HTCDEV is your only option for root. Gives you S-On but you are still very capable of flashing most if not all of the roms available. The catch is the kernels need to be flashed through fastboot but I've seen other methods to flash all at once. Read evo 3d dev section for more info.

i've done the htv dev method with hboot 1.5. it is very simple step by step. then follow the guide in here. very easy once you take the plunge. did it straight through the first time no problems. the only thing is that you will still have s-on and will have to do a slightly different method to flash roms and kernals. but it's very easy. best of luck.

I agree. Pretty simple & straight forward. Did mine last night & I only had this phone for 3hrs. lol

The app flash image GUI is a must for us 1.5ers...

Just follow the step by step instructions, its not bad

You might want to change your thread title. At first I thought there was a new hboot v1.60.

No. Don't be scared. I'm an idiot and I was able to do it. It's easy.

The problem is you still can't do some things, like change the radio.

hey take a look at this
here this can help you to flash any rom up there i just install cyanogen on my evo 3d 4 day ago very easy just read the step but step read the whole content then go to the videos good luck..
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-h...-rooted-hboot-1-50-for-htc-evo-3d-htc-unlock/

Follow the HTCDEV and then the tutorial that I link in this post.. and you should be able to flash anything.. after if you do it right.

I followed this same method and it was easy as pie. Just don't forget once you have your recovery in place to make a nand backup, can't be stressed enough.

finally took the plunge since I was getting a few force closes when receiving calls (on unrooted stock). Must say, very easy when you have all the files in place and flashing is not hard at all. Flash image GUI helps a lot with flashing any kernel too.

[Q] Worth rooting EVO 3D right now?

So I just got the EVO 3D and am running HBOOT 1.5 and the most recent update I believe. Nothing I could do about that, it was preloaded on there.
I'm wondering if it is even worth it for me to root my phone at this point. I've seen a few people hboot 1.5 **** up their phones and i'd rather not do that. I'm no stranger to custom roms at all (I installed countless ones on my Hero) so it's not that I'm not familiar. Were the people who messed up their phones just doing stuff they shouldn't have/being stupid in general?

More than likely, yes. Most users who follow the guides don't seem to have issues.
The HTC unlock method changes the dynamics a bit from previous common and accepted methods. Many "new" users become between old and current guides.
As far as I've seen, there are only three limitations to hboot 1.5, compared with early "compromised" versions using the AlphaRevX revolutionary method.
1) Kernel is not able to be flashed from recovery mode. Work arounds include: flashing from normal Android mode, my app is great for that, Flash Image GUI. Loading the custom recovery from fastboot. Flashing the kernel from fastboot. Using the "dumlock" method with TWRP.
2) Unable to selectively flash radio images
3) Unable to selectively flash intial splash screens
If I'm missing anything, I'm sure somebody else can post up.
None of those seem like deal breakers to me. Thanks for the fast replies.
It's kind of a ***** just because you have to do a few extra steps but if you know what your doing you won't screw it up.
Yarr. I think I'm going to keep stock for probably just a bit longer. Maybe 1.5 S-Off wont be a problem then. Not bored of it yet, and coming from HTC Hero the thing is a dream.
Root is the way to go Get rid of bloat Also adb isn't hard I always fastboot boot recovery.img and wipe flash no issues
Should I start a new thread on this? I tried to root my HBoot1.5 with 2.17.651.5. When I have went through the HTC unlock process it stays locked. I tried to install the 2.08 version through the original RUU, but it keeps failing. Not sure where I should go from there.

I used the 2.17 from http://www.filefactory.com/f/4ef0ef536face67a/ and mine unlocked. I ran the ruu while in hboot so it didnt check my current version. When i tried the same ruu from within android it failed every time.
What did it say when you flashed the unlock token? Did you get the message on the phone screen asking if you want to unlock?

first you unlock your bootloader using HTC's method for , next youll want to flash the recovery to a new verson and then boot into it and load your phone as a usb device and then copy over the super user zip and run it...;reboot then youre rootedafter that you look up Unknownforce's method to dpwngrade and obtain s-off or you can do the new "wire trick"

I have not tried that method but i found this method to work very well..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563342
Let me be totally honest the easiest way to hboot s off is to perform the wiretrick it is the easiest fastest way to do it.... its all about the wire timing and having a root on your phone with a pc with the program and adb and fastboot drivers
you can obtain the adb and fastboot drivers by searching rootevo3dnew.zip via google and dll that once done go into the folder or zip file and obtain A file Called HTC Driver.exe click it and install after that use jeuponut bears wiretrick
For me, its easier to use boot cd or boot flashdisk...
I also a new user of shooter, my phone just arrived 36 hours ago but I'm success downgrade to 1.4 hboot, S-off,rooted,custom recovery, and custom ROM..

If you follow the directions in the stickies in the development forum, you will be fine. I bricked mine following their directions and had no issues. Either way (using the wire trick or bricking), you will bee so glad you are s-off.

The brick is only a temp-brick. Think of it more as putting it into a "recovery mode" in which you're recovering to a lower hboot. It's simple enough to do once you get it into that mode. Plus you don't have to use HTC Unlock and hand over your warranty to HTC.

then to downgrade and s-off:

as iam new to this when i tried it... i am really nervous of bricking my phone... but eventually... i succeeded after several tries of doing the same thing over and over again..... and its pretty exiting....you try it...you'll be fine
Dont use htcdev for these reasons:
1.Warranty void aka re-locked
2. Its a lot of mess
3.You need to flash the boot.img once you flash a new rom again.

New to the Rezound gimme the low-down on s-off and flashing roms

With htc thunderbolts out of stock, verizon has sent me rezound as a replacement! Before it comes I would just like to be in the know on how flashing roms on the rezound goes. I am not new to rooting (since htc hero) but i have never ventured far from what's safe. I've already looked around the forums and found potential roms as well as and found tools for rooting/unlocking the bootloader. I also noticed that getting s-off is way to difficult and time consuming for me at the moment.
So I just have a few questions. Answer one or all anything helps:
1. can i root and unlock the bootloader easily? (which ways do you recommend?)
2. with s-on can i still flash any rom of my choice, and if so how do i make sure i can do it safely?
3. with s-on do i still have a permanent root?
If you would like to give me any additional information about how flashing roms, rooting, etc works on the rezound it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tommy

All the answers to your question are in the threads. Google and the search feature are your best friends. :cyclops:
1.visit the htc dev website to unlock bootloader its pretty simple do a search for hasoon2000's all in one toolkit it's noob friendly.
1.5 flash amon ra recovery
2. S-on is fine but the kernel won't auto install it will place a ph98img.zip on your sd that will automatically flash when you boot back to bootloader
3. Permanent root is never a bad thing when I comes to flashing custom roms

S-off is optional, only needed if you plan on flashing different roms frequently it makes some process easier/convenient.
Seeing as how you're concerned about obtaining permanent root and flashing ROMs, S-OFF is a must. Like others have said, the process is not as intimidating as it seems. It just takes a lot of patience. I failed many times before finally getting it right and nothing happened to my phone. Good luck.

You can do it at any time, and just make sure to drag the contents of your sd onto your desktop before you do it, I've read about people losing all the stuff on it (didnt happen to me personally) otherwise, it doesn't wipe anything

Best way to get current radios on s-on rooted rezound

OK, so I bought the Rezound used and already rooted, I have just flashed viper 1.0.3 but my radios dont match up with the latest ones and I'm not sure if that might help battery life. The phone has AmonRu, sorry if this is covered somewhere... I searched and didnt come up with anything
also current baseband version is 1.22.10.0310r, 1.22.10.0308r

It's just different from other androids (D1, D2) and even the other HTC's I've had (Incredible and Thunderbolt). So, I'd need to flash the latest RUU to get the radios, but can i do that with the amon recovery ? And if so, does the latest RUU break root? Like I said the guy I bought it from rooted it, he said he used htc dev tool to root it.

You should do a little research before you attempt anything. Basically, you'll need to relock the boot loader using htcdev tool which is simple to do if you follow directions. Then you'll download the latest RUU and place it on the root of your SD card and then boot into the boot loader by powering the phone down and holding vol down and power. Then it will prompt for the update-choose yes. Once update is done you'll be completely stock and you'll need to unlock again with htcdev and install a custom recovery again. After that you can root again and flash ROMs. Sounds complicated, but if you plan to tinker with this phone these are MUST LEARN procedures.

Why wouldn't you just run the S-Off and not have to worry about things like this? I just find it amazing that people will go through the headache of unlocking their bootloader but not do the S-Off routine.

It's still fairly easy. Once I got the right kind of wire (speaker wire instead of a paperclip), it literally took just a few minutes to complete it. Got the timing right on the first try with the right wire.
And like Ashton said, you can return to S-On.
Yeah, s-off is truly easy. I know it seems intimidating and complicated, but 95% of the process is automated scripts. Once again, if you follow directions and take your time, its easy. I was surprised at how easy it was once I've completed it. Now I've done the process 5+ times and it takes less than 3 minutes from start to finish.

Make your the RUU is a zip and name it PH98IMG. S-OFF seems complicated, but it's not all you have to do is make sure you are rooted and have dev unlocked your phone run ControlBear and do the wire trick when told to. If you fail just leave the phone alone and close/open ControlBear again and keep trying.

I will say it was a giant pain in the ass for me. I followed the timing and was pretty careful about it but it just didn't work. I was using a paperclip (uninsulated) so maybe that's why, but I eventually just spammed the other terminal and one of those times it took. haha

I got it to almost work only once with a paperclip. It failed at the end though (gave still sober message). After about 20-30 minutes of fiddling with it... I got sick of it. Took off one of the wires from my home theatre (18 guage probably, and ~25 ft lol), and used that. Worked the first try lol.. So yeah, been recommending actual wire rather than paperclips if possible.

[Q] Need Help With S-Off!!!

Hello! So I rooted my htc evo 3d a few days ago and I have been trying to flash roms using 4 ext recovery. But I realized that I had hboot 1.58 and I needed to downgrade It in order to get the roms I want....
And in order to do THAT, I had to get S-OFF. So ive looked for multiple solutions and I've found a post by remanifiest, the s-off, root and fix everything post (site wont let me post links yet, sorry) and I am on using the preliminary steps, unrooting it to get s-off. According to the post, I need to download the RUU which is the last of the preliminary steps. Mind you, Im not on the official step one yet, Im just trying to unroot it to get s-off. My bootloader does says relocked and everything, I'm so close. I downloaded the files he provided and the RUU is out of date. I need 2.95 but all I could find were ones way older than mine. I very unsure of what to do next. Could someone please point me in the right direction?? Thank the heavens my Htc isn't bricked but I really want to be able to flash the roms that I want, I don't want this whole process to be a waste. Im relatively new to this also but Ive learned a lot. Please help??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
as your are on 2.95 you need to read the instructions very carefully. follow the whole guide and you should be fine
Sprint users: If the March OTA ((2.95.651.5) is installed and the phone is unrooted proceed directly to Step2. If the March OTA is installed and it's rooted see this post for instructions on how to prepare for flashing the RUU.

This is actually one of the post i had read. I downloaded the file (i am on virgin mobile btw) for VM users and it was out of date so i discontinued with the process..... in search for the latest RUU so i could get S-Off
Again back where i started
VM users: If the November VM OTA update (1.14.652.0) was installed and the phone is rooted with a custom recovery and ROM, please see this post for instructions on how to prepare the phone to run the RUU.exe. If both the November and March OTA (2.95.652.5) were installed there is no way to flash the RUU so proceed to Step2, or if already rooted flash a stock rooted ROM from this post then go directly to Step3.

Im just asking for help
unlock bootloader (you might need a new unlock token from htcdev.com) then flash that stock rom in recovery. then proceed with the wire trick. you'll need ubuntu or ubuntu livecd for that.
