the boot.img, so the phone won't boot. Good luck.

I had my wife's EVO 3D working fine on VipeRom2.1 I think and when i tried to update it to 2.5 it went into a reboot loop. I cleared everything by formatting the system and clearing the cache and data and nothing. I tried a different rom, MeanRom and same thing. Right before it seems like it is going to get me to the unlock screen, reboot. I can get into the bootloader and the recovery just fine but no matter what i install, reboot, reboot, reboot.

Did you change/update your radios at all?
I am not sure of the software version. I tried going back to unrooted stock with RUU_Shooter_U_HTC_ARA_1.24.415.2_Radio_10.55.9020.00_10.13.9020.29_M_release_208706_signed and it gave me a version error.
I am running radio 0.97.10.0808 according to the relocked screen that I am getting while trying to restore to unlocked sprint stock.
And now I see the difference in radio and the version in the restore file.
Thanks for the assistance, my Epic Touch 4g has been so simple to tinker with, this thing is a pain in the rear.
The RUU you installed was for the GSM version of the phone, re-run the CDMA version. The GSM version is called Shooter_U whereas the sprint version is just called Shooter.
I'm guessing this would be a good place to start?
http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=4
I will try this one when I get home today. Hopefully I can get it back stock and then start over and get a functional custom ROM working.
The wife was not to happy I blew up her phone yesterday trying to update it, I am guessing she is not going to let me "fix" it again.
Yupp, install one of them, not sure which one will allow you to do the HTC unlock though.
I think I figured out what I did wrong in the first place. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I forgot that 1.5 S-ON can't just install the ROM from the standard recovery method like I can with my Epic Touch 4G. I think I need follow the "How to Flash Any ROM or Kernel You Want" instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821. I just booted to recovery and tried to install the ROM. Does this sound about right?

I didn't look at the link you posted. But with hboot 1.5 you can not write to the boot partition from recovery. In order to do this you need to extract the boot img from the ROM your gonna flash and fastboot flash boot boot.img then fastboot boot recovery.img will take you to recovery and flash ROM from there

You actually dont need to do both. If you just do a fastboot boot recovery.img it will give you complete access, including flashing the kernal. So after you type that command, it will load a the custom recovery and when you flash the rom, it will flash the kernel included with the rom as well. FYI you need to do a fastboot boot recovery.img each time you want to flash a kernel. If you arent changing kernals then you can just go into recovery as you normally would and flash a rom. If you want to flash a kernal without hooking up to a computer, then read into Flash Image GUI.

This is what I thought, The first one I tried was the newest version of ViperRom. I first tried to just flash over top of the existing rom with the hope I would not have to reset everything and make her start over with how she had it setup, I guess the newest version had a newer kernel. Hopefully I am able to get it back to a functional state this afternoon.

I believe that does have the anthrax kernel havent downloadedthe new version. However i know some people have been having problems with roms that are based off the new OTA if their phones still have the old firmware. Definatly flash teh kernel/boot via fastboot recovery that should take care of the problem.
Correction not anthrax.
I got everything back working yesterday, I guess doing it correct the first time will save me some headache. I just need to remeber to start recovery from windows instead of from the bootloader screen. Thanks for the assistance.

Think I screwed the pooch

First time flashing. Unlocked using HTC method, thought I backed up my rom using rom manager, went and flashed to Cyanogenmod 9. Didn't like it, wanted to go back to stock, but can't find the back up. Now my radio doesn't work, can't figure out which version of stock rom I need to flash either. Any help appreciated.
with htc unlock root, you need to flash roms by booting to recovery through fastboot, there are other options, but this one works 100% of the time.
Well yeah, I did that, but how to I get a stock rom back on so my phone will work? I can't connect to the mobile network now. How do I know which stock rom to download? I guess I don't understand how to tell I'm getting the right rom.
U want the latest ruu it will update everything.. dunno how u flash cause I'm s off

Check the stickies, there's a link to stock rooted ROMs in there somewhere. I'd link it, but I'm in a crappy area and it takes ages to load a thread.
On the other hand, why not just pick a ROM that's not in alpha and actually has most features working?

You would want to boot into the bootloader, relock it and DL the RUU found in this LINK. Once downloaded, run the RUU.exe file on your pc while your phone is in the bootloader. It will flash your phone with the stock 2.17 update. When you are completed, boot back into bootloader and unlock your phone again using the HTC Unlock method. From there, you can flash any ROM with a 2.17 base and should be fine, but remember do a backup and to wipe first.
Thanks doeboy711!
I'm not too impressed with TWRP2 as it wasn't completely wiping things when it should have been so I recommend the older TWRP 1.1 (recovery). Also since you have hboot 1.5 you'll probably find Flash Image GUI a little easier to use for flashing kernels. If you didn't flash the right kernel that might be why your radio is not working. You can find flash image gui Here. It's pretty self explanatory. Before you flash a new rom, open Flash image gui, select kernel, browse to the rom. Let it do it's thing and when it prompts you to reboot to recovery, flash your rom like normal.
Actually, do I want to flash the RUU since it's still S-ON?
Do you have a HBoot 1.5? If so, that is the only way to upgrade to the new 2.17 base, which is the base of all the new ROM's. Just ensure that you lock the bootloader before you run the RUU or it will fail. It won't brick your device, but you will have to run it twice, learned the hard way here lol. Just pull your battery and boot into bootloader, lock it and then run the RUU if you did run it while it was unlocked still.
If you have a lower Hboot and can gain S-off, then no, don't run the RUU. You should be able to get S-off and flash anything you want at anytime.
Not sure how I'm supposed to get the RUU without a premium account at filefactory
Which hboot are you on? 1.4 or 1.5?
Sorry, hboot 1.50

Post 55 had another DL for it but I saved you the time to try and find it and here it IS.
doeboy711, you are awesome. Thanks for the help, I'm gonna try it right now.
Do I backup and wipe before I flash this RUU?

Well you will loose everything once you run the RUU, so if you want to back up apps it's up to you. The RUU will wipe everything for you though, so don't worry about that.
I've got it back to normal. Thanks for your help.

EVO 3D CDMA ICS Help

I have the CDMA Evo 3D
*** UNLOCKED ***
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.50.0000
eMMC-boot
It is Rooted and running the Sprint 2.17 odex ROM 2.3.4 Gingerbread
With TWRP Recovery.
I've been reading forums for three weeks. No one has given me a clear answer.
What I want to do is get ICS. Now before you all facepalm and say "Use the wire trick noob" It's not that simple.
My phone was flashed to Boost Mobile. I didn't flash it and I have not the slightest Idea how to flash and according to support at http://www.unlimited.io The wire trick will clear my flash. So the wire trick is a no no.
Now there was a method where you flash the boot.img using fastboot
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
It pushes it and says success.
Then I reboot into recovery (vol down and power button)
and flash the ROM. It bootloops every single time.
I've been looking for a way to S-Off safely with no luck, so now I'm determined to master the flash process. All i want is One working ICS ROM for my device.
Thanks in advance for the help, Nova.
Have you tried to flash the kernel AFTER flashing the ROM?
It really is being s-on that is causing the issue.

Sending...
OKAY
*Random times here*
Finished
Now i've rebooted and the bootanimation is playing. I'll update to tell if it's bootlooping
Yup, still bootlooping.
ried entire process with Cool ICS ROm. NO BOOTLOOP ! YAY!
but instead it shows the homescreen for three seconds then shuts off.
The link below discusses Boost. The poster seems to know a lot about Boost so you might want to PM him about getting s-off. I really do think s-off will fix your issues.

Why don't you just flash a stock gingerbread ROM them stock recovery and relock your bootloader then take the ota update , let it install then unlock via HTC Dev again...
from what I learned from being S-ON with 1.5 unlocked, you have to:
flash the boot.img file BEFORE flashing the ROM. extract it from the ROM push it via fastboot, enter recovery via fastboot then wipe wipe WIPE everything except your SD card 3X, flash ROM, enjoy ICS goodness

Both are in the CDMA development stickies. I think rooting is still the same for the new ota.

Have you try using live boot-cd by unknownforce (hope not wrong to spell his name)? That method will temp brick your phone so all partition will back to stock, i have try once and my flashed number is disappear and need to reflash carrier once again.

If you are booting recovery via fast boot and then flashing a ROM, there is no need to flash boot.img separately. The recovery will work as if you are s-off. And there is no logic in wiping partitions 3x.....
Or you can directly flash a ROM from recovery without booting recovery via fast boot, and then flash boot.img via fast boot.
Or use 4ext recovery and turn smart flash on, and flash ROMs directly without using fast boot.

SO If I use 4EXT it'll let me flash ICS even though I currently run Gingerbread? I'll give it a try tonight, thanks

If you can run ics ROM, then yes you can use 4ext recovery.....if you can't run ics in any way then you can't.

I can't, i'll just wait for an RUU of the OTA update, then re-root and flash ROMs then.

It might my friend..maybe..juuust maybe it will. If it does o0u can always try and reflash back to Boost?
As far as I know, both unknownforce's, and the wire trick to downgrade the bootloader to hboot 1.4 will erase your flash to boost... Ask me how I know...lol!
Have you tried the app flash image GUI? When I was s on, I used this app to flash the kernel, then I went to recovery, and flashed the Rom, and all worked as long as the kernel was compatible with the specific Rom I was flashing, maybe you can try flashing the VM leak kernel, then an ics Rom

That's just the way its ever worked for me so I found it was worth giving out my way at least as an opinion I know once you boot into recovery via fastboot is SUPPOSED to work that way, never did for me hence my weird method. Wiping partitions may not have any logic to you sir, but to some of us it does back from the OG EVO days, that's what devs there used to post, that's what I've gone with as a routine for myself.
I've known peeps who attempt the ROM first boot then reflash boot.img after- endless powercycle. Never happened when I tried it but eh
4EXT wasn't always around so I guess I'm still trying to get used to easier flashin on this phone. I enver used smart flash on this one because when I was S-ON I did it the fastboot method, then the Unknown Force method came to be and I never had a need for it.
Evo 3D on Boost S-off but problems with ICS ROMs
Background:
EVO 3D (CDMA) flashed to Boost Mobile. Sept 2011
Rooted HTC Method Oct 2011
ROMs ROMs ROMs until about 6 months ago (currently using Eternity Infected Rom 1.4.2)
Tried to go to ICS and had problems so did S-off wire trick Aug 2012 (Lost Boost Mobile flash) Had to reflash to Boost.
Now:
****Unlocked****
Shooter XC Ship S-OFF RL
HBOOT 1.50.0000
baseband 97.10.0808
I'm in a quandry at this point of what to do next.
I'm not able to successfully load any of the new ROMs. I tried just upgrading to Infected ROM 2.0 but it also always has issues like it forces me to use skype or email won't open. I'm guessing it is because I load my old data from Titanium backup and it isn't compatible. I tried Mean ROM and it works and changes my kernel but I don't like it as it is full of Sprint Bloatware which does me no good on Boost. I've tried to load the latest Viper ICS ROM and it just stays stuck on the HTC screen.
