Anyone know if its possible and how I can use the built in eBook reader to read my own books in either epub or pdf format? I couldn't find the local storage directory for downloaded books. If there's no way, any suggested ebook readers that have a similar asthetic feel to the built in reader? Lumiread on the Acer iconia is really nice, but it doesn't appear to be downloadable anywhere. Aldiko is serviceable, but I don't really like the look and feel. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I didn't try pdf but I can read my epub books from sdcar with default reader. You can import your books to your shelf, then can read easily.
Better to use default reader to use full pen function, therefore I don't prefer any 3rd party ebook reader.
I've mostly been using FBreader for .epub books. Don't think it supports pdfs, though.
I prefer moon+ reader over aldiko myself. I use the pay version so I'm not to clear what features the free version has or I'd post them. Available at the Android market.

The ereader in View/Flyer will automatically import any epub it finds in SD or internal sd. I have created a folder and named it books with all my magazine's, books, etc.. and works very well for me. Whenever
I add something it imports it and ready to view quickly.

I'll echo this, even though it took a minute to get it to work. If you have trouble getting the reader to find your epub files, go onto the app settings and click the "clear data" button. Then restart your Flyer. That allowed the reader to find the files.
I just wish it could read Kindle books.

I concur with that...
But I don't like the built-in reader. I find the margins of that one horrible, without any means of changing them... And when I turn it to mobile layout, it ignores the embedded font while still having too wide margins...

i use the Flyer mainly as an ereader and i've pretty much tested all the reader apps out here...i stuck with Aldiko...it doubles up on the data storage by 'importing' the books on the device, but it is the most stable without adds
and you can set up your Calibre library as a server using a no-ip address and connect to it via wifi or 3G from within Aldiko (or just access your library via a web browser)
it really is a great setup

So did I I dismissed Aldiko after finding out it didn't support highlighting. And why I'd love to get the included reader app to work as I want it... The pen highlighting is awesome.
I finally ended up with Mantano Reader. The two advantages is the fact that it doesn't double up my books and it supports highlighting. It doesn't even add things to my ebook library, but keeps a shadow folder structure where it puts the (extracted) covers and it has a sqlite db where it saves extra info.
The only drawback is the fact that doesn't read whole font-families. So the italic (especially noticeable) is the internal one and not the one that belongs to your font family...
Not sure about the connection to Calibre, I use my browser to go to my Calibre library (or an USB cable...)

Yeah. I found out about Calibre not long after I made that post. It works almost like a charm. I have an issue with some of the page breaks it makes and can't seem to fix it. Other than that, I love it.

I would like to have a book reader app, supporting epub or fb2 format. The google books does not support this sadly. I like iBooks for iPad, want something similar.
What I did try:
Google Books - doesn't support local files at all
Kindle - need to create account and doesn't support fb2/epub
FBReader - best for phones, but does not support splitting text into two columns, so you can hardly read in landscape mode.
Kobo - same as Kindle
My favorite one to use is the Nook app. It supports epub files, but I'm not sure about the fb2. You do have to create an account for it but I think it is worth it. My favorite thing about it is that it has the turn page animations and you can change the color of the font and the color of the pages to make it look more like a real book. It also is quite smooth and doesn't lag that much. Hope this helps!

Aldiko looks amazing on the Tab. There were some crash issues, but they came out with an updated version that supposedly addressed this. I haven't tested extensively enough to verify, so YMMV.

I believe BN has that ability stripped on the Market version of the nook app. If you own a nook color, the stock book reader will display covers, but the market app will not. It is one of the reasons I will revert to stock on my NC (and the fact that I got the tab for other tablet uses).
An alternative is the Aldiko reader - it handles epub and shows cover thumbnails.

Yeah, but I really like the page turn animation that the nook app offers. Aldiko isn't bad, but it doesn't have the feel of a real book like Nook does. Thanks for your feedback man.

Try CoolReader, it supports 2 columns in landscape mode.
It's also open source, used in many e-ink readers and is highly customizable via CSS.
The only missing feature is the lights out mode for Honeycomb, but it will probably appear soon or you can always contribute a patch.

I have been trying different readers and found using Nook for my epub books works great with Calibre. I've had it installed on my pc for easy conversion and recently found there is an android app for it as well. The android app allows you to download your epub books from your pc to your device via wifi. Using the Nook app, I can download directly to My Document directory.
Aldiko on the Tab 10.1?
How does Aldiko behave under Honeycomb on the 10.1? I love Aldiko for all its features, but on my HTC Hero and Desire HD it has ridiculous amounts of lag when updating the book cover thumbnails when you are in any of the views.
On those devices, you scroll down just a few books and you see a default Aldiko cover which after a second or so updates to show the actual cover. If you scroll down more, again the same lag. But what is really annoying is that if you scroll up again to the books you just viewed, which had already shown the cover, they have reset to show the default Aldiko, so you have to wait again for it to update. Just looks so tacky, when the rest of the software is so polished.
I really don't understand why they can't update the thumbnails more smoothly, or just update them once.
Is it the same behaviour on the 10.1 or other Honeycomb devices?
That is the only thing really stopping me from getting Honeycomb over the HTC Flyer, because the Flyer's Reader UI like on all their latest phones is simply beautiful, I think it uses OpenGL so it so fluid. I do want to get the latest Android version, but I am such an avid reader I want the best possible experience...

Playing around with CM7 and I'm not all that keen on the Nook app, so I want to try and find a replacement. I use calibre on my PC and I also use the calibre library app, which will allow you to specify the download location.
The problem with Aldiko seems to be that you have to put the book on your NC first (doesn't matter where) and then import it. I'd like to have it so that when calibre puts it there, the reader sees it and we're good to go, but with Aldiko, I have to import after it's on the NC and then I have two copies of every book, unless I do some sort of cleanup.
Any suggestions on a cleaner way to use Aldiko or a different app, given what I'm using? I don't have to use the calibre library app either - if I can just set a download location that the reader will pick up without jumping through hoops.

Double check it. It duplicates for me by moving the book into it's library structure on the sdcard and leaving the old one where it is.

I use coolreader but I don't use Calibre so I can't help you there. I suspect your problem with Aldiko has to do with importing books into Aldiko rather than just opening them. I noticed that if I choose import after pointing the program at the book location on the sd card it makes a copy and puts it on my shelf thingie. if I don't import (and let it make the copy) I don't get the cover on my shelf.

Aldiko is great but I have the same problem. I would love to use the "Send to device" function, in Calibre.
I image the problem lies in the setup, there must be a way to setup a custom device and tell it where the files should go.

Maybe I'm old-school, but I use the Nook app for all my B&N books, which is mostly what I have. It's generally my go-to so far for the public domain books too, but I haven't read much lately outside of PDFs for work using ezPDF. The last update that added magazines etc made it much nicer and more stable for me.
I like the B&N Nook app okay, but the organization seems to be a tad lacking to me. You can only do 'recent', 'title' and 'author' and you can't do a simple list (just words) either.
Aldiko, for example, will do series. FBreader will do tags and you can set favorites. And so on.
At least the app has a decent night mode vs the grey that's on stock. But shelves might be nicer I think. And adding some of the other stuff as well.

I was on aldiko previously until they have issues with calibre opds format lately. I have moved to fbreader as opds works great but now I have another issue. Fbsync doesn't seem to work when trying to sync bookmarks. Whenever I click sync it will force close. It works on my attic though...

One thing I *really* like is the ability to use Aldiko and put a shortcut to a book right on the home screen.
Hm...My ideal reader:
Shortcuts to open books on home screen (like stock)
Recognize books in directory without need to "import" (everything but Aldiko, I think)
Autoscroll (moon+)
Recognize Tags (all but nook)
"Last reading" - FBReader opens right to the page of the last book you were reading which is essentially just like the stock "Last Reading" button from the status bar.
Organization/Collections (aldiko, moon+)
Ability to see and use TOC from details without opening book (nook)
Multiple bookmarks (can't figure out how to even add a bookmark in nook app, it just puts one wherever you left off automatically.
On a side note, does anyone else find that the nook app does't honor screen timeouts or anything? It just keeps the display powered up and running. Accidentally ran my nook down completely because of it.
Slightly off the main topic, but I found this article yesterday about how to use either Aldiko or Moonreader along with Calibe and Dropbox to access your entire ebook library anywhere. I currently have 646 ebooks on my laptop and don't have them all on my different devices, so as long as I have WiFi or 3G I can connect and add any books I want to my Nook or phone.

I'm using Aldiko now (and the Nook app for any of my downloads from B&N, which is actually pretty few) and the only option it doesn't have that I want is the ability to synch the app between devices so if I'm reading on my Nook it will remember the page so I can continue from the same spot on my phone. Does Moonreader have an option like that?
I've been using coolreader for months and really like it. Free and I haven't found anything that I want to do frustrated.
I had been using the nook for android app, and it does work quite well. However I figure there are alternative readers out there and I would be doing myself a dis-service if I did not check a few of them out to see what else is available. So I installed moon reader and so far it is working nicely for me. I particularly like the night themes as they are very easy on my eyes.

What kind of sharing options does Moon+ have? Is there any type of option that will post the page you're on or percentage complete like Goodreads does? (I can't get the Goodreads app to work on my rooted Nook)
Definitely souring on Aldiko. Have some books that it is chopping up on-screen (dropping words/sentences from end/beginning of pages). Pulled up the same pages in fbreader and no problems. I've never had that issue in the nook app. Gotta try moon reader now...

Hi all!
This may have been asked before (actually I'm pretty sure, but combing through the last 5 pages of threads I'm having a hard time finding it), but my question is this: I've got a lot of ebooks in epub format (gotten from.... other places that I won't discuss here lol) that I am wanting to get loaded onto my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16gb wi-fi only) that I just got last week. I have been looking into several programs that say that they will transfer from my desktop to the tablet (Calibre and Adobe Digital Editions in particular both state that they will work with the Tab). And both say I have to have an ebook reader app on the Tab.
I say all that to ask this: 1.) will both Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre do what they say well (or if someone has a better preference please let me know!) or do I need to look at using a different program to transfer my ebooks; 2.) will the default Google Books app work to read those epub formatted books or do I need to get a different ebook reader app (and which one should I get)?

It works great, is open source and it will match the meta data of the cover art to the mobi file so the covet art actually shows up on my tab. A few pdf files i coverted did not turn out so good (spacing errors and such) but other than that i thimk it is a good program.

Ok well what's the difference between .mobi and .epub formats? I haven't really found a good definitive answer to that (even on trusty wikipedia). Is one really better than another?
Honestly I really dont know. I do know that it is the format the kindle app uses and that is what I needed. Sorry I cant be more help with that.

Not inexpensive but so much of a time saver that I don't mind. I Copy the files to a Dropbox folder on my PC. DL them from the DropBox Folder to eBook folder on My ST. Import and done.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 already includes an ebook reader. It was a part of the Touchwiz update. It can read the epub and PDF formats. It is compatible with the Adobe DRM if you are borrowing books from your library or buying other copy protected books, so you can give it your Adobe ID username and password, and it should be able to read them.
It is simply named "ebook" in the apps screen.
for transferring the books,
turn off the USB debugging under settings->Applications->Development
plug you tablet into your computer
browse to your tablet under your computer.
find the ebook folder on the tablet, put your ebook files in the ebook import folder
the path from my computer was "Computer\GT-P7510\Tablet\ebook\import"
After the files are copied, open the ebook app,
go to the menu and choose import to let the ebook reader app see the new books.
Barnes and Noble's Nook app supports .epub. Just drop your files into sdcard>Nook>MyDocuments and you're good to go. Not sure about DRM though.
For pdf's, I use ezPDF Reader. It's not free, but it's got some pretty nice features.
I use Aldiko, handles ePub and PDF which are my 2 main formats. I use Samba Filesharing for Android to create a network share, dump the files in and then use Aldiko's import folder feature to get them into it's library.

That's actually a pretty simple seeming way to transfer ebooks (all of mine are in epub (and for sure I'm not worried about DRM)) from my computer to the Tab. However, here's my sticky part. I HATE the look of the TouchWiz UI update. Loved the plain Jane Honeycomb that came with it (don't get me wrong, I think it added some very good features and needed updates), but the skin just makes it look silly to me. So my plan is to root and install a custom ROM of vanillia Ice Creme Sandwich when it comes out. That's why I'm looking for a third party (or Google) ebook reader.
I second the Nook App from B&N. Had a Nook color for about a year though and got used to the way the software works. Gave Nook to my wife and got the GT10.1. Just copy your epubs into the folder via varelawarfare's instructions and they'll turn up in your library. Haven't used the Kindle app much, but I prefer Nook over Aldiko, Google Books and the Samsung reader (but may just be because I'm used to it). I also use Overdrive reader as it is pretty good at seamlessly downloading DRM-ebooks (library for instance).
On my 8.9 the nook app seemed to be very sluggish, does it happen to everyone? I ended up using the book app that came with the tablet, its actually pretty good but some books it doesn't override the fonts thus doing weird stuff like keeping text black when I choose a dark background.
So it's really looking like the top picks for most people are either the Nook or Kindle readers or Akidio and Calibre for loading them onto the Tab? These are some great responses and suggestions from everyone! Super appreciative!

My take on this, since I spent a LOT of time looking for a good book / epub reader:
- Kindle: Need to convert to .MOBI format, no page-flip transitions
- eBook: Maximum number of files supported is 200, but does a good job otherwise
- Moon Reader+: Excellent reader, quirky but highly configurable, however cuts off last line of text for each page for some .epubs
- Aldiko Premium: Chokes when trying to load shelf, otherwise fine
- Mantano Reader: Very polished interface, developers listen to user feedback, handles PDF apart from .epub, no page-flip transitions
- EZ PDF Reader: Excellent for PDFs, but no .epub support
Bottom-line: I use Mantano
/would go for Moon Reader+ if Mantano were not available...

What I hate about all these ereaders is that none use the same folder for storing the epub files, some use /book, other /ebook or /ebooks
I'm using Aldiko for Epub and EZ PDF Reader for PDF. EZ PDF Reader is the only tool on Android with acceptable PDF quality (tried them all including Mantano, small text is unreadable).

So (if I'm reading this right) I can basically wirelessly update what new content I have on my computer to my Tab via wireless home network??? That beats having to use that freaking short cord that comes with my Tab. Heck... Thought just hit me. If I can remotely access my computer, wonder if (though that remote access and assuming of course that I'm in a wireless area) I could update my Tab content even when I'm away from the computer..... Interesting concept to me right there.

Yup! check on Calibre menu "preference-sharing over the net".
If your computer can be reached over internet it can be done everywhere otherwise just when you are connected on the same wireless router

My NT16 is on CM7 over SD card. I like it. All my books in both ePub and PDF are sideloaded via Calibre, and now need recommendations of what ebook readers to use? Also I bought EZPdf Reader from B&N before I started using CM7, so now how do I download it again to CM7?

Aldiko is the one I have found that most closely replicates the reading experience of the stock B&N app. You can also set up aldiko to browse calibre directly through the web interface to download books wirelessly. With the proper port forwarding, you can connect to calibre from anywhere in the world as long as it is open.
Another vote for Aldiko here.
I use Aldiko too, but lately I've noticed it getting slower and slower. It gives me a loading bar on every single page turn now.
I'm not sure why.
Moon+ is acceptable too, though it isn't quite as good.

You could always download the Nook app from the Android Market and continue using it the same way you did on stock - that's what I did.
FBReader is my number one choice in epub readers. It is not as pretty as some others but it has a clean design at focused on reading. When you open FBReader it opens directly to the last book and page you were at. The library is accessed from the menu along with the network libraries like feedbooks, smash books and others.

I know this is a Barnes and Noble device, but I like the Amazon Kindle app. It is the only app I have found that will reliably sync between my nook and my android phone. I do a LOT of reading, and don't like to waste time finding my place over and over. It does not have the customization that the others do, but the whispersync service more than makes up for that, in my opinion.

I've tried them all mantano is the best hands down!
For PDF files I use Adobe reader.. its very satisfactory... very good for magazines especially

I also use the Adobe reader for the PDF files. I read the Beacon Journal (Newspaper) every day. I tried Aldiko and other PDF readers. Not surprisingly the Adobe reader was the best. There was way to much lag with the others.
Using the android CM 10.2 installs, there have been problems noted for getting the Nook Reader and the crashing of the Amazon Kindle App. I'm doing this thread so a not to hijack the Kindle thread in Q&A.
Reading is the main thing I do with the HD. Not a gamer and but do like browsing, Email, and texting(Mighty Text). I use the Moon plus reader books I read. The app can be used for .epub, .mobi, pdf, and almost all the other formats for books. The books can be stored in any folder(s) you specify on your device or Dropbox. You can synchronize reading on different devices too. It formats the text well enough that I can actually use my phone to read. I don't know if it can keep track of different people reading and using the same device.
As far as I'm concerned, the Moon+ Reader is THE best but it is a paid app. I just looked and it's on Sale for $2.50! http://moondownload.com/
Thanks for the tip on mighty text. I was wondering if that was possible to do texting from the tablet. I think I may give it a try.
And I have the free version of moon+. This might be the time to buy the full version.

EBookDroid imo
Moon-Reader seems a bit slow flipping through the pages on a PDF , it sorta bugs me
EBookDroid imho is the much better it lets you change a lot of settings for example preload the pages of the PDF ahead of time so by the time you scroll down there already rendered .. It also has the ability to read comics, browse your local network and best of all its free

You might try Zo reader. I've been using it on my NC for over a year and now added it to the readers on my HD+. Works a treat.

A little late to the party here, but I wanted to add that you don't only have to use Overdrive for checked out books. I use Calibre Companion, and when I try to open a book after importing it from Calibre I have the option to use Overdrive as the reader. Then Overdrive will import it and, viola! It's really very simple and painless. The only possible drawback is that you end up with 2 copies of the book: one in the folder you have set for Calibre Companion to save its books, and one in the Overdrive folder. This probably only works for epubs. Overdrive is by far the best epub reader I have found for Android besides the built-in reader in the stock Nook firmware, and it's free. (There are a couple other promising epub readers, SlickPub and Fabrik, but I don't think either of them are where they need to be yet).
Aldiko, and Mantano but I like the layout and shelf view of Aldiko the best.

Nook Reader
I actually like the Nook Android app for its clean user interface, easy look up function, choice of font sizes, search, etc.
However it can't be installed on CM 10 or 11 directly from the Google Play store... not compatible with the device. But I copied it from my phone and side loaded it easily. Why is that? I don't know. Other than the irony.

I have moon reader right now as my go to reader. I'm looking for a E-reader that can read all sorts of different file types. Does anyone know of a book reader that can read everything from comics to E-pub's and everything in between?

Moon reader has been my favorite on both the HD and HD plus. It gives you the best customization.
+1 for Moon reader.
I like the fact that it can synchronize my reading position over multiple devices.
