What's with the no help with my problem? I'm a smart man, and I rarely seek others for help because I feel I'm more capable then the rest. But when I hit a wall and I can't find my way to the other side I seek for the answers, and what a waste I should have known that to be. This big and wonderful community of very smart and talented individuals is a let down. I'm not trying to insult any one. I'm just making it known that there are people who truly seek help, and I know the answers are here, now it's a disgrace to see someone very patiently and generously seeking help only to be practically ignored till the thread slips down deeper into the forums to be lost and forgotten FOR GOOD. Here's my real question, what does it take to get answers? I'll be searching else where and on my own to figure it out by myself, then I'm going to do the opposite of you all, and I'm going to share my knowledge with someone who needs it just as bad as me. Because I am grateful, that is all.

Ya'll can say what you will, I may see it but I wont be reading it.
Good day!
Totally agree! Even though they no the answer they tell you to search there forums for 3 hours!!
do you have an issue? Maybe I can help, ill try anyway

I've already searched these forums and a lot of other places on the internet. I haven't found anything of help, if you think you could help me here is my thread with my question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324844
I learned a long time ago to never be disappointed means to never expect anything, from anyone. Well it's a different case when there's a forum dedicated to QUESTIONS, and ANSWERS. I expect the knowledgeable ones who can help TO help.
@imsohawker: You need to be aware that there are over 4,000,000 members on this site. Of them, the Streak community is a tiny one, which is why it's located in the Low Activity and Legacy section of the site. Most Streak owners do not have AT&T, being in Europe and Asia. Of the ones that do have AT&T, you are the first I've seen that has a "pay as you go" plan. So if you aren't getting answers to your questions it's likely because your situation is so uncommon that no one here has any practical experience that can allow them to answer it.
I did in fact attempt to help you out, but there is only so much I can do, simply because I am not on a "pay as you go" plan through AT&T. I'm sorry. I wish I could be more helpful.
@markdexter: Be aware that when you created a username on XDA Developers you agreed to abide by the site's rules. The number one rule on the site is search before you post. If it's abundantly clear that the poster did not search before posting, e.g. asking how to root the Streak, you will get told to use the search engine. Usually I am nice enough to provide a link and mention using the search engine the next time, but for repeat offenders, I report their posts for violations of rule number 1.
While XDA members are rather knowledgeable people, at least for myself it's more gratifying to find out the answer yourself than it is to have it spoonfed to you.
Very well said. I know the statistics, and how low on them I am. I was hoping I could of at least had someone with the general know-how guide me, but as you said I'm the first you've seen with a "pay as you go" AT&T plan. Sorry for the outbursts! I was in the wrong to assume with such large numbers of knowledgeable folk that I'd get lucky enough to have someone fall in my lap with the answer I was looking for. Again thanks for the attempted help, which is better than none. Much appreciated!
I would get a new sim card to start, I also think it has something to do with pay as you go.
also have you tried changing the network type? On your dial pad, type *#*#4636#*#* then press phone information, then at the bottom, theres options try wcdma only, or gsm only Just go through them, worth a shot

I think it may have something to do with my pay as you go too, the first android phone I had bought unlocked (LG GW620) I had problems with my phone telling me my SIM wasn't inserted, I believe I resolved the problem but I forgot how, that was 2 phones ago but I know it would still occasionally tell me to insert my SIM, and my previous phone (unlocked sidekick lx) I had problems with losing service a lot, though sometimes it still showed I had service (bars) but I couldn't send messages or anything. So I'm almost concluding it's my SIM being a pay as you go SIM and it has restrictions maybe? I did however call AT&T's support and they have changed the IEMI of my sim to match my dell so I was hoping that would fix my issue but it hasn't, also I just tried the WCDMA only and that didn't work, and I think I already played with these settings but not through the dialer code. I'll try the other but I'm doubting it, but everything's worth a shot. Thanks
All I did was buy a cheap 10 gophone and used the sim outta that and activated it online...did the same for t-mobile....i was switching between the two cards to see which service I liked better..maybe try that....i had no issues what so ever. Btw my phone was orignally att locked which I got unlocked.

I read your original post as soon as you wrote it, as well as your others and found it interesting, but not having a clue as to what the problem was I did not chime in.
You may try a more general forum on XDA, as this is probably not a streak specific issue. Also, I have found the forums on At&t wireless's website to be surprisingly helpful.

Hello all,
I have a 8525 from a Cingular store. How can I tell if it is a HERM100, 200 or 300? What is the difference between them? How do you turn on 3G on your phone? All mine is doing now is Edge since upgrading to WM6. The only connection mine has is Media Net. How can I plug my phone into my laptop and not have my phone switch from Edge to nothing? I'd rather have the phone stay on Cingular network even if plugged into a laptop.
Any ideas?

I think you should check out HowardForums.com and/or the Cingular Forums. The questions you're asking show a lack of understanding of even the most basic aspects of the GSM network the phone uses to operate.
Seriously, just learn some more before you hurt yourself and/or your phone.
But, the_passenger is totally right.. the WIKI is YOUR FRIEND!
what about this simple infobox?
it is in Settings and Device information, or you can move device to bootloader and you may see the model in very first line of tri-color screen.
and what is the differences? in button layout and plastic cover, HW seems to be the same on all models, on some hermesĀ“s is not video call button (like on HERM300 from T-mobile instead HERM200 in Cingular). check this - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Versions
I just switched from Motorola phones to a Pocket PC phone 2 months ago. I've been modding/flashing/hacking Motorola phones since 1998. HoFo has 1 in 100 that will actually help someone out while the other 99 just flame the person. Cingular forums just suck and they always have.
Flashing a phone cannot hurt your in any shape or form. Just as I have been putting on my site "By downloading these files you agree that this process might ruin your phone and we cannot be held liable."
On another note, instead of padding your post count and spamming the forums with "$2.50/minute LIVE help" posts, just skip them if you actually do not have anything that answers their post. My questions were only after a few weeks of being in the shadows reading posts and doing 5 other flashes on my 8125 and 8525. My issue seems to be more WM6 related which is why I might switch to another WM6.

Ok I think we set off on the wrong foot, so I will try to answer your queries, but I highly recommend you read the wiki as it will give you much better understanding of the general stuff we do here
So you have Cingular 8525? : To find out which model it is goto start>settings>system(tab)>Device information. Tap the identity tab and it will display your details.
For 3G (aka UMTS) to work firstly you need a 3G sim card (aka a USIM) and 3G coverage. The device will AUTOMATICALLY switch between 3G(UMTS) and 2G(GSM), to get the best signal. When you sync with the PC via USB it will connect to the net via your broadband connection or dial-up (whatever your pc uses). But with the latest Activesync(4.5) you can choose to allow wireless comms when connected.
Finally sir, it is VERY possible to permenantly brick your device if you do not follow the correct procedure, even bad luck (a dodgy USB connection or power outage when flashing) will ruin the device temporarily or even beyond repair. This is why we insist users read the wiki and read through the threads before flashing anything.
Hope this helps.
I am not sure why a lot people get angry when asked to read the Wiki. I must have read the Wiki at least a hundred time by now and almost every time I read it, I find something new that I over looked previously. Anyway the Wiki has been my friend from the days of the Wallaby.

Thats great you know alot about moto phones, but thats irrelevant here. *Most* of your questions could have been answered by yourself had you taken the time to even play with the phone. Or even taken the battery out and looked at the label, you would see the 8525 is clearly marked HERM100.

He did offer real help, there is also a point to having what he had on his signature, only a complete idiot will pay him that money to help fix their phone, its only there to encourage noobs to read and search... judging by your original post gave us the indication that you are a noob and would be better suited at hofo or forums.cingular.com ... All of the questions you asked here has been covered on the cingular forums, i know, i was once quite active there till i told the mods how lazy they were and how bad of a job they did in controlling the content, needless to say i was banned for being right.
Also you may want to utilize the search function, its located in the upper right hand corner, it has the word "Search" on it. also dont forget to RTFW... it can be found here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes <---- i provided an easy clickable link for you since you dont like to read or search.

Yes, it can. On these phones you can damage it beyond repair. HTC needs to replace your MAINBOARD to fix it! Warranty does not cover bad flashings of the roms on here.

I was being helpful. I was trying to prevent you from having a $400 paper-weight. If you don't want to read and you just want questions that have been discussed here ad-nauseum, I suggest you kiss your phone goodbye if you start flashing roms without any understanding of what you're doing.
As for my charging money.. It started as a joke on IRC; although I have provided paid support to someone. I charged my normal (not $2.50/min) rates based on the time I felt it should have taken to solve the issue. He was quite happy with the service. I don't push my paid support - it's just an option. Much like it's an OPTION for you to be a ****wit or to actually read the posts and the wiki and become a contributing member of this forum. I make my living supporting Windows and Linux networks, etc.. Everything I do can be found out for free, or from books. But, sometimes people don't want to spend the time learning everything about their computer networks and would rather make money doing what THEY do best (whether that is being a doctor, salesperson or lawyer). In this case, there are people who probably want WM6, but, don't want to do it themselves. It's just an OPTION. That's what makes this site great.. Lots of OPTIONS.

8125 (the Wizard) is NOT as touchy as the 8525. You will REALLY destroy your phone if you flash a bad radio or a bad rom. You can REALLY **** things up in a bad way. So, don't listen to the stupid elf because I have the audacity to offer a paid service in addition to the free help in the forums. But, don't come whining back to us complaining when your new phone dies.

no, it can hurt; if you write a corrupt IPL or SPL to the PDA, you're utterly ****ed.
other ways to **** the device involve restictions placed within the regular bootloader, mostly involving corruption of the CID or invalidating the OS.
Let me preface this with the fact that I'm a G1 and Nexus owner and I have lots of experience with dev work on both of those phones. This help request is for a friend of mine who lives thousands of miles away, so theres not much I can do hands-on. Yes, I searched, couldnt find answers.
So my friend has a CDMA hero (sprint). Unrooted, completely stock. She had it for a month and "all of a sudden" she couldnt make or receive calls anymore. Stupidly, she took it into bestbuy (where she bought the phone from) and had them try to fix it. Fail, of course.
to me, it sounds like she somehow deleted her APN list or turned off her radio. the help i'm requesting is the following:
-first and foremost, how to boot a stock hero into recovery and execute a wipe.
-second, if someone could point me to the sprint APN list, that would be awesome.
-third, I would greatly appreciate it if one of you could point me to instructions to check the radio status (on/off).
no need to really baby talk the issue, but my friend is computer/tech illiterate and I can translate instructions. however, she has NO desire to root (i know, odd, right?) so rooting the phone to attempt to solve the problem isnt an option.
quick responses would be awesome. she's been living with the phone this way for 3 months now and helping her fix it in an hour would earn major brownie points for my next visit. cheers.
Suggest you move this to the dedicated Hero Sprint forum - they are much more likely to know

Okaaaaay.... let me rephrase that.
What would be the advantages of updating from 2.2 to 2.2.2?
Disadvantages? Bugs?
Let me rephrase it then, plenty of threads about 351 and other new roms for you to rummage through. Better get cracking. I find 351 to be a bit buggy but others love it. People here won't spoon feed you so use what has been posted and make a decision.

Im with you, buddy. I am totally ok with 2.2 and see no need for 2.2.2 if its primary update is the stage home screens. I have Launcher Pro Plus and dont care about the Dell Stage screen. I also heard that oo.voo constantly runs in the background. I dont need another back end process to constantly manually stop, so that it sill autostart again. Some have said sound quality issue. There suppose to be enhanced email functions but I bought Enhanced Email from the developers site directly and it works fine. I am not sure what Gallery updates are but im ok with the current.
Hey William, if you come across other items, pro or con , let me know too. Thanks, bud.
Remember some time ago Google removed some 50 apps from the market because they had a malware payload? The main difference between 2.2 and 2.2.2 is that Google has closed the exploit which allowed that malware to work.
To me, that is a compelling enough reason to upgrade. However, if you don't, every so often Google may force feed you a malware removal tool. But, as said earlier, it's your choice as to whether you want to upgrade or not.

A bit of a smartazz aren't you?
What good is a forum where you can't ask questions without feeling stupid?
I don't do that on my www.CorvetteC3.com forum that I founded and run, that has been around longer than this one at 10 years. We start off new member telling them that there is no such thing as a stupid question and if it has been asked before, so what... ask away, the members here are friendly.
I've been here over a month now and getting tired of seeing this kind of attitude telling people to use search instead of answering the question or leaving a link. If that is the case, we really don't need a forum do we?
I've found on my forum after awhile, new members learn on their own to use search,
I wasn't talking about you, Rico or Strephon and thanks very much for your replies.
Hey no prob, William. I agree with you. I dont pay those sort of responses the time of day. You are correct, some reply as if its their personal site. Strep made a good point for updating when it comes to the Google malware update. Thanks for this sting.
About the only time I will actually tell someone to go search is when they ask the same question on multiple threads in the same forum, just because the threads happen to be related. To me, such behavior is childish.
So, I have done it myself. I'm not proud of it, but at the same time cannot change my frame of mind. I simply don't have patience for stupidity, and spamming the message boards simply because people aren't helping out as fast as the poster might want is stupid.
William, for the most part the people on this forum are decent. You and I seem to have managed to find that one person that rubs us the wrong way. In your case, it's someone being a smartass. In mine, it's someone providing a solution that actually ISN'T a solution. It almost makes me wish there was an ignore list feature on the site.
EDIT: Found the ignore list feature on the site. *LOL*

I think it's rather odd that you have your own forum where you say people eventually learn to search yet here you didn't bother doing so. Did everything you learn on every other forum before, escape you right before coming here?
I bricked my phone last week yet I didn't make a thread asking what to do. I searched and searched til I exhausted all the solutions. I had dozens of threads to go through, you have a few at most. mine was a much more urgent matter than yours, but I knew it was covered over and over.
Maybe its cause I used to get flamed for not searching when I was younger but now when people do that I just see laziness and a "I'm too good to search" attitude.
Not saying thats whats happening, though I dont know you so I cant say.
Either way, apologies for offending you.

Yes I did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for with my particular question.
Searching XDA for "2.2.2 difference" gets you this on the 3 or 4th page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050077&highlight=difference+2.2.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13278734&postcount=20
Googling "2.2.2 difference" gets you pages worth of info.
http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-android-2-2-1-and-vs-android-2-2-2/
http://androidandme.com/2011/01/phones/update-your-nexus-one-to-android-2-2-2/
Since 2.2.2 is a platform specific update and not device specific update, you didn't have to limit your search to just the streak section.
Thanks for the links. I did see some of those. In my post I was more after personal opinions of those who have went from 2.2 to 2.2.2. Wanted to see their thoughts on it.
As for the members on my Corvette forum, most of them are between 40-60 and many don't know how to search or are too lazy to, (retires you know).
I'm 58 and a bit lazy sometimes myself.

Actually, both are beneficial, a couple threads/posts were very helpful and searching here and googling found more answers. Combine them all, you get a lot of different views. I like as much info I can get.
The update isn't a true 2.2.2 update. I received/did it a couple of days ago. it's still 2.2, I was told that there must be some a typo or some such on the web page, but my phone still shows 2.2. FWIW the battery seems to last a bit longer, but the 3G reception doesn't seem quite as strong. YMMV

Did you get notified of this via your streak?
I am coming from a DX where TBH modded the NV files to use the stock hotspot application.
I was wondering if there has been any devs taking a look into this...
And by the way I DO NOT want to start a ethics war on tethering or not tethering...
Thank you
There's been threads with lots of useful information (and posts) within the last couple of weeks. You'll probably get more informative answers looking at those then asking people to repeat what they already said.

I have skimmed thru quite a few recent posts regarding tethering and I find none of them useful in answering my question. I see that many of the posts go on to get a smartass remark or two from someone who has not a clue about how to answer the question.
Kinda like what happened in this post.
So I would like a linky or a better answer.
Ohhhh, if you want a smartass answer, I could do far better....
That was only my polite, "look around the knowledge base because it's useful" answer that noobs seem to find insulting anyways.
If I really wanted to be insulting, I would tell you to RTFM . I help plenty of people with legitimate questions, feel free to look at my post history and see for yourself.
But really, I do agree the ways people say it tend to be rather blunt.
However, the overreactions to even sensible replies to search around are also just also just as bad, since there doesn't need to be a new posting always and some people just don't think before they make one and reminding them to do a little search I think helps (if done in a not so overly rude way). My initial post was not a slight against you but a word of advice that people will do what you just said, insult you and give you non-helpful replies.
IDK what kind of solution you are looking for, but there isn't a magical "Verizon will give you free unlimited tethering legitimately without extra cost option if you ask them really nicely" or a "I'll come right over to your house code and compile the most amazing tether app in the world that actually boosts your LTE speed beyond what Verizon gives you and does your homework when it's idle."
Instead of taking the defensive because someone asked if you looked around a little, perhaps clarifying your question in a way that shows that you actually searched (i.e. "I noticed there was this method to tether or that, but I don't really like those options") makes it clear to everyone you gave it an honest shot and also motivates people to want to help you more
It also keeps things on topic so you get the answer you want faster. Just for future reference.
I searched the TB forums and didn't really see anything on the subject. I only found
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082585
Maybe there's more in the general Android forums, though I didn't find much there either. I could just suck at searching.

I recommend using advanced search and "search by post" not by title. You'll get more relevant info that way. If you happen to be an opera mobile or desktop user, you can make a custom search from http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?f=940, by hold pressing on the search bar for that page for mobile or right clicking for the desktop. It will then add it to your other custom searches for easy access
Anyone of the links above mention this?

No, because it's a different phone that was never fully rooted and it's the only phone mentioned, but it's worth talking about since it's the first threat that comes off as more than words (though it could still be regardless). Verizon can tell what you're doing far easier on it than other phones because you don't ever have full control of it on the droidx. If there's any phone that can detect if you're doing unauthorized tethering, it's going to be a phone that's locked down. People who buy moto get what they pay for.
Though someone did mention it somewhere in some topic on the thunderbolt forums about the droidx having ways to detect it, but it was just glossed over.
I never used stock hotspot app because I never even try apps with monthly charges. what's the point of checking it out and potentially getting hooked when I'm absolutely certain that I will NOT pay monthly charge for that. I'd rather switch back to T-mobile
with that said, I'm using wifi tether as I write this. it took me a while to configure it because it wouldn't work out of box but it's free and well worth the price!
I've been busy lately and havent kept up with this...so Verizon shut down the free tethering apps, like "wifi tether for root" and others?
Not to throw this thread off topic or anything I just wanted to know how you got the H and # key's confused in the thread title as they are quite far apart. Again, sorry to everyone just kind of a weird mistake.

Seems the Thunderbolt running gingerbread is the same way, although I reverted back to froyo for the time being so I cannot confirm what this article states.

Doesn't CM7 provide an integrated tethering solution? That should be undetectable to Verizon.
If they are baking something into the gingerbread update to detect tethering apps (pun not intended but welcome), it won't find its way into the CM7 code.

I doubt anyone on a T-bolt can confirm since we're still getting free hotspot. Unless they are allowing official hotspot use but blocking tethering apps.
I suppose that would make sense if they're trying to get people hooked on the feature.
Yareally thanks for the links. I don't know if you own a xoom but I have yet been able to get the search feature to work in the xda site. Maybe you could find a link for that as well and post it for me.
I am not currently at home with access to my laptop where I have full availability to use the advanced search feature. So thanks again for making these links available in ones easy to find location.
As for the #.. I use thumb keyboard on t#e xoom and it is t#e result of a long press on t#e h key. I think you should be proud if yourself for being able to figure out what I meant to type.
No offence to anyone but some times when you all jump on people asses there may be extenuating circumstances.
Sry for your troubles. But I hope you rest good at night knowing that you have helped one soul find some good info.
The search feature using a web browser or using the application for xda? I've heard the application has lots of issues for anyone period with the search and since many seem to use it, it's probably the reason for lots of duplicate posts. If you mean browsing it on an internet browser, that seems new to me as far as I know.
I've never used it, I just browse using opera mobile (with a link to the thunderbolt forum on my speed dial and the search tied into the search bar next to the url bar).
Opera mobile still has an unresolved issue with LTE being throttled (max of like 150KB/s), but it's not a deal breaker for me at least compared to using the stock browser in terms of getting to where I want to go quickly and its tie-ins to the desktop browser.
No worries about the thread. Internet makes it hard at times to interpret someone's replies anyways since words can be taken many ways, lol.
Okay this seems very movie like but here it goes.
So every since this month of march when someone calls me somebody will completely hijack the call and block the person trying to reach me. Usually it is a guy who is just laughs or someone giving me a bogus name and then I hang up. They have been harassing me. I hate it. I want to just develop an app or find one and monitor my call traffic to see where it is being interrupted. Does anyone have any info on this issue or how to fix it. I am a computer nerd so I would be able to follow complex directions. Maybe I should just answer my phone with a Peter Griffin soundboard and mess with him. lol
Sounds to me like the guy has your WAN and cloned it on his phone. Is yours a refurbished by chance?

No it is not. This is really freaking me out.
your best bet is contact your service provider as there is really no way for you to design an app that can "sniff" your phone calls and see if someone has intercepted your calls. your provider can however look into that and give you any information related to it, including if someone else is possibly using your ESN and cloning it on their phone, but i don't think that both phones can really be active at the same time anymore, i know it used to work, but not sure anymore. sounds like possibly your number or the route to your phone is somehow messed up at the cell tower or the datacenter handling the phone traffic. again, best bet is to call your provider and alert them of what's happening.
do you happen to have bluetooth enabled on your phone? perhaps someone nearby (i guess they have to be within 30 feet of your phone) has connected to it that way and could possibly be messing with you? that's about all i can really think of, hope it helps!
