Hi guys,
I'm looking to get an android device for my OH. She's not that tech-savvy (though she knows a bit as my geekyness rubs off on her), however I simply don't trust stock firmware so I'll want a custom ROM on it. She will be using the phone as a phone/web browser/camera/games. What's this device like in terms of usability, battery life etc? Does the 800mhz cpu cause lag at all? If I can get it for under £100 is it worth it, or should I fork out the extra £50 for a X10 Mini Pro?
As for the CM firmware, is it gingerbread?
Sorry for the semi off-topic post but I don't trust phone salesmen and the xda community know what they are talking about =]
Hi there
if you're talking about x8 then the processor is 600mhz, not 800.
For me it's really a question of what kind of games does she like to play because for things like email, web and some other random stuff X8 is just fine now that we have a flash player working too.
About games i can say that i have some real troubles trying to play some of them, even overclocking (my processor only supports 710mhz max) and most of the time we have to take a look on web to search for a modified version for our X8.
If i can give you a suggestion i have a friend at work that bought almost for the same price a Samsung Galaxy Gio gt5660, take a look. It has 800mhz processor, and has upgrade from samsung to 2.3.3 with flash player support.
hope i helped you.
If you use the overclock module from gc 7.3 you can reach 768mhz,and if you use the new 2.3.7 gb version you can set the frequency from 768 minto 768 max

Thanks for the info, its greatly appreciated. Basically shes currently using a iphone 3G thats donkey years old with no power button or volume rocker. It's slow as moses. She plays games from the market but no 3d racing or online rpgs, just puzzle games and minigames (rat on the run, angry birds etc). I'm looking to get her a phone thats quite nice but not really expensive. The main features need to be decent speed (no lagging on phone menus like with the iphone) and it must be future-proof (which is why I want a phone that has active custom development).
I can pick up the X8 for £75, the Galaxy Gio seems to be around £120 with the X10 Mini Pro at £150. If I can't find a good deal I might just give her my hd2 and buy a new flagship device xD
tl;dr Thanks for the info!

Hello Guys ,
I am planning on buying Samsung Galaxy Ace. I want to make sure whether it is true that Galaxy Ace has the same processor that LG Optimus One P500 has , but it's just overclocked in case of Ace ?
Not overclocked buts its the turbo version, thats by default 800mhz

Are you sure ? and if Yes, is it possible to overclock Ace's processor in the future ?
check pdadb.net's database, the processor of ace is speciafically turbo version with 800mhz as default.
i think we could overclock it if custom os kernel is out, which russell is working on
dont knw about about processor... but my cousin has lg 500 and my bro galaxy ace... and they both agree wid me galaxy ace is far more smoother and better than lg 500... and a medium sized screen is just a charm...
Has your cousin flashed his LGO1 with any custom ROM ? I have heard that "Megatron ROM" for LGO1 makes it perform much better than how it performs when it's stuck with its stock ROM and enables it to handle/run much resource consuming games and apps !!
Well, I, personally haven't used it nor have seen somebody using it

hi bot9011,
custom roms for Samsung galaxy ace are undr development (ie. Darky rom, villain rom and Cyanogen). As of now we have a light weight Villain ROM, and believe me it is very responsive. So if you think about the future when Overclock kernels are built, it can be overclocked to 1GHz! With all these top class ROM and a better hardware, this phone has got the punch.
LG P500 has been around for a year now and the development has evolved pretty well, and in the current scenario new phones are rolling out at an alarmingly fast rate, so it would be disastrous if you buy old phones. You will repent later, believe me...
With all these said the decision is yours to make.
And congrats in advance on your new ANDROID!

If your concern is to have current hardware this is not a good device for that being it uses an arm11 processor. I have not seen anything to indicate this chipset is any different than the standard msm7227 but with an increase in clock speed and most likely voltage too.
As far as the optimus is concerned the additional ram is far more valuable than the extra clock speed in my opinion. Not to mention that the optimus is far more prevalent which is the reason the developer backing is much better.
I'm interested to see if there is any hardware differences and what kind of oc clock speeds you guys achieve.
Thanks a lot for the reply!
Well if you are saying that LG O1 has obsolete hardware and Galaxy Ace is any day better than it, I would like to say that you're pretty wrong !
Both the phones sport the same processor , that is , ARM11 V6 and most of the upcoming updates will be for the phones equipped with V7 and v7+ processors (That's what a senior member on this website, named silvertooth ,told me )
And Yeah, it is true that Ace's processor is said to be in turbo mode so that it can tick at 800Mhz without any issues! But I don't think it is possible to further overclock Ace's processor and even if somebody managed to do it, the phone's battery wouldn't even last for a day
On the other hand it's quite easy to overclock LG O1's processor to an extent of 750Mhz without adversely affecting it's battery backup! It has even got 512MB of RAM !!
The main disadvantage of LGO1 is , it's screen is a dust magnet! Dust easily gets accumulated under it's screen and as far as I know, LG hasn't rectified the problem yet Otherwise I believe it's a pretty good phone that you can get for 10K INR!
Waddya guys say ?

Dude,
If u have an issue with budget get the LG phone, if not, get the ace i am not biasing you. All I feel is, (note:I have seen the LG P500) ace has better looks than LG P500, and I personally like good looking phones and also the 5 MP camera with the LED flash is way better than the LG camera(I like taking good photos and good videos 640x480). the 3.5" screen is pretty good for video playback and I prefer touch buttons than the HW button for the back and menu functionalities.
All these are my personal views.
Goodluck on your buy!
Flash Player
hi, guys! is it true that our ace will have soon flash player?!
Qualcomm’s 800MHz MSM7x27™ mobile processor will be the first to enable Flash Player for the mass market segment of smartphones, allowing handset manufacturers to offer richer Web-based multimedia and graphics experiences for casual games, applications, videos and other Flash-based content.

though ace is the far nore newer launch.. it wud take sometime to it's development phase to flourish.. on the other lgo1 is getting older and thus u can expect soon people getting over it and moving to new launches... well thats just my observation and experince.. i may be wrong..

it CAN but we are not sure if samsung will implement it on our device.
I was wondering if this would be a good trade. I am currently running Miui on my Captivate and its all tweaked out...but I just want to know if the ease and customization of rooting/modding/etc compares to that of the Captivate. Pretty much I just wanna know the pro's and cons of the phone first hand from daily users/flashers...as well as average resale of the phone. I love my Captivate but I think it would be cool to have something new to play with until the SGSII is released...thanks in advance!!!
The biggest con is the dual touch is buggy so it sucks for games..
Also there isn't much development compared to other android phones.
I appreciate your response. I enjoy hacking/and modding...I looked at the dev thread earlier and concluded the same...still might give it a shot though..

gpu very weaker than captivate.

hey well you would have the ipod touch for games...
it is a decent phone, and from the sounds of things the bootloader might be unlocked very shortly!
Like I said, just be aware of the small issues, but I mean it looks nice and as long as you are informed and still feel up to it, then I say go for it.
I use my phone probably more than my laptop...but you do make a good point about having the touch. The other thing is like I said I'm gonna buy a SGSII when it is released so I could just resell them both and that would pay for my SGSII in itself...thanks you guys I really appreciate your responses...

The only reason I'd go for Gingerbread is the features, Froyo is much more stable in my opinion.

I never looked back after flashing mik's CM7. As I see it, FroYo reached its peak performance with some ROMs + kernels here and the only way to improve on it was to go Gingerbread.
IMO Gingerbread looks better and performs better than Froyo.

well, I used to think so, but it is not that simple by just looking at the Quadrant score.
try to play games such as "brothers in arms 2", froyo stock rom is much smoother than the cm7 port. I'd love to stay with cm7, but sometimes it just does not perform well.
even if you look at Quadrant score, cm7's 2d fps is less than stock froyo. why is that I have no idea.

Thats just the same that i feel
If you want more quandrant, don't install any of the apps that run in background consuming more ram resulting in battery drainage
I too prefer Froyo, whether its stock or froyo modded roms
Gingerbread is better.
just by looking at the changes in the android versions i would say gingerbread
So far, I'm using Aga ROM, and Gingerbread. I know I'm a newbie. But I think I never looked back to Froyo, ever since I'm using Gingerbread. Frankly, I also think my Ginger is much more stable, less battery usage, compared to my Froyo.
Have also tried these ROMs.
- openOptimus (Froyo and Gingerbread)
- Devoid (Froyo)
I would say gingerbread. Surely we can trade in more performance for a little less battery life.
totally gingerbread
and i suggest DJ make a poll
For a while i have shifted to stock froyo till i take it to LG CSC, need to get the power button checked
@XeactorZ :- sure, when i am online via my Laptop
@sweetnsour :- thanks for the link, i am changing my preference, i vote for GB

all the gb users want is neocore score, if we were able to increase the neocore in froyo it would make a big difference because it offers more battery !!!

Personally I mostly prefer froyo because it gives me more battery juice which I need it at work. I don't give a damn about benchmarks. Since it's really smooth for everyday use (internet (+ tethering), a bit gaming, music), I couldn't care less about +-5fps.

HI!
I was casually browsing the internet, just like people do, when i came across a link for faked chinese phones, trying to see if there was annoyed customers saying they would sue the phonemakers because the phone they just bought could only just support angry birds, but it lagged alot. But then i came across this: http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.G...3G_GPS_WIFI_Quad_band_Smart_Phone_Black-45950
I quickly looked down the specs list;
-Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHZ CPU (same as our beloved P500)
-802.11B WIFI (also the same)
-Adreno 200 GPU (same)
-480x320 screen (same)
-GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900mhz
-512MB ROM
-256MB RAM (unfortunately not the same )
-Same Size rear camera, and also a front camera
If your take a look at the page, you will see that next-to-everything is the same.
But, as a bonus, it packs an almost-complete iphone user interface complete with launcher, status bar, ect..
If a anyone gets their hands on the phone, or wants to try and port the rom to our LG, or just wants to test it if somone Tries to port it, post it in this forum.
Hands on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzYk9_aPodg
The ui looks great, and if we had a system dump we could extract the launcher and make some rockin' cm7 themes too!

Performance is a subjective term..
It varies from person to person.
Well, games do lag on our phones beyond a point and I've seen every android device lag after sometime of use while doing heavy multitasking, etc
Android OS as such needs to undergo a lot of development .
Well, you do have to pay a price for the seamless customizing option it gives us..

Well yes, not all apps are compatible with it. Just think like your phone was a computer/PC.
You install windows xp which is themable and can become like windows 7 (i think transforming it to windows 8 would make it less efficient.)
So you have the lightets and most beautiful version of windows ever on your pc. But still windows xp can only use directx 9 and cant use internet explorer10 (but anyway who's using internet explorer nowadays.). Also a lot of software is not compatible with it.
So you install windows 7. Windows 7 will give you an amazing collection features, apps and such but they will perform slower compared to windows xp. (We are always talking about a computer with about 1,3~1.5Ghz proccesor)
So you must choose between these two: A lot of compatible apps and slow speed OR excellent performance with lower app compability. Well you choose. Gingerbread or ICS/JB. It is up to you and how you are going to use your phone.
Also with the lemon cake (if i rember correctly) version of android there is going to be a huge performance increase because it is going to support phone with ram of about 512MB which is what our phone has. And with a fully working kernel 3 Performance should be increased [email protected]!

You're right. Each one of us has to choose what it wants.I think I will wait for the Lemon Cake.Hasn't our phone only 384 MB of RAM?

actually it is 335 for gingerbread
340 for ics and
384 for jb *as you said
Well because of the fact that i am afraid of unlocking my bootloader (no money to fix/replace the phone from any damage caused) i cant tell you about custom kernels. But our phone has in general 512mb of ram. Generally some memory is taken by the kernel for some functions for example camera/gpu. Camera 720p has been removed from jelly bean so thats why it has more free ram.
That happens on every phone i guess.

Thx for explaining me.Now i understood. But why does the gingerbread work smoother than jb if it has less RAM available
Oh,and i have another question(about CSR Racing). When I am on stock gb or ics when i press to shift the gears it goes late(doesn't matter if i oc or not).I mean like 3 sec late. But when i am on a custom rom it changes the gear perfectly. Why is that happening?

Well it seems to be lighter and probably I guess more optimized. Ram doesnt matter for performance in this case. Gingerbead was made to work on devices with even lower ram thats why no problems excists. Also my guess is tha Jb can work on even less ram smooth enough. Ram in android is mostly occupied by cached processes which are "useless" for the Os to operate correctly.
Anyway about csr racing i know nothing ).
