Enter recipient in SMS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok , this is embarrasing and totally driving me insane, and I cant seem to find anything on it.
I have a T-Mobile branded S2 and I can't figure out for the life of me how to manually enter the phone number to send a text message to someone.
When I tap in the space that says "Enter Recipient", my keyboard does not pop up at all!! I can choose my recipients from the phone book just fine, and reply back to any new phone numbers great, but how in the world do I enter a phone number there?

Click "enter recipient" area, your keyboard appears(swype or samsung - depends on what you chose), press "sym" on keyboard, it changes it in numbers, type in the number you want. That's it.

Ps: check if you have selected a certain keyboard (settings-language and keyboard-select imput method-choose one), maybe that is the problem why it doesn't pop up.

How to send sms --- please help !!

Hi
I have written in numerous postings now and still has no idea how to work the sms. I am connected to Vodaphone and has received a couple of sms messages with no problem in my inbox. I have checked the network settings and it showed a call centre number which looks ok and certaintly I have received messages indicating that it is ok. However when I tried to send a sms, I could not even compose a SMS message. In the "New" command on the today screen, there is no sms message to select though I have the option of E-mail message there. I tap on a contact and "Send SMS" and there is just no response at all. Wonder if some kind soul could give me a detailed step by step way of sending sms thru the O2 XDA which I got but connected to Vodaphone?
Cheers
Vic
Hi
Sorry if you have already tried this.
Just go to new email. then press the the down arrows on the upper right of the screen by the subject box and change the service to SMS
then it will attempt to send sms's instead of emails.
HI
Thanks for reply. I tried tapping on "New" then "Email Message" and it goes straight to Inbox with my 2 sms messages that I had received displayed there. I tapped on the upper right hand down arrow and it showed "Sort by" with 2 options- From "Received date" or "Subject" and no option for SMS. Is this correct ?
Anyway- how does one compose and send email messages?
Cheers
Vic
Click on Inbox, then in the Upper LEFT of the screen you have the option to select ActiveSync (basically e-mail) or SMS. Select the Inbox section of the SMS part. You will then be able to select New from the bottom Left of the screen which will allow you to compaose an SMS. Remeber to click 'Send' and not OK to to send it!
Hi Matt,
Thanks for reply.
Got as far as the inbox option of SMS; it showed the 2 sms messages which I had received so far and when I click on "New" as instructed, nothing comes out of it.
sms
try pressing the green telephone handset button. press tools, press sms, enter number at the top, enter text, then send, if you click on tools, then choose options you can click for delivery reports.
Thanks for reply.
Pressing "Send SMS" at the phone menu give no response at all.
I seem to think that there must be an activating step for using sms; I have checked the call centre number and all that and everything is fine. Somehow I just could not compose an sms message. Not sure if I should hard boot the whole damn thing to return to factory defaults to see if it reactivates the sms mechanism. One question is will hard booting relock my XDA which I have already unlocked with the XDA manipulator?
Cheers
Vic
Hi all,
Just an update to the problem I had no more- a cold boot restored the full functions of the sms service and I still do not know which files were missing or corrupted.
Thanks for all help with answers anyway.
Cheers

Sprint Touch Pro Dialer

This dialer is really aweful considering there is no smart dial..
plus you cant tap the contact and have their numbers popup so you can choose which you want to call.
these are basics of wm and i dont have these features. I love the phone and it's features, but smart dial is extremely important to me and im sure to others as well.
is there something i can do to replace the dialer?
help if you can
Thank you
There is Smart Dial on my Sprint Touch Pro. The thing that bothers me is everytime you touch a name under the dialer it automatically starts calling them. I would like it to go to the contact so you can pick which number to call.

You have to click on the input bar at the very top of the screen before you touch a name. This will search instead of dial.

Use your D-pad to scroll through the numbers, press Left or Right after you see the name.
Possible threadjack...
...How do you input extra numbers to be dialed after the phone number, i.e., to dial a pause and your password for instance).
I thought it was "," but that didn't work. And for short numbers like traffic "511" plus the highway, I put in 511,4951 and it converts it to 511-4951.
^^ the letter p is for pause and w is for wait ^^

Too bad you can't make the input bar a little bigger, I find it hard to tap the input box without using the stylus. Most times I can tap everything with my finger but that input box always messes me up.
I use the Sprint Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) feature almost exclusively now to dial numbers from my Contacts. Regardless of what Sprint calls it, it's Microsoft Voice Command and it works quite well. There's no training and you don't have to record voice tags. It just works
It even works well with a Bluetooth headset. Just tap the answer/call button on the headset and tell your phone who to dial. If there's more than one number for the contact, it will ask which one to dial. I rarely take my phone out of the holster to make a call.

Yeah, I dial everyone with it unless there's too much background noise. I LOVE it.
You can also tell it to start programs by saying "Start " then the program name, OR, you can tell it to play media files by saying the same thing. You can even ask it for the date and time and your battery level. I never even really knew how good it was until I used it. Not one review I read talked about it.
i dont think you guys understand what i am saying... i owned the xv6800 for 2 years and the i760 also... smartdial does work on the touch pro but when you hit the number with your finger it calls that number.. with the xv6800 and i760 you tap and hold and all the contact info comes up in a little popup and you tap the number you want to call..
as for the dpad.. the dpad takes alot to get use to..it's too easy to make mistakes using the dpad.
i brought back the original dialer through the reg and it still did not help. htc has completely taken over the os with their proprietary software. not too smart on their end. i have also disabled the touch flo and you get the same ugly white dialer.
Just read!
And the answer you were given in this thread is that when you see the number in your call history, you use your d-Pad to scroll through the numbers in your directory and when you see the one you want you hit enter and your phone will "F"-ing dial it. Can you not read?

In my dialer, it has a Contacts button in the lower left corner. If you use that, then it works the way you describe: click a contact and then you can pick which number you want to use. Doesn't everyone have this?
I agree with the OP. I would like to have smart dialer access Contacts so that I can quickly pull up someone's full contact info and then decide which number to call. I also try to avoid using the D pad because it isn't 100% accurate (or at least not for me) and I have had trouble dialing the wrong number or person inadvertently.
Trying to use the current Contacts option isn't very finger friendly for me.
Update - I just used Advanced Config to turn off the dialer skin, and now I have what I was looking for. At least with Sprint, the basic dialer has smart dial that allows you to tap a contact and it brings up the persons contact info, rather than just dialing their default number. I'm going to give this a try for a while.
I use Spb's Mobile shell to do as you describe.

QWERTY stuck on compact, wont change to Full
I have been doing some tweaking to my phone and after adding the black dialer, my QWERTY that displays with messages is the compact and not the full anymore. I have tried to change it in the Today section but it keeps reverting back to the compact style. I have not been able to locate the cab file to delete it. Any help would be great, thanks I should specify, I am using the touch pro

Message (SMS) was send from which Nr.?

How do I see from which number a Text Message (SMS) was send?
Here is the problem: A friend of mine wend abroad and is using a different mobile phone number. I saved the new number in the contact file under "Home2 phone". Now, if I recieve a text message I actually dont see were it came from, do I?
(Even after clicking on the Message it opens the contact but shows the mobile phone number, not the one it was send from.)
Thanks for anwser
When receiving the message, all you can see is the name of the sender.
When you click on the contact, it shows you only the mobile phone number because, theoretically you can receive sms messages only from mobile phone numbers. A stationary phone number cannot be used to send sms
Torque77: Wrong. You CAN either send and receive SMS from fixed lines in most EU countries. And Rose can handle it without any problems.
Gipo: Just hit Enter when the received message is selected. Contact card will open with proper sender's phone number highlighted. BTW in threaded messages is enough if you just simply hit "Reply" - it will be sent automatically to correct number. (In fact, every number - even different number of the same contact - creates a new thread).
EDIT: OOPS, you're right. It just shows the card without highlighting the number (having a look I saw a last call, not the message). Then only way is direct reply in the thread then. Nevertheless, it's simple and reliable.

Sorry then. Guess Moldova is waaaay behind and this chapter.
No problem... Just an reminder. Nevertheless, you can't be sure, if it is a phone able to receive it (again - some operators forwards SMS as a voice message then).
At least at the moment you already know, that Rose can send SMS on ANY phone number stored with contact - if you have somebody e.g. with more mobile phones.
Yes, if you just choose a contact in the list and select "SMS" by right-left arrows, the mobile number is used. But if you hit Enter in Addresse field in empty SMS form, select an user, Rose will show you all available phone numbers for the contact and is able to send the message at any of them.
thanks guys

[Q] Trouble sending pound (#) key in contact or speed dial

Has anyone noticed that when you put a pound key (#, aka number symbol, octothorpe etc) in a contact's number, it doesn't work? I.e. the # dtmf tone is not sent when you call the number, while other tones are sent properly.
For example, I set my voicemail number to *86,,5555# (the 5555 part is just for illustration, and should be filled in with the voicemail pin)
Whenever my phone calls voicemail, it says "Sending Tones 5555" but it doesn't mention the #, and I can tell that the # tone is not sent, because the voicemail system waits a few seconds after the password is sent, which is exactly what it does when I dial it manually and neglect to press #. When I do press pound manually, the system continues immediately without a pause.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or has anyone else been able to sucessfully send the # key?
hi, i haven't had this happen personally, but would puting space between the password and the # give the sytem time to receive it.? don't know if it will but i never had this happen either.hope this helps. hp
I don't think you can add spaces, but I added a comma (which indicates a pause) after the pin. That didn't help. Thanks for the suggestion though.
##7764726(spc=000000) and *#*#4636#*#* are hidden menus so the # may be handled special.
I actually noticed this today when I was trying to get through a damn automated menu. It kept asking me to hit the # key after things but kept telling me "Invalid Entry". I literally used every other button, to include * during the call and everything else worked. This is no bueno!
What version of Android and what Rom(if any) are you running? I am on 2.3.4 w/Eclipse v1.1
Thanks, AtLemacks, It's nice to know someone else has experienced the same thing (misery loves company I guess).
I'm using the same android version and ROM that you are. But I'm pretty sure I had the problem even back when I was using using P3Droid's Rooted Gingerbread without any ROM. I don't remember if I tried it when I was on stock Froyo.
I didn't have this problem before, I call/go through that menu fairly often.
did anyone figure it out?
I am suffering the same problem. Did anyone ever figure out how to send pound sign #?
Try a alternate dialer like Dialer One or the like.
Edit try voicemail *86, the # key skips to the next msg on my Milestone x2 port.
Found a solution
Found a solution, not sure if everyone can use it. I am using Motorola Photon with Sprint. My solution is to create a contact like this for google voice dial out
15125553010,,2,3235551110,#,,,1234,0118521234567,#
and it works for me. I can now use a direct dial icon on my home screen to call. The trick is the first pound sign. It needs comma before the pound sign and the three comma behind it.
Anybody else find a work around?
I am glad to hear that I am not alone, but a little dismayed to not see any answers to my days of searching for a solution. Has anyone else come up with an alternative work around? The direct dial method above didn't work for me.
Using a Galaxy S i9000 rooted with paranoid android 2.52 (although I did have this same problem with other mods as well)
Thanks!

OMG! Can't enter numbers during a call

As you can see from the thread title...frustration is setting in. I can't enter numbers using the keypad during a phone call. Example:
I call insurance company
Company asks me for my number
I input the number using the onscreen keypad but there is no "tone" sent.
Is there a setting somewhere? I'm freaking out!!!

One of my major gripes with this phone is that it doesn't play the DTMF tones when I dial. I hate that gurgling noise it makes. I haven't had any trouble entering conference codes or other numbers once connected though. Are you saying you don't hear the tones or they aren't recognized on the other end? A lot of times you have to enter a '#' at the end of your numbers, are you doing that?
Nope. It's like the other side can't hear the tones. Annoyed!
