Best MoPho Setup? - Motorola Photon 4G

Honestly I either suck at searching through forums or there honestly isn't a whole lot of development for the photon at the moment :/. I've been trying to find a buddy of mine an awesome setup for his photon. Ive been romming my droid 2 for over a year going from Liberty to Apex to CM7 etc. overclocking and undervolting. this photon has so much more potential but where are some roms with active development??? I don't mind if they are blur-based if they feel like AOSP? But overclocking kernals and unlocking the bootloader? Should we aim for that? And is cm7 development picking up? or even miui? What are your setups for this monster of a machine?!?! and advice is appreciated

Okay, so for starters, you've got a good phone to use as a base. There are not AOSP ROM's and MIUI will come after we get CM7 booting, which is still in the works. We have a kernel right that that is OC'd to 1.3 ghz which absoluetely flies, it's great, I personally run the Home Base ROM myself. It's a legit one, but it isn't up to date with the latest OTA from Sprint, so you may be best going with the SBF file that is 198_7. So I'm Rooted/Unlocked Home Base ROM 2.1 with update 4.2 and 1.3 Kernel.

First Time Eris Root Recommendations

I own a droid, and have already rooted it, running CM6, got it down pretty alright. So I'm not all that new to rooting. But my sister has a Droid Eris, and I was looking to root that for her. I plan on using the 1 click rooting app mentioned here, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend any ROMs and/or Kernels that I should use? She's not much of a power user, I'm mostly trying to speed it up for her and get rid of stock apps and such, so any help would be great. Thank you in advance

Kaosfroyo is really great and the other two froyo roms on here I've read great things about them too I've just only used kaos and I highly recommend it
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Id suggest a frayo rom there's a few going around I personally recommend kaos frayo V32 very fast and stable, very great build. Its overclocked to 710 out of box.
my rom is pretty great also
You could also use mine, that is if you want a rom that is stock but with speed tweaks and themes.
I would also suggest one of the froyo roms. Tazz Cyanogen Froyo is really smooth and fast. Of course I think this would be a great rom for anyone.
I'd suggest running jcase's PlainJane rom and check out the new BFS kernel.
I just got a warranty replacement phone, rooted the old way and put PlainJane on there (I had been running PlainJaneT2 which just adds support for A2SD but that only complicates upgrading to froyo later) did a nandroid backup then flashed that BFS kernel and ran a linpack benchmark right after scoring near 2.5 without overclocking (PlainJane barebones absolute stock 2.1 with SuperUser and OC support)
I suggest PlainJane because it's simple, you can get moderate EXTREMELY stable performance gains, get rid of bloatware, run wifi tether and no one would be the wiser that the handset was rooted. Your sister can then confidently explore the app market, slowly get into changing some settings, try a new launcher and at some point then maybe she'd have some interest in froyo...
As great as the Eris Froyo roms are you should face the fact that they're all intended for moderately android savvy users or at least novices with aspirations to learn a LOT more on their own. Few users will ever root their phone to begin with, even fewer will go the distance learning command line for abd and the fact that you're rooting her ERIS is evidence enough imho that you should be putting the LEAST complicated MOST stock solution if you intend to do this for her.
If she walks into a verizon store with her phone she'll get no help, If she loses ANYTHING can't use something she wants to for any reason it'll be YOUR fault and she will VERY quickly forget the hours you spent tweeking her phone to squeeze out a couple more MFLOPS that she'll honestly never really use.
that's my take

That was my thinking as well. I've looked through the forums a bit, and I'm assuming you're talking about these:
(Just realized I can't post links, would it be any trouble for you to post links to the ROM and kernel threads you're talking about so I can verify?)
Just want to make sure we're on the same page?
Thanks to everyone for your speedy replies and help. I'm definitely looking into all these, see what might work best and try to explain to her what might work best for her.
I am running CELB and loving it. I had issues with kaosfroyo and forcecloses.

Jcase Plain Jane 2.1 is a good stable ROM and agree with psilocybenine's comment.
Another good stable ROM to check into could be Sense-able 3.1. I play around and try out all the new roms that come out but this one is my everyday one for it stability. (plus I like the simple blue theme). Have not had any problems.
good luck

Thank you! That seems perfect. Another quick question though, of those two (PlainJane and Sense-able) which is most like the standard Eris UI? I want my sister to have as little trouble as possible when using it

My bad, sorry about that, I'll remember it next time thank you. As for the KaosFroyo is that one a fairly simple ROM? again, trying to think of my sister here and ease of use
All plain jane does is add oc capability a d superuser rights. Senseable has speed tweaks and apps2sd and some other tweaks. Both are sense based and are like stock with added root fun.

If you want something as close to the standard Eris UI, then that might be Plain Jane. Sense-able has some bloatware removed and other features but not to far off once you get it set up. Just read the threads thoroughly. Sense-able has a couple of add -on fixes (updated the dialer and a text input fix).
Sens Based ROM all hands up for Plain Jane. Fast, stable and sense. I would highly reccomend it as far as sense based rom. As far as Froyo my choice definitely goes to nonsensikal =)

its AOSP(vanilla) and the others mentioned above are sense based, which is how the phone comes so if you want a stock feel i used plainjane but you might want to try them both out mabey one suits you better. as far as ease i think they are all pretty easy to get used to.

not all are sense based bro
As much as I love the Froyo roms, all of them have small flaws that a not-so-power-user would quickly get frustrated with. The camera issue is one of the most notable. She would have to take a picture, then close the camera and open the gallery to view it. If she tried to preview the picture from within the camera, her phone would lock and she would have to pull the battery. If she's cool with that, put her on a Froyo rom. They're all pretty great!
If she wants pure stability and only wants to download and use apps, put her on a 2.1 rom with Apps2SD. Sense UI eats up a lot of the Eris's speed so I would recommend one without it. Plus it's like getting a new phone when you swith from Sense to non Sense based rom. Conap's ELB is my personal favorite but some of the others mentioned in this thread are also pretty stable.

[Q] What is the current status of custom roms?

hello everyone. I hope to get the X2 soon. I see that their isnt much for this phone so far but i was wondering how far people have come along with unlocking the bootloader and making custom roms before i actually do get the phone. Either way its a kickass phone but i might get the bionic because it has 4g. i dont really care about facetime but 4g would be nice. One thing i have noticed is that my friends X2 is scoring 2343 on quadrant standard compared to my dads bionic who is scoring 2168, kinda wierd. but anyways hope i do get this phone and can help contribute to the developing side of things!

roms
i think sand pretty much nailed it.... eclipse has been getting the most attention from it's developer though and is ahead of the curve as far as the workability of the rom goes. i liked atrix just fine, but it has more blur on it, and clocked quite a bit slower on my x2. the eclipse developer has even created 2 versions of eclipse. one with most of the blur removed and one that still contains a touch. hope this helps.

advice from everyone please

so ill start off with please dont go tell me to read google things. iv been on this site for awhile with many different phones i read a lot. now to the topic. iv had my photon since it came out i love it and it does all it needs to but i miss flashing roms and getting that "new phone" feeling when you do. iv been running stock on the photon since the start with no real reason to flash. mainly because the loss of hardware or other things on our roms. dont get me wrong im very happy and thankful for those who put hard work into this bad boy every day. now im getting tired of it and i want to flash just wondering in anyone thinks one thing over the other, i dont mind unlocking but i do want reliability and a bit a flash to it. i need my mms, my camera, video. can anyone suggest whats doing the best on your own photon rom, kernal, locked unlocked. i do understand that each phone is different and acts different with different set ups. i just wanna head in a good direction and not mess with the odd stuff. thanks always xda members for making my phone more addictive then crack with your wonderful hard work. thank you so much. happy holidays to everyone and their families.

I mean we have CM7, MIUI, and about what 4 I think modified moto roms we have themes.
There is alot of roms in other phone forums and most of those are just themed roms
You have to flash a kernel and play some tegra games
I'm running MIUI now

thanks ill check it out.
Some people like stock with just a kernel flash. Some like it simple and bloat free like skinny. Everything you listed works on all of them except maybe miui for the moment. The most stable and complete is skinnyrev2-test3, because its based on 198-7/254-5. Cm7 and miui are awesome and a must try(im partial to cm because i helped in the beginning and was there when the very first version hit the g1, but i like webtop). Magnifier is great too. Its 154 based but its compiled from source i think. Correct me if im wrong shabby. If moto actually updated their source i would build from source too. Jokerstock-test1 was source built.
My advice, titanium backup and flash them all. Few days on each, with updates you should feed your flashing needs. Plus webtop is soon to be flashable.
Unlike other phones we got pretty much everything you would want fully working. Enhanced stock roms with better battery/performance. Cm7, miui, and roms in many languages. You can find my kernels in 6 different countries. Each with local roms. All blur based roms can be flashed in bootstrap with little edits, giving you 4g. Pretty soon im going to help cybik and miui guys get a bootstrap method up with a dual boot option.
Lets the flashing commence

no is not from source. he just was under the impression that newer firmwares wouldnt boot with custom kernels so he went with 154 hes working on updating everything to 198_7 as i continue to yell at him about it

Oh, i just assumed 154 would be source built. You must bug him harder to update to 198-7 then.

[Q] razr development

Is it me or is the development on the Droid Razr/VZW Razr is extremly failing?
It's coming. Just be patience
If the bootloader gets unlocked will that open up development?
Well for my experience having a Droid 2 development wasn't halted by the locked bootloader...
Even though most of the roms were moto blur based the user still had the option to change to a different rom were here there us only one...

The difference there is the original BLUR ROM that was on the D2 was HORRIBLE. Probably one of the worst implementations of BLUR ever.
I had a D2G, and it felt like Motorola dropped their pants and BLURRED all over my phone....it was ****e.
For the RAZR, the BLUR is really background. It's the best I've seen, as far as implementation of bloatware, and resources not being heavily taxed.
I've basically just rooted, frozen the bloatware, loaded ADW launcher, and I'm REALLY close to a CM7 build, in terms of performance and features.
We're also so close to ICS & CM9 being available that it doesn't make sense for a Dev to put a ton of work into creating a CM7 port on this phone.....what would that REALLY gain?? Maybe a bit of De-odexing, but that's about it, and even then performance is not really increased. So what would you like to see?? MIUI or Aphex might be nice to see, but again, what's the true benefit vs the work that would go into it??
Once CM9 hits officially, and they figure out the touch screen issues in ICS, I guarantee you'll see Dev's forking the trees of those ROM's and you'll see more development come. Right now, you can grab some pretty killer themes off a couple different forums, and you'll still have one of the best performing phones on the market, with probably the best build quality out there.
I remember my D2G, I was very unsatisfied with development as well for 2.5-3 months, but when CM7 finally started to get Alpha builds....the flood gates opened, and I ended up with 4 different ROM's to try in a months time period.
I settled on CM7 Rev Numbers, and was stoked with my phone up until the time I lost in Singapore.
After that experience, I'm totally OK with being patient until CM9 can port, because stock GB - bloatware on the RAZR is AWESOME.
Right. We have CM9 on the way from dhacker29 (and DroidTh3ory?), which could lead to like ICS MIUI and OMFICS or something lol. Nitro is trying to deodex so he can start on Eclipse... We're not dead, we're just in the middle of a weird patch.

I guess so..
the only thing we have to do now is wait..
Just an FYI, one of the dev's on another site just broke the code on the touch screen drivers, and is working this weekend to re-write them in ICS, so we may see an "alpha" version next week......MAYBE.
That was the last piece, as the radio's were working, but the touch was still not.
There's also the boot times, but those seemed to be tied to the touch screen.
Seriously, if this hits next week, you're going to see some big announcements soon.

No ROM based on 2.3.X will run that much better (if at all) than what we have.

[Q] CyanogenMod for the Rezound

Does anyone have any idea if there will be CM9 support for the HTC Rezound? Do we have any Devs that want to be on the CM Team? I came from the Eris Community and as far as getting CM support, no one wanted to do it for forever. I'm not complaining, or anything, I'm just curious to know if anyone has already made steps to become an Official Device.
I'm working on a CM7 port, but its my very first attempt and I would say that so far its much more difficult than I thought, and I have been inundated at work so I haven't gotten to do a lot on it in the past couple weeks.
honestly, now that I've played around with ICS a bit on my Rezound, I think I'm going to dump the CM7 idea and start working on AOSP ICS / CM9. Stock ICS is just WAY nicer than I expected... and its obvious that Google took a lot of queues from CM7 when they built ICS. You can use Scott's Senseless ICS ROM right now and get a lot of the feel that CM7 has..
Having CM7 on my OG Droid I am really hoping that CM9 will be available for the Rezound.
