[Q] Ebook Reader Fonts - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like the default ebook reader due to its real book like feeling, the turn page animation etc ..
Only problem is , Can the font be changed to something better.. Or can anybody suggest a better reader for the tab.

I personally like FBReader . It needs some tinkering with settings but it's my favorite . It can read books straight from zip file . For font changing I really like to use absolute system root tools apk https://market.android.com/details?id=com.canvs2321.absolute.system&hl=en
P.S. They claim it is not compatible with any samsung device but i run it on mine .

Did anyone ever work out a solution for this? Since the ICS upgrade, the standard font on the Samsung ebook reader is really awful. I'd love to be able to install other fonts - I can't understand why this feature would not be standard in fact, at the very least to be able to choose a serif or sans-serif font.

I was wondering is there any kind of app that will let me read any book on my phone please help
I really haven't been satisfied with any of the windows mobile readers I have tried, but someone has to be able to make a nice reader for multiple formats that has reflow and page-turning with gestures.
The only one I can stand to use is Adobe Reader which has reflow (has to be enabled in registry for recent versions) but only supports PDF files and has no gesture based page turning. You can scroll with your finger but not 'flip' from page to page which would be far more useful. Other readers are even less elegant, although they tend to support more ebook formats. Adobe Reader LE is installed with most (all?) stock Touch Pros and most custom ROMs.
Basically, I cannot answer your question -- I'll join you in asking it though...Where oh where is a good ebook reader for Windows Mobile?
all of the good ones I've used are pay ones.
You can of course use Microsoft Reader for pocket pc. There is a free word add-in that will covert your .doc files to .lit files. Copy them over and away you go. That was the best format available for quite a while. Recently I have discovers mobireader. It reads txt files and .mobi files and is much easier on the memory than MS Reader. I then also found an application that can convert .pdf files, .txt files and most other common formats to the .mobi format for easier reading. It is called calibre and is awesome! Hope that answers your questions.
I recommend MobiPocket Reader, as well. The program is free and versatile. I've had no difficulty finding books in that format - it seems that this is the software used by Amazon.com prior to the Kindle. It does everything I wanted it to... I'm currently reading a Dean Koontz title and it's better than a paperback. Easier to hold and when my eyes get tired, I can make the print bigger.
best one out there? ubook by far. awhole 15$ and u get everything but .lit and .pdf. they have a free nag version, and i think they have a free one. i have used it since i had an ipaq. great app, full customization available. get it. u wont regret it......oh. and u can read the files when they are .zip to save about 50-70% of the file space.
I use mobibook as well,
reflow, resize, page flipping by gesture or dpad.
I d/l ebooks in any format, open them with my laptop version, select send to mobile device and it auto-converts.
oh, and as mentioned it's free
ubook
i've been using ubook for at least 5 years now.. in fact now that i think about it, i'm still using whichever version i downloaded 5 years ago! it is usually the first thing i put on my pda when i hard reset.
i'll 2nd what the other guy said about it - it reads .txt, .doc, .html even inside zip files. has a few skins.. the interface isn't exactly standard but it's not complicated either.
eReader
I've been using the WM version of the eReader (www.ereader.com) software for several years and lie it a lot. You used to have to pay for the "pro" version, but now it's the only version and is free. Very customizable (theme, font size, margins, etc.) and works great on my TP.

Essential apps

Had my Streak since Monday after finally deciding against the HD2. I've been a winmo user for years but didn't like the idea of being stuck with 6.5 for another 18 months.
I had built up a huge selection of fave apps for my HD and was reluctant to let some of them go, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for everyone's essential apps for the Streak.
Having only had the "phone!" for a few days, here's a couple of apps i'm liking so far:
1. RockPlayer - play avi files and more.
2. Google Navigation - although comes shipped in UK.
3. MyPlayer - BBC iPlayer.
4. AppKiller - although this is the only task manager i have tried so far.
5. EsFileExplorer - again the only one tried so far.
6. XDA app - nice interface and faster than using the browser.
7. ColourUp - i love editing photos and this is pretty cool.
8. Google SkyMap - works brilliantly.
9. Swype - only just started using this, for me it's brilliant.
Ok, there's my keepers for now, how about yours? I've not really found any great games that fit will on the screen yet although i'm liking Winds Of Steel.
Same as yours really, but would like to add Astro file explorer - great for installing apps outside market. And if you like reading as much as i do Laputa is a awesome ebook reader with ipad style bookshelf and page turning and loads of online books.
Tried quite a few games and at the mo playing Zenonia little rpg ala zelda which is a nice enough. Game Boid is a great emulator for all those classics. Mazeoid is a free pac man game runs great on the streak.
Im experimenting with different keyboards, the dell one works great but the numpad throws off the whole symmetry. Ive tried smart keyboard which is quite nice with lots of skins, but i found it slow so went back. Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Gonna add a new one as of yesterday....kindle reader.
just bought a couple of books and woopee for some reason you can buy them at american prices. Lot cheaper than the UK store/mobipocket etc.
Oh yeah and Rockplayer...rocks...will probably be my first 'purchased' app once it get's released (I've not had a need for anything else that requires paying for yet.)
oops. forgot I don't play many games but Bonsai Blast is really addictive and fits the screen great.

Great, was looking for a decent ebook reader for the ebooks i already have, I also think the numeric keypad is a dumb thing - not thought about as it forces you to hold the streak lob-sided to type, as you, still looking for a decent alternative.

Yep, kindle reader looks lovely, but can't get it to work with the ebooks i "bought" from other sources. Will give the bonsai blast a try. Cheers.

Nice find, buy them cheap while you can
Gave Bonsai Blast a go and i agree looks great and a pretty fun and adictive thanks.
Kindle looks good but like Guest69 i have a collection of ebooks i need to be able to import, maybe this will be possible later...
Also found a few good widgets. Htc smooth calendar (other one was buggy) looks great, matching the dell theme better then the default and shows 3 appointments. VolumeWidget is on my home screen, gives you 3 buttons for preset volume profiles.
Finally the Zedge app is like the app store of ringtones, has search, preview and install functions. Theres also a wallpaper section, but i havent tried it as i have made my own seamless sets like the o2 wallpapers (cut up and resized some high res dual monitor wallpapers) ill post some here when i get a minute.
My favorite book reader is aldiko, and it has limited support for importing books as well as long as they are epub format.
Hi all,
Well I've had my Streak now for a little over 3 weeks and have now flashed my first custom Rom which comes Rooted and with Superuser permissions plus has allowed me to remove from the Rom the apps i had no need for.
So here are my installed apps in no particular order.
Astro File Manager: can be used to install apps that come as apk's as opposed to from the market
Barcode Scanner: easy way to install apps form QR codes or just reading Bar codes
3G Watchdog: Monitors your data use over 3G you can set your allowance and it will monitor and alert you
Live Calender: Will bring up upcoming Appointments on your Home screen
F1 Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with F1
Moto GP Pocket 2010: all you need to stay up to date with Moto GP
iSyncr for PC: Easy transfer and sync of iTunes to your Streak
Google Sky Map: Map of the Stars and Planets
Engadget: Widget with scrolling updates
SystemPanelLite Task Manager:Shows you CPU and Memory use
myPlayer: BBC iPlayer
ShootMe: Screen Shots for Rooted devices
Speedtest.net Speed Test
Rock Player: Plays DivX Avi and many other formats in great quality.
Co Pilot Live: Sat Nav with POI'S and Speed Cameras
Gentle Alarm: Great Multiple Alarm app with some unique nice features
Seven Push E-Mail: Real time Push E-Mail with full folder support
Cloud List:Great: shopping or other list app also on line lists that can be shared with others
Tapatalk Pro: handy tool for posting on Forums
TVCatchup Mobile Live TV Streaming with lots of UK channels
Fring: Skype and IM chat app includes Skype Video chat
Superuser Permissions: allows rooted apps permission
Boot Explorer: File explorer and more for Rooted devices
Root Booter: Easy Normal, Recovery or Bootloader Reboot options
Boot Manager: Control over various options and apps on your device
Swype: simply the best keyboard and typing experience ever IMHO
I should mention although System Panel Lite is a task manager that's not what I'm using it for as it also shows CPU and Memory use along with all your Active applications and Inactive cached applications. Personally I'm just not using a task killer or killing any apps at all.
Wow having now made this list i can't believe just how many apps i have installed so far just as well the Streak comes with 2GB for installing them on.
Marc
is there a good Weather app out there
Is there an android application for windows live mail? I haven't found one.
Diane
Sent from my Dell Streak using the XDA application.
@ Dogman, Mate whats the name of the Barcode reader you use thanks
Hi lufc
It's called Barcode Scanner and it works better then any I've ever used before literally as soon as you frame the QR code it identifies it and gives gives you the option to open the browser which actually opens the download store with the app ready to just hit for download. It still amazes me very time i use it to download a new app just how fast and simple it makes the whole procedure.

My FAVORITE app is Swype. A month ago they were letting people download the app again and I got it for my Nexus One .. I loved it because for some reason I was having a horrible time typing .. When I first got my Streak I typed on it for about 15 minutes and then downloaded Swype again and that is ALL I ever use. I made it the default program for any text and you can always type letter by letter if you are having problems with a certain word. On YouTube there are several GREAT instructional videos on swyping from the maker. I am pretty sure I am getting faster swyping than I was typing on my iphone.
Double post...
Thanks for the barcode scanner tip Marc, its real fast and accurate definitely a keeper.
ROFL @ "XDA_devs is rapidly becoming the McDs of the winmo world, sadly full of rude chavs demanding crap immediately.. "
As for swype, I gave it a try but I wasnt impressed, guess its a preference thing but I can type fast as hell in landscape with a normal kb so long as it can keep up. I found with swype it takes much more finger movement to type each word and you have to look at what you are doing more, not to mention smearing crap all over the screen...
Im still searching for a good alternative to dells stock kb, tried everything in the market with mixed results, but I think I'll just wait till the froyo update and try the ported htc multitouch kb.
@Cypher84
If you mess around with the settings for Swype you can change how long the trace shows for and the same for word prediction i have reduced the time for both which i have found has made the world of difference. Also now Swype has learnt most of my most commonly typed words I'm finding it incredibly fast and accurate and also it's quite forgiving if your not totally accurate. Also for the suggested word to be put in you just start the next word so now after just a short while using Swype it defiantly is my by far preferred method of text input. But like anything just because it's best for me doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else.

I had the same problem but you just need to do this
After you have installed and enabled swype
Open a text input box (what I do is open up the browser, go to google and then hold my finger down in the google search box)
Hold your finger down in this box until a menu appears "Input method"
select Input Method and then it should give you an option of Swype or Android Keyboard, select swype and now it will use that as default
Hope this helps

[Q] GoodReader alike app for Android?

I don't know if you have tried GoodReader on iPhone, a PDF viewer with outstanding features like zooming & horizontally locking the document (virtual cropping) & great stuff like this!
I have tried to find something similar for Android but I haven't found even a decent PDF Reader, let alone having special features!
Do you know any good apps?
Actually the adobe PDF reader for android isn't that bad ... If your in portrait mode it displays the full page and in landscape mode it fits the width
Sent from my SGH-959 *EXPLOSION*
I know, it's not bad but it' not as good as apps on iPhone, I just want to know if there's a better solution!
Any new apps in Market recently?
I hope that Goodreader will come to android one day. Its outstanding app that I used much on iphone and ipad and I miss it the most.
All pdf readers are not even close to goodreader...
Got the ezPDF Reader, it does nearly everything GoodReader does! Check it out!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867778
I have also found the Aldiko reader to be a good alternative to GoodReader... Although I would like GoodReader to come out with an Android version....
How in earth aldiko reader is an alternative to goodreader? Please do not mislead people. The difference between two apps in terms of pdf handling is like day&night
Repligo reader and ezpdf are the closest ones to goodreader. But still quality difference is striking
I love good reader for making folders and storing apps. getting ready for an samsung note, any advice on folders for pdf files?

About GoodReader for Android
Hi there,
Just want to add one of the key features of GoodReader is the ability to keep in sync specific folders from DropBox / SugarSync / Google Drive... Its not just for PDF, you can open any type of Docs, Photos and even Videos... I mean its great...
I recently migrated from my iPhone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy SIII, with the disappointing of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 I finally decided to give Android a test drive and its really great all the liberty you have to do stuff in the phone... The only thing I missed in iPhone is the iPod and GoodReader....
We should create a Featured Request with some significant amount of people to ask GoodReader developers to make this app for Android. I already tried with no luck, the answer was plain and simple: "We will note be developing GoodReader for Android cause its especifically designed for iOS"... An Apple Blind Fan?

The thing is that iOS doesn't have file managers like in android. That's why GoodReader is so good on iOS because is able to behave like a file manager under the limitations of iOS.
In Android we have a lot of file managers that do exactly what you want like sync to another services. You only have to search for file managers. I recommend Solid Explorer Beta 2 which I think is the best file manager at the moment.
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but is there really still no android app that can match Goodreader in terms of speed, smoothness and the ability to handle extremely large PDF files?
I've tried all the ones recommended here on my galaxy s3 and nexus 10, but they're nothing compared to Goodreader on my iPad 2.
Any apps on the android market that can compare to GoodReader? There has to be something close
what a shame
very sad... just gave up my ipad for a nexus 7.. before swapping I asked in different places for apps that behaved like GoodReader... lots of recommendations, not that I finally changed I noticed it was all bull.... there is absolutely NOTHING that handles documents like GoodReader on android... NOT EVEN CLOSE....
VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED...

Nook Reader App

I'll admit I'm a complete noob to android or any smart phone....so be gentle!
I bought a NT for my daughter's Christmas present and have rooted it with Indirect's method following Albert's videos. Excellent stuff and everything went as planned. I loaded Go Launcher and debloated #1 option.
The device will be used primarily for an ereader so the first 2 apps I downloaded were Kindle and Nook for Android. The Kindle fires up just fine, but when I tap the Nook nothing happens. The stock Nook ereader is accessible if you are in another application and hit the 'n' and go to library, but I'd like to have it on the main page in a folder with Kindle. Is there any way to get a Nook reader app on the main page?
I have purchased Root Explorer so if I need to move / modify something I should be ok.
Not sure what the debloater removes, but is the Library icon still available in Go Launcher's app drawer? If so, just long press on it until you see the option at the bottom "Drag to Screen" (or something similar), drag it there and Go Launcher will zoom out to show all of your active screens. Drag the icon to one of them and it will stay there.
Pressing that should get you to the same place as the Library option on the nook menu that comes up when you press the 'n'
Using AnyCut, I believe the stock Reader app is actually Nook Viewer. However- it doesn't have any menus or UI elements of its own. I believe this is why when you're in it, there's no available menu/file functions. By itself, it's just a white screen.
So basically, I think Library is the only practical way to link directly to the stock reader. There's also a 'Books' app that can be added as an Application shortcut, but it's a pretty limited preview of the stock Library.
Alternatively, you could use a third party book reader like Moon Reader, Aldiko (has a very nice bookshelf/library feature of its own) or Mantano Reader Free (ditto).

After flashing my Nook Tablet to CM10, I've come to realise how superior the Stock Reader and Library was to any 3rd party app (I've tried several, and nothing works as elegantly with epub, pdf and cbz as the stock Library & Reader did. It's considerably better than even the Kindle (App and device.) The Kobo App is decent, but way too invasive with its ads and recommendations. Has anyone tried porting the stock library & reader app to CM10? I tried installing the Library & Reader APK from the 1.4.3 update, but it doesn't install.

I've been happy with Comic Rack for CBR and CBZs. Lightning fast and hella stable.

Yep, I didn't like how moon+ handled my files, and didn't like the interface.
Most readers get close, but want to "import" your files , some just create a database (which is fine) some like to move or copy your epubs into their own directory (e.g. Kobo). I want to copy my epubs to a standard directory, and for the reader's "Library" or browser to see the files there. I also want smooth page transitions.

Moon+ doesn't actually move any files anywhere during the import process if that's what you think. You can specify which folder to look at for all your storage. That's exactly what I do.

And a new update just added support for CBR and CBZs with smooth-scrolling thumbnails. Maybe you should give it another go? (And I found that fiddling with the MANY tweaking options for page transitions gave me exactly the level of smoothness, speed, etc., that I was looking for. After that, I saved new default day and night custom themes. I can't say enough good things about Moon+.)
My favorite ereader is still fbreader the minimalist interface is superior to many of the fancy looking ones plus it opens by default it the last read book which is important if you only have a few minutes to read.

Does Moon+ handled DRM'ed ePubs? My library uses Adobe Digital Editions for lending ePub files, and I've only been able to open them in Aldiko, though otherwise I like the Moon+ interface better. I don't want to plonk down $5 for Moon+ when the free version of Aldiko handles my specific need...

Moon+ free version is what I use. As for DRM content, I really dont know as I have NEVER experienced a rejection with anything other than the incorrect format prior to them adding MOBI and CBR CBZ support.

When I try to open a DRM'ed file in Moon+ free, all I get is an error message with a link to search for how to bypass ADE's DRM. That puts a bad taste in my mouth -- effectively they're saying "We don't want to add support for reading DRM files. Here's how to break the DRM, instead."
Aldiko give an error message if you haven't registered you SD card with your ADE credentials. If you have, opening an ADE file is totally transparent.
I guess that decides it for me, then. I'll stick with Aldiko, instead.

This is my #1 fear in upgrading from rooted stock w/ go launcher to CM10. No matter what happens, my tablet is still primarily a book reader... and I happen to love the stock reader.
Is there a specific reason as to 1. Why it won't install and 2. Why the nook app for android isn't the same?

[Q] Samsung's Ebook & File Manager on ICS ROMs?

Hi guys,
do you know how to port Samsung's Ebook & File Manager on an ICS Rom?
I've tried to install the apks but they force close!
Thanks!
These apps require the touchwiz framework. They won't work on ICS, at least not until Samsung releases their 4.0 touchwizzed ROM (and, really, who's going to use that over CM9?) I like the ebook app also, but there's lots of other good readers. Try ezPDF reader or the Kobo app. As to the "my files" app; that one is garbage anyways (the interface was nice, but who cares: it's a file explorer). Get ES file explorer. Much more there, especially if you want to stream from your network.
