Hi. I recently got a white Galaxy S 2 not from my region. It uses XWKI4. I'm just wondering should I use the modem from my region (DXKI1) or just stick to this? Will it really make a difference? I thought about this because I was reading posts in the Official Firmware thread talking about which modem was better for battery consumption etc.
Its a general rule with modems is that you should always try different ones to find which is best for your region and your network.
So far I found that the best modems for me have been the KH3 and KI4. Very similar performance.

What factors do you consider in finding out which is the best one? Is there something I should monitor?

You will notice which ones perform worse than others. It will be obvious when you start getting poor network strength and/or download speeds. Some can have a significant effect on battery life.

Use an App like "speed test" and compare the perfirmance results of that versus the results of battery life, call quality, and GPS between the different modems that you try...

Any recommendations for a modem to use with o2/giffgaff ??
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I'm just using Omega rom with the modem from that and it works beautifully, always get signal and strong internet speeds. Much better than my S2 when I used to flash new radios
A friend of mine has a O2 phone and i think he has XXLE5 on it
You cannot be recommended the best Modem. Even from people on the same network, they are not in the same are, going to the same places you go.
You have to work out which one is best for you. There is no right answer.

Hi everybody...
Can somebody tell me which is the best modem for India in terms of battery usage??
I have already many modems like lph lps lp9 etc etc... but no use.....
I use XXLPS.. That's great.. If you want really good coverage try nelp3.. But that's not to battery efficient..
I tried that.. Bt it was also very hungry.. 40% battery drop overnight with no wakelocks or othr usage

I know this probably doesn't help much but try a few different ones and see how your signal changes. Maybe use each one for a day and determine battery drain, network and cellular signal. It varies depending on carrier, location, etc. so you need to try them out and cannot rely on someone else's best option.

I'm glad you posted in a thread instead of starting one, but with modems you need to try multiple ones to get the correct one. My modem may have better battery life and signal, but worse GPS, or vice versa. Just try different ones, no one can suggest one for you.

Just a noob trying to understand what's happening behind the curtain.
Could someone help me understand the difference between all the modems we've seen for the I717. What do these upgrades change and why have I and others seen such a difference in LTE speeds with these different upgrades?
Thanks for the knowledge.

different modems for different areas...one modem may work better for me in my area...which just got 3g last year...
some have better coverages...some get better connection using a different modem...
so bottom line a modem you are using in your state/area, my not work as good in my area......kk, which great for android users that have the custom capability to flash a use a different modem...
Someone can recommend to me for a good modem to my sgs 2 for battery life?
I have a problem that when my 3g is on, my battery life going down very fast. And when i turn the 3g off is very good.
My rom is wanamlite 12.2 4.0.3
Kernel siyha 4.1.4

With LQ6 modem, it's exactly the same issue.
Two ways to find a modem that will work well for you:-
a) Find someone in the same country who uses the same carrier as you & ask them which modem they use, and try that modem in the first instance.
b) Get a bunch of modems (lots of links to CWM flashable modems on XDA) & try as many as you need to until you find one that works well for you.
You mean xxlq6?

Try from all this modem?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I am using the xxlq6 modem. The signal is great everywhere, and when it's working in 3g, the consumption is not excessive. The battery lasts me 18/19 hours mixed between wi-fi and 3g, with 3/3:30 hours of screen and use more than normal. In any case I advise you to try several and see which modem is best for you. I tried several before I get to that modem.
See 3G will eat battery.. Its a fact.. Dont ask which modem u should use... Try urself... And see which suits u and your needs...
Peace
Hit Thanks & It will Disappear

Modems are location dependent. Also keep in mind that they are like ROMs and kernels in that you have to give them three to four battery cycles for them to settle down for you to notice a difference.

My understanding is that on the I777 the modem and the kernel are combined in one partition. Although I've installed several different roms so presumably different kernels, my modem has stayed the same: I777UCKH7
Is there an advantage to trying different modems? How would I do it?

Yes, and there's already a thread in the development section addressing all of your questions.

That thread is 3 years long and I apparently didn't read enough of it. Had an unfortunate experience. Oh well. Back to the way it was before - minus several weeks due to a bad backup.

Can't believe you have flashed several roms and the modem hasn't changed. Most of the newer roms I have flashed have included the latest ucmd8 modem.

If he's been flashing AOSP-based roms they won't change the modem, so it's conceivable he's had the same modem across different flashes.

I may have misunderstood what I read. I thought it meant the modem was always linked to the kernel so it can't be flashed separately. Now I'm just plain confused so don't mind me. ;p

I'm confused about why you'd pick one over the other. Are you looking for newer/faster? The best one for where you live? The one that runs best with your Rom? I had a lot of problems after I tried to flash the ucmd8 - May have been coincidental but either way the modem didn't work.

Can someone direct me to information about modems? The development thread referenced above lists a number of modems, but doesn't tell anything about them. Is one better than another? Is the latest one always the best one? The development thread used to have a map, but it has been removed. Are some modems better in some areas than others? I am trying to find the one in my area (central California) that has be best reception in a limited coverage area.
I am running the latest version of AOKP dated 6/24/13 and the baseband version (modem?) is i777UCKH7.

You answered your own question right there - flash them all and give each one about a day to see how your reception is. The map you're talking about was removed ages ago because it became corrupted.
In the end no one can tell you which one is better for you; just because it's the latest modem doesn't mean anything at all, in terms of reception/quality.

Thanks. It sounds like there is no reason to start playing around with modems unless you are actually having reception issues and then it's totally trial and error. My modem (UCKH7) seems ok here (southern CA) so if it ain't broke...
