Orange UK stock rom question - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Sorry if this sounds dumb, but moving from a ZTE blade to a SGS2 I'd rather check and sound dumb than mess up.
I managed to root and flash a custom rom on my SGS2, but wanted to double check before downloading the carrier stock rom for safe keeping. I'm on Orange UK and when I look there are 2 stock roms for this, BVKE2 and the other is BVKG3. I assume KG3 is newer but if I remember right mine was originally KH2, so does it matter which rom I get?
thanks
Sean

not really. Im assuming you are keeping it incase you have to flash it back for warranty purposes? If so it wont matter which one you keep as long as they are definitely orange uk branded roms.

Thanks, yes it's just incase I need to return for any reason.

[Q] Going back to stock..EVERYTHING

I have a Galaxy s2 with BELL that's rooted, custom kernel and custom ROM and im wondering how I can put my phone EXACTLY how it was before I rooted and put my custom rom on it.
I want it exactly how it came when I got it from BELL.
If anyone can help that'd be appreciated.
Thanks,
Well you can get it back to stock, but not "bell stock." The reason being that there is no bell firmware anywhere on the internet yet, you can flash one of the generic european rom from samsung but unfortunately you cannot revert to the bell KG2 that came with the phone...
Awh man..
Whyy hasnt anyone ripped their own stock rom yet
Basically... when its available..IF its available. Would I be able to throw it on and get OTA upgrades again? I really dont see a difference between stock and rooted.. I mean I DO understand what It gives you.. but honestly the phone is already powerful enough that I really dont need to tweak it.

I read somewhere that bell has to actually release a FW update before we have something to go back to, i don't think anyone ripping their rom would work for us. Then again I'm not sure, but as it stands theres literally nothing on the net with bell on it for the GS2 so you are pretty much stuck with the generic european stuff.
To be honest, i think if you want oTA updates you'd be much better off going with a generic european Fw, bell always always takes forever to deliver updates because it has to go through them, i remember it took a while for bell to get froyo on the GS1 when it had been out forever for the european gs1's and it worked fine.

Ah i see.. WELL THEN.
What Kernel and ROM are YOU using?
I bought a protection plan at bestbuy so hopefully i can bring it back and they'll give me a new one.. I liked the look and stability of my bell rom kernal etc right now i got villainrom running and it keeps going from hspa+ to 3g etc and its annoying...
Edit: seems to only happen when data is not being used. Makes sense. Battery saving feature maybe? When bell comes out with an update If they ever do, will it also include a kernel update? Making my phone completely bell again. I would like to have my bell account app back lol.

Im just using a rooted kernel off CFROOT, with stock bell KG2 Firmware. Haven't seen a reason to put any modded rom yet, the stock rom actually is perfect, good battery life too. Tempted by CM7 though, I'm constantly tempted to try it.
Hmm yeah when they release a rom you can flash using odin, it will write the kernel, modem etc and your phone will be totally "bell" again. I'm pretty sure you can download the bell account app from market?
Lol I was smart and used cwm to back up my bell rom, thanj god custom works perfectly well

Yeaa... I didn't do much research before flashing a custom rom stupid me didn't back anything up. And no there's no bell app in the marketplace

So from your backed up bell rom, can you get the 3 files for Odin out of it? Or i guess its not that simple?
Surely if you root, you flash a non-stock kernel? So even a nandroid/CWM backup will not be COMPLETELY stock?
Why is everyone so worried about going back to stock? Just wondering, because the european versions work just as good as the stock one, if not better, because of root.
The real question we should be asking is will Bell or Samsung release the stock files? Im sure they will, and if they don't someone will find a way to extract the stock files.

Yeah i understand that.. All i was trying to say is relax, if your willing to take a chance and temporarily void your warranty flash away, because soon enough someone will have the stock bell files.

[Q] GS2 kies most recent firmware CANADA

I have a Canadian Bell Mobility GS2.
I9100MUG KG2
kernel says 2.6.35.7 I9100ZS KE7
android 2.3.3
No problems connecting to PC thru USB, bluetooth, or kies wifi.
Kies is supposed to update the firmware automatically, but has given me a message that my version of phone doesnt support firmware upgrades. Does this mean I'm stuck with my firmware, or does it mean that I'm already up to date?
It means there hasn't been an update released for the Bell phone yet.
Does anyone know if the Bell firmware can be changed to an EU firmware, so we are able to install custom ROMs?

Yes, it works. However, there is no way to go back to stock bell firmware right now, so you're voiding your warranty by doing so.

Thanks Electroz, your help is much appreciated.
Would I have to flash a stock EU from first so I can get CWM on the phone? I am very sorry if this sounds like a noob question, but I am very new to the SG2 and a lot of this is a bit foreign to me right now, I am used to the rooting and installing on the x10.
If there is a thread I can search to guide me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it, or what I should be searching for, it would help alot. Looking at some of the custom ROMs people are putting out, they look amazing and I would love to try them out

Nope, you can just flash a cwm kernel and install the custom rom from there. No need to flash an EU rom first.

[Q] Can I flash Unbranded firmware over Oranges?

I'm currently on Oranges I9300BVALE4 Firmware, is it possible to use Odin to flash I9300XXBLFB over it? I just want clarification before I do something which I don't know the outcome.
Thanks

I know what I'm doing, I just want clarification that it works before finding out myself.
Whether it works is only dependend on the hardware (and thus name), not carrier or branded Rom.
If you're on i9300 or i9300T it will work, otherwise you need to go to the correct forum and follow their corresponding tutorial
In a similar vein, after a successful flash, can updates then occur automatically without the need for flashing every time new stock firmware becomes available? I ask because when I come to selling on, I don't want potential buyers put off because, let's face it, the majority of people don't understand the whole flashing thing and will run a mile.

[Q] Carrier branded to unbranded??

This is probably a real noob question but is it possible to flash from a carrier firmware/image (i'm currently on OrangeUK I9300BVALF4) to the new XXBLF unbranded firmware/image without root or any negative effects??
goto sammobile.com
Should be no implications whatsoever.
Just flash a stock unbranded firmware via odin, but follow all instructions to the letter!!!!!
In the remote possibility that something goes wrong then as long as you aren't trying to root then just send it back to sammy for a fix and claim that kies screwed it up.
That said... standard disclaimer that you flash or modify your phone at your own risk and nobody is responsible but you if it goes belly up.

Should probably add that I'm not commenting on the specific firmware you want to flash, just that there is no problem inn principle flashing an unbranded firmware onto a branded handset.
Just search the forums and try and flash one for the correct region.

Thanks badger, I may wait a little before going ahead just in case. Seems it might be a little much just to get a brightness slider on the notifications bar
Thanks Taysider, I'd found a download for the unbraded already but nice to know about sammobile.com

[Q] i9305 unlocking

I'm looking to break my android cherry, having been an iOS user so excuse the noob questions. I have been looking to get a i9305 from Orange (UK). My question is if I get the phone from orange, have it unlocked but not rooted and use a sim card from another carrier like O2 or vodafone will I still get OTA updates as those network carriers don't even sell the i9305.
I'm probably going to go with T-Mobile as they have a good sim only deal at the moment but as only Orange sell the phone on payg, would a T-Mobile sim work without having to unlock the phone?
Lastly how easy is it to remove the stuff that network carriers put on the phone, simple a case of deleting apps or is that where rooting comes in?
If you unlocked it you would get orange branded updates, you can solve this by flashing an unbranded or O2 branded stock ROM.
And to debloat you need to be rooted because the carrier apps are installed on the system partition which is only accessible by the root user.
Also I would ask T-Mobile or Orange about the sim question because they are changing carrier to EE now so it may work if not just buy what you want and unlock it (or flash everything can be solved by flashing)
I take pleasure in welcoming you to the world of Android and hope you have a nice time being free from the shackles of a corporate entity.

Thanks for the info. Couple more noob questions. If I get the phone on orange, unlock it and use a t-mobile sim, flash it with for example and unbranded stock ROM, then which updates will I get or from who? Directly from Samsung?
Wouldn't flashing an unbranded ROM automatically remove the bloat and by that I mean the stuff Orange put on not the original bloat from Samsung if that makes sense. And for future updates should then install without any problems as it's a stock ROM not a custom one? Would a stock rom increase the flash counter? If so how can I reset it?
Where can I get an unbranded ROM for the i9305 from, if there even is one (Sammobile isn't showing a UK version yet), and do you know of a guide I can follow? I've got a old HTC, might try on that first just in case I end up bricking it.
Sorry about all the questions. Really appreciate the help.

Yes flashing an unbranded ROM will remove the bloatware and you will get updates from Samsung.
There is a PC application which can find stock ROMs direct from Samsung's servers called checkfus, search with that if a ROM exists it will find it.
And a stock ROM shouldn't increase the flash counter only custom you can use the triangle away app to reset it from chainfire.
