Goldcard really needed for my phone? - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to root my htc legend.
But first i have to downgrade it since i have build 3.15 running on android 2.2.
For all downgrading is a goldcard required. But i have a simlock free unbranded legend. Is it then still needed? I cant make a goldcard because the site is down.
Will my phone brick if i try to open crackin.bat to downgrade, while i dont have a goldcard?
What guide should i follow without a goldcard?
Thanks!

My Legend was unlocked and unbranded when I got it too, and I needed a gold card.. Crackin.bat shouldn't brick it, you'll only get an error message at the end I think because of the wrong sd card.

i found it easiest to use the goldcard tool from
Code:
sites.google.com/site/roothtchero/goldcard-2
for the legend you'll have to select MMC0...

Hi, what your describing is network lock rather than root lock, from my understanding, regardless of network lock, it's only the root lock you have to worry about so unless I am mistaken, you will still need goldcard to flash NON-stock rom.
I personaly was lucky, I got a three (suppied by vodafone) legend there was no branding what-so-ever, no voda or 3 bloatware, I havn't tried it on any other network, but, at the time I also had vodafone mobile broadband which also worked on my phone, (it didn't work on my wife's 3 branded Desire HD).

Noobie questions (sorry!) Please help!

All,
I downloaded the original Cingular/ATT Rom, just in case, and bought Sprite and backed up my settings. I downloaded SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe and ran it (from my PC, is this correct?). SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe seemed to run okay, and gave me the message "SDA Successfully unlocked, Please Reboot SDA Now!". I rebooted my phone and did not notice a change (I assume I should?) I ran the Rom update for WM6.1 Standard, which opened up a DOS-looking box that stayed there forever and did not indicate it was doing anything. After just over an hour I disconnected my phone and rebooted it, no change.
My questions:
1) Do I run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from my PC or from the WM phone itself?
2) Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?
3) What does CID Unlock do, and do I need it?
Just to review, I have a Cingular 3125 with WM5, and I want to go to WM6.1 Standard.
Please help! Thanks!

You were supposed to run Jump SPL on your phone which puts it into a special bootloader then run the update utility should run correctly. I personally prefer the MicroSD flash method myself.
Jump SPL?

Thanks icecube57!
I know that SPL files were copied to my phone automatically when I ran Rom updater, but I don't think it ever launched. I am really confused about the CID unlock. I read one post where it says I have to do this, and another that says for Cingular Roms you don't need to.
Also, you mention the MicroSD flash method - is there a post here that explains how to do that? I would not mind trying it if you think it works better. Please help!

If i dont say it someone else will. Please use the search function.
If the utility didnt automatically launch the Jump Spl program then navigate to the root of your phone using file explorer start it manually from your phone and it will put the phone into bootloader then try running the utility again. Thats how i had to do it with my phone
Thanks

Okay, that's fair, thanks. Can I get an answer on one more thing? I did look in the forums, in the Wiki ,etc. on this - I am still confused on what CID unlock is. I really don't want to brick my phone. When this worked for you, was this on a Cingular 3125? Did you have to CID unlock?

What you are talking about permenantly CID unlocks the phone which allows you to flash any rom. Instead of being stuck with carrier specific roms. What the JUMP SPL does is loads a specially modified bootloader that temporarily fakes the Update Utility into thinking your phone is CID unlocked that way you can flash any rom without going through that long complicated process in making it permenantly CID unlocked. I have a 3125 myself and flashes all the roms in this forum fine with the Jumps SPL Bootloader method.

Downgrade a G2 to root it?

I've been trying to root my G2 for quite some time now, but I've come to the point that I think it's impossible. Tried the 1-click method, didn't work, goldcard method also didnt work.
The version on my G2 is 2.73. In order to downgrade, I need a T-mobile rom version 1.76. When using a non T-mobile version I get the 131 (customer ID) error.
Is there something I don't see, or is it really impossible?
The goldcard method worked for me, I also had the annoying T-Mobile 2.73 rom.
Just make sure that you follow the instructions very carefully, make sure you use only the one sd card all the way through (my mistake, thiking it would be quicker if I used two cards. Yes I can be that stupid) as the goldcard is for the sd not your phone.
Thanks for the reply. I created a goldcard again. This time, I get a new error when trying to flash my G2 (error code: 140). Does this mean that my goldcard is still not good, or do I get this error message for another reason?

G2 Touch Stock RUU?

I've been trying to root my G2 Touch and have used the goldcard method.
I can only find the latest tmobile RUU (2.73) which can't be rooted!
Is there anywhere the stock (1.73) tmobile RUU is?
Regards
Signed update zip is here>> http://www.4shared.com/file/133081624/c5e35fa0/update-hero-t-mobile-1761106-s.html if any good.
Is there a reason for you to use goldcard on your G2? On mine (got at end of last month), it was the original unlocked 1.73 version, and it had an unlocked bootloader, allowing me to use fastboot to boot a custom recovery image (AmonRA) and then do a nandroid backup before flashing an update.zip
Presuming you need to use goldcard, I would have thought that a generic HTC version would have done. So long as it is 1.73, I think it would work fine, since the purpose of the goldcard (IIRC) is to ignore the carrier id and let you install the stock HTC ROM onto the device. From there you could root and flash the recovery partition to allow installation of custom roms.
So in conclusion-
-You might not actually need to use a goldcard, but if you do,
-Give the generic HTC 1.73 ROM a shot
BTW, I haven't personally tried this, so hopefully someone who knows a bit more about this can confirm if this would work, but I reckon it should. If possible, take a nandroid backup first, but this might be a bit difficult if fastboot doesn't work for you.

worked perfectly for me
You're using a tmobile G2 Touch right? I'm sure I tried this and it brought up the [131] customer ID error lol.. I'll try again though Thanks
yep i am, long story short i had a problem with and i had to apply the official so i could send it back to tmob for repair and once i got it back, i started to follow the video done by lockr and i got the [131] customer ID error when trying to use stock (1.73) ruu, saw the forum post use that ruu worked perfectly
I still got [131] error...
Where did you find the stock (1.73) RUU? The only one I can find is the 2.73, which is my current one.
i didn't use the 1.73 ruu, i used the 2.73 and i used that ruu i'm sorry that i can't help you :-(
Arr okay no worries I'll just wait until the 2.1 rom is released and hope that has some holes in! Thanks for trying
How about one of the first 2 RRUs from this page?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
None of the WWE RUU's seem to work... Only the tmobile one :/
Sounds like the goldcard isn't working properly
It is what makes any old RRU work, as it disables the Carried ID check which means only T-Mobile RRUs work for you. Seems strange...
Personally, I'd try making the goldcard again.
Yea I made the Goldcard twice on the same SD, so maybe its the SD card thats the problem... I try using some others I have somewhere
Iirc, the default micro SD card (2gn) that came with the phone works correctly. I've had a think and I reckon the goldcard is definitely the problem, as a working goldcard will accept any try file, such as the one I referenced before.
Give that a shot and if you have trouble, just try other cards until it works, but I reckon the stock card is your best bet for now. The HTC 1.73 rru should work after that.
I never recieved the stock 2gb card as I bought off an eBay seller...
But lucikily I had one lying about and created the goldcard and loaded the WWE RUU sucessfully, Thanks for your advice!

help in rooting 3 mobile hero

i bought my phone unlocked from the 3 mobile network UK. i
it had build 2.73.771.62 CL#80033 release-keys
first question, can i root this as is? many guides say to downgrade but none of the ruus seem to be compatible. cid errors.
second, which ruus can i downgrade to anyway? it has to be an original 3 mobile rom right?
third, which was the first available 3 mobile build.
last, im i screwed wrt rooting?
EDIT:
adb devices lists my hero, however, fastboot doesnt. this means it cant be rooted as is right?
does the CID error mean i didnt do the goldcard method correctly? i was worried when i had a letter in my cid generation after cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
H3G released their first Rom this week. Prior to this were pre installed.
To root yours follow Goldcard method or this one>>>
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613
Treat it as though you have flashed rom currently running in your Hero.
im more comfortable doing the goldcard method.
using goldcard, is it ok to have a letter in the cid? cos i have one and fear thats the reason mine isnt working. we're working with hex so alphabets are ok, ignore.
also, which ruu do you recommend i use to downgrade.
btw, what do you mean by "treat it as though you have flashed rom currently in you hero" you mean like i have upgraded it already?
thanks.
Yes if you are following second option. But ignore what I stated. Personally I am more comfortable with non goldcard therory simply because you could be near complition and getting frustrated only to find that your cd card is at fault.
There have been several cases of sd card let down.
mine seems to be letting me down too. ive used the stock and some other samsung card. cid errors still. btw, what allocation size im i to use to format? or is formatting with the phone ok.
ended up trying flashrec .. backup failed.
installing the patched recovery image didnt work either, new hboot.
---------------
so i cant install the patched recovery image because of the new hboot
which is because of the build im running on, so my only option is installing a previous build to get the old hboot
but 3 mobiles earliest build is 2.73.771.62 ... which is what im using
so i have to install a build from another network, hence need to goldcard ... which seems to be failing
---------------
^^ correct above if im wrong ^^
i think im going to cry. i cant use my phone until i do this cos i cant imagine setting everything up again.
what do you advise?
I think according to post #23 it is possible to root.
Anybody successfully rooted his/her Hero from 3 network? How did you manage to do it? Possible to give some guides to member arimozuki??
Thanks.
OMG! finally done ... thanks for all your help!
i was randomly looking at my friends 5800, asked for his 8gb card, plugged in, goldcarded and downgrade worked!!! w00t. but this was a week ago; needless to say, my phone is not a virgin anymore ... alot of rape
thanks much.
I know the thread is old but I would just like to add the Hero on 3 can now be rooted using Androot, which allows you to avoid the goldcard method. Was able to root, flash a recovery image, backup and put a new rom on with minimal fuss

[Q] Error 131 (When trying to downgrade-definitely NOT a goldcard problem)

SOLVED IT!
I suppose this is what happens when you're not too familiar with what you're doing. It was a goldcard issue. I realized that the initial tutorial that I was following made me reverse the CID in a wrong way - and that was why I could not downgrade using RUUs non-specific to vodafone.
Did it now though! I hope this is useful for others having similar problems!
Hello,
First of all, I am definitely a newbie so excuse me in advance for possibly missing an obvious link.
I'm trying to downgrade my htc legend from 2.1 to 1.3 so that i can eventually root it and put cyanogenmod on it.
while using the RUU, i run into Error 131 saying that I should use the correct RUU. I have searched and searched and seen that people wrote that this is a goldcard issue. I have tried doing the same thing with another card which is definitely a successful goldcard because it has been used for this same purpose before.
I notice that this might be because it's a vodafone phone (in UK). The phone itself is unlocked. Could vodafone have something to do with it and if yes, is there a way to bypass that?
Can someone please please help me get past this error? Before then I get the 171 error but if I just exit the RUU and unplug and plug back my phone, it works fine.
Thank you!
Nice you fixed it! I think you mean downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1 no? G1 had Android 1.0 then 1.5,all other devices have ahad 1.5 or above
I'm basically just doing what the tutorials I've been following have told me. I'm pretty sure I have to downgrade to 1.31. I thought I had solved it but I was just not paying attention and I had downloaded 1.32 instead so I couldn't root the phone.
